Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Relaxation In Molecular Solids Containing Isopropyl Groups. Part 2—The Large Two-Phase Temperature Region In 1,4-Di-Isopropylbenzene, Peter A. Beckmann

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We report a proton n.m.r. study of the large, long-lived two-phase temperature region in 1,4-di-isopropylbenzene (DIB). The proton spectra are characterized by a narrow line superimposed on a 42 kHz broad line. The narrow line shows the chemical shift structure of DIB. When the sample is in the solid state the narrow lines are sharp (<30 Hz) near the melting point of 256 K and they broaden to ca.1.5 kHz at ca. 170 K where they disappear. A variety of selective and non-selective Zeeman relaxation experiments as well as a Goldman–Shen exchange experiment were performed. It is concluded that the two sets of spins do not communicate on any timescale shorter …

Ar+ In The Terrestrial Ionosphere, Jane L. Fox Jan 1986

Ar+ In The Terrestrial Ionosphere, Jane L. Fox

Physics Faculty Publications

The Ar+ densities in the terrestrial ionosphere are computed for both low and high solar activity models. The reaction N2+(υ > 0) + Ar → N2+ Ar+ is found to be a significant source of Ar+, nearly equal to photoionization and electron impact ionization in the high solar activity model. Peak densities of Ar+ of 11 cm−3 near 190 km and 22 cm−3 near 220 km are predicted for the low and high solar activity models. It is suggested that a simultaneous measurement of Ar+ and Ar densities …

Static And Dynamic Properties Of Polystyrene In Good Solvents: Ethylbenzene And Tetrahydrofuran, K. Venkataswamy, Alexander M. Jamieson, Rolfe G. Petschek

Faculty Scholarship

We report static and dynamic light scattering studies of polystyrenes of narrow molecular weight distribution in ethylbenzene (EtPh) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvents. These experiments generate values for z-average radius of gyration, (Rg)₂, weight-average second osmotic virial coefficient, A₂, z-average translational diffusion coefficients, (Dt)z, and hence the diffusion virial coefficients, kD, and the z-average of the inverse frictional radius, 〈Rf-1〉z. The results show that while for a specific molecular weight the 〈Rg〉z values in THF are similar to our experimental values in ethylbenzene and to literature values in benzene or toluene, the A2 values, as well as hydrodynamic radii, are …

We have investigated the CW laser properties of the lanthamide hexa-aluminate La0.9Nd0.1MgAl11O19 at room temperature. When a I cm long crystal is pumped by an Ar+ laser (514 nm) or a Kr+ laser (752 nm), CW emission is obtained with slope efficiencies of 10 and 26 percent, respectively. A four-plate Lyot filter in the cavity forces the LNA crystal to oscillate in either of the two major bands centered at 10 820 A (tuning range 80 A) and 10 545 A (tuning range 35 Å). Resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) involving simultaneous electron capture and projectile K-shell excitation has been measured for calcium ions in charge states ranging from neon like to hydrogen like incident on molecular hydrogen over an energy range 100-370 MeV. The results establish a projectile charge-state dependence for RTE and provide a detailed test of theoretical calculations. The effect of the target-electron momentum distribution on the RTE process is demonstrated by comparing with previous results for calcium ions incident on helium. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Electron capture and loss cross sections have been measured for highly charged (q=13+) sulfur ions with energies 2.5-200 MeV colliding with helium. Electron capture varies by nearly six orders of magnitude over the energy range investigated, while electron loss varies by only about a factor of 2. The capture cross sections are in reasonable agreement with classical and empirical scaling rules, while the loss cross sections agree well with the plane-wave Born approximation. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Previous experimental and theoretical work has found electron capture to be a monotonically decreasing function of energy in fast ion-atom collisions. We report here the experimental observation of nonmonotonic behavior of the electron-capture cross sections in fast collisions of calcium ions, in charge states 16+ to 19+, with molecular hydrogen, in the energy range 97368 MeV. The structure observed in the measured cross sections is attributed to the contribution of resonant transfer and excitation to electron capture. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

