Next-Generation High-Performance Virtual Reality And Augmented Reality Light Engines, Zhiyong Yang

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

The immersive virtual reality (VR) and the optical see-through augmented reality (AR) are expected to revolutionize human lives in work, education, entertainment, healthcare, spatial computing, and digital twins, just to name a few. Next-generation VR/AR devices should exhibit a wide field-of-view (FoV), crisp image without screen-door effect, high dynamic range, compact form factor and lightweight, and low power consumption. Such demanding requirements pose a significant challenge to traditional direct-view display panels. To address these technical challenges, novel approaches need to be proposed. This dissertation is devoted to developing next-generation high-performance display light engines toward high resolution density, high optical efficiency, …

Probing The Ising Model’S Thermodynamics Through Restricted Boltzmann Machines, Xiaobei (Emma) Zhang Jan 2024

Probing The Ising Model’S Thermodynamics Through Restricted Boltzmann Machines, Xiaobei (Emma) Zhang

HMC Senior Theses

This thesis explores the connection between physics and machine learning by using Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBMs) to study the thermodynamic properties of the Ising model. The Ising model is a simple but realistic model that captures the magnetic behavior of a system, where spins occupy a lattice of sites and different spin configurations correspond to different energies. The model exhibits phase transitions between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases as a function of temperature. RBMs are two-layered neural networks that can learn probability distributions over binary spins. The study generates 2D Ising model data at different temperatures using Monte Carlo simulations, including …

X-ray reverberation mapping is a powerful technique for probing the innermost accretion disk, whereas continuum reverberation mapping in the UV, optical, and infrared (UVOIR) reveals reprocessing by the rest of the accretion disk and broad-line region (BLR). We present the time lags of Mrk 817 as a function of temporal frequency measured from 14 months of high-cadence monitoring from Swift and ground-based telescopes, in addition to an XMM-Newton observation, as part of the AGN STORM 2 campaign. The XMM-Newton lags reveal the first detection of a soft lag in this source, consistent with reverberation from the innermost accretion flow. These …

An intensive reverberation mapping campaign of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope revealed significant variations in the response of broad UV emission lines to fluctuations in the continuum emission. The response of the prominent UV emission lines changes over an ∼60 day duration, resulting in distinctly different time lags in the various segments of the light curve over the 14 month observing campaign. One-dimensional echo-mapping models fit these variations if a slowly varying background is included for each emission line. These variations are more evident in the C IV light …

The local (z = 0.0315) active galactic nucleus (AGN) Mrk 817 was monitored over more than 500 days with space- borne and ground-based instruments as part of a large international campaign, AGN STORM 2. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the broadband continuum variations using detailed modeling of the broad line region (BLR), several types of disk winds classified by their optical depth, and new numerical simulations. We find that diffuse continuum (DC) emission, with additional contributions from strong and broad emission lines, can explain the continuum lags observed in this source during high- and low-luminosity phases. Disk illumination …

Detailed Report On The Measurement Of The Positive Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment To 0.20 Ppm, Muon G − 2 Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, aμ=(gμ-2)/2. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses 3.1 GeV/c polarized muons stored in a 7.1-m-radius storage ring with a 1.45 T uniform magnetic field. The value of aμ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using nuclear magnetic resonance. The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, …

Observation Of Strong Nuclear Suppression In Exclusive J/Ψ Photoproduction In Au + Au Ultraperipheral Collisions At Rhic, Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report a measurement of exclusive J/ψ and ψ(2s) photoproduction in Au+Au ultraperipheral collisions at sNN=200 GeV using the STAR detector. For the first time, (i) the ψ(2s) photoproduction in midrapidity at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider has been experimentally measured; (ii) nuclear suppression factors are measured for both the coherent and incoherent J/ψ production. At average photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 25.0 GeV, the coherent and incoherent J/ψ cross sections of Au nuclei are found to be 71±10% and 36±7%, respectively, of that of free protons. The stronger suppression observed in the incoherent production provides a new experimental handle to study …

Strangeness Production In √Snn = 3 Gev Au+Au Collisions At Rhic, The Star Collaboration

