Ordinary And Coherent Bremsstrahlung At Linac-Ring Ep Colliders, V.G. Serbo, D.V. Serebryakova
Turkish Journal of Physics
The ordinary bremsstrahlung $ep \rightarrow ep\gamma$ can be used at the linac-ring $ep$ colliders for luminosity measurement. It is known that at high energies this process has a large correction due to beam-size effect. We have calculated this effect for $ep$ colliders of the linac-ring type. For the LHC+CLIC collider the correction exceeds 10\% for $E_{\gamma} < 0.95\;E_e$. As a rule, the bremsstrahlung of protons in the $ep$ scattering is not considered due to its small cross section. However, if the photon energy $E_{\gamma}$ becomes small enough, the number of produced photons become large because in this case the radiation is determined by the interaction of a proton with the collective electromagnetic field of the electron bunch. It is coherent bremsstrahlung (CBS). We present the main characteristics of CBS calculated for linac-ring $ep$ colliders. At the LHC+CLIC collider it should be about $1700 \; dE_\gamma /E_\gamma$ photons for a single collision of bunches at $E_\gamma \stackrel{

A Possibility To Control The Polarization Of High-Energy Photons By Means Of A Laser Beam, G.L. Kotkin, V.G. Serbo
Turkish Journal of Physics
The elastic light-light scattering below the threshold of the $e^+e^-$ pair production leads to a variation in polarization of hard $\gamma$-quanta traversing without loss a region where the laser light is focused. This effect can be used to control the $\gamma$-quantum polarization. Equations are obtained which determine the variation of Stokes parameters of $\gamma$-quanta in this case, and their solutions are given. It is pointed out that this effect can be observed in the experiment E-144 at SLAC. It should be taken into account and, perhaps, it can be used in experiments at future $\gamma \gamma$ colliders.

Rayleigh lidar observations of mesosphere temperature profiles obtained from 40 to ∼100 km from Logan, Utah (41.7, 111.8 W, altitude, 1.9 km) over 10 nights in late February, 1995, revealed an interesting development between 60 to 75 km of a winter mesosphere inversion layer with an amplitude of ∼20–30 K and a downward phase progression of ∼1 km/hr. The data also showed two altitude regions exhibiting significant cooling of 10–30 K in extent. These were located below and above the peak of the inversion layer, respectively, at altitudes of ∼50–55 km and ∼70–80 km. When these results were compared with …
New Conformal Gauging And The Electromagnetic Theory Of Weyl, James Thomas Wheeler
New Conformal Gauging And The Electromagnetic Theory Of Weyl, James Thomas Wheeler
All Physics Faculty Publications
A new eight-dimensional conformal gauging solves the auxiliary field problem and eliminates unphysical size change from Weyl’s electromagnetic theory. We derive the Maurer–Cartan structure equations and find the zero curvature solutions for the conformal connection. By showing that every one-particle Hamiltonian generates the structure equations we establish a correspondence between phase space and the eight-dimensional base space, and between the action and the integral of the Weyl vector. Applying the correspondence to generic flat solutions yields the Lorentz force law, the form and gauge dependence of the electromagnetic vector potential and minimal coupling. The dynamics found for these flat solutions …

Some imaging systems employ detector arrays that are not sufficiently dense to meet the Nyquist criterion during image acquisition. This is particularly true for many staring infrared imagers. Thus, the full resolution afforded by the optics is not being realized in such a system. This paper presents a technique for estimating a high-resolution image, with reduced aliasing, from a sequence of undersampled rotated and translationally shifted frames. Such an image sequence can be obtained if an imager is mounted on a moving platform, such as an aircraft. Several approaches to this type of problem have been proposed in the literature. …

