The effects of evolving surface contamination on spacecraft charging have been investigated through (i) ground-based measurements of the change in electron emission properties of a conducting surface undergoing contamination and (ii) modeling of the charging of such surfaces using the NASCAP code. Specifically, we studied a Au surface as adsorbed species were removed and a very thin disordered carbon film was deposited as a result of exposure to an intense, normal incidence electron beam. As a result of this contamination, we found an ~50% decrease in secondary electron yield and an ~20% reduction in backscattered yield. The type and rates …

Model Study Of Ionospheric Dynamics During A Substorm, Lie Zhu, Robert W. Schunk, Jan Josef Sojka, Michael David
All Physics Faculty Publications
A global substorm electrodynamic model and a global ionospheric model were coupled in order to study ionospheric dynamics during substorms, with the focus on small-scale substorm electrodynamic and plasma structures. The simulation results show that in the expansion phase, structured precipitation and channeled field-aligned currents quickly develop in the substorm onset region. The Hall and Pedersen conductance ratio in the region increases significantly, and the magnetospheric field-aligned currents are mainly closed by highly structured Hall currents. Correspondingly, the plasma in the ionosphere also undergoes significant changes during a substorm and is highly structured in both the horizontal and vertical directions. …
Sensitivity Curves For Spaceborne Gravitational Wave Interferometers, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock, Ronald W. Hellings
Sensitivity Curves For Spaceborne Gravitational Wave Interferometers, Shane L. Larson, William A. Hiscock, Ronald W. Hellings
All Physics Faculty Publications
To determine whether particular sources of gravitational radiation will be detectable by a specific gravitational wave detector, it is necessary to know the sensitivity limits of the instrument. These instrumental sensitivities are often depicted (after averaging over source position and polarization) by graphing the minimal values of the gravitational wave amplitude detectable by the instrument versus the frequency of the gravitational wave. This paper describes in detail how to compute such a sensitivity curve given a set of specifications for a spaceborne laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory. Minor errors in the prior literature are corrected, and the first (mostly) analytic …
Optical Performance Of Grazing Incidence X-Ray / Euv Telescopes For Space Science Applications, Patrick Louis Thompson
Optical Performance Of Grazing Incidence X-Ray / Euv Telescopes For Space Science Applications, Patrick Louis Thompson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The science and technology of X-rays has only been part of human achievement for the past 100 years, while the study of image formation in general has endured for as long as 1000 years. The ability to conceive, design, and fabricate X-ray imagers, moreover, has existed for only the past 70 years, and X-ray astronomical telescopes have been in use for a mere 35 years. Considering that aplanatic, normal incidence telescope designs required more than 400 years to perfect, it is most interesting to note that the development of ‘aplanatic’ grazing incidence telescopes has taken only about 40 years. In …

Inception Of Snapover And Gas Induced Glow Discharges, J. T. Galofaro, B V. Vayner, D C. Ferguson, C D. Thomson, Jr Dennison, R E. Davies
Conference Proceedings
Ground based experiments of the snapover phenomenon were conducted in the large vertical simulation chamber at the Glenn Research Center (GRC) Plasma Interaction Facility (PIF). Two Penning sources provided both argon and xenon plasmas for the experiments. The sources were used to simulate a variety of ionospheric densities pertaining to a spacecraft in a Low Earth Orbital (LEO) environment1–4. Secondary electron emission is believed responsible for dielectric surface charging, and all subsequent snapover phenomena observed2,5. Voltage sweeps of conductor potentials versus collected current were recorded in order to examine the specific charging history of each sample. …

Evolution Of Secondary Electron Emission Characteristics Of Spacecraft Surfaces: Importance To Spacecraft Charging, R. E. Davies, Jr Dennison
Evolution Of Secondary Electron Emission Characteristics Of Spacecraft Surfaces: Importance To Spacecraft Charging, R. E. Davies, Jr Dennison

Secondary electron emission (SEE) plays a key role in spacecraft charging [Garrett, 1981; Frooninckx and Sojka, 1992] . As a result, spacecraft charging codes require knowledge of the SEE characteristics of various materials in order to predict vehicle potentials in various orbital environments [Katz, et. al., 1986]. Because SEE is a surface phenomenon, occurring in the first few atomic layers of a material, the SEE characteristics of a given surface are extremely sensitive to changes in surface condition—e.g., the addition or removal of surface contaminants, or changes in surface morphology. That spacecraft surfaces …

