Magneto-Thermal Limitations In Superconducting Cavities At High Radio-Frequency Fields, I. Parajuli, G. Ciovati, A. Gurevich Jan 2024

Magneto-Thermal Limitations In Superconducting Cavities At High Radio-Frequency Fields, I. Parajuli, G. Ciovati, A. Gurevich

Physics Faculty Publications

The performance of superconducting radio-frequency Nb cavities at high radio-frequency (rf) fields in the absence of field emission can be limited by either a sharp decrease of the quality factor Q0(Bp) above peak surface magnetic fields Bp ∼100 mT or by a quench. We have measured Q0(Bp) at 2 K of several 1.3 GHz single-cell Nb cavities with different grain sizes, and with different ambient magnetic fields and cooldown rates below the critical temperature. Temperature mapping and a novel magnetic field mapping systems were used to find the location of “hot-spots” …

A polarimeter was constructed to measure the longitudinal polarization of a spin-polarized electron beam at 5 and 7 MeV. The polarimeter takes advantage of Compton scattering between circularly polarized bremsstrahlung photons produced by a longitudinally polarized electron beam striking a copper radiator and the spin-polarized electrons orbiting the iron atoms of an analyzing magnet. This so-called Compton transmission polarimeter is compact and relatively inexpensive compared to Mott-scattering polarimeters because no spin manipulator is required. This work presents the design of the radiator, analyzing magnet, photon detector assembly, and data acquisition system of the Compton transmission polarimeter as well as beam …

Evolution Of Efimov States, Sebastian M. Dawid, Md Habib E. Islam, Raúl A. Briceño, Andrew W. Jackura Jan 2024

Evolution Of Efimov States, Sebastian M. Dawid, Md Habib E. Islam, Raúl A. Briceño, Andrew W. Jackura

Physics Faculty Publications

The Efimov phenomenon manifests itself as an emergent discrete scaling symmetry in the quantum three-body problem. In the unitarity limit, it leads to an infinite tower of three-body bound states with energies forming a geometric sequence. In this work, we study the evolution of these so-called Efimov states using relativistic scattering theory. We identify them as poles of the three-particle 𝑆 matrix in the complex energy plane, and we study how they transform from virtual states through bound states to resonances when we change the interaction strength. We dial the scattering parameters toward the unitarity limit and observe the emergence …

Hubble Tension And Gravitational Self-Interaction, Corey Sargent, William Clark, Alexander Deur, Balša Terzić Jan 2024

Hubble Tension And Gravitational Self-Interaction, Corey Sargent, William Clark, Alexander Deur, Balša Terzić

Physics Faculty Publications

One of the most important problems vexing the ΛCDM cosmological model is the Hubble tension. It arises from the fact that measurements of the present value of the Hubble parameter performed with low-redshift quantities, e.g. the Type IA supernova, tend to yield larger values than measurements from quantities originating at high-redshift, e.g. fits of cosmic microwave background radiation. It is becoming likely that the discrepancy, currently standing at 5σ, is not due to systematic errors in the measurements. Here we explore whether the self-interaction of gravitational fields in General Relativity, which are traditionally neglected when studying the evolution …

Field, Frequency, And Temperature Dependencies Of The Surface Resistance Of Nitrogen Diffused Niobium Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavities, P. Dhakal, B. D. Khanal, A. Gurevich, G. Ciovati Jan 2024

Field, Frequency, And Temperature Dependencies Of The Surface Resistance Of Nitrogen Diffused Niobium Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavities, P. Dhakal, B. D. Khanal, A. Gurevich, G. Ciovati

Physics Faculty Publications

We investigate the rf performance of several single-cell superconducting radio-frequency cavities subjected to low temperature heat treatment in nitrogen environment. The cavities were treated at temperature 120–165 °C for an extended period of time (24–48 h) either in high vacuum or in a low partial pressure of ultrapure nitrogen. The improvement in 𝑄0 with a 𝑄 rise was observed when nitrogen gas was injected at ∼300 °C during the cavity cooldown from 800 °C and held at 165 °C, without any degradation in accelerating gradient over the baseline performance. The treatment was applied to several elliptical cavities with frequency ranging …

Shock-Discharge Interaction Model Extended Into The Third Dimension, Anna Markhotok Jan 2024

Shock-Discharge Interaction Model Extended Into The Third Dimension, Anna Markhotok

