The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up a new energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 9000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its instantaneous luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design value and the integrated luminosity (total number of collisions) by a factor ten. …

Understanding And Predicting Properties Of Low-Dimensional Functional Materials From First-Principles, Naseem Ud Din

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

A periodic network with uniform single metal active site, in coordination with redox-active organic ligands, is a promising class of materials for next generation single atom catalysts. Towards this quest, in this dissertation I have carried out first-principles density functional theory (DFT) based calculations of the geometrical and electronic structure and magnetic properties of several transition-metal-organic-chains (TM-C) both in gas phase as well as on Au(111) surface. Of particular interest are dipyridyltetrazine (DT), Bis-pyrimidine (BP), and 1,10-phenanthroline5,6-dione, (PDO) ligands used to design the TM-C with several single TM atoms as the coordination center. I have screened several TM atoms to …

Symmetry And High Harmonic Spectroscopy In Solids, Shima Gholam Mirzaeimoghadar Jan 2020

Symmetry And High Harmonic Spectroscopy In Solids, Shima Gholam Mirzaeimoghadar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

High harmonic generation (HHG) by intense femtosecond laser pulses has, over the last three decades, provided new coherent sources of extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray light and enabled the field of attosecond science. Furthermore, as properties of the target are encoded in the harmonic emission, high harmonic spectroscopy has allowed extraction of molecular structure and dynamics from the spectra and polarization states of harmonics generated from gas-phase molecules. HHG from solids, discovered in 2011, now promises to offer similar benefits to condensed matter physics. In this dissertation, I describe progress on two fronts: extending attosecond techniques to generate new high …

Characterization Of Retinol Stabilized In Phosphatidylcholine Vesicles With And Without Antioxidants, Yekaterina G. Chmykh, Jay Nadeau Jan 2020

Characterization Of Retinol Stabilized In Phosphatidylcholine Vesicles With And Without Antioxidants, Yekaterina G. Chmykh, Jay Nadeau

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Retinol stability has been reported to be improved by encapsulation in liposomes, both with and without cholesterol. However, this improvement is limited because of lipid peroxidation. In this study, we compare the stability of retinol in phosphatidylcholine liposomes under ultraviolet (UV) light or standard room air, with and without the addition of antioxidants. Both butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and a proprietary mix (StoppOx) improved the shelf stability from vesicles, including within the aqueous layer. Fluorescence lifetimes were equally heterogeneous. Under UV irradiation, StoppOx protected retinol for significantly longer than BHT and via different mechanisms. This suggests that natural antioxidants work well …

Modification Of The Optical Response Of Alpha Quartz Via The Deposition Of Gold Nanoparticles In Etched Ion Tracks, Maria C. Garcia Toro Jan 2020

Modification Of The Optical Response Of Alpha Quartz Via The Deposition Of Gold Nanoparticles In Etched Ion Tracks, Maria C. Garcia Toro

Doctoral Dissertations

”This study addresses the experimental methods used to develop and characterize plasmonic devices capable of modifying the optical response of alpha quartz via the deposition of gold nanoparticles in etched ion tracks. In the first part of the research, the microstructural characterization of latent and etched ion tracks produced in alpha quartz (α-SiO2) is presented. Single crystals of α-SiO2 were irradiated with two highly energetic ions to different nominal fluences. As expected, the morphology of the resulting ion tracks depends on the energy of the incident ion and their stopping powers within the target material. Subsequent chemical …

Remark On Lehnert’S Revised Quantum Electrodynamics (Rqed) As An Alternative To Francesco Celani’S Et Al. Maxwell-Clifford Equations: With An Outline Of Chiral Cosmology Model And Its Role To Cmns, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto, Yunita Umniyati

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In a recent paper published in JCMNS in 2017, Francesco Celani, Di Tommaso & Vassalo argued that Maxwell equations rewritten in Clifford algebra are sufficient to describe the electron and also ultra-dense deuterium reaction process proposed by Homlid et al. Apparently, Celani et al. believed that their Maxwell-Clifford equations are an excellent candidate to surpass both Classical Electromagnetic and Zitterbewegung QM. Meanwhile, in a series of papers, Bo Lehnert proposed a novel and revised version of Quantum Electrodynamics (RQED) based on Proca equations. Therefore, in this paper, we gave an outline of Lehnert’s RQED, as an alternative framework to Celani …