The results of two ionospheric simulations are compared with each other and with ionospheric observations of the southern hemisphere for the magnetic cloud passage event of January 14, 1988. For most of the event one simulation agrees with observations, while the other does not. Electric fields and electron precipitation patterns generated by a magnetospheric MHD model are used as inputs to a physical model of the ionosphere in the successful simulation, while empirical electric fields and electron precipitation are used as the inputs for the second simulation. In spite of ionospheric summer conditions a large and deep polar hole is …
Superfluorescence From Optically Trapped Calcium Atoms, Xianming Han
Superfluorescence From Optically Trapped Calcium Atoms, Xianming Han
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
We have studied superfluorescence (SF) under highly unfavorable conditions of rapid collisional and radiative distribution in a Doppler-broadened medium. Nanosecond SF pulses at 5.5 μm were generated on the Ca 4s4p1P1–3d4s1D2 transition from a column of calcium vapor buffered with Ar by optically pumping the 4s21S0–4s4p1P1 transition. The Rabi frequency associated with the intense pump pulse prevents the occurrence of SF while the pump laser is on. As a result, the predicted scaling laws that describe the properties of SF in a transversely excited system, such as peak heights, pulse widths, and delay times, are shown to apply in our …

Effects Of The Evolution Of Spacecraft Surfaces On Secondary Electron Emission Andspacecraft Charging, R. E. Davies, John R. Dennison
All Physics Faculty Publications
Spacecraft charging due to the natural plasma environment found in all orbits is known to produce many of the observed spacecraft anomalies and failures. A primary factor in adverse spacecraft charging is the secondary electron emission of differing materials on the spacecraft. Precipitating electrons and ions from the plasma to spacecraft surfaces can result in varying amounts of charge being released, depending on the secondary electron yield of the materials; this can lead to arcing between surfaces. NASA's Space and Environments Effects (SEE) program has recognized the need to improve their current materials database for modeling spacecraft charging and have …

Five physical models of the ionosphere were compared with each other and with data obtained at the Millstone Hill Observatory. Two of the models were self-consistent ionosphere-thermosphere models, while for the other ionospheric models the thermospheric parameters were provided by empirical inputs. The comparisons were restricted to midlatitudes and low geomagnetic activity, but four geophysical cases were considered that covered both the summer and winter solstices at solar maximum and minimum. The original motivation of the study was to determine why several physical models consistently underestimated the F region peak electron density, by up to a factor of 2, in …

Dynamical Effects Of Ionospheric Conductivity On The Formation Of Polar Cap Arcs, L. Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, D. J. Crain
All Physics Faculty Publications
By using a magnetosphere-ionosphere (M-I) coupling model of polar cap arcs [Zhu et al., 1993], a systematic model study of the effects of ionospheric background conductivity on the formation of polar cap arcs has been conducted. The variations of the ionospheric background conductivity in the model study cover typical ionospheric conditions, including solar minimum, solar maximum, winter, and summer. The simulation results clearly indicate that the ionospheric background conductivity can dynamically affect the mesoscale features of polar cap arcs through a nonlinear M-I coupling process associated with the arcs.

Temporal and spatial spectral analysis techniques were applied to lidar data collected over a period of 18 months above the Rocky Mountain region at an altitude range from 45 to 70 km by a Rayleigh lidar system located in Logan, Utah (41.7°N, 111.8°W). Examination of the averaged temporal frequency F(ω) and vertical wavenumber F(m) spectra showed spectral slope values of −1.49 ± 0.03 and −2.3 ± 0.1, respectively. The observed slope for the overall averaged F(m) spectrum is considerably more positive than the value of −3 predicted by the linear instability theory but close to the …
Factorization And Effective Action For High-Energy Scattering In Qcd, Ian Balitsky
Factorization And Effective Action For High-Energy Scattering In Qcd, Ian Balitsky
Physics Faculty Publications
The author demonstrates that the amplitude of the high-energy scattering can be factorized in a convolution of the contributions due to fast and slow fields. The fast and slow fields interact by means of Wilson-line operators -- infinite gauge factors ordered along the straight line. The resulting factorization formula gives a starting point for a new approach to the effective action for high-energy scattering.
Searching For Periodic Sources With Ligo, Patrick R. Brady, Teviet Creighton, Curt Cutler, Bernard F. Schutz
Searching For Periodic Sources With Ligo, Patrick R. Brady, Teviet Creighton, Curt Cutler, Bernard F. Schutz
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
We investigate the computational requirements for all-sky, all-frequency searches for gravitational waves from spinning neutron stars, using archived data from interferometric gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO. These sources are expected to be weak, so the optimal strategy involves coherent accumulaton of signal-to-noise using Fourier transforms of long stretches of data (months to years). Earth-motion-induced Doppler shifts, and intrinsic pulsar spindown, will reduce the narrow-band signal-to-noise by spreading power across many frequency bins; therefore, it is necessary to correct for these effects before performing the Fourier transform. The corrections can be implemented by a parametrized model, in which one does …

