A Novel Method May Reveal Bulk Metallic Glass Compressive Ductility Trends In High Data Rate Nanoindentation, Jordan J. Sickle, Wesley H. Higgins, Wendelin Wright, George M. Pharr, Karin A. Dahmen

Faculty Journal Articles

Recent methods allow novel amorphous alloy compositions to be rapidly manufactured at small scale; however, obtaining materials properties such as compressive ductility from these smaller specimens has remained a challenge. Here, we suggest a potential high-throughput nanoindentation method that may be able to rapidly characterize the relative compressive ductility between these alloys based on their serration characteristics. The properties of emergent serrations, when interpreted in a simple micromechanical stress relaxation model, may order these materials by their compressive plastic strain to failure. These results are consistent with the ordering obtained from compressed specimens as well as with model simulations, suggesting …

High Resolution Assessment Of Commercial Fisheries Activity Along The Us West Coast Using Vessel Monitoring System Data With A Case Study Using California Groundfish Fisheries, Yi-Hui Wang, Benjamin Ruttenberg, Ryan K. Walter, Frank Pendleton, Jameal F. Samhouri, Owen R. Liu, Crow White

Physics

Commercial fisheries along the US West Coast are important components of local and regional economies. They use various fishing gear, target a high diversity of species, and are highly spatially heterogeneous, making it challenging to generate a synoptic picture of fisheries activity in the region. Still, understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of US West Coast fisheries is critical to meet the US legal mandate to manage fisheries sustainably and to better coordinate activities among a growing number of users of ocean space, including offshore renewable energy, aquaculture, shipping, and interactions with habitats and key non-fishery species such as seabirds …

Strong Edge Burst With Bipolar Non-Hermitian Skin Effect, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani Jun 2024

Strong Edge Burst With Bipolar Non-Hermitian Skin Effect, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We consider a system exhibiting the bipolar non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), where bipolar skin states are localized at both edges, and discuss how the topological funneling effect can occur with a single focal point in this system. We explore a topological phase transition from bipolar NHSE to NHSE, which alters the localization characteristics of the eigenstates. After the transition, both the delocalized and bipolar skin states transform into skin states. The non-Hermitian edge burst is a novel and unexpected feature of non-Hermitian quantum dynamics, characterized by substantial particle loss at the boundary of a system. Using the model displaying bipolar …

We study 31 little red dots (LRD) detected by JADES/NIRCam and covered by the SMILES/MIRI survey, of which ∼70% are detected in the two bluest MIRI bands and 40% in redder MIRI filters. The median/quartiles redshifts are z = 6.9 5.9 7.7 (55% spectroscopic). The spectral slopes flatten in the rest-frame near-infrared, consistent with a 1.6 μm stellar bump but bluer than direct pure emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN) tori. The apparent dominance of stellar emission at these wavelengths for many LRDs expedites stellar mass estimation: the median/quartiles are log M ⋆ / M ⊙ = 9.4 9.1 9.7 …

Single-Molecule Orientation Imaging Reveals The Nano-Architecture Of Amyloid Fibrils Undergoing Growth And Decay, Brian Sun, Tianben Ding, Weiyan Zhou, Tara S. Porter, Matthew D. Lew

Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations

Amyloid-beta (Aβ42) aggregates are characteristic Alzheimer’s disease signatures, but probing how their nanoscale architectures influence their growth and decay remains challenging using current technologies. Here, we apply time-lapse single-molecule orientation-localization microscopy (SMOLM) to measure the orientations and rotational “wobble” of Nile blue (NB) molecules transiently binding to Aβ42 fibrils. We correlate fibril architectures measured by SMOLM with their growth and decay over the course of 5 to 20 min visualized by single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). We discover that stable Aβ42 fibrils tend to be well-ordered and signified by well-aligned NB orientations and small wobble. SMOLM also shows that increasing order …

Assigning The Ch Stretch Overtone Spectrum Of Benzene And Naphthalene With Extension To Anthracene And Tetracene Using 2- And 3-Quanta Anharmonic Quantum Chemical Computations, Vincent J. Esposito, Ryan C. Fortenberry, Christiaan Boersma, Louis J. Allamandola

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The CH stretch overtone region (5750–6300 cm−1) of benzene and naphthalene is assigned herein using anharmonic quantum chemical computations, and the trend of how this extends to larger polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is established. The assignment of all experimental bands to specific vibrational states is performed for the first time. Resonance polyads and the inclusion of 3-quanta vibrational states are both needed to compute accurate vibrational frequencies with the proper density-of-states to match the experimental band shape. Hundreds of 3-quanta states produce the observed band structure in naphthalene, anthracene, and tetracene, and this number is expected to increase …

Radiation Induced Conductivity Of Peek: Effects Of Temperature And Total Ionizing Dose, Joshua Boman, Brian Wood, Jordan Lee, Jr Dennison, Kim M. Aaron, Wousik Kim Jun 2024

Radiation Induced Conductivity Of Peek: Effects Of Temperature And Total Ionizing Dose, Joshua Boman, Brian Wood, Jordan Lee, Jr Dennison, Kim M. Aaron, Wousik Kim

Conference Proceedings

Radiation induced conductivity (RIC) plays a critical role in space charge dissipation with insulating materials used in spacecraft. Ionizing radiation present in harsh space plasma environments deposits energy into materials via inelastic scatter, exciting electrons into the conduction band without depositing charge for penetration radiation. RIC is expected to be affected by temperature and total ionizing dose (TID); temperature primarily affects the rate of promotion of electrons in localized trap states within the band gap to the conduction band, while TID can create additional traps states thereby increasing trap density and reducing mean trap separation.

