Systematic Comparison Of Ultraviolet Vs. White Light For Lightboard Illumination, Craig Looney
Systematic Comparison Of Ultraviolet Vs. White Light For Lightboard Illumination, Craig Looney
Physics Faculty Publications
Since Peshkin’s invention of the original open-hardware lightboard, tempered low-iron glass has been the preferred lightboard writing surface: low-iron for maximal transparency, tempered for safety and durability. Unfortunately, the tempering process often leaves marks on the glass that become highly visible when illuminated with edge-mounted white LEDs. One obvious idea is to illuminate the glass with UV LEDs; the UV light should cause the fluorescent marker writing to visibly fluoresce, while UV light scattered by defects should be invisible. McCorkle and Whitener (2017, 2020) reported a qualitative performance enhancement for near-visible UV blacklight illumination, but no systematic investigations have been …

Ultra-broadband metamaterial absorbers (UBMAs) that are compatible with CMOS technology for use in the mid-infrared and long-wave infrared regions are crucial for a variety of applications, including radiative cooling, thermal photovoltaic, and thermal imaging. In this regard, we propose, in this work, a design of an UBMA based on the heavily doped silicon (D-Si) and silicon carbide (SiC). The 3D finite-difference time-domain method is used, mainly, to numerically calculate the optical characteristics of the proposed UBMA. The absorber, which is made up of a periodic array of symmetrical multilayered square rings of D-Si and SiC, achieves high absorption with an …
The Chemistry Of Heavy Elements: Probing Relativistic Chemical Bonding, Barbara Maria Teixeira Costa Peluzo
The Chemistry Of Heavy Elements: Probing Relativistic Chemical Bonding, Barbara Maria Teixeira Costa Peluzo
Chemistry Theses and Dissertations
The bottommost part of the periodic table has a unique chemistry, where the high velocities of the inner-shell electrons prevent their description by the usual Schrödinger equation. The resulting so-called relativistic effects have numerous chemical implications, on both macro and microscale, ranging from physical properties to reactivity. However, experimental probes on these intriguing atoms are limited by their natural availability and, more importantly, the danger associated with their radioactivity. Quantum chemical calculations, on the other hand, face the challenge of far more complex algebra, which demands substantial computational resources. Relativistic Hamiltonians, which act over all electrons in the system, are …

Tunneling Dynamics Of 164dy Supersolids And Droplets, S. I. Mistakidis, K. Mukherjee, S. M. Reimann, H. R. Sadeghpour
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The tunneling dynamics of a magnetic Dy164 quantum gas in an elongated or pancake skewed double-well trap is investigated with a time-dependent extended Gross-Pitaevskii approach. Upon lifting the energy offset, different tunneling regimes can be identified. In the elongated trap and for sufficiently large offset, the different configurations exhibit collective macroscopic tunneling. For smaller offset, partial reflection from and transmission through the barrier lead to density accumulation in both wells, and eventually to tunneling locking. One can also reach the macroscopic self-trapping regime for increasing relative dipolar interaction strength, while tunneling vanishes for large barrier heights. A richer dynamical behavior …

Critical Behavior And Collective Modes At The Superfluid Transition In Amorphous Systems, Pulloor Kuttanikkad Vishnu, Martin Puschmann, Rajesh Narayanan, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the critical behavior and the dynamics of the amplitude (Higgs) mode close to the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition in an amorphous system (i.e., a system subject to topological randomness). In particular, we map the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian defined on a random Voronoi-Delaunay lattice onto a (2+1)-dimensional layered classical XY model with correlated topological disorder. We study the resulting model by laying recourse to classical Monte Carlo simulations. We specifically focus on the scalar susceptibility of the order parameter to study the dynamics of the amplitude mode. To do so, we harness the maximum entropy method to perform the …

