Interplay Of Magnetism, Superconductivity, And Topological Phases Of Matter, Cody Youmans
Interplay Of Magnetism, Superconductivity, And Topological Phases Of Matter, Cody Youmans
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Multiband superconducting materials, such as iron pnictides and doped topological insulators, have shown to be particularly promising platforms for realizing unconventional electronic behavior of both fundamental and practical importance. Similarly, new innovations in the engineering of gapped topological phases, like semiconductor based Kitaev chains and topological insulator based heterostructures, have opened new directions for solid-state design. Central to much of the excitement generated by such multifaceted electronic systems is a rich interplay between various inherent structural ordering tendencies and topologically non-trivial properties.
In some classes of pnictides, spin density wave order coexists with superconductivity over a range of doping and …

We present an HI study of the galaxy group LGG 351 using Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) early science data observed with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). LGG 351 resides behind the M 83 group at a velocity range (cz) of ∼3500–4800 km s−1 within the rich Hydra-Centaurus overdensity region. We detect 40 sources with the discovery of a tidally interacting galaxy pair and two new HI sources that are not presented in previous optical catalogues. 23 out of 40 sources have new redshifts derived from the new HI data. This study is the largest …
On The Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Metals And Semiconductors, Todd A. Van Woerkom
On The Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Metals And Semiconductors, Todd A. Van Woerkom
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation covers pulsed laser ablation of Al, Si, Ti, Ge, and InSb, with pulse durations from tens of picosecond to hundreds of microseconds, fluences from ones of J/cm2 to over 10,000 J/cm2, and in ambient air and vacuum. A set of non-dimensional scaling factors was created to interpret the data relative to the laser and material parameters, and it was found that pulse durations shorter than a critical timescale formed craters much larger than the thermal diffusion length, and longer pulse durations created holes much shallower than the thermal diffusion length. Low transverse order Gaussian beams …

An angular analysis of the decay B̅ → D ∗ ℓ − v̅ ℓ , ℓ ∈ { e , μ } , is reported using the full e +e− collision data set collected by the BABAR experiment at the Υ (4S) resonance. One B meson from the Υ (4S) → B B̅ decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, which constrains the kinematics and provides a determination of the neutrino momentum vector. The kinematics of the semileptonic decay is described by the dilepton mass squared, q2 , and three …
Singlet-Doublet Dirac Dark Matter And Neutrino Masses, Diego Restrepo, Andrés Rivera, Walter Tangarife
Singlet-Doublet Dirac Dark Matter And Neutrino Masses, Diego Restrepo, Andrés Rivera, Walter Tangarife
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We examine an extension of the Standard Model that addresses the dark matter puzzle and generates Dirac neutrino masses through the radiative seesaw mechanism. The new field content includes a scalar field that plays an important role in setting the relic abundance of dark matter. We analyze the phenomenology in the light of direct, indirect, and collider searches of dark matter. In this framework, the dark matter candidate is a Dirac particle that is a mixture of new singlet-doublet fields with mass mχ01≲1.1 TeV. We find that the allowed parameter space of this model is broader than the well-known Majorana …

Yields Of Weakly Bound Light Nuclei As A Probe Of The Statistical Hadronization Model, Yiming Cai, Thomas D. Cohen, Boris A. Gelman, Yukari Yamauchi
Publications and Research
The statistical hadronization model successfully describes the yields of hadrons and light nuclei from central heavy-ion collisions over a wide range of energies. It is a simple and efficient phenomenological framework in which the relative yields for very high energy collisions are essentially determined by a single model parameter—the chemical freeze-out temperature. Recent measurements of yields of hadrons and light nuclei covering over nine orders of magnitudes from the ALICE collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider were described by the model with remarkable accuracy with a chemical freeze-out temperature of 156.5 ± 1.5 MeV. A key physical question is whether …