Fluorescence Microscopy With Tailored Illumination Light, Jialei Tang Jan 2020

Fluorescence Microscopy With Tailored Illumination Light, Jialei Tang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Fluorescence microscopy has long been a valuable tool for biological and medical imaging. Control of optical parameters such as the amplitude, phase, polarization and propagation angle of light gives fluorescence imaging great capabilities ranging from single molecule imaging to long-term observation of living organisms. While numerous fluorescence imaging techniques have been developed over the past decades, there is always an inevitable tradeoff among the spatial resolution, imaging speed, contrast, photodamage and the total cost when it comes to choose the appropriate microscope. A main goal of my dissertation research is to develop state-of-the-art microscope systems that exhibit unprecedented performance in …

Tensor Network States: Optimizations And Applications In Quantum Many-Body Physics And Machine Learning, Justin Reyes Jan 2020

Tensor Network States: Optimizations And Applications In Quantum Many-Body Physics And Machine Learning, Justin Reyes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Tensor network states are ubiquitous in the investigation of quantum many-body (QMB) physics. Their advantage over other state representations is evident from their reduction in the computational complexity required to obtain various quantities of interest, namely observables. Additionally, they provide a natural platform for investigating entanglement properties within a system. In this dissertation, we develop various novel algorithms and optimizations to tensor networks for the investigation of QMB systems, including classical and quantum circuits. Specifically, we study optimizations for the two-dimensional Ising model in a transverse field, we create an algorithm for the $k$-SAT problem, and we study the entanglement …

Theoretical Analysis Of The Conduction Properties Of Self Assembled Molecular Tunnel Junctions, Cameron Nickle Jan 2020

Theoretical Analysis Of The Conduction Properties Of Self Assembled Molecular Tunnel Junctions, Cameron Nickle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

As the size scale of electrical devices approach the atomic scale. Moore's law is predicted to be over for semiconductor devices. Studies into the replacement of semiconductor technology with organic devices was first predicted by Avriam and Ratner[1] in 1974. Since then significant research into molecular based organic devices has been conducted. The work presented in this dissertation explores the theoretical frameworks used to model transport through molecular junctions. We present studies which seek to garner a better understanding of the charge transport through molecular junctions and how the conduction properties can be optimized. We show that a single atom …

Double Inclusive Small-X Gluon Production And Their Azimuthal Correlations In A Biased Ensemble, Gary Kapilevich Jan 2020

Double Inclusive Small-X Gluon Production And Their Azimuthal Correlations In A Biased Ensemble, Gary Kapilevich

Publications and Research

We consider double gg → g production in the presence of a bias on the unintegrated gluon distribution of the colliding hadrons or nuclei. Such bias could be due to the selection of configurations with a greater number of gluons or higher mean transverse momentum squared or, more generally, due to a modified spectral shape of the gluon distribution in the hadrons. Hence, we consider reweighted functional averages over the stochastic ensemble of small-x gluons. We evaluate explicitly the double inclusive gluon transverse momentum spectrum in high-energy collisions, and their azimuthal correlations, for a few simple examples of biases.

On The Intermediate Long Wave Propagation For Internal Waves In The Presence Of Currents, Joseph Cullen, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2020

On The Intermediate Long Wave Propagation For Internal Waves In The Presence Of Currents, Joseph Cullen, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

A model for the wave motion of an internal wave in the presence of current in the case of intermediate long wave approximation is studied. The lower layer is considerably deeper, with a higher density than the upper layer. The flat surface approximation is assumed. The fluids are incompressible and inviscid. The model equations are obtained from the Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics in the presence of a depth-varying current. It is shown that an appropriate scaling leads to the integrable Intermediate Long Wave Equation (ILWE). Two limits of the ILWE leading to the integrable Benjamin-Ono and KdV equations are …

Ev Charging Behavior Analysis Using Hybrid Intelligence For 5g Smart Grid, Yi Shen, Wei Fang, Feng Ye, Michel Kadoch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the widespread use of electric vehicles (EV), vehicle-to-grid (V2G) has sparked considerable discussion as an energy-management technology. Due to the inherently high maneuverability of EVs, V2G systems must provide on-demand service for EVs. Therefore, in this work, we propose a hybrid computing architecture based on fog and cloud with applications in 5G-based V2G networks. This architecture allows the bi-directional flow of power and information between schedulable EVs and smart grids (SGs) to improve the quality of service and cost-effectiveness of energy service providers. However, it is very important to select …

Pulsatile Flow Through Idealized Renal Tubules: Fluid-Structure Interaction And Dynamic Pathologies, Niksa Praljak, Shawn D. Ryan, Andrew Resnick Jan 2020