RIC was measured in a …

Time-Dependent Behavior Of Radiation Induced Conductivity In Polymers, Tyler Heggenes, Jenny R. Whiteley, Jodie Corbridge Gillespie, Joshua Boman, Jr Dennison

Conference Proceedings

Ionizing radiation can induce conductivity in polymers via inelastic scattering which imparts energy to electrons in the valence band and trapped states, exciting them into the conduction band without depositing charge into the material. This radiation-induced conductivity (RIC) can impact space charge dissipation within highly insulating materials used in spacecraft in harsh space plasma environments. Previous USU research analyzed only the equilibrium portions of an extensive RIC database for polymeric materials, including Kapton HNTM. This confirmed that equilibrium RIC follows a standard theoretical model that is temperature and dose-dependent. The current study provides a new analysis of RIC's …

Analysis Of The Effects Of Surface Modifications And Other Extrinsic Factors On Electron Yield With A “Patch” Model, Matthew Robertson, Christopher Vega, Trace Taylor, Jr Dennison

Presentations

Electron yield (EY) is a material attribute of central importance to understanding and modeling spacecraft charging. EY is defined as the ratio of emitted electrons to incident electrons, when irradiated with an electron beam. It depends on incident energy and is unique for each material as determined by its chemical composition, crystal structure, and electronic configurations. Dynamic surface modifications and other extrinsic factors—including surface morphology, composition, contamination, oxidation, and charging— can significantly affect EY and consequently spacecraft charging. This research proposes a “patch” model to provide a simple theoretical framework to model more complex materials comprised of any number of …

Time-Dependent Behavior Of Radiation Induced Conductivity Of Polymers, Tyler Heggenes, Jenny R. Whiteley, Jodie Corbridge Gillespie, Joshua Boman, Jr Dennison

Presentations

The conductivity of insulating materials can be enhanced above the baseline dark conductivity by incident radiation via inelastic scattering that imparts energy to electrons in trapped states and excites them into the conduction band, without depositing charge. Such radiation-induced conductivity (RIC), caused by ionizing radiation present in harsh space plasma environments, can play a critical role in space charge dissipation within highly insulating materials used in spacecraft. An equilibrium value for RIC, 𝜎RIC, is attained after prolonged exposure to an incident dose rate; this follows a standard theoretical power law model proposed by Rose/Fowler/Vissenberg, 𝜎RIC(T …

Effects Of Differing Radiation Methods On Charge Transport In Polymers, Zachary J. Gibson, Jr Dennison, Virginie Griseri

Conference Proceedings

Spacecraft charging issues are understood and mitigated through an understanding of material properties. Material properties are dynamic in the harsh environment of space. Approximations must be made to simulate the space environment in the laboratory. This paper reports on the investigation of the approximation that energy deposition causes the same aging effects in the materials regardless of the radiation source. Samples of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyether-etherketone (PEEK) were irradiated with x-rays, γ-rays, or electrons at total ionizing dose (TID) of either 2 x 104, 2 x 105, or 2 x 106 rad. Charge was then …

Development And Application Of Magnus Expansion Based Propagators For Problems In Spectroscopy And Quantum Dynamics, Taner M. Ture

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Stable and accurate numerical propagators of time-evolution equations in quantum mechanics are required to capture correct dynamical behavior, especially in the long time limit. Magnus expansion (ME) provides a general way to expand the real time propagator of a time dependent Hamiltonian within the exponential such that the unitarity is satisfied at any order. Integrators are developed by truncating the ME and using explicit integration of Lagrange interpolation formulas for the time dependent Hamiltonian within each time interval. The derived approximations are studied in a numerical test and compared to other available expressions. The sixth order expression is applied to …

Aspects Of Parity Breaking In Classical And Quantum Fluids, Dylan J. Reynolds Jun 2024

Aspects Of Parity Breaking In Classical And Quantum Fluids, Dylan J. Reynolds

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Parity-breaking is ubiquitous across many scales of physics, from the rotation of galaxies at the largest of scales, to the cyclotron orbits of electrons at the microscopic scale. In describing the collective dynamics of many particle systems, parity breaking effects typically originate from some form of chirality, such as angular momentum, at the level of the constituent particles. External forces can also induce chiral motion, with the primary examples being the Lorentz and Coriolis forces.

The effects of parity breaking are perhaps most strikingly seen in active matter, systems of complex particles that tend to convert energy into some directed …

Positron Emission Tomography In Oncology And Environmental Science, Samantha Delaney

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The last half century has played witness to the onset of molecular imaging for the clinical assessment of physiological targets. While several medical imaging modalities allow for the visualization of the functional and anatomical properties of humans and living systems, few offer accurate quantitation and the ability to detect biochemical processes with low-administered drug mass doses. This limits how physicians and scientists may diagnose and treat medical issues, such as cancer, disease, and foreign agents.

