Factorization Of Jet Cross Sections In Heavy-Ion Collisions, Jian-Wei Qiu, Felix Ringer, Nobuo Sato, Pia Zurita
Factorization Of Jet Cross Sections In Heavy-Ion Collisions, Jian-Wei Qiu, Felix Ringer, Nobuo Sato, Pia Zurita
Physics Faculty Publications
We propose a new phenomenological approach to establish QCD factorization of jet cross sections in the heavy-ion environment. Starting from a factorization formalism in proton-proton collisions, we introduce medium modified jet functions to capture the leading interaction of jets with the hot and dense QCD medium. A global analysis using a Monte Carlo sampling approach is performed in order to reliably determine the new jet functions from the nuclear modification factor of inclusive jets at the LHC. We find that gluon jets are significantly more suppressed due to the presence of the medium than quark jets. In addition, we observe …
Bounds On Vacuum-Orthogonal Lorentz And Cpt Violation From Radiative Corrections, Brett Altschul
Bounds On Vacuum-Orthogonal Lorentz And Cpt Violation From Radiative Corrections, Brett Altschul
Faculty Publications
Certain forms of Lorentz violation in the photon sector are difficult to bound directly, since they are “vacuum orthogonal”—meaning they do not change the solutions of the equations of motion in vacuum. However, these very same terms have a unique tendency to contribute large radiative corrections to effects in other sectors. Making use of this, we set bounds on four previously unconstrained d = 5 photon operators at the 10 − 25 – 10 − 31 GeV − 1 levels.
Self-Consistent Quantum-Kinetic Theory For Interplay Between Pulsed-Laser Excitation And Nonlinear Carrier Transport In A Quantum-Wire Array, Jeremy R. Gulley, Danghong Huang
Self-Consistent Quantum-Kinetic Theory For Interplay Between Pulsed-Laser Excitation And Nonlinear Carrier Transport In A Quantum-Wire Array, Jeremy R. Gulley, Danghong Huang
Faculty Articles
We propose a self-consistent many-body theory for coupling the ultrafast dipole-transition and carrier-plasma dynamics in a linear array of quantum wires with the scattering and absorption of ultrashort laser pulses. The quantum-wire non-thermal carrier occupations are further driven by an applied DC electric field along the wires in the presence of resistive forces from intrinsic phonon and Coulomb scattering of photo-excited carriers. The same strong DC field greatly modifies the non-equilibrium properties of the induced electron-hole plasma coupled to the propagating light pulse, while the induced longitudinal polarization fields of each wire significantly alters the nonlocal optical response from neighboring …

Mechanically Scanned Interference Pattern Structured Illumination Imaging, Jarom Silver Jackson
Mechanically Scanned Interference Pattern Structured Illumination Imaging, Jarom Silver Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
A method of lensless, single pixel imaging is presented. This method, referred to as MAS-IPSII, is theoretically capable of resolutions as small as one quarter of the wavelength of the imaging light. The resolution is not limited by the aperture of any optic, making high resolutions (including subwavelength) feasible even at very large (greater than a meter) distances. Imaging requires only flat optics and a coherent source, making it a good candidate for imaging with extreme wavelengths in the UV and x-ray regimes. The method is demonstrated by the imaging of various test targets. Both real and complex imaging (i.e. …

Search For X(3872) And X(3915) Decay Into Χc1Π0 In B Decays At Belle, The Belle Collaboration, Luminda Kulasiri
Faculty Articles
We report a search for X(3872) and X (3915) in B+→χc1π0K+ decays. We set an upper limit of B(B+→X(3872)K+)×B(X(3872)→χc1π0)<8.1×10−6 and B(B+→X(3915)K+)×B(X(3915)→χc1π0)<3.8×10−5 at 90% confidence level. We also measure B(X(3872)→χc1π0)/B(X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−)<0.97 at 90% confidence level. The results reported here are obtained from 772×106 B¯B events collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider.