Wave Profile For Antiforce Class Ii Waves, Rory Roberts, Mostafa Hemmati
Wave Profile For Antiforce Class Ii Waves, Rory Roberts, Mostafa Hemmati
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Breakdown waves propagating in the opposite direction of the applied electric field force are referred to as antiforce waves. Breakdown waves moving into a pre-ionized medium are referred to as Class II waves. Using a one-dimensional, steady state, three-fluid, hydrodynamical model and considering the electrons as the main element in propagation of ionizing waves, we have derived the proper boundary conditions for antiforce waves moving into a preionized medium. Using the new boundary conditions and for several current values ahead of the wave, the set of electron fluid dynamical equations (equations of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy coupled with …

Molecular Interaction Between Nitric Oxide And Ryanodine Receptors Of Skeletal And Cardiac Sarcoplasmic Reticulum, Guy Salama, Elizaveta V. Menshikova, Jonathan J. Abramson
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
In striated muscle, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is the major storage compartment of intracellular Ca2+ that controls cytosolic free Ca2+ (Cai) and developed force by sequestering and releasing Ca2+ during each contraction. Ca2+ release from the SR occurs through high-conductance Ca2+ release channels or ryanodine receptors (RyR), which are regulated by various signaling processes. Over the last 15 years, there has been a growing consensus that critical sulfhydryl sites on RyRs can be oxidized and reduced, respectively, to open and close the release channels. The pharmacological actions of various classes of sulfhydryl reagents have demonstrated the existence of hyperreactive thiols …

Student Works (2000-2009)
Hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si :H) films were prepared from the discharge of pure silane and silane diluted in argon using a home-built hori zontal direct current(d.c.) plasma glow discharge system. The effects of argon dilution of silane on the optical properties, chemical bonding properties, hydrogen content and microstructure parameter of the films produced were studied and analyzed. Film thickness, refractive index, optical energy gap and the Urbach tail bandwidth were obtained from the optical transmission spectra of the films while the H content and the microstructure parameter were derived from the Fourier Transform infra-red(FTIR) spectra of the films. The FTIR …

Distribution Of Petrogenic Hydrocarbons In Water, Sediment And Cockles (Anadara Granosa) From Kuala Sungai Sepetang And Kuala Sungai Selangor, Mohd Hilmi Jaafar
Student Works (2000-2009)
In order to assess the level of oil pollution in the cockle culture areas along the Straits of Malacca, water, sediment and cockle samples were collected from the culture beds of Kuala Sepetang and Kuala Selangor, two of the largest cockle producing areas of Malaysia. The samples were analysed for petrogenic hydrocarbons by employing a spectrofluorometric technique which measures the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in oil. The content of aliphatic straight chain hydrocarbons were measured by using gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GCMS) which also allowed for the estimation of carbon preference indices and hence providing a means of estimating …

Development Of Multiple Channels Edf Lasers, Muhammad Zamzuri Abdul Kadir
Student Works (2000-2009)
This thesis presents the research work carried out on the development and analysis of single wavelength EDFL and multiple wavelength EDFL. Two types of single wavelength EDF ring laser were studied namely a fixed signal wavelength system and a tuneable signal wavelength system. However, emphasis was given to the first case. The analyses made, were based on the following parameters: pump and signal stability, pump power, reflectivity, EDF length and cavity loss. The influence of each cavity component such as isolator, polarisation controller, attenuator and tuneable filter were also investigated and reported here. Only one type of multiple wavelength EDFL …

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos, Zamri Zainal Abidin
Student Works (2000-2009)
Using the stopping power of matter. the effects of oscillations on the energy losses of solar neutrinos are investigated. The adiabatic and non-adiabatic survival probabilities of the neutrino oscillations, the mixing angles and Am² are the parameter.; in the calculations. The total energy losses for ⁸B neutrinos with maximum spectral energy of 14.06 MeV is 5 x 10⁻⁷ MeV and is slightly lower than the losses from the non-adiabatic conversion which is ~7 x 10⁻⁷ MeV. From the calculation, we found that the maximum total energy loss for solar neutrinos is of the order 10⁻⁶ MeV. We also include the …

