The Optical Emission And Absorption Properties Of Silicon-Germanium Superlattice Structures Grown On Non-Conventional Silicon Substrate Orientation, Theodore L. Kreifels Aug 1994

The Optical Emission And Absorption Properties Of Silicon-Germanium Superlattice Structures Grown On Non-Conventional Silicon Substrate Orientation, Theodore L. Kreifels

Theses and Dissertations

Optical emission and absorption properties of Si1-x Gex/Si superlattices grown on (100), (110), and (111) Si substrates were investigated to determine the optimal growth conditions for these structures to be used as infrared detectors. Fully-strained Si1-x Gex/Si superlattices were grown by molecular beam epitaxy MBE and examined using low-temperature photoluminescence PL to identify no-phonon and phonon-replica interband transitions across the alloy bandgap. Phonon-resolved emission was most intense for undoped quantum wells grown at 710°C for all three silicon orientations. Room temperature absorption measurements were conducted on (100) and (110) Si1-x Gex/Si …

Effect Of Carrier Gas Pressure On Condensation In A Supersonic Nozzle, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Gerald Wilemski, M. G. Beals, Michael B. Frish Aug 1994

Effect Of Carrier Gas Pressure On Condensation In A Supersonic Nozzle, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Gerald Wilemski, M. G. Beals, Michael B. Frish

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Supersonic nozzle experiments were performed with a fixed water or ethanol vapor pressure and varying amounts of nitrogen to test the hypothesis that carrier gas pressure affects the onset of condensation. Such an effect might occur if nonisothermal nucleation were important under conditions of excess carrier gas in the atmospheric pressure range, as has been suggested by Ford and Clement [J. Phys. A 22, 4007 (1989)]. Although a small increase was observed in the condensation onset temperature as the stagnation pressure was reduced from 3 to 0.5 atm, these changes cannot be attributed to any nonisothermal effects. The pulsed nozzle …

Investigation Of Computational And Spectral Analysis Methods For Aeroacoustic Wave Propagation, Florence Odile Vanel Jul 1994

Investigation Of Computational And Spectral Analysis Methods For Aeroacoustic Wave Propagation, Florence Odile Vanel

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Most computational fluid dynamics (CFD) schemes are not adequately accurate for solving aeroacoustics problems, which have wave amplitudes several orders of magnitude smaller yet with frequencies larger than the flow field variations generating the sound. Hence, a computational aeroacoustics (CAA) algorithm should have minimal dispersion and dissipation features. A dispersion relation preserving (DRP) scheme is, therefore, applied to solve the linearized Euler equations in order to simulate the propagation of three types of waves, namely: acoustic, vorticity, and entropy waves. The scheme is derived using an optimization procedure to ensure that the numerical derivatives preserve the wave number and angular …

Projectile And Electron Spectra Resulting From Positron-Argon Collisions, R. A. Sparrow, Ronald E. Olson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A three-body classical trajectory Monte-Carlo calculation is used to evaluate the differential cross sections for the ejected electron, as well as the projectile scattering for 50, 100 and 150 eV e++Ar0 electron removal collisions. In the ionized eleciron spectra both the electron capture to the continuum (ecc) and binary peak structures are observed. The theoretical ecc peak is diffuse and shifted to lower energies than expected from simple arguments. The calculated double differential cross sections for electron ejection have been compared to experiment, When the experimental apparatus function of Moxom et al is used to convolute the theoretical spectra, good …

Photoconductivity And Grating Response Time Of A Photorefractive Polymer, Brian E. Jones, Stephen Ducharme, Martin M Liphardt, Arosha Goonesekera, James M. Takacs, Lei Zhang, Rajan Athalye

Stephen Ducharme Publications

We report the photoconductive properties and photorefractive grating response time of a polymer mixture composed of 40-wt. % dissolved diethylamino-benzaldehyde diphenyl hydrazone (DEH) and the non-cross-linking epoxy polymer Bisphenol A 4,4'-nitroaminostilbene. The films have improved photoconductive sensitivities as high as 2.1 × 10–10 cm/(W Ω) at a wavelength of 650 nm with a corresponding reduction of the grating response time constant to 0.11 ± 0.02 s at an intensity of 1 W/cm2. The nitro-aminostilbene chromophore is deduced to be the source of photogenerated charge carriers on the basis of a comparison of the wavelength dependence of the …

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding Jun 1994

Spatio-Temporal Pattern Recognition Using Hidden Markov Models, Kenneth H. Fielding

Theses and Dissertations

A new spatio-temporal method for identifying 3D objects found in 2D image sequences is presented. The Hidden Markov Model technique is used as a spatio-temporal classification algorithm to identify 3D objects by the temporal changes in observed shape features. A new information theoretic argument is developed that proves identifying objects based on image sequences can lead to higher classification accuracies than single look methods. A new distance measure is proposed that analyzes the performance of Hidden Markov Models in a multi-class pattern recognition problem. A three class problem identifying moving light display objects provides experimental verification of the sequence processing …

