Simulations Of Electron Detection Systematic Errors For A Ucna+ Experiment, Rashika Gupta Jan 2025

Simulations Of Electron Detection Systematic Errors For A Ucna+ Experiment, Rashika Gupta

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The Ultracold Neutron Asymmetry+ (UCNA+) experiment at the Los Alamos Neu- tron Science Center (LANSCE) Ultracold Neutron source is an upgrade of the UCNA experiment, designed to measure the neutron beta decay asymmetry parameter, A 0 , with a precision of less than 0.2% using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). Neutron beta decay is governed by the weak interaction, and a precise measurement of A 0 provides a determination of the axial-vector to vector coupling ratio, λ = gA /gV . When combined with a measurement of the neutron lifetime, this allows the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element Vud …

Optimizing External Radioactive Calibration Source Strength To Maximize The Livetime Of The Nexo Detector, Thakur P. Bhatta Jan 2025

Optimizing External Radioactive Calibration Source Strength To Maximize The Livetime Of The Nexo Detector, Thakur P. Bhatta

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The proposed next Enriched Xenon Observatory (nEXO) experiment aims to detect neutrinoless double beta decay in 136Xe, a rare process with profound implications for particle physics and our understanding of the neutrino. Achieving the required sensitivity demands ultra-low background conditions, making both material radiop urity screening and precise detector calibration essential. This dissertation addresses two key calibration challenges in preparation for nEXO. First, I investigated discrepancies in calibration efficiency measurements of the high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector named as GeIV located 4850 feet under ground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility, Lead, SD. The root cause for the discrepancy was found …

Structural And Physical Properties Of Solid State Materials: Cegage, Cssni3, And Yb2Si2-XGeXAl, Liam J. Scanlon Jan 2025

Structural And Physical Properties Of Solid State Materials: Cegage, Cssni3, And Yb2Si2-XGeXAl, Liam J. Scanlon

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

We present studies of three independent solid state materials: CeGaGe, CsSnI3, and Yb2Si2-xGexAl.

CeGaGe is a magnetic candidate Weyl semimetal. Magnetic Weyl semimetals have possible technological applications due to their electronically conducting bulk states, magnetic states, and topologically protected surface states. We grew single crystals of CeGaGe using the zone-refinement method and flux-growth method. With single crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction, we found that zone-refined CeGaGe crystallizes with the I41md symmetry (space group 109). With single crystal X-ray diffraction, we found that flux-grown samples of CeGaGe have the …

Exploring Electroweak Baryogenesis Within Real Scalar Models: Theoretical Foundations And Collider Phenomenology, Corine M. Smith Jan 2025

Exploring Electroweak Baryogenesis Within Real Scalar Models: Theoretical Foundations And Collider Phenomenology, Corine M. Smith

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The matter–antimatter asymmetry and the hierarchy problem related to the Higgs boson mass remain key open questions in high energy physics. Electroweak Baryogenesis offers a solution to the asymmetry by modifying the Higgs sector to allow a strongly first-order phase transition. This work investigates two real singlet scalar extensions of the Standard Model, incorporating novel quartic and triple couplings between the new scalar fields, providing a testable framework for vacuum-induced scalar mixing effects and enhanced multi-Higgs boson production. These interactions modify the scalar self-coupling and can induce resonant enhancements in multi-Higgs boson production processes. The theoretical constraints are derived from …

Simulating Positive Ion Distribution In The Protodune Single Phase Detector, Vishnu Pfeiffer Jan 2025

Simulating Positive Ion Distribution In The Protodune Single Phase Detector, Vishnu Pfeiffer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work covers the validation and implementation of a model to solve for argon ion (Ar+) distribution in the ProtoDUNE-SP liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). ProtoDUNE-SP undergoes a constant flux of cosmic ray muons due to surface operation. The performance of the ProtoDUNE-SP provided valuable insights into single-phase technology, membrane cryostat technology, and calibration of cryogenic instrumentation. Still, challenges in achieving precise measurements persist due to the space charge effect—the distortion of the electric field within the detector due to the accumulation of positive argon ions generated from constant cosmic muon flux. The overarching goal of this thesis is …

Applying The Lagrangian Variational Method To Atom Interferometry, Jeffrey W. Heward Jan 2025

Applying The Lagrangian Variational Method To Atom Interferometry, Jeffrey W. Heward

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Atom interferometry in Bose-Einstein condensate systems has emerged as a promising technique for precision metrology. The dynamics of these systems are well-described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), but direct numerical solution of this equation is infeasible for realistic systems. We use the Lagrangian Variational Method (LVM) to approximate solutions of the GPE in 1D and 3D, and we compare the LVM results to the exact solutions. We also present 3D LVM results for a case where numerical solution of the GPE is infeasible.