Physics Faculty Publications

This work is an addition to the previously developed two-dimensional model of the shock-plasma interaction, extending it into the third dimension. The model can trace the evolution of the state of the hypersonic flow and the shock front refracted at a thermal discontinuity. The advantages of using the spherical coordinate system for this type of problem include increased transparency in interpreting the solution and a shortened calculation procedure, because all the changes to the front are reduced to one distortion component. Although the vorticity generation triggered at the interface is a consequence of the refraction and tied to the steep …

Cebaf Injector At 200 Kv: K-Long Bunch Charge With Spin Flipper Off/On, Sunil Pokharel, Alicia Hofler, Reza Kazimi, Geoffrey Krafft, Max Bruker, Joe Grames, Riad Suleiman, Shukui Zhang Jan 2024

Cebaf Injector At 200 Kv: K-Long Bunch Charge With Spin Flipper Off/On, Sunil Pokharel, Alicia Hofler, Reza Kazimi, Geoffrey Krafft, Max Bruker, Joe Grames, Riad Suleiman, Shukui Zhang

Physics Faculty Publications

The forthcoming K-Long experiment in Jefferson Lab’s Hall D presents distinct beam requirements, marked by a notably low bunch repetition rate and an unusually high bunch charge. Furthermore, the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) Injector requires a parity quality beam for experiments such as the Measurement of a Lepton-Lepton Electroweak Reaction (MOLLER). In this study, to prepare for the upcoming K-Long experiment, using the optimized settings of the magnetic elements and RF amplitude and phases, we conducted simulations covering a range of bunch charge beams, from low to high specifications, while considering concurrent operations across all four Halls at …

Operation Of A Longitudinally Polarized Solid Nuclear Target Of Clas12, P. Pandey, J. Brock, T. Kageya, C. Keith, S. Kuhn, V. Lagerquist, J. Maxwell, X. Wei Jan 2024

Operation Of A Longitudinally Polarized Solid Nuclear Target Of Clas12, P. Pandey, J. Brock, T. Kageya, C. Keith, S. Kuhn, V. Lagerquist, J. Maxwell, X. Wei

Physics Faculty Publications

A suite of experiments measuring spin observables in electron-nucleon scattering (dubbed Run Group C) was recently executed in Jefferson Lab. These experiments involved the scattering of a polarized 11 GeV electron beam from longitudinally polarized nucleon targets located within the CLAS12 spectrometer in Hall B. The dynamically polarized target used in these experiments was designed and constructed exclusively for operation inside CLAS12 and further optimized for the requirements of Run Group C. We report on the complete target setup, operational experience with the target, the benchmarks achieved using various polarizable and unpolarized materials as well as the preliminary target polarization …

Analytic Solutions Of The Dglap Evolution And Theoretical Uncertainties, A. Simonelli Jan 2024

Analytic Solutions Of The Dglap Evolution And Theoretical Uncertainties, A. Simonelli

Physics Faculty Publications

The energy dependence for the singlet sector of Parton Distributions Functions (PDFs) is described by an entangled pair of ordinary linear differential equations. Although there are no exact analytic solutions, it is possible to provide approximated results depending on the assumptions and the methodology adopted. These results differ in their sub-leading, neglected terms and ultimately they are associated with different treatments of the theoretical uncertainties. In this work, a novel analytic approach in Mellin space is presented and a new methodology for obtaining closed and exponentiated analytic solutions is devised. Different results for the DGLAP evolution at Next-Leading-Order are compared, …

Non-Symmetry In The Shock Refraction At A Closed Interface As A Recovery Mechanism, Anna Markhotok Jan 2024

Non-Symmetry In The Shock Refraction At A Closed Interface As A Recovery Mechanism, Anna Markhotok

Physics Faculty Publications

The possibility of a shock wave recovery at a discrete closed interface with a heated gas has been investigated. A two-dimensional model applied to conditions of optical discharges featuring spherical, elliptical, and drop-like configurations demonstrated that non-symmetry in the shock refraction contributes to the specific mechanism of recovery other than simply its compensation. Even though the full restoration of the hypersonic flow state does not occur in a strict sense of it, clear reverse changes toward the initial shape of the shock front eventually take place, thus creating an appearance of a full recovery seen in experiments. From analysis of …