This study on praseodymium Pr luminescence in AlxGa1-xAs was conducted to enhance the understanding of the excitation mechanism. Pr was implanted at 390 keV with doses from 5 x 1012 to 5 x 1013 cm2 into AlxGa1-xAs x0.0 to 0.50 wafers which were annealed using the rapid thermal annealing RTA method. Low temperature photoluminescence PL was conducted using an Ar-ion laser and Ge detector. PL emissions of Pr from all hosts include peaks near 1.3 and 1.6 µm which are assigned to the intra-4f transitions of 1G4 yielding 3H5 …

A Diffraction-Based Model Of Anisoplanatism Effects In Adaptive Optic Systems, Steven E. Troxel Jun 1994

A Diffraction-Based Model Of Anisoplanatism Effects In Adaptive Optic Systems, Steven E. Troxel

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a new model for computing the angle dependent performance measures of an adaptive-optics system. By incorporating diffraction caused by the index-of-refraction variations of the atmosphere, the phase and amplitude fluctuations of the propagating wave are computed. New theory is presented, that uses the diffraction-based propagation model to yield optical transfer function (OTF) expressions that are more accurate as compared to current theory that neglects diffraction. An evaluation method for calculating the OTF is presented that utilizes a layered atmospheric model and normalized OTF expressions. The diffraction model is also used to present the first OTF signal-to-noise ratio …

Magnetic And Magneto-Optic Properties Of Sputtered Co/Ni Multilayers, Y. B. Zhang, P. He, John A. Woollam, J. X. Shen, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer May 1994

Magnetic And Magneto-Optic Properties Of Sputtered Co/Ni Multilayers, Y. B. Zhang, P. He, John A. Woollam, J. X. Shen, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer

Roger Kirby Publications

We have investigated the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of Co/Ni multilayers deposited on Ag and Au buffer layers. The samples with Au buffer layers show perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, but those with Ag buffer layers do not. The. structure and degree of crystalline alignment of the buffer layer are evidently crucial to development of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We also present the results of polar Kerr rotation measurements as a function of wavelength and layer thickness of the multilayers.

Magneto-Optical And Structural Properties Of Bialdylg/Fe Multilayers, J. X. Shen, Kurt W. Wierman, Y. B. Zhang, Roger D. Kirby, John A. Woollam, David J. Sellmyer May 1994

Magneto-Optical And Structural Properties Of Bialdylg/Fe Multilayers, J. X. Shen, Kurt W. Wierman, Y. B. Zhang, Roger D. Kirby, John A. Woollam, David J. Sellmyer

Roger Kirby Publications

Bi- and Al-doped DyIG(y Å)/Fe(x Å) (y = 50 to 130 Å and x = 5 to 15 Å ) multilayer thin films were made by magnetron sputtering onto Si(111) substrates. Rapid thermal annealing was used to crystallize these garnet multilayers. The crystallized multilayer samples possess well-defined interfaces. Atomic force microscopy showed that the annealed samples had smooth surfaces, with small grain sizes (~30 to 80 nm). All of the samples had perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with very square hysteresis loops. The coercivity was found to vary from 600 Oe to 2 kOe, depending on Fe thickness and annealing …

Temperature-Dependent Interface Magnetism And Magnetization Reversal In Co/Pt Multilayers, Z. S. Shan, J. X. Shen, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer, Y. J. Wang May 1994

Temperature-Dependent Interface Magnetism And Magnetization Reversal In Co/Pt Multilayers, Z. S. Shan, J. X. Shen, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer, Y. J. Wang

Roger Kirby Publications

We report on the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties and interface magnetism of Co/Pt multilayers. The magnetic properties including magnetization and anisotropy change substantially as the temperature varies from 300 to 10 K for samples with Co layer thickness in the range from 3 to 7 Å. The interface anisotropy of about 0.38 erg/cm2 is nearly independent of temperature. The magnetization reversal is dominated by domain wall motion for the thinner Co layers and dominated by nucleation for the thicker Co layers.

Ccd Photometry At The Umr Observatory, Christopher P. Smith

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

During the summer of 1993 a number of advances at the University of Missouri-Rolla’s observatory have taken place. These advances range from cleaning the mirrors and polar aligning the 16-inch Cassegrain telescope to the acquisition of needed supporting material. A program for observing variable stars, implementing the newly acquired CCD1R image reduction program, searching galaxies for supernova, and the possibility of adding low resolution stellar spectroscopy to our research capabilities will be discussed. This manual will discuss how to implement the new CCDIR program.

