Electromagnetic Simulations Of The Lansce Chopper Structure, Yusuf Sahin Aug 2023

Electromagnetic Simulations Of The Lansce Chopper Structure, Yusuf Sahin

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Particle accelerators are important for basic research as well as in applications such as ion implantation and cancer therapy. One important accelerator is the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) located at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) that primarily produces neutrons for research. The beam chopper simulation described here is a study to provide better modeling of this subsystem of LANSCE. A chopper is a device in which particles are intermittently sliced and directed to a target and/or experiment. The simulations in this thesis are used to analyze the correct operating parameters of the chopper. A good chopper model can …

Spectral Broadening Effects On Pulsed-Source Digital Holography, Steven A. Owens, Mark F. Spencer, Glen P. Perram Aug 2023

Spectral Broadening Effects On Pulsed-Source Digital Holography, Steven A. Owens, Mark F. Spencer, Glen P. Perram

Faculty Publications

Using a pulsed configuration, a digital-holographic system is setup in the off-axis image plane recording geometry, and spectral broadening via pseudo-random bit sequence is used to degrade the temporal coherence of the master-oscillator laser. The associated effects on the signal-to-noise ratio are then measured in terms of the ambiguity and coherence efficiencies. It is found that the ambiguity efficiency, which is a function of signal-reference pulse overlap, is not affected by the effects of spectral broadening. The coherence efficiency, on the other hand, is affected. As a result, the coherence efficiency, which is a function of effective fringe visibility, is …

Entangled Photon Anti-Correlations Are Evident From Classical Electromagnetism, Ken Wharton, Emily Adlam Aug 2023

Entangled Photon Anti-Correlations Are Evident From Classical Electromagnetism, Ken Wharton, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

For any experiment with two entangled photons, some joint measurement outcomes can have zero probability for a precise choice of basis. These perfect anti-correlations would seem to be a purely quantum phenomenon. It is, therefore, surprising that these very anti-correlations are also evident when the input to the same experiment is analyzed via classical electromagnetic theory. Demonstrating this quantum–classical connection for arbitrary two-photon states and analyzing why it is successful motivates alternative perspectives concerning entanglement, the path integral, and other topics in quantum foundations.

Photon Counting Statistics Of Classical And Quantum Light Sources, Luis Felipe Morales Bultron Aug 2023

Photon Counting Statistics Of Classical And Quantum Light Sources, Luis Felipe Morales Bultron

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Multiple sources of light, including coherent light, thermal light, light from a degenerate parametric oscillation and resonance fluorescence from a two level coherently driven atom are considered for the analysis of their wait time statistics. We include the second order normalized correlation function and Mandel's Q parameter for brief discussion. A general framework to analyze the generalized conditional and unconditional wait time distributions is also obtained in order to understand the photo-count statistics of the light sources included in this work. Average and variance of wait times with respect to both unconditional and conditional wait time distribution are also obtained …

Circuitry And Semiconductor Studies For Making A Graphene Energy Harvesting Device, Ferdinand Harerimana

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Freestanding graphene has constantly moving ripples. Due to its extreme flexibility, graphene responds to ambient vibrations and changes its curvature from concave to convex and vice versa. During a ripple inversion 10,000 atoms move together, suggesting the presence of kinetic energy which can be harvested. In this study we present circuitry and semiconductor studies for harvesting energy from graphene vibrations. The goal of the study is to develop a graphene energy harvesting chip which can serve as a battery replacement in low power electronics. In the first study we determined the best circuit for harvesting vibrational low power. To do …

Lepton Flavor Violation And Lepton Flavor Universality Violation: Opportunity For New Physics Beyond The Standard Model, Fang Xu Aug 2023

Lepton Flavor Violation And Lepton Flavor Universality Violation: Opportunity For New Physics Beyond The Standard Model, Fang Xu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics has been remarkably successful in explaining the fundamental forces and classifying elementary particles. However, there are various experimental and theoretical indications that suggest the need to go beyond the SM (BSM) and expand our understanding of the fundamental nature of the universe. From a theoretical perspective, there are several limitations of the SM that suggest the existence of a more fundamental theory. For example, the SM does not incorporate gravity, and it fails to explain the hierarchy problem. Additionally, the nature of dark matter and the origin of the mass hierarchy of elementary …

Heterochiral Dna Nanotechnology For Biomedical Applications, Tracy L. Mallette Aug 2023