We present a search for gravitational waves from 221 pulsars with rotation frequencies ≳ 10 Hz. We use advanced LIGO data from its first and second observing runs spanning 2015-2017, which provides the highest-sensitivity gravitational-wave data so far obtained. In this search we target emission from both the l = m = 2 mass quadrupole mode, with a frequency at twice that of the pulsar's rotation, and the l = 2, m = 1 mode, with a frequency at the pulsar rotation frequency. The search finds no evidence for gravitational-wave emission from any pulsar at either frequency. For the l …
Multi-Wavelength Investigation Of Energy Release And Chromospheric Evaporation In Solar Flares, Viacheslav M. Sadykov
Multi-Wavelength Investigation Of Energy Release And Chromospheric Evaporation In Solar Flares, Viacheslav M. Sadykov
Dissertations
For a comprehensive understanding of the energy release and chromospheric evaporation processes in solar flares it is necessary to perform a combined multi-wavelength analysis using observations from space-based and ground-based observatories, and compare the results with predictions of the radiative hydrodynamic (RHD) flare models. Initially, the case study of spatially-resolved chromospheric evaporation properties for an M 1.0-class solar flare (SOL2014-06-12T21:12) using data form IRIS (Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph), HMI/SDO (Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory), and VIS/GST (Visible Imaging Spectrometer at Goode Solar Telescope), demonstrate a complicated nature of evaporation and its connection to the magnetic field topology. …
Rare Event Sampling In Applied Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Yiming Yu
Rare Event Sampling In Applied Stochastic Dynamical Systems, Yiming Yu
Dissertations
Predicting rare events is a challenging problem in many complex systems arising in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. Simulating rare events is often prohibitive in such systems due to their high dimensionality and the numerical cost of their simulation, yet analytical expressions for rare event probabilities are usually not available. This dissertation tackles the problem of approximation of the probability of rare catastrophic events in optical communication systems and spin-torque magnetic nanodevices. With the application of the geometric minimum action method, the probability of pulse position shifts or other parameter changes in a model of an actively mode-locked laser …

Performance Of Plastic Electron Optics Components Fabricated Using A 3d Printer, Phillip Wiebe, Peter Beierle, Hua-Chieh Shao, Bret Gergely, Anthony F. Starace, Herman Batelaan
Anthony F. Starace Publications
We show images produced by an electron beam deflector, a quadrupole lens and a einzel lens fabricated from conducting and non-conducting plastic using a 3D printer. Despite the difficulties associated with the use of plastics in vacuum, such as outgassing, poor conductivity, and print defects, the devices were used successfully in vacuum to steer, stretch and focus electron beams to millimeter diameters. Simulations indicate that much smaller focus spot sizes might be possible for such 3D-printed plastic electron lenses taking into account some possible surface defects. This work was motivated by our need to place electron optical components in difficult-to-access …
Slow Light With Interleaved P-N Junction To Enhance Performance Of Integrated Mach-Zehnder Silicon Modulators, Marco Passoni, Dario Gerace, Liam O'Faolain, Lucio Claudio Andreani
Slow Light With Interleaved P-N Junction To Enhance Performance Of Integrated Mach-Zehnder Silicon Modulators, Marco Passoni, Dario Gerace, Liam O'Faolain, Lucio Claudio Andreani
Cappa Publications
Slow light is a very important concept in nanophotonics, especially in the context of photonic crystals. In this work, we apply our previous design of band-edge slow light in silicon waveguide gratings [M. Passoni et al, Opt. Express 26, 8470 (2018)] to Mach-Zehnder modulators based on the plasma dispersion effect. The key idea is to employ an interleaved p-n junction with the same periodicity as the grating, in order to achieve optimal matching between the electromagnetic field profile and the depletion regions of the p-n junction. The resulting modulation efficiency is strongly improved as compared to common modulators based on …
Determination Of Scatter Fractions, Albedos, And Tenth Value Layers For Shielding Of Synchrotron Beamline Hutches, Bethany Lynn Broekhoven
Determination Of Scatter Fractions, Albedos, And Tenth Value Layers For Shielding Of Synchrotron Beamline Hutches, Bethany Lynn Broekhoven
LSU Master's Theses
Synchrotron facilities require substantial amounts of shielding to protect facility staff and researchers. To meet mandatory exposure limits, the traditional combination of time, distance, and shielding of the radiation source are utilized. Because of continuous 24-7 operation of most synchrotrons, time is the least useful tool. The experimental stations for synchrotron x-ray beamlines, called hutches, enforce a minimum distance from the source, but shielding provided by hutch walls is still the principal tool for a synchrotron facility. Currently there is no single resource for synchrotron beamline hutch shielding design in the literature; most hutch shielding is designed through either over-simplified …
Magnetization Dynamics In Coupled Thin Film Systems, Daniel J. Adams
Magnetization Dynamics In Coupled Thin Film Systems, Daniel J. Adams
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A study is presented detailing experimental investigations of magnetization dynamics in nanostructured systems which are coupled magnetically. This work seeks to characterize the anisotropy of such systems through experimental techniques which probe microwave resonant absorption in the materials.
A custom-built experimental setup, designed and assembled in our labs, is explained in detail. This setup allows for angular-dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements in the sample plane through vector network analyzer spectroscopy and is adaptable to two different types of coplanar waveguides. This technique has proven effective for characterization of multiple types of magnetic systems, including multilayered structures as detailed here, with …