Novel Methodology And Proof-Of-Concept For Proton Ct Using Spot Profile Rather Than Bragg Peak Location, Brett Albert Ruben Jan 2025

Novel Methodology And Proof-Of-Concept For Proton Ct Using Spot Profile Rather Than Bragg Peak Location, Brett Albert Ruben

Open Access Dissertations

Proton radiation therapy offers a highly precise method for cancer treatment, theoretically providing superior dose deposition characteristics compared to conventional X-ray radiation therapy. Its steep and finite dose fall-off region allows for superior tumor coverage while reducing, though not eliminating, dose to surrounding healthy tissue. However, its full potential is limited by range uncertainties, particularly those arising from the reliance on X-ray-based imaging methods called computed tomography (CT) for proton-based treatment. CT image Hounsfield Units (HU) must be converted to stopping power ratios (SPR) as these ratios are the clinically relevant value for accurately planning particle interactions during proton therapy. …

Beyond The Phonon Gas Model (Pgm): Unraveling The Unique Mechanistic Processes Dictating Thermal Transport In Highly Anharmonic And Disordered Materials, Sandip Thakur Jan 2025

Beyond The Phonon Gas Model (Pgm): Unraveling The Unique Mechanistic Processes Dictating Thermal Transport In Highly Anharmonic And Disordered Materials, Sandip Thakur

Open Access Dissertations

Thermal transport in nonmetallic solids has traditionally been described by the phonon gas model (PGM), in which heat is carried by weakly interacting phonon quasiparticles in an ordered crystalline lattice. However, this model breaks down in materials characterized by strong anharmonicity, dynamic disorder, or structural complexity, features prevalent in many next-generation materials used in energy conversion, optoelectronics, and thermal management. This dissertation investigates thermal transport in such complex materials, including metal halide perovskites (MHPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and 2D-3D heterostructures, through large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and frequency-resolved spectral analyses.

In MHPs, the work reveals …

Development And Application Of Computational Tools For Data-Driven Materials Science., Logan L. Lang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Modern materials science generates vast amounts of data from computational simulations and experiments, creating significant challenges for data processing and analysis. This thesis addresses these challenges through the development and application of computational tools within the framework of Material Data Science (MDS). Contributions span the four pillars of MDS: Material/Molecular Data, Algorithms, Databases, and High-Throughput Processes—with a primary focus on the Algorithm, Data, Database pillars.

For the Algorithm pillar, two Python libraries were developed to streamline common analysis tasks. PyProcar simplifies the post-processing and visualization of electronic structure data (band structures, density of states, Fermi surfaces) obtained from various Density …

Modeling Energetic Electron Precipitation: Radiation Belt Loss, Its Drivers, And Atmospheric Impacts, Zhi Gu Li Jan 2025

Modeling Energetic Electron Precipitation: Radiation Belt Loss, Its Drivers, And Atmospheric Impacts, Zhi Gu Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Energetic electrons in the terrestrial outer radiation belt present significant hazards to spacecraft systems and human operations in space. The intensity of these electrons can vary rapidly and dramatically during geomagnetic storms, governed by a complex competition between acceleration and loss processes. Among these, precipitation into the atmosphere via resonant wave-particle interaction acts as a key loss mechanism. This dissertation focuses on improving the quantification of energetic electron precipitation using physics-based modeling constrained by low-altitude satellite observations.

We begin by developing and validating the Drift-Diffusion model, which simulates low-altitude electron dynamics while accounting for azimuthal drift, pitch-angle diffusion, and atmospheric …

Computational Approaches For Diagnosing Neurological Impairments And Restoring Functional Movement, Serhii Bahdasariants Jan 2025

Computational Approaches For Diagnosing Neurological Impairments And Restoring Functional Movement, Serhii Bahdasariants

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Movement is the primary means by which the nervous system converts intention into interaction with the environment. Voluntary limb motion enables standing, walking, reaching, and grasping—actions that underpin self‑care, communication, and economic participation. When diseases or injuries disrupt the pathways that couple neural commands to muscle forces—whether through cortical stroke, spinal cord injury, or peripheral nerve damage—mechanical outcomes such as weakness, loss of coordination, and ultimately reduced mobility emerge. These impairments cascade into secondary complications, increased dependence on caregivers, and diminished quality of life. Quantifying how the lesion alters the mechanics of movement is therefore essential for designing targeted interventions …

Systematic Methodologies For Magnetic Materials Design, Andres Tellez Mora Jan 2025