Towards Unpolarized Gpds From Pseudo-Distributions, Hervé Dutrieux, Robert G. Edwards, Colin Egerer, Joseph Karpie, Christopher Monahan, Kostas Orginos, Anatoly Radyushkin, David Richards, Eloy Romero, Savvas Zafeiropoulos Jan 2024

Towards Unpolarized Gpds From Pseudo-Distributions, Hervé Dutrieux, Robert G. Edwards, Colin Egerer, Joseph Karpie, Christopher Monahan, Kostas Orginos, Anatoly Radyushkin, David Richards, Eloy Romero, Savvas Zafeiropoulos

Physics Faculty Publications

We present an exploration of the unpolarized isovector proton generalized parton distributions (GPDs) Hu−d(x, ξ, t) and Eu−d(x, ξ, t) in the pseudo-distribution formalism using distillation. Taking advantage of the large kinematic coverage made possible by this approach, we present results on the moments of GPDs up to the order x3 — including their skewness dependence — at a pion mass mπ = 358 MeV and a lattice spacing a = 0.094 fm.

Conformal Bk Equation At Qcd Wilson-Fisher Point, I. Balitsky, G. A. Chirilli Jan 2024

Conformal Bk Equation At Qcd Wilson-Fisher Point, I. Balitsky, G. A. Chirilli

Physics Faculty Publications

High-energy scattering in pQCD in the Regge limit is described by the evolution of Wilson lines governed by the BK equation [1, 2]. In the leading order, the BK equation is conformally invariant and the eigenfunctions of the linearized BFKL equation are powers. It is a common belief that at d ≠ 4 the BFKL equation is useless since unlike d = 4 case it cannot be solved by usual methods. However, we demonstrate that at critical Wilson-Fisher point of QCD the relevant part of NLO BK restores the conformal invariance so the solutions are again powers. As a check …

Crabbing Cavity System Development For International Linear Collider, Subashini De Silva Jan 2024

Crabbing Cavity System Development For International Linear Collider, Subashini De Silva

Physics Faculty Publications

The International Liner Collider requires a crabbing system to increase the luminosity of the colliding electron bunches. The ILC has a large crossing angle that requires compensation in order to meet the luminosity requirements. There are several frequency options proposed for the crabbing cavity design. Two crab cavity designs were selected to be prototyped in the pre-lab phase, following the Down Selection Review on Crab Cavity Design held in April 2023. The two rf designs selected are the 1.3 GHz rf-dipole cavity and the 2.6 GHz QMiR cavity. We will be presenting the electromagnetic and mechanical design details of the …

Proof Of Principle For A Self-Governing Prediction And Forecasting Reward Algorithm, Jose Osvaldo Gonzalez-Hernandez, Jonathan Marino, Ted Rogers, Brandon Velasco Jan 2024

Proof Of Principle For A Self-Governing Prediction And Forecasting Reward Algorithm, Jose Osvaldo Gonzalez-Hernandez, Jonathan Marino, Ted Rogers, Brandon Velasco

Physics Faculty Publications

We use Monte Carlo techniques to simulate an organized prediction competition between a group of scientific experts acting under the influence of a "self-governing" prediction reward algorithm. Our aim is to illustrate the advantages of a specific type of reward distribution rule that is designed to address some of the limitations of traditional forecast scoring rules. The primary extension of this algorithm as compared with standard forecast scoring is that it incorporates measures of both group consensus and question relevance directly into the reward distribution algorithm. Our model of the prediction competition includes parameters that control both the level of …

Fully Relativistic Derivation Of The Thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect, Balša Terzić, Geoffrey A. Krafft, William Clark, Alexandre Deur, Emerson Rogers, Ioannis Sakiotis, Brandon Velasco Jan 2024

Fully Relativistic Derivation Of The Thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect, Balša Terzić, Geoffrey A. Krafft, William Clark, Alexandre Deur, Emerson Rogers, Ioannis Sakiotis, Brandon Velasco

Physics Faculty Publications

We present the first fully and inherently relativistic derivation of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. This work uses the formalism historically applied to compute radiation spectra emerging from inverse Thomson/Compton sources of x-ray radiation. Comparing our results to the traditional approach based on relativistically-corrected classical Kompaneets equation, we find small, but systematic differences. Most notable are the modest (⩽10%) differences in the crossover frequency where the spectral distortion due to the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect vanishes, and the quadratic scaling of the energy shift with the electron cloud temperatures.