Analytic Generalized Description Of A Perturbative Nonparaxial Elegant Laguerre-Gaussian Phasor For Ultrashort Pulses In The Time Domain, Andrew Vikartofsky, Ethan C. Jahns, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
An analytic expression for a polychromatic phasor representing an arbitrarily short elegant Laguerre-Gauss (eLG) laser pulse of any spot size and LG mode is presented in the time domain as a nonrecursive, closed-form perturbative expansion valid to any order of perturbative correction. This phasor enables the calculation of the complex electromagnetic fields for such beams without requiring the evaluation of any Fourier integrals. It is thus straightforward to implement in analytical or numerical applications involving eLG pulses.
Nonlinear Optical Studies Of Bulk And Thin Film Complex Materials, Joel E. Taylor
Nonlinear Optical Studies Of Bulk And Thin Film Complex Materials, Joel E. Taylor
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Nonlinear optical studies of bulk and thin film materials provide a vast playground for physical and dynamical characterization. In this thesis, we have implemented experimental methods to probe novel phase transitions in single crystals using rotational anisotropic second harmonic generation (RASHG) and carrier dynamics in thin films with time-resolved pump-probe reflectivity. Furthermore, a novel low temperature ultra-high vacuum system coupled to nonlinear optics has been developed to extend lab capabilities. Doping (Bi1-xSbx)2Se3 with antimony, the surface electronic reconstruction near x=80% was identified with RASHG by deviations in the six-fold and three-fold polarization anisotropic …

The Polar Mesospheric Cloud Turbulence (PMC Turbo) experiment was designed to observe and quantify the dynamics of small‐scale gravity waves (GWs) and instabilities leading to turbulence in the upper mesosphere during polar summer using instruments aboard a stratospheric balloon. The PMC Turbo scientific payload comprised seven high‐resolution cameras and a Rayleigh lidar. Overlapping wide and narrow camera field of views from the balloon altitude of ~38 km enabled resolution of features extending from ~20 m to ~100 km at the PMC layer altitude of ~82 km. The Rayleigh lidar provided profiles of temperature below the PMC altitudes and of the …