Transfer Of Photometric Quantities At Arbitrary Distribution Temperatures, İzmir Mamedbeyli̇, Zafer Ürey, A. Kamuran Türkoğlu
Turkish Journal of Physics
Characteristics of a photometric setup used for the measurement of photometric quantities at the National Institute of Metrology (UME) in Turkey are reported. A high accuracy method is developed to adjust the filaments of incandescent lamps with respect to the optical axis. The method also provides the basis for low uncertainty distance measurements between lamp filaments and photometers. Transfer of photometric quantities at arbitrary distribution temperatures is examined both theoretically and experimentally, and the results are compared to the calibration values of the Bureau International Des Poids Et Measures (BIPM), Paris, France.

Low-Temperature Phase Transition In Tl In Se_{2} Crystals, Oktay Zeynelabidin O Alekperov, Mazahir Amirjan Oglu Aljanov, Elmira M. Ali Gizi Keri̇mova
Turkish Journal of Physics
Heat capacity, lattice parameter, spectral and temperature dependences of photoconductivity of chained crystal Tl In Se_{2} have been investigated in this work. For the first time, it has been found that the phase transtion takes plase at temperatures 135 and 184 K in this crystal. The changes of heat capacity, photoconductivity and lattice parameter of Tl In Se_{2} in the region of phase transition is supposed to be connected with the presence of an incommensurate phase in this crystal.

Coulomb Breakup Of Nucleus ^6 Li On Ion ^{208}Pb, B. F. Irgaziev, H. T. Ergashbaev
Turkish Journal of Physics
In the framework of the three-body approach the A(a,bc)A Coulomb breakup has been investigated. The three-body Coulomb dynamic is taken into account to derive the expression for the reaction matrix element. The mechanism of the breakup includes the direct process and the excitation of resonance state of the particle a. The calculation of the triple differential cross section of the ^{208}Pb(^6Li, \alpha d)^{208}Pb Coulomb dissociation have been performed in the energy region E_{\alpha d} < 1MeV. Calculations for the Coulomb dissociation ^{208}Pb(^6Li, \alpha d)^{208}Pb, including consideration of the triple cross section going through the first resonance of ^6Li have been performed. The results of the calculations are compared with experimental data.
Formation Of Hot Zone By The Application Of An Electric Field To Superconducting Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2ca_3cu_4o_X (2234) Rod, E. Yanmaz
Turkish Journal of Physics
The formation of hot zone by electric field on superconducting Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BSCCO) rods is described. Bulk samples with a nominal composition of Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2Ca_3Cu_4O_x (2234) were prepared as rods by a melt casting process. An electrical field was applied to the BSCCO rods and this current caused the resistance of the rod to fall and after a few minutes the initial voltage fell while the current was increased to 2.5A. Under certain conditions, a well-defined hot zone formed at the positive electrode, travelled along the rod and eventually disappeared on reaching the negative electrode. A small increase in the applied current …