Laser 3d Printing Of Diamond-Based Composite Materials For Thermal Management Applications, Nada Kraiem
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
With the trend towards miniaturization of electrical equipment and the constant increase in power density in semiconductor devices, efficient heat management has become a major concern for researchers. Indeed, this technological evolution imposes increasingly strict constraints in terms of thermal dissipation, necessitating innovative solutions to ensure better durability and reliability of components. In this context, the use of composite materials offering high thermal conductivity (TC) and low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) compared to pure metals has become essential to address overheating issues in electronic components.
The utilization of advanced materials such as diamond (D), with exceptional TC and hardness …

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Radiosondes are balloon borne atmospheric instruments that are a critical tool for understanding dynamics in the lower layers of the atmosphere. The low-cost radiosondes developed in the Space and Atmospheric Instrumentation Lab have been further developed to improve the system's use as a science-quality atmospheric instrument that is unique in its ability to simultaneously track multiple sondes with a single ground station. Sensors to measure temperature and pressure were added to improve measurements of the atmospheric state. A printed circuit board shield and 3D-printed shell were designed to make mass manufacturing possible. A thermistor-based temperature sensor was developed and tested …

Lead toxicity has hindered the wide applications of lead halide perovskites in optoelec- tronics and bioimaging. A significant amount of effort has been made to synthesize lead-free halide perovskites as alternatives to lead halide perovskites. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing CsSnI3-based powders mechanochemically with dual light emissions under ambi- ent conditions from CsI and SnI2 powders. The formed CsSnI3-based powders are divided into CsSnI3-dominated powders and CsSnI3-contained powders. Under the excitation of ultraviolet light of 365 nm in wavelength, the CsSnI3-dominated powders emit green light with a wavelength centered at 540 nm, and the CsSnI3-contained powders …

We demonstrated an easy-to-build, portable diffuse reflectance spectroscopy device along with a Monte Carlo inverse model to quantify tissue absorption and scattering-based parameters of orthotopic head and neck cancer models in vivo. Both tissue-mimicking phantom studies and animal studies were conducted to verify the optical spectroscopy system and Monte Carlo inverse model for the accurate extraction of tissue optical properties. For the first time, we reported the tissue absorption and scattering coefficients of mouse normal tongue tissues and tongue tumor tissues. Our in vivo animal studies showed reduced total hemoglobin concentration, lower tissue vascular oxygen saturation, and increased tissue scattering …

Recent developments in 2D magnetic materials have motivated the search for new van der Waals magnetic materials, especially Ising-type magnets with strong magnetic anisotropy. Fe-based MPX3 (M = transition metal, X = chalcogen) compounds such as FePS3 and FePSe3 both exhibit an Ising-type magnetic order, but FePSe3 receives much less attention compared to FePS3. This work focuses on establishing the strategy to engineer magnetic anisotropy and exchange interactions in this less-explored compound. Through chalcogen and metal substitutions, the magnetic anisotropy is found to be immune against S substitution for Se whereas …
On The Nature Of Low-Frequency Power Spectra In Solar Wind Turbulence, Mason Alden Dorseth
On The Nature Of Low-Frequency Power Spectra In Solar Wind Turbulence, Mason Alden Dorseth
Theses and Dissertations
An important challenge in the accurate estimation of power spectra of plasma fluctuations in the solar wind at very low frequencies is that it requires extremely long signals, which will necessarily contain a mixture of qualitatively different solar wind streams. This unavoidably affects the structure of the power spectra by conflating all these different properties into a single power spectrum. This work develops a conditional statistical analysis to accurately estimate the power spectrum at arbitrarily low frequencies for ``pure'' slow solar wind stream, based on estimated autocorrelation functions of signals excluding portions that do not satisfy the required conditions. The …