The nonadiabatic close-coupled theory of atomic collisions in a radiation field is generalized to include electron spin and is used to consider the weak-field Na–rare-gas (RG) optical collision Na(2S1/2)+RG+nhν μNa(2Pj)+RG+(n-1)hν. The effects of detuning and incident energy on the branching into the atomic Na 3p2P3/2 and 3p2P1/2 states are examined. The cross sections σ(j) are found to have a strong asymmetry between red and blue detuning as well as a complex threshold and resonance structure dependence on energy. Structural And Topological Contributions To The Electronic Properties Of Inhomogeneous Media (Fractal, Electrode, Impedance), Michael Kramer

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Recent theoretical developments in the theory of inhomogeneous media have enabled Physicists to explore various properties of random composites. We demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to the treatment of electrochemical systems, specifically porous structures. A Random Network Model is introduced to represent the porous electrode immersed in electrolyte, and using numerical simulation the a.c. impedance behavior of the system is explored. We explore how various compositional and structural parameters contribute to the electrical properties of the system. The topology of our model is analyzed, and the effect of fractal structures on impedance behavior is considered. To examine the …

Conductivity And Photoconductivity Mechanisms Of Iron And Magnesium Doped Lithium Niobate, Joseph Francis Kirchhoff Jan 1986

Conductivity And Photoconductivity Mechanisms Of Iron And Magnesium Doped Lithium Niobate, Joseph Francis Kirchhoff

Masters Theses

Various compositions of lithium niobate crystals were observed to have an electrical conductivity given by 2.3 x 103 exp(-1.21/kT) Ω-1 m-1 between 200 and 3 15°C. This implies that in this temperature range, all such crystals exhibit comparable carrier concentration and mobility. A model based on intrinsic conductivity is presented which adequately agrees with experiment. In addition, a model is presented by which electronic photoconductivity can be predicted by evaluating the trapping cross-section associated with Fe3+ ions dependent upon their lattice sites"-- Abstract, p. ii

The Homodyne Interferometer And Its Use In Finding The Optical Properties Of Graphite, Steven Randle Frey Jan 1986

The Homodyne Interferometer And Its Use In Finding The Optical Properties Of Graphite, Steven Randle Frey

Masters Theses

"An interferometer based on the principle of homodyning can be used to measure the reflectance of solid samples at microwave frequencies. These measurements provide the low frequency values needed for a Kramers-Kronig analysis. This analysis yields the complex dielectric function, e1+ ie2, and complex index of refraction, n + ik, of the solid. 2 This interferometer was tested on a pressed pellet sample of powdered Dixon 200-10 graphite and yielded satisfactory results. Also investigated were two different methods of signal modulation: mechanical chopping and a rotating wire grid polarizer" Abstract, p. ii

Total Refraction At Oblique Incidence By A Transparent Bilayer Coating On A High-Index Transparent Or Absorbing Substrate, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Transparent bilayer coatings that produce total refraction (TR) of obliquely incident monochromatic light into an underlying substrate are considered. When the substrate is transparent, it is shown that TR takes place without any accompanying change of polarization. Totally refracting bilayers are realizable in the IR where high-refractive-index substrates are available. This is illustrated by a BaF2–ZnSe bilayer on a Ge substrate at a 10.6-μm (CO2-laser) wavelength and 45° angle of incidence. Limited changes of the angle of incidence, wavelength, and refractive indices and thicknesses of the two films of the bilayer are introduced, and their effects …

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee Dec 1985

Investigation Of Electronic Holography Using Spice Computer Simulation Experiments, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Using SPICE experiments, it has been possible to verify most of the important aspects of electronic holography. The generation and properties of dynamic echoes under different types of nonlinearities have been extensively tested, and some new information has been garnered in the process. The case of pulse and generalized memory echoes has also been tested, and the results have been fairly satisfactory. Most of all, the simplicity with which the intriguing concept of memory echoes has translated into the circuit implementation on SPICE, and the closeness of the results to predicted behavior have been somewhat of a pleasant surprise.