Physics
We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6 month reverberation mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Lyα and C iv, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original …
Probing Uncertainty Relations In Non-Commutative Space, Pritam Chattopadhyay, Ayan Mitra, Goutam Paul
Probing Uncertainty Relations In Non-Commutative Space, Pritam Chattopadhyay, Ayan Mitra, Goutam Paul
Journal Articles
In this paper, we compute uncertainty relations for non-commutative space and obtain a better lower bound than the standard one obtained from Heisenberg’s uncertainty relation. We also derive the reverse uncertainty relation for product and sum of uncertainties of two incompatible variables for one linear and another non-linear model of the harmonic oscillator. The non-linear model in non-commutating space yields two different expressions for Schrödinger and Heisenberg uncertainty relation. This distinction does not arise in commutative space, and even in the linear model of non-commutative space.
Strongly Correlated Systems Under High Magnetic Field: A Mixed Landau Levels Description For Fractional Quantum Hall Effect, Sumanta Bandyopadhyay
Strongly Correlated Systems Under High Magnetic Field: A Mixed Landau Levels Description For Fractional Quantum Hall Effect, Sumanta Bandyopadhyay
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Strong correlation among electrons under high magnetic field gives rise to an entirely new arena of emergent physics, namely fractional quantum Hall effect. Such systems have entirely different elementary degrees of freedom and generally, demand non-perturbative approaches to develop a better understanding. In the literature, there are several analytical methodologies and numerical toolkits available to study such a system. Clustering of zeros, parent Hamiltonian, off-diagonal order parameter, parton construction, matrix product states are to be named among a few of those popular methodologies in the existing literature. Most of these methods work well in the lowest Landau level or holomorphic …
Enhanced Magnetic Ordering In Sm Metal And Search For Superconductivity In Cs And Rb Under Extreme Pressure, Yuhang Deng
Enhanced Magnetic Ordering In Sm Metal And Search For Superconductivity In Cs And Rb Under Extreme Pressure, Yuhang Deng
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
At ambient pressure Sm metal orders antiferromagnetically at 106 K and 14 K. The pressure-dependence of the magnetic ordering temperature To of Sm metal was determined through four-point electrical resistivity measurements in a diamond anvil cell to pressures as high as 150 GPa. A strong increase in To with pressure is observed above 85 GPa. In this pressure range Sm ions alloyed in dilute concentration with superconducting Y exhibit giant Kondo pair breaking. Taken together, these results suggest that for pressures above 85 GPa Sm is in a highly correlated electron state, like a Kondo lattice, with an unusually high …
Polarization Division Multiplexing For Optical Data Communications, Darko Ivanovich
Polarization Division Multiplexing For Optical Data Communications, Darko Ivanovich
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Multiple parallel channels are ubiquitous in optical communications, with spatial division multiplexing (separate physical paths) and wavelength division multiplexing (separate optical wavelengths) being the most common forms. In this research work, we investigate the viability of polarization division multiplexing, the separation of distinct parallel optical communication channels through the polarization properties of light. We investigate polarization division multiplexing based optical communication systems in five distinct parts. In the first part of the work, we define a simulation model of two or more linearly polarized optical signals (at different polarization angles) that are transmitted through a common medium (e.g., air), filtered …