Heterojunction Fabrication By Selective Area Chemical Vapor Deposition Induced By Synchrotron Radiation, Dongjin Byun, Seong-Don Hwang, Peter A. Dowben, F. Keith Perkins, F. Filips, N.J. Ianno Apr 1994

Heterojunction Fabrication By Selective Area Chemical Vapor Deposition Induced By Synchrotron Radiation, Dongjin Byun, Seong-Don Hwang, Peter A. Dowben, F. Keith Perkins, F. Filips, N.J. Ianno

Peter Dowben Publications

We have fabricated a B5C, boron-carbide/Si(111) heterojunction diode by the synchrotron radiation-induced decomposition of orthocarborane. This diode can be compared with similar boron-carbide/Si(111) heterojunction diodes fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The synchrotron radiation induced chemical vapor deposition is postulated to occur via the decomposition of weakly chemisorbed species and the results suggest that “real-time'' projection lithography (selective area deposition) of boron-carbide devices is possible.

Flow Simulations About Steady-Complex And Unsteady Moving Configurations Using Structured-Overlapped And Unstructured Grids, James Charles Newman Iii Apr 1994

Flow Simulations About Steady-Complex And Unsteady Moving Configurations Using Structured-Overlapped And Unstructured Grids, James Charles Newman Iii

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The limiting factor in simulating flows past realistic configurations of interest has been the discretization of the physical domain on which the governing equations of fluid flow may be solved. In an attempt to circumvent this problem, many Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) methodologies that are based on different grid generation and domain decomposition techniques have been developed. However, due to the costs involved and expertise required, very few comparative studies between these methods have been performed. In the present work, the two CFD methodologies which show the most promise for treating complex three-dimensional configurations as well as unsteady moving boundary …

A Direct Numerical Simulation Of Vortex Breakdown Induced Tail Buffet, Steven James Massey Apr 1994

A Direct Numerical Simulation Of Vortex Breakdown Induced Tail Buffet, Steven James Massey

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A simulation of tail buffet is presented for a delta wing-vertical tail configuration. Flow conditions are chosen such that the wing primary-vortex cores experience vortex breakdown and the resulting turbulent wake flow impinges on the vertical tail. The dimensions and material properties of the vertical tail are chosen such that the deflections are large enough to insure interaction with the flow, and the natural frequencies are high enough to facilitate a practical computational solution. This multidisciplinary problem is solved sequentially for the fiuid flow, the elastic deformations and the grid displacements. The fluid flow is simulated by time accurately solving …

Unsteady Flow Simulations About Moving Boundary Configurations Using Dynamic Domain Decomposition Techniques, Guan-Wei Yen Apr 1994

Unsteady Flow Simulations About Moving Boundary Configurations Using Dynamic Domain Decomposition Techniques, Guan-Wei Yen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A computational method is developed to solve the coupled governing equations of an unsteady flowfield and those of rigid-body dynamics in six degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF). This method is capable of simulating the unsteady flowfields around multiple component configurations with at least one of the components in relative motion with respect to the others. Two of the important phenomena that such analyses can help us to understand are the unsteady aerodynamic interference and the boundary-induced component of such a flowfield. By hybridizing two dynamic domain decomposition techniques, the grid generation task is simplified, the computer memory requirement is reduced, and the governing …

Optimal Active And Passive Control Design For A Slewing Piezoelectric Laminate Beam, Travis V. Dubois Apr 1994

Optimal Active And Passive Control Design For A Slewing Piezoelectric Laminate Beam, Travis V. Dubois

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents the development and experimental verification of a distributed parameter model for a slewing beam system with piezoelectric actuators and sensors. Also presented is the development of an optimal active control synergism which employs IMSC, (Independent Modal Space Control) and an optimally designed, viscoelastic damping treatment. The beam is pinned at the proximal end and patches of thin piezoelectric laminates are attached to its surface. Formulation is general enough to allow the patches to be located anywhere on the beam's surface. A viscoelastic material with a constraining layer covers the rest of the beam. The differential equation of …

High Energy Coupled Nucleon Tranpsort In One Dimension, Stanley L. Lamkin Apr 1994

High Energy Coupled Nucleon Tranpsort In One Dimension, Stanley L. Lamkin

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The problem of energetic nucleon transport through extended bulk matter is considered in the context of the 'straight ahead' approximation. The applicable form of the Boltzmann transport equation is derived and solved in one dimension. The production term for secondary generation nucleons due to nuclear fragmentation includes 'coupling' of the flux to other types of nucleon projectiles. A physically motivated perturbation series approach is developed to enhance solution convergence. The Boltzmann operator is inverted and the flux is computed using a numerical marching scheme. The secondary production integrals are optimized for second order accuracy using a set of analytical benchmarks. …

Derivative Absorption Spectroscopy With Tunable Laser Diodes, Andrew D. Jackson Apr 1994

Derivative Absorption Spectroscopy With Tunable Laser Diodes, Andrew D. Jackson

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Derivative Absorption Spectroscopy using tunable diode lasers provides a non intrusive, sensitive, and convenient method for monitoring gaseous characteristics such as concentration, temperature, and flow velocity. In addition, the specie type can be identified, and if the equation of state is known, pressure may be deduced.