Energy Conservation In Large Buildings, A. Rosenfeld, David W. Hafemeister Nov 1985

Energy Conservation In Large Buildings, A. Rosenfeld, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

As energy prices rise, newly energy aware designers use better tools and technology to create energy efficient buildings. Thus the U.S. office stock (average age 20 years) uses 250 kBTU/ft2 of resource energy, but the guzzler of 1972 uses 500 (up × 2), and the 1986 ASHRAE standards call for 100–125 (less than 25% of their 1972 ancestors). Surprisingly, the first real cost of these efficient buildings has not risen since 1972. Scaling laws are used to calculate heat gains and losses of buildings to obtain the ΔT(free) which can be as large as 15–30 °C (30–60 °F) for …

Birefringence Measurements Of The Uniaxial-Stress Dependence Of The Incommensurate Phase Transition In K2Seo4, D. P. Billesbach, F. G. Ullman, John R. Hardy Aug 1985

Birefringence Measurements Of The Uniaxial-Stress Dependence Of The Incommensurate Phase Transition In K2Seo4, D. P. Billesbach, F. G. Ullman, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

The uniaxial-stress dependence of the incommensurate-phase-transition temperature (at 130 K) in K2SeO4 was measured along all three crystal axes by observation of the anomalies in the birefringence caused by the structure change. The results for the c-axis-stress dependence (- 17.0±0.2 K/kbar) agree with previous studies of other workers. This experiment has also provided the first direct measurements of the a-axis- and b-axis-stress dependences (+ 3.1 ±0.2 K/kbar and +7.7± 0.2 K/kbar, respectively). Also, a value of -6.2±0.3 K/kbar was calculated from these data for the dependence of the transition temperature on hydrostatic pressure. This …

Theoretical And Experimental Capacitance-Voltage Behavior Of Al0.3ga0.7as Gaas Modulation-Doped Heterojunctions - Relation Of Conduction-Band Discontinuity To Donor Energy, George B. Norris, David C. Look, W. Kopp, J. Klem, H. Morkoç Aug 1985

Theoretical And Experimental Capacitance-Voltage Behavior Of Al0.3ga0.7as Gaas Modulation-Doped Heterojunctions - Relation Of Conduction-Band Discontinuity To Donor Energy, George B. Norris, David C. Look, W. Kopp, J. Klem, H. Morkoç

Physics Faculty Publications

For the first time, we show that the capacitance-voltage behavior of modulation-doped heterojunctions may be accurately described by a first-principles theory that includes selfconsistent quantum two-dimensional (2-D) electron subbands in the GaAs, numerical solution of Poisson's equation for band bending and space charge in the (Al,Ga) As, and series resistance in the 2-D channel and heterointerface. The excellent agreement found between the theory and measurements on selected high-quality Al0.3Ga0.7 As/GaAs heterojunctions allows accurate determination of the maximum 2-D carrier concentration. From this, we find a strong relationship between the conduction-band discontinuity and donor binding energy, giving offsets. …

Low Temperature Tunneling Dynamics In Condensed Media, Paul Ernest Parris, Robert J. Silbey Aug 1985

Low Temperature Tunneling Dynamics In Condensed Media, Paul Ernest Parris, Robert J. Silbey

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

There has been considerable interest recently in the low temperature dynamics of condensed phase tunneling phenomena. In this paper we consider the interplay between quasiparticle transport and vibrational relaxation; the former taking place via tunneling in a double well potential, and the latter occurring due to interactions of the tunneling system with a harmonic bath. Taking the system-bath interactions to be linear in the bath coordinates, and explicitly allowing for a vibrationally excited well, we present a unified treatment of the weak and strong coupling regimes and obtain reduced equations of motion for the tunneling particle position operator. Solutions are …

Incident Beam Polarization For Laser Doppler Velocimetry Employing A Sapphire Cylindrical Window, James A. Lock, Harold J. Schock Jul 1985

Incident Beam Polarization For Laser Doppler Velocimetry Employing A Sapphire Cylindrical Window, James A. Lock, Harold J. Schock

Physics Faculty Publications

For laser Doppler velocimetry studies employing sapphire windows as optical access ports, the birefringency of sapphire produces an extra beam intersection volume which serves to effectively smear the acquired velocity flow field data. It is shown that for a cylindrical window geometry, the extra beam intersection volume may be eliminated with minimal decrease in the fringe visibility of the remaining intersection volume by suitably orienting the polarizations of the initial laser beams. For horizontally incident beams, these polarizations were measured at three intersection locations within the cylinder. It was found that the measured polarization angles agreed with the theoretical predictions.

Angle-Resolved Photoemission From Bromine Chemisorbed On Ni(100), Peter A. Dowben, Y. Sakisaka, T.N. Rhodin

Peter Dowben Publications

Molecular bromine dissociatively adsorbs to form a chemisorbed overlayer on Ni(100). The bromine induced 4px,y and 4pz orbitals have been identified at Γ̅ with binding energies of 6.6 ± 0.2 eV and 5.3 ± 0.2 eV below the Fermi energy, respectively. The relative ionization cross-section variations of the two bromine levels 4px and 4pz are observed to differ with changing photon energy.