Correlated Sem, Fib, And Tem Studies Of Material Collected By The Nasa Stardust Spacecraft, Brendan Albert Haas
Correlated Sem, Fib, And Tem Studies Of Material Collected By The Nasa Stardust Spacecraft, Brendan Albert Haas
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to describe the study of cometary materials returned by NASA’s Stardust mission. The majority of the research presented in this thesis focuses on improving our characterization and understanding of the fine (< 1 µm) component of comet Wild 2. Investigations of the Stardust foils are conducted with correlated Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) sample preparation, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Investigations of the Stardust aerogels are conducted with plasma ashing sample preparation followed by detailed characterization of the material with TEM. Additional studies of the Stardust interstellar foils, as well as the use of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to search images of the Stardust foils for impact features, are also presented. As a part of this thesis I have developed a new technique for analyzing the Stardust aerogels through the use of plasma ashing sample preparation. This technique is an improvement upon previous attempts to separate cometary materials from the aerogel through the use of HF vapor etching. Plasma ashing allows for cometary materials trapped within the Stardust aerogels to be deposited directly onto TEM grids allowing for detailed characterization of the cometary material with minimal interference from the aerogel itself. The correlated SEM/FIB/TEM studies of the Stardust foils demonstrated here nearly double the number of Stardust craters that have been elementally and structurally characterized in scientific literature. The crater impactor residues were largely composed of combinations of silicates and iron-nickel sulfides that, following impact, rapidly quenched into amorphous melt layers. Two craters were found to contain signatures of the refractory minerals spinel and taenite, indicating a component of the Wild 2 fines originated in the inner Solar System. However, the lack of crystalline material throughout the crater residues suggests that the fine component may largely be composed of amorphous silicates that likely formed in the outer Solar System. Additionally, the submicron Stardust craters appeared enriched in volatile elements relative to CI chondrites, further suggesting that the fine component of Wild 2 originated from a reservoir that was separate from the more refractory coarse (> 1 µm) component. The Stardust aerogel samples returned carbon-rich and potential oldhamite grains. Carbon-rich materials have not been previously observed in the Stardust foils, likely due to the violent collection methods, and the result suggests the ashing technique may be used to better characterize components of the Wild 2 fines that have been difficult to investigate. The presence of oldhamite in the Stardust …
Adiabatic Dark Matter Density Cusps Around Supermassive Black Holes And Dark Matter Detection, Augusto Medeiros Da Rosa
Adiabatic Dark Matter Density Cusps Around Supermassive Black Holes And Dark Matter Detection, Augusto Medeiros Da Rosa
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The growth of a black hole surrounded by dark matter can lead to a significant enhance-ment of the dark matter density close to the hole. We investigate this effect, focusing on thephenomenologically interesting case where the black hole is supermassive and is embedded in a galactic dark matter halo, although the formalism developed does not depend on that fact.Due to the enhanced gravitational potential, the dark matter will tend to cluster around theblack hole. The precise details of this clustering will, in general, depend on the formationprocess of the black hole. However, if the black hole grows slowly with respect …

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the interaction between the electron spin and the orbital angular momentum, can unlock rich phenomena at interfaces, in particular interconverting spin and charge currents. Conventional heavy metals have been extensively explored due to their strong SOC of conduction electrons. However, spin-orbit effects in classes of materials such as epitaxial 5d-electron transition-metal complex oxides, which also host strong SOC, remain largely unreported. In addition to strong SOC, these complex oxides can also provide the additional tuning knob of epitaxy to control the electronic structure and the engineering of spin-to-charge conversion by crystalline symmetry. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature generation …

We present the analytic calculation of the Master Integrals for the two-loop, non-planar topologies that enter the calculation of the amplitude for top-quark pair hadroproduction in the quark-annihilation channel. Using the method of differential equations, we expand the integrals in powers of the dimensional regulator ε and determine the expansion coefficients in terms of generalized harmonic polylogarithms of two dimensionless variables through to weight four.
Yang-Mills Sources For Biconformal Gravity, Walter Davis Muhwezi
Yang-Mills Sources For Biconformal Gravity, Walter Davis Muhwezi
Physics Capstone Projects
We present a gauge formulation of Yang-Mills matter sources for Biconformal gravity. Biconformal gravity is a 2n-dimensional conformal gauge theory with a curvature linear action that has been shown to reproduce scale invariant general relativity on the cotangent bundle of n-dimensional space time. We present a generalization of Yang-Mills theories in biconformal space and show that the field equations with sources reduce the Yang-Mills sector to n-dimensional Yang-Mills theory in curved spacetime. We compute the restrictive conditions on the energy-momentum tensor required by the gravitational field equations.

QCD Gaussian sum rules are used to explore the vector (JPC=1−−) strangeonium hybrid interpretation of the Y(2175). Using a two-resonance model consisting of the Y(2175) and an additional resonance, we find that the relative resonance strength of the Y(2175) in the Gaussian sum rules is less than 5% that of a heavier 2.9 GeV state. This small relative strength presents a challenge to a dominantly hybrid interpretation of the Y(2175).