Generating Bessel Beams With An Elastomeric Replica Of A Weevil Carapace, Paz Victoria T. Ramos, Michie Vianca D. De Vera, Raphael Guerrero
Physics Faculty Publications
We generate a zero-order Bessel beam with a laser beam focused onto an elastomeric replica of a weevil carapace scale. Carapace surface structures are imprinted on an elastomeric cast via soft lithography. The output Bessel beam exhibits the expected properties of non-diffraction over a propagation range of 30 cm. The width of the central spot at a propagation distance of 25 cm is 296:8 μm, corresponding to a replicated weevil scale with a diameter of 64.3 μm acting as an annular slit. Self-healing of the beam after encountering a wire obstruction is also observed.
Radio Propagation Through Density Irregularities In The Auroral Ionosphere, Pralay Raj Vaggu
Radio Propagation Through Density Irregularities In The Auroral Ionosphere, Pralay Raj Vaggu
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A radio wave propagating through a structured or turbulent ionosphere undergoes multiple effects, such as refraction, diffraction, etc., that distort the incident radio wave by inducing phase and amplitude fluctuations. These fluctuations are called ionospheric scintillation. Scintillation effects can be detrimental to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as Global Positioning System (GPS), but the observed effects can be used as a tool to study the underlying plasma process that causes scintillation. Scintillation is commonly seen in equatorial and high-latitude regions. This study centers around the scintillation and its causative plasma processes that dominantly happen in the high-latitude ionosphere …

Gravitational lensing by massive objects along the line of sight to the source causes distortions to gravitational wave (GW) signals; such distortions may reveal information about fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. In this work, we have extended the search for lensing signatures to all binary black hole events from the third observing run of the LIGO-Virgo network. We search for repeated signals from strong lensing by (1) performing targeted searches for subthreshold signals, (2) calculating the degree of overlap among the intrinsic parameters and sky location of pairs of signals, (3) comparing the similarities of the spectrograms among pairs of …
Coherent Backscattering Under Conditions Of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency In Ultracold Rubidium, Joshua D. Carter
Coherent Backscattering Under Conditions Of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency In Ultracold Rubidium, Joshua D. Carter
Physics Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation presents experimental results of coherent backscattering of light in an ultracold ensemble of rubidium atoms confined in a magneto optical trap under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a cascade-type system. Electromagnetically induced transparency was investigated experimentally in both a counterpropagating and orthogonal laser geometry and compared to theory. The experimental results were largely in good agreement with theory. Coherent backscattering was then measured with and without an EIT control field present to investigate the modification, if any, that EIT has on the enhancement of the coherent backscattering cone. The results indicated that the electromagnetically induced transparency …
Measurement Of The Photoproduction Cross-Section Of F1(1285) In The Exclusive Reactions Γp → P′K∓KSΠ± At 7.5 < Eγ < 11.5 Gev With Gluex At Jefferson Lab, Tyler Viducic
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The f1(1285) meson is commonly understood to belong to the axial-vector nonet as the low-mass isoscalar partner to the f1(1420) but has been suggested as a candidate for a KK∗+c.c molecule. A nearly mass-degenerate 0 −+ state has been observed in πp scattering that calls into question the established branching ratios of the f1(1285) decays. Recently, the differential cross-section for the photoproduction of f1(1285) was measured by the CLAS experiment and the results disagreed with theoretical predictions. Additionally, the CLAS experiment did not observe a mass-degenerate 0−+ state. …
Parallel-In-Time Implicit Schemes For Nonlinear Pdes, Subhash Paudel
Parallel-In-Time Implicit Schemes For Nonlinear Pdes, Subhash Paudel
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
An accurate prediction of unsteady physical phenomena arising in various applications (e.g., rotorcraft and turbomachinery flows, fluid-structure interaction, maneuvering flight conditions, etc.) requires a very large number of time steps, thus considerably increasing the total computational time, because conventional time integrators are inherently sequential. Parallel-in-time methods offer a promising direction for drastically reducing the computational time and achieving such scalability that is required for solving these unsteady problems on modern supercomputers with hundreds of thousands of computing cores. The parallel performance of existing parallel-in-time algorithms for nonlinear equations especially of the hyperbolic or mixed type is far from being satisfactory. …