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Characterization Of Dynamics In Novel Electrochemical Materials, Christopher T. Mallia
Theses and Dissertations
As our daily use of electronics and electronic technology grows, so does the societal need for sustainable, renewable and portable electrical power. To this end, materials of interest in the electrochemical world are needed to advance the frontier of battery science and energy storage technologies so that a safer, more efficient and reliable electrical future can be realized. This work focuses on characterization of materials primarily of interest for use as electrolytes in rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs). Despite their extraordinary power, LIB application in certain fields, such as in electric vehicles, has been limited due to performance and safety concerns. …
Phantoms In Science: Nietzsche's Nonobjectivity On Planck's Quanta, Donald Richard Dickerson Iii
Phantoms In Science: Nietzsche's Nonobjectivity On Planck's Quanta, Donald Richard Dickerson Iii
Undergraduate Theses
What does Maxwell Planck's concept of phantomness suggest about the epistemological basis of science and how might a Nietzschean critique reveal solution to the weaknesses revealed? With his solution to Kirchoff's equation, Maxwell Planck launched the paradigm of quantum physics. This same solution undermined much of current understandings of science versus pseudoscience. Using Nietzsche's perspectivism and other philosophical critiques, Planck's answer to blackbody radiation is used to highlight the troubles with phantom problems in science and how to try to direct science towards a more holistic and complete scientific approach.
Exact Generalized Partition Function Of 2d Cfts At Large Central Charge, Anatoly Dymarsky, Kirill Pavlenko
Exact Generalized Partition Function Of 2d Cfts At Large Central Charge, Anatoly Dymarsky, Kirill Pavlenko
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We discuss generalized partition function of 2d CFTs on thermal cylinder decorated by higher qKdV charges. We propose that in the large central charge limit qKdV charges factorize such that generalized partition function can be rewritten in terms of auxiliary non-interacting bosons. The explicit expression for the generalized free energy is readily available in terms of the boson spectrum, which can be deduced from the conventional thermal expectation values of qKdV charges. In other words, the picture of the auxiliary non-interacting bosons allows extending thermal one-point functions to the full non-perturbative generalized partition function. We verify this conjecture for the …
Developing Nucleon Self-Energies To Generate The Ingredients For The Description Of Nuclear Reactions, Mack Charles Atkinson
Developing Nucleon Self-Energies To Generate The Ingredients For The Description Of Nuclear Reactions, Mack Charles Atkinson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The nucleon self-energies of 40Ca, 48Ca, and 208Pb are determined using anonlocal dispersive optical model (DOM). By enforcing the dispersion relationconnecting the real and imaginary part of the self-energy, both experimentalscattering data and nuclear structure data are used to constrain theseself-energies. The ability to calculate both bound and scattering statessimultaneously puts these self-energies in a unique position to consistentlydescribe exclusive knockout reactions such as (e,e'p). Using thewell-constrained self-energy describing 40Ca, the distorted-wave impulseapproximation (DWIA) description of the (e,e'p) reaction is shown to be validfor outgoing proton kinetic energies around 100 MeV. This analysis also revealsthe importance of high-energy proton reaction …
Electronic Transport Behavior Of Adatom- And Nanoparticle-Decorated Graphene, Jamie Anne Elias
Electronic Transport Behavior Of Adatom- And Nanoparticle-Decorated Graphene, Jamie Anne Elias
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
To induce a non-negligible spin-orbit coupling in monolayer graphene, for the purposes of realizing the Kane-Mele Hamiltonian, transition metal adatoms have been deposited in dilute amounts by thermal evaporation in situ while holding the device temperature near 4K. Electronic transport studies including measurements such as gate voltage dependent conductivity and mobility, weak localization, high field magnetoresistance (Shubnikov de Haas oscillations), quantum Hall, and nonlocal voltage were performed at low temperature before and after sequential evaporations. Studies of tungsten adatoms are consistent with literature regarding other metal adatoms on graphene but were unsuccessful in producing a spin-orbit signature, at least partially …
First-Principles Study Of Structural And Optical Properties Of Novel Materials, Wenshen Song
First-Principles Study Of Structural And Optical Properties Of Novel Materials, Wenshen Song
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Novel materials, including two-dimensional (2D) materials, ferroelectric materials, as well as hybrid perovskites materials, have attracted tremendous attention in recent years because of their unique structural symmetries and electronic structures. Among them, 2D materials, such as graphene, black phosphorene, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), etc., have great potentials for nanoelectronics and optical applications. Particularly, these 2D materials can sustain much larger strain than their bulk counterparts, making strain a unique and efficient tool to tune a wide range of properties of 2D structures. In the first part of this thesis, we explore how strain tunes quasiparticle energy and excitonic effects …
Modeling Mechanisms Behind Force Generation By Actin Polymerization, Seyed Fowad Motahari
Modeling Mechanisms Behind Force Generation By Actin Polymerization, Seyed Fowad Motahari
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Actin polymerization is the primary mechanism for overcoming the large turgor pressure that opposes endocytosis in yeast. While generation of pushing forces by actin polymerization is fairly well understood, it is not clear how actin polymerization produces pulling forces. In order to understand this process, it is necessary to simulate polymerization of filaments having various types of interactions with the membrane. Since existing methodologies in the literature do not treat such problems correctly, we develop a thermodynamically consistent methodology for treating polymerization of filaments having arbitrary interaction potentials with the membrane. Then I perform stochastic simulations for a system of …
Exploring Quantum Dynamics And Thermodynamics In Superconducting Qubits, Mahdi Naghiloo
Exploring Quantum Dynamics And Thermodynamics In Superconducting Qubits, Mahdi Naghiloo
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Quantum technology has been rapidly growing due to its potential revolutionary applications. In particular, superconducting qubits provide a strong light-matter interaction as required for quantum computation and in principle can be scaled up to a high level of complexity. However, obtaining the full benet of quantum mechanics in superconducting circuits requires a deep understanding of quantum physics in such systems in all aspects. One of the most crucial aspects is the concept of measurement and the dynamics of the quantum systems under the measurement process. This thesis is intended to be a pedagogical introduction to the concept of quantum measurement …
Binary Neutron Star Merger Rates. Predictions From Observations Of Dwarf Galaxies And Observable Rates With Ground-Based Gravitational-Wave Detectors, Karen Perez Sarmiento
Binary Neutron Star Merger Rates. Predictions From Observations Of Dwarf Galaxies And Observable Rates With Ground-Based Gravitational-Wave Detectors, Karen Perez Sarmiento
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
Binary Neutron Star (BNS) mergers are interesting events in the field of multi-messenger astronomy since they are sources of detectable gravitational wave signals and electromagnetic transients. Here I introduce a new method to calculate a conservative, lower-limit for the rate of BNS merger events that is proportional to the stellar mass and is based on evidence of an r-process event in the dwarf galaxy Reticulum II. Two estimates of the stellar mass in the nearby universe were made using a Schechter Mass Function and a modified version of the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog (2MASS XSC). The BNS merger event rates …