The Discharge-Induced Polarity-Dependent Propagation Characteristics Of A Strong Shock Wave, Anna Markhotok Jan 2024

The Discharge-Induced Polarity-Dependent Propagation Characteristics Of A Strong Shock Wave, Anna Markhotok

Physics Faculty Publications

The specifics of a shock wave propagation down a positive column of a DC discharge in molecular chemically inert gases has been investigated. It was shown that axial gradients caused by the imbalance in the charged particle momentum transfer to the gas molecules can be a reason for the shock velocity dependence on the electric field direction. In pure nitrogen gas, the calculated shock velocity difference of up to 13.5% is in good agreement with the 12% value obtained in the experiment. A returning gas flow organizing in the discharge as a possible mechanism for an extended shock structure and …

The Reggeized pion is expected to provide the main contribution to the forward cross section in light meson photoproduction reactions with charge exchange at high energies. We discuss the Reggeization of pion exchange in charged pion photoproduction with an emphasis on consistency with current conservation. We show that the gauge-invariant amplitude for the exchange of a particle with a generic even spin J ≥ 2 in the t channel is analytic at J = 0 and that it can be interpreted in terms of the nucleon electric current. This enables us to reconcile the dynamics in the s and u …

The electromagnetic form factors of the proton and neutron encode information on the spatial structure of their charge and magnetization distributions. While measurements of the proton are relatively straightforward, the lack of a free neutron target makes measurements of the neutron’s electromagnetic structure more challenging and more sensitive to experimental or model-dependent uncertainties. Various experiments have attempted to extract the neutron form factors from scattering from the neutron in deuterium, with different techniques providing different, and sometimes large, systematic uncertainties. We present results from a novel measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor using quasielastic scattering from the mirror nuclei …

Mass And Isospin Breaking Effects In The Skyrme Model And In Holographic Qcd, Lorenzo Bartolini, Stefano Bolognesi, Sven Bjarke Gudnason, Tommaso Rainaldi

Physics Faculty Publications

We discuss how the quark masses and their mass splitting affect the baryons in the Skyrme model as well as the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto (WSS) model. In both cases, baryons are described by solitonic objects, i.e., Skyrmions and instantons, respectively. After the quantization of their zero modes, the nucleons become quantum states of a rotor. We show how the quark mass affects the moment of inertia and we provide a semianalytic approach valid in the small-mass limit. Additionally, we show how the two lightest quarks’ mass splitting affects the moments of inertia of the Skyrmion and induces an isospin breaking effect. This …

The new experimental measurements of beam spin asymmetry were performed for the deeply virtual exclusive π0 production in a wide kinematic region with the photon virtualities Q2 up to 6.6 GeV2and the Bjorken scaling variable 𝓍B in the valence regime. The data were collected by the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) at Jefferson Lab with longitudinally polarized 10.6 GeV electrons scattered on an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. Sizable asymmetry values indicate a substantial contribution from transverse virtual photon amplitudes to the polarized structure functions. The interpretation of these measurements in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions …

We will describe spin-transparent storage rings that exhibit spin-coherence times of several hours and store a large number of particles and their use in novel applications. For example, these rings can be used to directly measure the electric dipole moment of the electron, relevant to CP violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, and to search for dark energy and ultra-light dark matter*. These rings can also serve as a compelling platform for quantum computing. In this presentation, we will describe how spin-transparent rings can be used in conjunction with ion traps to enhance scalability and increase quantum coherence times …

Toward A Unified Description Of Hadron Scattering At All Energies, D. Stamen, D. Winney, A. Rodas, C. Fernandez-Ramirez, V. Mathieu, G. Montaña, A. Pilloni, A. P. Szczepaniak

The construction of general amplitudes satisfying symmetries and 𝑆-matrix constraints has been the primary tool in studying the spectrum of hadrons for over half a century. In this work, we present a new parametrization, which can fulfill many expectations of 𝑆-matrix and Regge theory and connects the essential physics of hadron scattering in the resonance region and in asymptotic limits. In this construction, dynamical information is entirely contained in Regge trajectories that generalize resonance poles in the complex energy plane to moving poles in the angular momentum plane. We highlight the salient features of the model, compare with existing literature …

Boosted Dark Matter Search With The Icarus Detector At The Gran Sasso Underground National Laboratory, Hector Carranza Jr