Accelerating The Efficiency Of Multiscale Hybridizable Discontinuos Galerkin Methods For Flows In Heterogeneous Media, Tony Charles Haines
Accelerating The Efficiency Of Multiscale Hybridizable Discontinuos Galerkin Methods For Flows In Heterogeneous Media, Tony Charles Haines
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
A plethora of scientific and engineering problems encountered are multiscale in nature. This multiscale feature often influences simulation efforts wherever large disparities in spatial scales are experienced. Notable examples include composite materials, fluid flow through porous media and turbulent transport in high Reynolds number flow. Although there are promising results from the advancement of modern supercomputer, obtaining direct numerical solution of multiscale problems is very laborious. This difficulty stems from the tremendous amount of computer memory and CPU time required. Parallel computing may be one obvious choice in remedying this issue. However, the complexity and size of the discrete problem …
Investigation Of Cooperative Subradiance In Dense Ultracold Rubidium Ensembles, Brent Michael Jones
Investigation Of Cooperative Subradiance In Dense Ultracold Rubidium Ensembles, Brent Michael Jones
Physics Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation presents results of an experimental investigation of the time resolved fluorescence from a cold and dense ensemble of 87Rb atoms after the sample is illuminated by a short probe pulse. The goal of the experiment was to investigate cooperative subradiant behavior, characterized by a much longer decay time compared to the natural lifetime, induced in an off resonant probe regime. Such long lived states, if controllable, would provide a means to store quantum information. The samples were initially created in a magnetooptical trap before atoms were loaded into a far off resonance trap to achieve atomic densities …
Mesostructure Reconstruction Of Prepreg Platelet Molded Composite With Artificial Intelligence, Richard Larson
Mesostructure Reconstruction Of Prepreg Platelet Molded Composite With Artificial Intelligence, Richard Larson
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Prepreg platelet molded composites (PPMC) are long, discontinuous fiber reinforced polymer materials. PPMC are an important subcategory of composite materials as they are processible into geometrically complex structures and can be produced via high-throughput manufacturing processes, however they have higher stiffness and strength as compared to traditional discontinuous fiber reinforced polymers. However, there is inherent randomness in the structure of PPMCs and as such, PPMC parts frequently require per part testing that is cost prohibitive.
Herein, a method using artificial intelligence is proposed as a more cost-effective method of inspecting PPMC parts. Different artificial intelligence (AI) architectures are explored to …
Eighth-Order Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Eighth-Order Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The calculation of higher-order binding corrections to bound systems is a fundamental problem of theoretical physics. For any nonrelativistic expansion, one needs the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, which disentangles the particle and the antiparticle degrees of freedom. This transformation is carried out here to eighth order in the momenta or to eighth order in the momentum operators, which is equivalent to the eighth order of the fine-structure constant. Matrix elements of the eighth-order terms are evaluated for F5/2 and F7/2 states in hydrogenlike ions and compared with the Dirac-Coulomb energy levels.

We revisit the magnetic properties of the hexagonal ferrite PbFe12-xGaxO19. Recent experiments have reported puzzling dependences of the ordering temperature and the saturation magnetization on the Ga concentration x. To explain these observations, we perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on the effects of an unequal distribution of the Ga impurities over the five distinct Fe sublattices. Ab initio density-functional calculations predict that the Ga ions preferably occupy the 12k sublattice and (to a lesser extent) the 2a sublattice. We incorporate this insight into a nonuniform model of the Ga distribution. Monte Carlo simulations …

BAU Journal - Science and Technology
Ion beam analysis techniques IBA, in particular proton induced X-ray emission PIXE, play an effective and efficient role in the characterization of cultural heritage objects. As early as the 1970s, PIXE technique was applied as reliable analytical technique to determine the elemental composition of archeological artefacts, where many accelerator laboratories worldwide are still involved in such applications. It has the advantage to be multi-elemental (Na to Pb) with major, minor and trace element analysis down to part per million or ppm, fast (few minutes per sample), non-destructive and its possible combination with other IBA techniques that can reveal other information. …