Systematic Methodologies For Magnetic Materials Design, Andres Tellez Mora

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Understanding and predicting the magnetic behavior of materials from first principles is one of the central challenges in condensed matter physics. This dissertation presents a systematic framework that bridges ab initio calculations, many-body physics, and effective spin models to analyze magnetic materials in particular, but also more general quantum systems. Starting from the electron many-body Hamiltonian and the second quantization formalism, we derive Density Functional Theory (DFT) and explain how magnetic properties emerge from exchange interactions and can be interpreted as perturbations to the magnetization density. To capture these effects efficiently, we construct Heisenberg models from first principles using the …

Optical Measurements Of Magnetic Fields In Low-Temperature Plasmas Via Quantum Spectroscopy, Tyler James Gilbert Jan 2025

Optical Measurements Of Magnetic Fields In Low-Temperature Plasmas Via Quantum Spectroscopy, Tyler James Gilbert

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Accurate characterization of the magnetic field strength and direction within a plasma is increasingly important as experiments attempt to probe the physics of plasmas at kinetic scales. Non-perturbative laser-based diagnostics which are spatially and temporally localized—such as laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and Thomson scattering for the measurement of ion and electron distribution functions, respectively—are increasingly relied on for measurements in laboratory plasmas. This work seeks to develop a spatially and temporally localized non-perturbative laser-based diagnostic for the measurement of magnetic fields in laboratory-relevant plasmas. Two such techniques are investigated here: Zeeman-split LIF and quantum beat spectroscopy (QBS).

Zeeman-split LIF measures the …

Modeling Relativistic Fluids In Dynamical Spacetimes, Terrence Alphonse Pierre Jacques Jan 2025

Modeling Relativistic Fluids In Dynamical Spacetimes, Terrence Alphonse Pierre Jacques

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Multi-messenger astrophysics opens a new era in our understanding of the most dynamic and energetic systems in the Universe. Correlating gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signals in space and time enables stringent tests of models for core-collapse supernovae, merging supermassive black-hole binaries with accretion disks and jets, and mergers of compact object binaries such as binary neutron stars (BNS) and white dwarfs. Comparisons between models and multi-messenger observations may be used to constrain the neutron-star equation of state (EOS), formation channels for compact-object binaries, and emission mechanisms behind short gamma-ray bursts.

In modeling such astrophysical systems, great success has been achieved by …

Novel Phenomena In Chiral And Disordered Crystals, Zachary Louis Romestan Jan 2025

Novel Phenomena In Chiral And Disordered Crystals, Zachary Louis Romestan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The concept of symmetry is central to our understanding of the physical world. Core symmetries—comprising time reversal, charge conjugation, spatial inversion, and rotation—are integral in maintaining essential conservation laws. They also play a critical role in the manifestation of new quantum phases that arise when these symmetries are disrupted. At the heart of contemporary research in condensed matter physics is the exploration of how basic symmetries interact with material imperfections. This examination delves deeply into the ways that inherent symmetrical properties and structural anomalies within materials influence each other, providing crucial insights into the field. This dissertation presents an investigation …

Synthesis And Analysis Of Materials For Quantum Devices, Mathew Pollard Jan 2025

Synthesis And Analysis Of Materials For Quantum Devices, Mathew Pollard

Doctoral Dissertations

Quantum materials play a pivotal role in the advancement of next-generation technology. Superconducting quantum computing, dissipationless spintronics, or valleytronics offer promising ways forward beyond traditional chip miniaturization. Josephson Junctions (JJs) have already revolutionized quantum information and high precision detectors. Quantum systems, however, are either hard to control, produce, and/or maintain. This calls for a better understanding of microscopic properties and tuning of these quantum states.

In this work, we experimentally investigated growth methods to control the electric and magnetic properties of Topological Insulator (TI) Sb2Te3 through Cr-doping. Our results demonstrate the onset of a Magnetic Topological Insulator (MTI) and have …

The Extreme Mass-Ratio Inspiral (EMRI) refers to binary system with a mass ratio between 104 and 107, where the smaller object loses energy as it inspirals closer to a massive black hole, emitting gravitational waves. It is estimated that there are 105 cycles during the last year before plunge, providing rich information on the evolution of gravitational wave phases. The motion of the smaller object in the strong gravitational field of the massive black hole can reflect the surrounding spacetime structure. The massive black hole is typically located at the center of a galaxy, in which the galaxy environment leaves …