Heterochiral Dna Nanotechnology For Biomedical Applications, Tracy L. Mallette

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

In the past 30 years, there have been major advancements on how to treat and diagnose disease because of the improvement and increase in accessibility of sequencing technology. Nucleic acid-based therapeutics can manipulate protein expression. Likewise, pathogens can be identified and detected with single nucleotide specificity. However, the underlying oligonucleotide technology requires protection against natural defense systems that have evolved to destroy foreign nucleic acids. Many chemical modifications that can protect nucleotides also have significant cytotoxic side effects and must be carefully designed into the strands. A novel way to protect against nuclease-mediated degradation is through the use of mirror-image, …

Application Of Quantum Mechanical Techniques To Optical Waveguide Structures, Stuart Ward Aug 2023

Application Of Quantum Mechanical Techniques To Optical Waveguide Structures, Stuart Ward

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The focus of this dissertation is on the application of supersymmetric quantum mechanics to the problem of microbending in optical waveguides and on the analysis of soliton decay due solely to quantum mechanical effects.

The techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics are applied to the equation of motion describing light propagation in an optical waveguide which is undergoing microbending. Based on these supersymmetric techniques, given a particular refractive index profile, one may derive a new refractive index profile which results in less loss due to the microbending -- the particular example of the monomial index profile is analyzed in detail. An …

Near- And Far- Field Optical Response Of Ensembles Of Nanostructures, Lauren Zundel

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The ability of metallic nanostructures to support collective oscillations of their conduction electrons, known as surface plasmons, makes them attractive candidates for a wide range of applications in areas as diverse as cancer therapy, biosensing, and solar energy harvesting. These applications are especially promising for periodic arrays of nanostructures, which can support collective modes known as lattice resonances, and for nanostructures with extreme aspect ratios that give rise to enhanced light-matter interaction. In this Thesis, we employ a coupled dipole model to theoretically explore the lattice resonances supported by complex arrays of nanoparticles containing multiple nanoparticles per unit cell. We …

High-Power Laser Cooling And Temperature-Dependent Fluorescence Studies Of Ytterbium Doped Silica, Brian Topper

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Experimental observation of optical refrigeration using ytterbium doped silica glass in recent years has created a new solution for heat mitigation in high-power laser systems, nonlinear fiber experiments, integrated photonics, and precision metrology. Current efforts of different groups focus on compositional optimization, fiber fabrication, and investigating how much silica can be cooled with a laser. At the start of this work, the best effort in laser cooling ytterbium doped silica saw cooling by 6 K from room temperature. This dissertation follows the experimental efforts that culminated in the increase of this initial record by one order of magnitude. Comprehensive spectroscopic …

Super-Resolution Microscopy With Color Centers In Diamond, Forrest A. Hubert

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

This dissertation explores the development and application of diamond color centers, specifically the silicon-vacancy (SiV) and nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, in super-resolution microscopy and magnetic imaging techniques. It demonstrates the potential of SiV centers as photostable fluorophores in stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy, with a resolution of approximately 90 nm. The research also presents a method for nanoscale magnetic microscopy using NV centers by combining charge state depletion (CSD) microscopy with optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) to image magnetic fields produced by 30 nm iron-oxide nanoparticles. The individual magnetic feature width reaches ~100 nm while resolving magnetic field patterns from nanoparticles …

A Dft Analysis And Simple Hamiltonian Modeling Of A Molecular System Employed For Experimental Evidence Of Quantum Teleportation, Pedro Ulises Medina Gonzalez Aug 2023

A Dft Analysis And Simple Hamiltonian Modeling Of A Molecular System Employed For Experimental Evidence Of Quantum Teleportation, Pedro Ulises Medina Gonzalez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Radical ion pairs (RIPs) have been used to demonstrate quantum teleportation in molecular systems for applications in quantum information science. Covalent organic donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules can produce RIPs through photo-induced charge transfer and an additional radical (R) molecule makes quantum teleportation possible. We present the electronic structure and analyze charge transfer excited states of a recently studied [1] D-A-R molecular system using density functional theory. The distances between donor-acceptor and donor-radical are about 12.9 \AA $\,$ and 21.9 \AA, respectively. The excitation energies are calculated using the perturbative delta-SCF method and agree with other conventional excited-state methods and experimental reference …

Search For Higgs Boson Pair Production In The Multiple Lepton Final State Using Proton-Proton Collision Data At √S =13 Tev From The Atlas Detector, Santosh Parajuli

Physics Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a search is presented for the production of Higgs boson pairs in final states containing three light leptons (e/mu). The analysis utilizes data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider from proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb-1. The investigation aims to identify any significant deviations from the expected background levels defined by the Standard Model. The Higgs boson, as the cornerstone of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, plays a crucial role in our understanding of particle physics. Studying the production of Higgs …