Uv Led System For Pl Measurements On Gan Samples, Dona H. Pantova
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
Gallium Nitride materials are direct bandgap semiconductors with important applications, such as in the production of light-emitting diodes and transistors. The process of photoluminescence, in which excited electron and holes emit electro-magnetic radiation when they recombine, can be used to study the structure and quality of Gallium Nitride materials. Due to the size of the bandgap in these materials (3.4eV), ultraviolet light is required to create electron-hole pairs in GaN. We designed and built a system, which uses ultraviolet light, to take measurements on GaN samples provided by a local company, Lightwave Photonics, who were interested in the quality of …

The supernova imposter Eta Carinae and its surrounding Homunculus reflection nebula have been of great interest for the last several decades. As the most massive star known in our Galaxy, this object is of particular importance in understanding high mass loss episodes and final stages in the evolution of other similarly massive stars in the later stages of their lives. Observations using the STIS CCD Instrument have been taken over the past 20 years for both the central star and the Homunculus as part of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury Program on Eta Carinae. Recent changes in …

Strategies For Determining Electron Yield Material Parameters For Spacecraft Charge Modeling, Phil Lundgreen, Jr Dennison
Conference Proceedings
Modeling of space plasma environment-induced anomalies requires knowledge of:
- Environment and impinging fluxes during spacecraft orbits, which are mission specific and can be incorporated through environmental models and databases.
- Satellite geometry and orientation in the space environment, accomplished through such charging codes as NASCAP-2K, SPENVIS, or MUSCAT.
- Materials used in spacecraft construction, from the specific spacecraft design.
- Relevant materials properties characterizing the interaction of the materials with the environment and how these properties may change with exposure to the space environment.
A reliable, comprehensive database of spacecraft materials and the characterization of those materials is being created in the form …
A Survey Of Dark Matter Candidates And Relations To Particle Physics And General Relativity, Tyler Martell
A Survey Of Dark Matter Candidates And Relations To Particle Physics And General Relativity, Tyler Martell
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Cosmological observations of certain galaxies suggest that the amount of known, measured matter accounted for by the Standard Model of Particle Physics (SM) in those systems is insufficient to account for galactic mechanics (orbital paths and velocities). These observations have led physicists to believe that either General Relativity (GR) is incomplete, or that there exist new sources of yet-to-be detected matter, that may or may not be consistent with SM, called dark matter. Neither GR nor the SM can alone be considered complete theories of the universe for GR is not quantum
mechanical and the SM does not include GR. …
On Classification Approaches For Crystallographic Symmetries Of Noisy 2d Periodic Patterns, Peter Moeck
On Classification Approaches For Crystallographic Symmetries Of Noisy 2d Periodic Patterns, Peter Moeck
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The existing types of classification approaches for the crystallographic symmetries of patterns that are more or less periodic in two dimensions (2D) are reviewed. Their relative performance is evaluated in a qualitative manner. Pseudo-symmetries of different kinds are discussed as they present severe challenges to most classification approaches when noise levels are moderate to high. The author’s information theory based approaches utilize digital images and geometric Akaike Information Criteria. They perform well in the presence of pseudo-symmetries and turn out to be the only ones that allow for fully objective (completely researcher independent) and generalized noise level dependent classifications of …