This technique was used on molecular oxygen, in which the rovibronic transitions of the A-band ( b 1 ∑g + ← X 3 ∑g - ; vII = O, vI = O) were probed. Phase sensitive detection with a lock-in amplifier provides the flexibility to examine lineshape derivatives; several such derivative …

Solar Spectroscopy Using 50 Meters Of Fiber Optic Cable And Ccd Camera, Christopher P. Smith Mar 1994

Solar Spectroscopy Using 50 Meters Of Fiber Optic Cable And Ccd Camera, Christopher P. Smith

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Measurements of the variation of the Can K line profile using very modest equipment is discussed. The equipment used included a Spex 0.75 meter spectrometer, a Santa Barbara Instrument Group 16 bit ST-6 Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera, fiber optic cable, and a 10-inch Cassegrain telescope. Observations were made in both regions of little or no solar activity as well as in regions of high solar activity (sunspots). A roughly 8% increase in Ca II K emission was observed over a sunspot. The combination of the unique observing apparatus and the intensity resolution of the CCD camera was essential for …

Rank Conditioned Rank Selection Filters For Signal Restoration, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth E. Barner Mar 1994

Rank Conditioned Rank Selection Filters For Signal Restoration, Russell C. Hardie, Kenneth E. Barner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A class of nonlinear filters called rank conditioned rank selection (RCRS) filters is developed and analyzed in this paper. The RCRS filters are developed within the general framework of rank selection(RS) filters, which are filters constrained to output an order statistic from the observation set. Many previously proposed rank order based filters can be formulated as RS filters. The only difference between such filters is in the information used in deciding which order statistic to output. The information used by RCRS filters is the ranks of selected input samples, hence the name rank conditioned rank selection filters. The number of …

Feasibility Analysis For Predicting A Kinetic Kill Zone For Aircraft Homing Missile Defense, Mark E. Ennis Mar 1994

Feasibility Analysis For Predicting A Kinetic Kill Zone For Aircraft Homing Missile Defense, Mark E. Ennis

Theses and Dissertations

An extended Kalman filter is used to predict a kinetic kill zone for use in aircraft self defense versus homing missiles. The analysis is limited to an in-the-plane analysis and focuses on finding the model parameters which have the largest impact on the predicted kill zone. No attempt is made to optimize the design of the filter model itself. The analysis computes the kill zone relative to an assumed aircraft trajectory using strictly filter computed statistics. No Monte-Carlo simulations are used throughout the thesis. The filter assumed to be on the evading aircraft, uses an onboard laser radar (ladar) to …

The Spatial Evolution Of Particles Diffusing In The Presence Of Randomly Placed Traps, David H. Dunlap, Randall A. Laviolette, Paul Ernest Parris Feb 1994

The Spatial Evolution Of Particles Diffusing In The Presence Of Randomly Placed Traps, David H. Dunlap, Randall A. Laviolette, Paul Ernest Parris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The evolution of a particle undergoing a continuous-time random walk in the presence of randomly placed imperfectly absorbing traps is studied. At long times, the spatial probability distribution becomes strongly localized in a sequence of trap-free regions. The subsequent intermittent transfer of the survival probability from small trap-free regions to larger trap-free regions is described as a time-directed variable range hopping among localized eigenstates in the Lifshitz tail. An asymptotic expression for the configurational average of the spatial distribution of surviving particles is obtained based on this description. The distribution is an exponential function of distance which expands superdiffusively, with …

Additive Pulse Mode-Locking Using A Birefringent Optical Fiber, Sandra F. Feldman, B. A. Moore, Doreen A. Weinberger, Herbert G. Winful Jan 1994

Additive Pulse Mode-Locking Using A Birefringent Optical Fiber, Sandra F. Feldman, B. A. Moore, Doreen A. Weinberger, Herbert G. Winful

Physics: Faculty Publications

A powerful and increasingly common method to mode-lock a variety of lasers is additive pulse mode-locking (APM). In this technique, a nonlinear medium is placed in an external cavity which is coupled to the main laser cavity. As a result of interference at the common mirror between the pulses returning from each cavity, significant pulse shortening may be obtained. Optical fiber is often used as the nonlinear medium, and polarization effects and fiber birefringence are generally neglected. A computer model has been developed in order to simulate the effect of using a birefringent fiber. The simulations indicate that although the …