Measuring R And D Productivity, Richard A. Pappas, Donald S. Remer May 1985

Measuring R And D Productivity, Richard A. Pappas, Donald S. Remer

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Measuring the productivity of an R&D organization is extremely tricky. Productivity is usually defined as a ratio of an output, like number of cars produced on an assembly line, to an input, like the wages paid the workers. While R&D may have a measurable input, the output is often intangible and difficult to quantify. This is further complicated because the return from an R&D department may not be realized for one or two decades, which means the time lag is much higher than in factory measurements. Furthermore, many researchers believe that this kind of measurement may be counterproductive, since the mere act …

Explicit Equations For The Polarizing Angles Of A High-Reflectance Substrate Coated By A Transparent Thin Film, R. M.A. Azzam Mar 1985

Explicit Equations For The Polarizing Angles Of A High-Reflectance Substrate Coated By A Transparent Thin Film, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Simple explicit equations are derived that determine the angles of incidence at which the parallel and perpendicular polarization components of light are extinguished on reflection from a transparent film coating a high-reflectance (metallic) substrate. The polarizing angles obtained from our approximate expressions are in excellent agreement with those determined by iterative numerical solution of the exact nonlinear equations that govern such angles. For the approximation to be valid, the intensity reflectance of the film-substrate interface, evaluated at the critical angle of the film-ambient interface, must exceed 0.5.

Antireflecting And Polarizing Transparent Bilayer Coatings On Absorbing Substrates At Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, Karim Javily

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The condition of zero reflection of p- and s-polarized light by a transparent bilayer on an absorbing substrate is derived in the form |gν(ø,Ni)| ≤ 1, where gν is a function of the angle of incidence ø, the refractive indices Ni(i = 0,1,2,3) of the system, and the polarization state ν (= p or s). As an application, the air-Si3N4-SiO2-Si system is considered at two laser wavelengths λ = 6328 and 3250 Å. The thicknesses of the two films of the bilayer and the …

Single-Layer Antireflection Coatings On Absorbing Substrates For The Parallel And Perpendicular Polarizations At Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam Feb 1985

Single-Layer Antireflection Coatings On Absorbing Substrates For The Parallel And Perpendicular Polarizations At Oblique Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Explicit equations are derived that determine the refractive index of a single layer that suppresses the reflection of p- or s-polarized light from the planar interface between a transparent and an absorbing medium at any given angle of incidence. The required layer thickness and the system reflectance for the orthogonal unextinguished polarization also follow explicitly. This generalizes earlier work that was limited to normal incidence or to oblique incidence at dielectric—dielectric interfaces. Specific examples are given of p- and s-antireflection layers on Si and Al substrates at λ = 6328 Å at various angles of incidence.

The p- and s-polarized components of light can be suppressed on reflection at the same angle of incidence from an absorbing substrate coated by a transparent thin film if the wave is refracted in the film at 45° and the constraint Re[(ε2 - α)/(l -α)]1/2 = α + | ε2 - α| is satisfied, where 2α and ε2 are the ratios of dielectric constants of the film and substrate, respectively, to that of the ambient. For high-reflectance metal substrates (|ε2| » 1), α≈ 1, the ratio of film to ambient refractive index …

Refilling Of Geosynchronous Flux Tubes As Observed At The Equator By Geos 2, Jan Josef Sojka, G. L. Wrenn Jan 1985

Refilling Of Geosynchronous Flux Tubes As Observed At The Equator By Geos 2, Jan Josef Sojka, G. L. Wrenn

All Physics Faculty Publications

During periods of extended quiet geomagnetic activity the geosynchronous satellite orbit lies inside the plasmasphere. Five such periods were observed by the GEOS 2 satellite. During the initial 48 hours of such periods the equatorial plasma flux tube density increases at 30 to 50 cm−3/day. However, on reaching ∼100 cm−3 the refilling rate decreases, and refilling is limited. Only when the density reaches ∼100 cm−3 do the plasma characteristics and fluctuations appear to be plasmaspheric and the flow predominantly corotational. The “hot outer zone” of the plasmasphere is highly structured in density and temperature when viewed …