Physisorbed Co On Ionic Crystals: An Extended Beg Spin-Lattice Model Of Adsorbed Dipolar Molecules, T. E. Burns, Jr Dennison
Journal Articles
The 2D dielectric phases and phase transitions of adsorbed dipolar molecules are studied using a dilute spin-one Ising model. The spin-one formulation assigns a spin Si = ±1 to a (up/down) dipole occupying a lattice site i adsorbed perpendicular to the substrate surface and Si = 0 to unoccupied sites. We relate the mean field expression for the spin-model interaction energy to a more detailed microscopic model involving dipolar, quadrupolar and dispersive interactions beyond nearest neighbor. Analytic solutions in the mean field approximation are discussed for dipole-orientation order-disorder transitions and ferroelectric-to-antiferroelectric transitions as a function of temperature and …

Cell Size Dependence Of Transport Coefficients In Stochastic Particle Algorithms, Alejandro Garcia, F. Alexander, B. Alder

Using the Green–Kubo theory, the dependence of the viscosity and thermal conductivity on cell size is obtained explicitly for stochastic particle methods such as direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and its generalization, the consistent Boltzmann algorithm (CBA). These analytical results confirm empirical observations that significant errors occur when the cell dimensions are larger than a mean free path.

Physical Dependence Of The Sensitivity And Room-Temperature Stability Of Auxge1-X Thin Film Resistive Thermometers On Annealing Conditions, Nathanael A. Fortune, Michael J. Graf, Keizo Murata
Physics: Faculty Publications
The reported nearly constant temperature sensitivity of appropriately annealed polycrystalline AuxGe1-x thin films at cryogenic temperatures would appear to make them promising materials for low mass, rapid thermal response resistive thermometers, but their adoption has been limited by difficulties in fabrication and uncertainties in annealing. In this work, we present a method of fabrication and annealing which allows control of the two most important parameters for these films: the room-temperature resistivity ρRT and the temperature sensitivity η(T), where η ≡ -d In R/d In T. We find that the dependence of ρRT on total anneal duration t for x≈0.18 is …

Surface Studies Of Metals After Interaction With Hydrogen Isotopes, David Samuel Silver
Surface Studies Of Metals After Interaction With Hydrogen Isotopes, David Samuel Silver
Dissertations and Theses
The objective of this research is to characterize surfaces of metals after interaction with hydrogen isotopes. Iron, which does not readily bond with hydrogen, and palladium, which strongly bonds with hydrogen, were studied. Observations of surfaces are used to determine the nature of their metamorphosis due to such exposures. An experimental study of pure iron foil (99.99%) exposed to a hot, dense hydrogen and argon gas mixture in a ballistic compressor yielded evidence for new structural and compositional changes of the metal due to the exposure. Atomic force microscope (AFM) studies demonstrated surfaces to be highly uneven, where height variations …
The Green Dyadic Formulation For Radiation Problems With Arbitrary Sources Embedded In Stratified Multi-Layer Structures : Application To Molecular Fluorescence Problems, Robert Lyle Hartman
The Green Dyadic Formulation For Radiation Problems With Arbitrary Sources Embedded In Stratified Multi-Layer Structures : Application To Molecular Fluorescence Problems, Robert Lyle Hartman
Dissertations and Theses
The Green Dyadic method for computing fields due to current sources between parallel interfaces of dielectric materials is studied. Computer implementation of the method as presented in a well-known article leads to the conclusion that significant errors are present. Two dissimilar methods of solution lead to corrected formulations which are shown to be equivalent. The same correction is found in the research literature. For confirmation, computations are performed in examples involving an emitting dipole by both the Green dyadic method and Sommerfeld' s Hertz vector method. Finally, the computational examples are used to compute fluorescence decay rates for emitting dipoles …

Using 40 ns laser pulses, we probe the real-time dynamics of ultracold ionizing collisions in metastable xenon. We time resolve both shielding and enhancement effects, and observe the production of Xe2^+ molecular ions through associative ionization. We estimate the rate of molecule formation in excited-state collisions, and directly measure the role of both flux enhancement and excited state survival in the collisional enhancement process. Conceptually simple theoretical models are used to predict the dynamics of the collisional shielding.