A promising alternative to extant invasive procedures and suboptimal imaging modalities to assess the nature of a biological environment is the use of positron emission …

Modeling And Dynamics Of Capillary Bridges, Moyosore Odunsi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Capillary bridges are ubiquitous in nature and have important implications in processes like inkjet printing. They are an important area of study not only because of their industrial applications but because many of the questions in capillary bridge research are applicable to other systems. For example, they exhibit pinning and unpinning patterns that are similar to those in sliding droplets. The rules underlying this pinning are essential to predicting liquid shapes and understanding how contact lines move across surfaces. Many previous studies have focused on axisymmetric capillary bridges and neglected to model the tangential forces that arise due to asymmetry. …

Ruling Out A Saddle-Point Mechanism Of Ionization In Intermediate-Energy Ion-Atom Collisions, K. H. Spicer, C. T. Plowman, N. W. Antonio, M. S. Schöffler, Michael Schulz, A. S. Kadyrov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Is there a saddle-point mechanism for ionization in intermediate-energy ion-atom collisions Since Olson [Phys. Rev. A 33, 4397 (1986)0556-279110.1103/PhysRevA.33.4397] proposed the idea that the electrons stranded in the potential saddle between the two Coulomb centers dominate the ejected-electron spectra, multiple experimental and theoretical attempts have been made to answer this question. However, the topic has remained controversial. Here we provide a theoretical analysis of this question which can contribute significantly to a definitive answer, at least for intermediate and large projectile energies. To this end we calculate the energy and angular distribution of electrons emitted in proton-helium collisions. We use …

Elastic Electron Scattering From Be, Mg, And Ca, Mehrdad Adibzadeh, Constantine E. Theodosiou, Nicholas J. Harmon

Physics and Engineering Science

We present a comprehensive set of theoretical results for differential, integrated, and momentum transfer cross sections for the elastic scattering of electrons by beryllium, magnesium, and calcium at energies below 1 keV. In addition, we provide Sherman function values for elastic electron scattering from calcium in the same energy range. This study extends the application of our method of calculations, already employed for barium and strontium, to all stable alkaline-earth-metal atoms. Our semi-empirical approach to treating target polarization has produced in our earlier work a satisfactory agreement with experimental values and precise theoretical results such as convergent close-coupling calculations for …

Mechanical Engineering

This report provides a detailed overview of the final design of our light-emitting diode (LED) focusing system. Our system incorporates a converging lens and a specially designed "glass funnel," which acts as a thick fiber optic that narrows the light to a fine point through internal reflection. The glass components of our system are precisely housed in a part made using advanced computer-numeric controlled (CNC) Mill and CNC Lathe manufacturing processes. This ensures high precision and durability of the overall system. Our LED focusing system is designed with a 60-watt stage light. The decision to use a glass funnel as …

Settingsorder Article Reprints Open Accesseditor’S Choicearticle Exploring The Impact Of Spray Process Parameters On Graphite Coatings: Morphology, Thickness, And Tribological Properties, Adedoyin Abe, Josue A. Goss, Min Zou

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study explores, through a full factorial experimental design, the effects of graphite concentration and spray flow rate on the morphology, thickness, and tribological performance of graphite coatings for potential tribological applications. Coatings were applied to rough substrates using varying concentrations and flow rates, followed by analysis of their morphological characteristics, roughness, thickness, coefficient of friction (COF), and wear behavior. The results revealed distinct differences in the coating morphology based on flow rate, with low-flow-rate coatings exhibiting a porous structure and higher roughness, while high-flow-rate coatings displayed denser structures with lower roughness. A COF as low as 0.09 was achieved, …

Phase Error Scaling Law In Two-Wavelength Adaptive Optics, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Matthew Kalensky, Michael J. Spencer

Faculty Publications

We derive a simple, physical, closed-form expression for the optical-path difference (OPD) of a two-wavelength adaptive-optics (AO) system. Starting from Hogge and Butts’ classic OPD variance integral expression, we apply Mellin transform techniques to obtain series and asymptotic solutions to the integral. For realistic two-wavelength AO systems, the former converges slowly and has limited utility. The latter, on the other hand, is a simple formula in terms of the separation between the AO sensing (i.e., the beacon) and compensation (or observation) wavelengths. We validate this formula by comparing it to the OPD variances obtained from the aforementioned series and direct …

Pt-Symmetry And Eigenmodes, Tamara Gratcheva

University Honors Theses

Spectra of systems with balanced gain and loss, described by Hamiltonians with parity and time-reversal (PT) symmetry is a rich area of research. This work studies by means of numerical techniques, how eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a Schrodinger operator change as a gain-loss parameter changes. Two cases on a disk with zero boundary conditions are considered. In the first case, within the enclosing disk, we place a parity (P) symmetric configuration of three smaller disks containing gain and loss media, which does not have PT-symmetry. In the second case, we study a PT-symmetric configuration …