Erbium-Ytterbium Codoped Fiber Amplifiers, Wai Yee Chan
Student Works (2000-2009)
The amplification characteristics of an Erbium/Ytterbium codoped fiber amplifier(EYDFA) pumped in both the 800nm and 980nm pump bands is reported. With -3m long Er-Yb fiber, the 813nm pumped-EYDFA shows small-signal gain exceeding 20dB over a 20nm bandwidth in the l.Sµm region where the peak gain of 38.4dB is achieved at 1535nm. A low noise figure of ~3.6d8 is also achieved at 1550nm. However, it is found that 980nm pumpedEYDF A suffers lower gain due to the effect of nonsaturable absorption by Yb³⁺ ions which causes high pump poWer loss, thus degrades the signal amplification in Er³⁺ system. Compared to the …

Student Works (2000-2009)
Copper(II) 4-aminobenzoate (CAB), prepared from copper(II) acetate monohydrate and 4-aminobenzoic acid, was a dark green powder. Fourier Transfonn lnfrared (FTIR) spectrum of CAB, recorded as KBr disc, indicated the presence of all bonds and functional groups expected of it, and the absence of hydrogen bonding. Its conductivity at room temperature was 4.2 x 10^-11 Scm^·1. The value increased as temperature decreased indicating metallic behaviour. Density of states at Fenni level, hopping distance, hopping energy and density of charge carriers calculated based on Mon's Variable Range Hopping model (VRH) are 2.65x 10^-22 (eV)^-1 cm^-3, 7.47 x 10^-8 cm, 0.02 eV and …
Investigations Of Transverse Arc Array Laser Action In Nitrogen Gas, Kee Siang Goh
Investigations Of Transverse Arc Array Laser Action In Nitrogen Gas, Kee Siang Goh
Student Works (2000-2009)
In almost all pulsed gas lasers, transverse electrical discharge is employed in the excitation of the atoms or molecules. These lasers normally employ discharge across a pair of common electrodes to provide large volume and uniform glow discharge. The scaling of output power in such lasers is obtained by increasing the volume of the discharge and also the pressure of the discharge gas. For this reason. the energy coupled into the discharge channel is kept low enough to avoid arcing. Under these circumstances, the electron temperature of such uniform glow discharge is not sufficient to produce excitation of VUV or …

Investigations On The Conductivity Of Organotin-Doped Polyethyleneoxide Polymer System, Lekshmi Sarojiniamma
Student Works (2000-2009)
Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) has been doped with selected organotin compounds. The organotin dopants used were triphenyltin thiocyanate (Ph3SnSCN) and tetramethylammonium dichlorotriphenylstannate [Ph3SnClr[Me4N)•. Tin incorporation in the polymers was established by several physical techniques. The infrared spectroscopic analysis of the Pb3SnSCN - doped electrolyte film showed bands at 2080-2050 cm.·' which are also given by pure Ph3SnSCN. Different concentrations of organotin doped electrolytes were prepared and conductivity studies on these were perfonned using impedance spectroscopy. From the measurements it was found that the best conductivity of 7.6xJ0.g Siem was obtained for the composition with PEO :dopant ratio of90:10 at room temperature. …

Over the past two decades, the dipole approximation has facilitated a basic understanding of the photoionization process in atoms and molecules. Recent experiments on the 1s inner shells of small molecules at relatively low photon energies (⩽ 1000 eV) show strong nondipole effects. They are significant and measurable at energies close to threshold, in conflict with a common assumption that the dipole approximation is valid for photon energies below 1 keV.

Nonlinear Self-Organization In Photorefractive Materials, Partha P. Banerjee, Nickolai Kukhtarev, John O. Dimmock
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This chapter discusses self-organization and its effects in optics. One of the most exciting and potentially useful areas of current research in optics involves the understanding and exploitation of self-organization in nonlinear optical systems. This self-organization may sometimes lead to the evolution of complex spatial patterns that can be regarded as the nonlinear eigenmodes of the system. Generation of these patterns is characteristically marked by the presence of intensity thresholds. In a nonlinear system with complicated temporal dynamics, it turns out that one cannot retain purity in spatial dimensionality. It is therefore equally important to investigate the dynamics of the …

Rotary Honing: A Variant Of The Taylor Paint-Scraper Problem, Christopher Hills, H. Moffatt
Articles
The three-dimensional Row in a corner of fixed angle α induced by the rotation in its plane of one of the boundaries is considered. A local similarity solution valid in a neighbourhood of the centre of rotation is obtained and the streamlines are shown to be closed curves. The effects of inertia are considered and are shown to be significant in a small neighbourhood of the plane of symmetry of the flow. A simple experiment confirms that the streamlines are indeed nearly closed; their projections on planes normal to the line of intersection of the boundaries are precisely the 'Taylor' …