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report multi-differential measurements of strange hadron production ranging from mid- to target-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at a center-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of √sNN = 3 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. K0 S meson and Λ hyperon yields are measured via their weak decay channels. Collision centrality and rapidity dependences of the transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios are presented. Particle mass and centrality dependence of the average transverse momenta of Λ and K0 S are compared with other strange particles, providing evidence of the development of hadronic rescattering in such collisions. The 4π yields of each …

We present the progress made in the last decade toward a deep understanding of both the fundamental structure of the sub-atomic matter of nucleon and nucleus in cold QCD, and the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions. We identify key questions of QCD research and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions in the near future, hence defining priorities of our research over the coming …

Numerical Black Hole Solutions For A Timelike Bumblebee Field, Azadé Modaressi Jan 2024

Numerical Black Hole Solutions For A Timelike Bumblebee Field, Azadé Modaressi

Physics, Astronomy and Geophysics Honors Papers

This work builds on a paper by Casana et al. [1], in which they calculated an exact, spherically symmetric solution to the Einstein equations in the presence of a bumblebee vector field. We extend their solutions by introducing a timelike component to the vector field. We are able to obtain series solutions to the Einstein equation in the presence of this field. We then demonstrate that these solutions recover flat spacetime. Our results cast doubt on the physical viability of this model, but a more thorough proof is required.

Single photon avalanche diode technology is growing and expanding at an upward progression in our society. These devices play a pivotal role in defense, communication, and space-borne applications, specifically in NASA and DoD related missions. Unlike a typical photodetector, single photon avalanche diodes are highly sensitive devices that can detect down to a single photon. There are many factors within the fabrication process of these detectors to consider in order to produce the most effective outcome. Some of these factors include compactability and size, materials available, as well as potential limitations including environment, cost, and temperature. This paper will outline …

Simulation Of Wave Propagation In Granular Particles Using A Discrete Element Model, Syed Tahmid Hussan Jan 2024

Simulation Of Wave Propagation In Granular Particles Using A Discrete Element Model, Syed Tahmid Hussan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The understanding of Bender Element mechanism and utilization of Particle Flow Code (PFC) to simulate the seismic wave behavior is important to test the dynamic behavior of soil particles. Both discrete and finite element methods can be used to simulate wave behavior. However, Discrete Element Method (DEM) is mostly suitable, as the micro scaled soil particle cannot be fully considered as continuous specimen like a piece of rod or aluminum. Recently DEM has been widely used to study mechanical properties of soils at particle level considering the particles as balls. This study represents a comparative analysis of Voigt and Best …

Telemedicine has the potential to improve access and delivery of healthcare to diverse and aging populations. Recent advances in technology allow for remote monitoring of physiological measures such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood glucose, and blood pressure. However, the ability to accurately detect falls and monitor physical activity remotely without invading privacy or remembering to wear a costly device remains an ongoing concern. Our proposed system utilizes a millimeter-wave (mmwave) radar sensor (IWR6843ISK-ODS) connected to an NVIDIA Jetson Nano board for continuous monitoring of human activity. We developed a PointNet neural network for real-time human activity monitoring that can …

Exponential Fusion Of Interpolated Frames Network (Efif-Net): Advancing Multi-Frame Image Super-Resolution With Convolutional Neural Networks, Hamed Elwarfalli, Dylan Flaute, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become instrumental in advancing multi-frame image super-resolution (SR), a technique that merges multiple low-resolution images of the same scene into a high-resolution image. In this paper, a novel deep learning multi-frame SR algorithm is introduced. The proposed CNN model, named Exponential Fusion of Interpolated Frames Network (EFIF-Net), seamlessly integrates fusion and restoration within an end-to-end network. Key features of the new EFIF-Net include a custom exponentially weighted fusion (EWF) layer for image fusion and a modification of the Residual Channel Attention Network for restoration to deblur the fused image. Input frames are registered with subpixel …

Improving The Accuracy And Practicality Of Patient-Specific Dosimetry In 177lu Radiopharmaceutical Therapies, Avery Britvec Peterson Jan 2024

Improving The Accuracy And Practicality Of Patient-Specific Dosimetry In 177lu Radiopharmaceutical Therapies, Avery Britvec Peterson