Physics Dissertations - Archive

The quest to discover dark matter is one of the most pressing topics in modern physics. Evidence of gravitational anomalies is present at different cosmological scales, spanning the stability and rotation of galaxies to the overall density profile of the entire observable Universe. Due to the discrepancy between the mass measured and the gravitational influence on the mass, if General Relativity is to correctly describe gravity at different scales, extra electromagnetically invisible matter termed dark matter must exist. In recent decades, many experiments have been performed to detect dark matter with masses that span many orders of magnitude, from Mass …

Charged Excitons And Trions In The Semiconductor Quantum Dot: Electronic Structure And Effect Of External Fields, Jayden Leonard Jan 2024

Charged Excitons And Trions In The Semiconductor Quantum Dot: Electronic Structure And Effect Of External Fields, Jayden Leonard

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis, we are studying the electronic structures and optical properties of charged excitons and trions (i.e., the exciton-associated quasi-particles in semiconductor materials) in quantum dots which have a three-dimensional confinement configuration. We also consider the effects of an external electric and magnetic field on the charged excitons. Initially theorized in 1958, charged excitons are a fairly new phenomenon in physics in which an exciton (i.e., an electron coupled with an electron hole) is coupled with either another electron or another hole (giving either a ‘negative exciton’ or ‘positive exciton’ accordingly). In the completely confined configuration like the quantum …

Mechanisms Of Dendritic Shorting In Lithium Metal Batteries With Li7la3zr2o12 Solid Electrolytes, Lukas Karapin-Springorum Jan 2024

Mechanisms Of Dendritic Shorting In Lithium Metal Batteries With Li7la3zr2o12 Solid Electrolytes, Lukas Karapin-Springorum

Pomona Senior Theses

Energy storage will play a crucial role in efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions from human activity. Lithium metal batteries using solid electrolytes like Li7La3Zr2O12 have higher energy density than lithium-ion batteries, which may enable a more rapid and complete electrification of transportation. However, lithium metal batteries suffer from undesirable short-circuiting when metallic lithium deposits connect the two electrodes. It has been debated whether these lithium dendrites generally grow directionally from the anode or are generated by the reduction of lithium ions inside the solid electrolyte, …

Progress In Physics: Twentieth Year Of Publication, Florentin Smarandache, Andreas Ries, Pierre Millette, Ebenezer Chifu

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The journal Progress in Physics was created in January 2005 on behalf of many influential scientists with whom we were in correspondence. The main reason was that publications in other journals were allowed only if the submitter was affiliated with a scientific institution or research organization. Given this situation, many working scientists finding themselves partially employed or unemployed, such as in between research grants, find themselves unable to publish their research results. Even e-print archives such as Cornell’s arXiv required scientific affiliation and still follow this policy.

In this mini-review, we delve into the intriguing realm of quantum communication, spurred by China's recent development of the Tiantong communication satellite. This satellite, shrouded in secrecy, hints at a revolutionary approach to communication that transcends the limitations of conventional signal transmission. We explore the foundational concepts of Bell's inequality and neutrosophic logic, elucidating their roles in understanding the non-local phenomena of quantum entanglement and its potential for secure and rapid communication. Additionally, we examine the connection between Bell's inequality and Shannon information entropy, unveiling the intricate relationship between quantum mechanics and information theory. Through this exploration, we glimpse a …

Possible Evidences For Existence Of An Aether Medium (Or Virtual Inertia/Spin Superfluid Medium), Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The presentation explores the possibility of an aether medium, also referred to as a virtual inertia/spin superfluid medium, existing to explain certain physical phenomena. While the concept of an aether has been historically rejected by mainstream physics, recent findings and interpretations offer potential justifications for its reconsideration. After discussions with several physicists, notably Robert N. Boyd, PhD and others, we are convinced that aether medium does exist, or may be called virtual inertia/spin superfluid medium.

Following our preceding article, where we discussed alternative interpretations of the advanced perihelion of Mercury, the present article revisits the 1919 solar eclipse expedition led by Arthur Eddington, which famously provided the first observational confirmation of Einstein's theory of general relativity. We focus on the deflection of starlight data obtained during the eclipse, a cornerstone of this validation. Here, we explore three alternative explanations for the observed light bending that challenge the sole attribution to general relativity. Firstly, the paper begins by arguing based on criticisms raised by Tullio Levi-Civita, a contemporary mathematician, regarding Einstein's use of pseudo-tensors in his …