We phenomenologically constrain the small-x and small-𝜉 gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) with the deeply virtual J/ψ production (DVJ/ψP) in the framework of GPDs through universal moment parameterization (GUMP). We use a hybrid cross-section formula combining collinear factorization to the next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy of the strong coupling 𝛼s, with corrections from nonrelativistic QCD to account for the power corrections due to the heavy J/ψ mass. We reach reasonable fit to the measured differential cross sections of DVJ/ψP by H1 at the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator as well as forward gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) from JAM22 global analysis. …

Inclusive electron scattering at carefully chosen kinematics can isolate scattering from the high-momentum nucleons in short-range correlations (SRCs). SRCs are produced by the hard, short-distance interactions of nucleons in the nucleus, and because the two-nucleon (2N) SRCs arise from the same N-N interaction in all nuclei, the cross section in the SRC-dominated regime is identical up to an overall scaling factor. This scaling behavior has been used to identify SRC dominance and to measure the contribution of SRCs in a wide range of nuclei. We examine this scaling behavior over a range of momentum transfers using new data on ²H, …

The total cross section for Compton scattering off atomic electrons, γ + e→γ′+e′, was measured using photons with energies between 6.5 and 11.1 GeV incident on a ⁹Be target as part of the PrimEx-eta experiment in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. This is the first measurement of this fundamental QED process within this energy range. The total uncertainties of the cross section, combining the statistical and systematic components in quadrature, averaged to 3.4 % across all energy bins. This not only demonstrates the capability of this experimental setup to perform precision cross-section measurements at forward angles but also allows us …

Inclusive electron scattering cross sections off a hydrogen target at a beam energy of 10.6 GeV have been measured with data collected from the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. These first absolute cross sections from CLAS12 cover a wide kinematic area in invariant mass W of the final state hadrons from the pion threshold up to 2.5 GeV for each bin in virtual photon four-momentum transfer squared Q² from 2.55 to 10.4 GeV² owing to the large scattering angle acceptance of the CLAS12 detector. Comparison of the cross sections with the resonant contributions computed from the CLAS results on the …

The emittance exchange (EEX) beamline at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) is designed to transfer properties of an electron beam phase space between the transverse and longitudinal planes. Recently, it has been proposed this beamline could be used to convert a microscale transverse modulation created by a TEM grid into a microbunch train in the longitudinal plane. Such a technique would be useful for obtaining nano-scale microbunching that does not rely on the sensitive process of FEL gain. This new approach has been proposed to enable development of a compact free-electron laser at Arizona State, greatly reducing size and cost …

We report the first global extraction of generalized parton distributions, GUMP 1.0, by combining deeply virtual Compton scattering and ρ-meson production data from Jefferson Lab and the Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator with global fits of parton distribution functions, charge form factors, and lattice quantum chromodynamics simulations. Using a conformal moment space parametrization, we achieve a unified description across low- and high-x regions at next to leading order accuracy in perturbative corrections. The results provide state-of-the-art generalized parton distributions consistent with almost all known facts, enabling three-dimensional nucleon imaging in impact parameter space and, at the same time, establishing a benchmark for …

Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities are essential building blocks of modern particle accelerators for scientific research, and they offer unique capabilities that could be transformative for commercial applications. Growth of the domestic SRF industry in North America has faced several challenges over the past decades, as most of the international demand for cavities was supplied by European vendors. This contribution provides a brief review of the domestic industrial vendor space, an outlook of the global demand for SRF cavities and an outline of the challenges leading to this supply chain deficiency. One of the main challenges towards establishing a robust domestic …

We measured the nuclear dependence of the di-pion azimuthal correlation function in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer and a 5 GeV electron beam. As the nuclear-target size increases, transitioning from deuterium to carbon, iron, and lead, the correlation function broadens monotonically. Its shape exhibits a significant dependence on kinematics, including the transverse momentum of the pions and the difference in their rapidity. None of the various Monte Carlo event generators we evaluated could fully replicate the observed correlation functions and nuclear effects throughout the entire phase space. As the first study of its kind in DIS …

Quantum Computation Of Su(2) Lattice Gauge Theory With Continuous Variables, Victor Ale, Nora M. Bauer, Raghav G. Jha, Felix Ringer, George Siopsis

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a quantum computational framework for pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory, using continuous variables instead of discrete qubits to represent the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space of the gauge fields. We consider a ladder as well as a two-dimensional grid of plaquettes, detailing the use of gauge fixing to reduce the degrees of freedom and simplify the Hamiltonian. We demonstrate how system dynamics, ground states, and energy gaps can be computed using the continuous-variable approach to quantum computing. Our results indicate that it is feasible to study non-Abelian gauge theories with continuous variables, providing new avenues for understanding the real-time dynamics …