Wayne State University Dissertations

Radiopharmaceutical therapies (RPTs) have their roots in the initial discoveries of radiation and radiotherapy at the turn of the 20th century, but recent interest in the 177Lu- based RPTs 177Lu-DOTATATE and 177Lu-PSMA-617 have highlighted the need to investigate patient-specific, dosimetry-guided approaches to planning these therapies. These RPTs are currently administered in “one-size-fits-all” regimens of fixed activity injections and current dosimetry methodologies often have large uncertainties and are reliant upon reference values that do not necessarily apply to all patients. In this work, several ways to make patient-specific dosimetry in 177Lu-DOTATATE and 177Lu-PSMA- 617 RPTs more accurate or more accessible are …

Jets And Underlying Event In √S_Nn = 200 Gev P+Au Collisions At Rhic, Veronica Verkest

Wayne State University Dissertations

Small collision systems, such as that between a proton or deuteron and a heavy-ion, were originally studied to assess cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects but have produced surprising results at RHIC and the LHC over the last several years. Namely, observations of jet yield suppression (enhancement) in central (peripheral) p/d+A events have motivated further investigations into small systems, including the search for signs of Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) formation. This thesis focuses primarily on an analysis of correlations of hard and soft particle production in √s_NN = 200 GeV p+Au collisions in STAR. Jets and Underlying Event (UE) are measured at …

Dark matter is still one of the greatest unsolved enigmas of modern science. There is a wealth of evidence for dark matter, yet the detection and the fundamental properties of dark matter particles, which make up about 86% of the mass of our Universe, are still elusive. Direct detection experiments probe the interactions between the dark matter particles and some target nuclei inside particle detectors in a low background environment. LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a direct detection dark matter experiment located at the 4850 ft. level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, United States. The LZ experiment …

Investigation Of Charge Density Waves And Layer Stacking In Niobium Ditelluride, Gavin J. Smith Jan 2024

Investigation Of Charge Density Waves And Layer Stacking In Niobium Ditelluride, Gavin J. Smith

Honors Theses and Capstones

NbTe2 is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide which exhibits charge density waves (CDWs) and superconductivity in the bulk. Previous scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy experiments suggested that Fermi-surface nesting and reciprocal lattice reconstruction are important in the formation of CDWs in NbTe2. These experiments focused on spectroscopy of pristine regions. We will present low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments examining the 3x1 CDW in NbTe2 at 10K. We found a crystalline step and multiple neighboring 60º and 120º CDW domain boundaries. We examined the electronic structure across these domain boundaries and in neighboring domains using scanning …

Cataloging And Locating Icequakes On The Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica To Determine Long Term Rift Behavior, Simon F. Eisl

Honors Theses and Capstones

This report provides an introduction to the ARROW project and seismic behavior on ice shelves. We catalogged icequakes using seismic analysis code (SAC) and located prominent icequakes using WAVES from a seismic dataset collected from December 2nd, 2023 and January 5th, 2024. The analysis of this dataset will be used to model similar deformation systems found in icy ocean worlds in the outer Solar System like the Tiger Stripe rifts found on Enceladus. We looked into the deformation of rift zone WR4, why and how these icequakes occur along WR4, and the rift's interior material make up. Particular hotspots of …

Existence Of Well-Defined Pointer Observable Selects Tensor Product Factorizations Of Quantum Systems, Brian Lee Jan 2024

Existence Of Well-Defined Pointer Observable Selects Tensor Product Factorizations Of Quantum Systems, Brian Lee

CMC Senior Theses

In the decoherence account of quantum mechanics, a choice of particular tensor product structure (a particular partition of system into subsystems) is assumed. We explore whether it is possible to relax this arbitrary choice by requiring that a valid tensor product structure admits a quasi-classical description. Such tensor product structures are said to be quasi-classical or decoherence-selected tensor product structures. This project generalizes a 2-qubit quasi-classical tensor product structure selection algorithm to an n-qubit selection algorithm, which allows us to, for the first time, consider the relationship between decoherence-selected tensor product structures and locality-selected tensor product structures. To generalize the …