We present a novel method to accurately determine the flux of neutrinos and antineutrinos, one of the dominant systematic uncertainty affecting current and future long-baseline neutrino experiments, as well as precision neutrino scattering experiment. Using exclusive topologies in v(⊽)-hydrogen interactions, vµp→µpπ +, ⊽ µp → µ +pπ, and ⊽µp → µ + n with small hadronic energy, we achieve an overall accuracy on the relative fluxes better than 1% in the energy range covering most of the available flux. Since we cannot rely on simulations nor model …

A Single Fast Radio Burst Localized To A Massive Galaxy At Cosmological Distance, K. W. Bannister, A. T. Deller, C. Phillips, J.-P. Macquart, Vardha Nicola Bennert, C. D. Wilson
Physics
Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief radio emissions from distant astronomical sources. Some are known to repeat, but most are single bursts. Nonrepeating FRB observations have had insufficient positional accuracy to localize them to an individual host galaxy. We report the interferometric localization of the single-pulse FRB 180924 to a position 4 kiloparsecs from the center of a luminous galaxy at redshift 0.3214. The burst has not been observed to repeat. The properties of the burst and its host are markedly different from those of the only other accurately localized FRB source. The integrated electron column density along the line …

The increasing spatial and spectral resolution of hyperspectral imagers yields detailed spectroscopy measurements from both space-based and airborne platforms. These detailed measurements allow for material classification, with many recent advancements from the fields of machine learning and deep learning. In many scenarios, the hyperspectral image must first be corrected or compensated for atmospheric effects. Radiative Transfer (RT) computations can provide look up tables (LUTs) to support these corrections. This research investigates a dimension-reduction approach using machine learning methods to create an effective sensor-specific long-wave infrared (LWIR) RT model.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the third most important greenhouse gas (GHG) behind carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) does not add significantly to climate forcing by itself due to the low concentration in the atmosphere; however, it is one of the most powerful GHG known. Measurements of atmospheric N2O made prior to mid-1990 have larger uncertainties than later periods due to advancements made in gas chromatography (GC) methods. Few atmospheric SF6 measurements pre-1990 exist, especially in the northern hemisphere. Archived samples may be analyzed using updated …

This work studies the associated production of a top-quark pair with a W, Z, or Higgs boson at the LHC. Predictions for the total cross sections as well as for several differential distributions of the massive particles in the final state are provided. These predictions, valid for the LHC operating at 13 TeV, include without any approximation all the NLO electroweak and QCD contributions of O (αsαj+1) with i + j = 2, 3. In addition, the predictions presented here improve upon the NLO QCD results by adding the effects of soft gluon emission corrections resummed …

Massive Elementary Particles In The Standard Model And Its Supersymmetric Triplet Higgs Extension, Keping Xie
Physics Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we focus on massive elementary particles in the Standard Model and its supersymmetric triplet Higgs extension.
In the first part, we start with a review of electroweak (EW) sector in the Standard Model. Motivated by nonzero neutrino masses, we consider triplet scalars in addition to the Standard Model. The vacuum expectation values of scalar triplets are strongly constrained by the $\rho$ parameter, extracted from electroweak precision measurements. Therefore, we introduce a custodial symmetry to weaken this constraint and obtain the well-known Georgi-Machacek (GM) Model. The GM model still requires fine-tuning to satisfy the $\rho$ parameter constraint. It …

A search in the high momentum regime for new resonances, produced in association with a jet, decaying into a pair of bottom quarks is presented using an integrated luminosity of 80.5 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search was performed for low mass resonances, including the Standard Model Higgs boson and leptophobic Z' dark matter mediators, in the mass range of 100 GeV to 200 GeV. For the Standard Model Higgs boson, the observed signal strength is μH = 5.8 ± 3.1 (stat.) …

Effective Statistical Energy Function Based Protein Un/Structure Prediction, Avdesh Mishra
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Proteins are an important component of living organisms, composed of one or more polypeptide chains, each containing hundreds or even thousands of amino acids of 20 standard types. The structure of a protein from the sequence determines crucial functions of proteins such as initiating metabolic reactions, DNA replication, cell signaling, and transporting molecules. In the past, proteins were considered to always have a well-defined stable shape (structured proteins), however, it has recently been shown that there exist intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs), which lack a fixed or ordered 3D structure, have dynamic characteristics and therefore, exist in multiple states. In the original paper, a calibration error exists in the image-formation model used to analyze experimental images taken by our microscope, causing a bias in the orientation measurements in Figs. 2 and 3. The updated measurements are shown in Fig. E1. We have also updated the supplementary material for the original article to discuss the revised PSF model and estimation algorithms (supplementary material 2) and show the revised model and measurements (Figs. S1, S3, S7, S8, and S10–S13).