Study Of Radiation Effects In Gan-Based Devices, Han Gao Jul 2023

Study Of Radiation Effects In Gan-Based Devices, Han Gao

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Radiation tolerance of wide-bandgap Gallium Nitride (GaN) high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMT) has been studied, including X-ray-induced TID effects, heavy-ion-induced single event effects, and neutron-induced single event effects. Threshold voltage shift is observed in X-ray irradiation experiments, which recovers over time, indicating no permanent damage formed inside the device. Heavy-ion radiation effects in GaN HEMTs have been studied as a function of bias voltage, ion LET, radiation flux, and total fluence. A statistically significant amount of heavy-ion-induced gate dielectric degradation was observed, which consisted of hard breakdown and soft breakdown. Specific critical injection level experiments were designed and carried out to explore …

Effects Of Basin-Scale Climate Modes And Upwelling On Nearshore Marine Heatwaves And Cold Spells In The California Current, Michael Dalsin, Ryan K. Walter, Piero L. F. Mazzini

Physics

Marine heatwaves and cold spells (MHWs/MCSs) have been observed to be increasing globally in frequency and intensity based on satellite remote sensing and continue to pose a major threat to marine ecosystems worldwide. Despite this, there are limited in-situ based observational studies in the very shallow nearshore region, particularly in Eastern Boundary Current Upwelling Systems (EBUS). We analyzed a unique dataset collected in shallow waters along central California spanning more than four decades (1978–2020) and assessed links with basin-scale climate modes [Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and El Niño (MEI)] and regional-scale wind-driven upwelling. We found no significant increase/decrease in MHW/MCS …

Quantum Reality With Negative-Mass Particles, Mordecai Waegell, Eliahu Cohen, Avshalom C. Elitzur, Jeff Tollaksen, Yakir Aharonov

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Physical interpretations of the time-symmetric formulation of quantum mechanics, due to Aharonov, Bergmann, and Lebowitz are discussed in terms of weak values. The most direct, yet somewhat naive, interpretation uses the time-symmetric formulation to assign eigenvalues to unmeasured observables of a system, which results in logical paradoxes, and no clear physical picture. A top–down ontological model is introduced that treats the weak values of observables as physically real during the time between pre- and post-selection (PPS), which avoids these paradoxes. The generally delocalized rank-1 projectors of a quantum system describe its fundamental ontological elements, and the highest-rank projectors corresponding to …

Conservation Laws And The Foundations Of Quantum Mechanics, Yakir Aharonov, Sandu Popescu, Daniel Rohrlich

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In a recent paper, [Y. Aharonov, S. Popescu, D. Rohrlich, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A.118 e1921529118 (2021)], it was argued that while the standard definition of conservation laws in quantum mechanics, which is of a statistical character, is perfectly valid, it misses essential features of nature and it can and must be revisited to address the issue of conservation/nonconservation in individual cases. Specifically, in the above paper, an experiment was presented in which it can be proven that in some individual cases, energy is not conserved, despite being conserved statistically. It was felt however that this is worrisome and …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

In this study, we present a complete set of electron scattering cross-sections from 1-Methyl-5- Nitroimidazole (1M5NI) molecules for impact energies ranging from 0.1 to 1000 eV. This information is relevant to evaluate the potential role of 1M5NI as a molecular radiosensitizers. The total electron scattering cross-sections (TCS) that we previously measured with a magnetically confined electron transmission apparatus were considered as the reference values for the present analysis. Elastic scattering cross-sections were calculated by means of two different schemes: The Schwinger multichannel (SMC) method for the lower energies (below 15 eV) and the independent atom model-based screening-corrected additivity rule with …

Molybdenum Disulfide (Mos₂) As A Nanocellulose Substrate, Mariana Torres, Dylan Seiffert, Elise Hong-Miller, T. E. Kidd

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Cellulose is a substance abundant in nature, found in fruits and vegetables, plant cell walls (National Center for Biotechnology Information, 2023), and wood (Sjostrom, 1993). The abundance of cellulose is attributable to its linear chemical structure, as it is composed of long strands of glucose molecules linked together by hydrogen atoms, which enable the substance to withstand significant pressure without breaking (Rongpipi et al., 2019). This property—known as high tensile strength—is joined by its non-toxicity and sustainability, given cellulose may be degraded and renewed naturally (Kaur, 2021). These various properties indicate versatility, and its resultant current and desired uses—such as …

Flow Through Processing Of Nanocellulose For Space Exploration Applications, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd Jul 2023

Flow Through Processing Of Nanocellulose For Space Exploration Applications, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Nanocellulose is synthesized from cellulose, which is the most abundant organic molecule found in nature. Nanocellulose solids are biodegradable and have a strength-to-weight ratio eight times that of steel1. The production of nanocellulose solids is challenging due to the large volume loss that occurs during the curing process as well as the time and cost associated with ultrasonic processing. The loss of volume during curing often results in cracking and deformation of the cured solid. The issues caused by the large volume loss can be mitigated using additives that do not compromise the strength, shape, or machineability of …

Impacts And Applications Of Vegetable Glycerin On Nanocellulose, Elise Hong-Miller, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd Jul 2023

Impacts And Applications Of Vegetable Glycerin On Nanocellulose, Elise Hong-Miller, Dylan Seiffert, T. E. Kidd

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Nanocellulose is created by breaking down cellulose, the most common organic molecule found in nature. Nanocellulose has attractive properties, such as a very high strength-to-weight ratio, for many different applications. A major challenge is that nanocellulose has a very high shrinkage % (~90%) when it is dried, as well as a strong probability to crack. Different additives can be added in varying amounts to either mitigate or intensify these aspects, as well as affect its drying conditions. This investigation is helping the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Army to find a use for this highly renewable …

Investigation Of A Magnet Falling Through A Copper Pipe, Brianna Williams, Paul M. Shand Jul 2023

Investigation Of A Magnet Falling Through A Copper Pipe, Brianna Williams, Paul M. Shand

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

  • The goal of this research is to explore the effects of wall thickness and temperature on the rate at which a magnet falls through a copper pipe.
  • A magnet is not attracted to copper. Copper is not magnetic; however, it is a great conductor of electricity.
  • Due to Faraday’s law and Lenz’s law, we know that a changing magnetic flux will produce an electric current that opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it. These laws together explain why a magnet will fall slowly in a copper pipe even though it is not attracted.

Watermark Hiding In Hdr Image Based On Visual Saliency And Tucker Decomposition, Roa'a M. Al-Airaji, Ibtisam A. Aljazaery, Haider Th. Salim Alrikabi Jul 2023

Watermark Hiding In Hdr Image Based On Visual Saliency And Tucker Decomposition, Roa'a M. Al-Airaji, Ibtisam A. Aljazaery, Haider Th. Salim Alrikabi

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Recently, great attention has been paid to high dynamic range (HDR) images because of their richly detailed and high dynamic range of intensity. The need for pre-processing of the HDR image format with tone mapping (TM) operators makes it unique; the TM operators are provided on display with a low dynamic range (LDR). On the other hand, TM can be regarded as an inevitable attack when protecting HDR image ownership is considered. An adaptive approach for concealing watermarks based on visual saliency and Tucker decomposition has been presented in this article. In the first step, three feature maps were produced …

Propagation Of Spatiotemporal Optical Vortex Beams In Linear, Second-Order Dispersive Media, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Miguel A. Porras Jul 2023

Propagation Of Spatiotemporal Optical Vortex Beams In Linear, Second-Order Dispersive Media, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Miguel A. Porras

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the behaviors of spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) beams propagating in linear dispersive media. Starting with the Fresnel diffraction integral, we derive a closed-form expression for the STOV field at any propagation distance z in a general second-order dispersive medium. We compare our general result to special cases published in the literature and examine the characteristics of higher-order STOV beams propagating in dispersive materials by varying parameters of the medium and source-plane STOV field. We validate our analysis by comparing theoretical predictions to numerical computations of a higher-order STOV beam propagating through fused silica, where we …

Quantum Stirling Heat Engine Operating In Finite Time, Debmalya Das, George Thomas, Andrew N. Jordan Jul 2023

Quantum Stirling Heat Engine Operating In Finite Time, Debmalya Das, George Thomas, Andrew N. Jordan

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In a quantum Stirling heat engine, the heat exchanged with two thermal baths is partly utilized for performing work by redistributing the energy levels of the working substance. We analyze the thermodynamics of a quantum Stirling engine operating in finite time. We develop a model in which a time-dependent potential barrier changes the energy-level structure of the working substance. The process takes place under a constant interaction with the thermal bath. We further show that in the limit of slow operation of the cycle and low temperature, the efficiency of such an engine approaches Carnot efficiency. We also show that …

Search For Nonresonant Pair Production Of Highly Energetic Higgs Bosons Decaying To Bottom Quarks, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson (H) pair production via gluon and vector boson (V) fusion is performed in the four-bottom-quark final state, using proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV corresponding to 138 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis targets Lorentz-boosted H pairs identified using a graph neural network. It constrains the strengths relative to the standard model of the H self-coupling and the quartic VVHH couplings, κ2V, excluding κ2V = 0 for the first time, with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations when other H couplings …