Pulsatile Flow Through Idealized Renal Tubules: Fluid-Structure Interaction And Dynamic Pathologies, Niksa Praljak, Shawn D. Ryan, Andrew Resnick

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Kidney tubules are lined with flow-sensing structures, yet information about the flow itself is not easily obtained. We aim to generate a multiscale biomechanical model for analyzing fluid flow and fluid-structure interactions within an elastic kidney tubule when the driving pressure is pulsatile. We developed a two-dimensional macroscopic mathematical model of a single fluid-filled tubule corresponding to a distal nephron segment and determined both flow dynamics and wall strains over a range of driving frequencies and wall compliances using finite-element analysis. The results presented here demonstrate good agreement with available analytical solutions and form a foundation for future inclusion of …

Dispersion Management For Optical Parametric Amplifiers In Midinfrared, Hüseyi̇n Çankaya Jan 2020

Dispersion Management For Optical Parametric Amplifiers In Midinfrared, Hüseyi̇n Çankaya

Turkish Journal of Physics

Midinfrared (MIR) is an attractive spectral region for many applications ranging from vibrational spectroscopy to attosecond physics. However, in this spectral region, the dispersion management techniques are not as mature as the ones in the near-infrared (NIR) or visible, which is a key ingredient of ultrafast laser technology. In this manuscript, thetransferofdispersionmanagementschemesforopticalparametric(chirpedpulse)amplifiers(OP(CP)As) from NIR to MIR is discussed. Among those, a scheme based on Martinez-type grating stretcher and a bulk compressor is proposed and numerically analyzed. As a case study, the proposed scheme is applied numerically to a 2-µm pumped two-stageopticalparametricamplifier(OPA)systemat4.06µm. Glaciernet: A Deep-Learning Approach For Debris-Covered Glacier Mapping, Zhiyuan Xie, Umesh K. Haritashya, Vijayan K. Asari, Brennan W. Young, Michael P. Bishop, Jeffrey S. Kargel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Rising global temperatures over the past decades is directly affecting glacier dynamics. To understand glacier fluctuations and document regional glacier-state trends, glacier-boundary detection is necessary. Debris-covered glacier (DCG) mapping, however, is notoriously difficult using conventional geospatial technology methods. Therefore, in this research for automated DCG mapping, we evaluate the utility of a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is a deep learning feed-forward neural network. The CNN inputs include Landsat satellite images, an Advanced Land Observation Satellite (ALOS) digital elevation model (DEM) and DEM-derived land-surface parameters. Our CNN based deep-learning approach named GlacierNet was designed by appropriately choosing the type, number …

Mitosisnet: End-To-End Mitotic Cell Detection By Multi-Task Learning, Md Zahangir Alom, Theus Aspiras, Tarek M. Taha, Tj Bowen, Vijayan K. Asari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Mitotic cell detection is one of the challenging problems in the field of computational pathology. Currently, mitotic cell detection and counting are one of the strongest prognostic markers for breast cancer diagnosis. The clinical visual inspection on histology slides is tedious, error prone, and time consuming for the pathologist. Thus, automatic mitotic cell detection approaches are highly demanded in clinical practice. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end multi-task learning system for mitosis detection from pathological images which is named"MitosisNet". MitosisNet consist of segmentation, detection, and classification models where the segmentation, and detection models are used for mitosis reference region …

Magnetism In Γ-Fesi2 Nanostructures: A First Principles Study, Sahil Dhoka Jan 2020

Magnetism In Γ-Fesi2 Nanostructures: A First Principles Study, Sahil Dhoka

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

First-principles calculations are performed on γ-FeSi2 nanostructures grown on Si (111) and (001) substrate. An attempt to explain the origin of emergent magnetic properties of the metastable gamma phase of iron di-silicide (γ-FeSi2) is made, which show ferromagnetic behavior on nanoscale, unlike its possible bulk form. Many papers try to explain this magnetism from factors like bulk, epitaxial strain, interface, surface, edges, and corners but doesn’t provide an analytical study for these explanations. Density functional theory is used to analyze the magnetic effects of these factors. The results for the epitaxial structures show no magnetic behavior for …

Magnetoquasistatic Resonances Of Small Dielectric Objects, Carlo Forestiere, Giovanni Miano, Guglielmo Rubinacci, Mariano Pascale, Antonello Tamburrino, Antonello Tamburrino, Roberto Tricarico, Salvatore Ventre

Advanced Science Research Center

A small dielectric object with positive permittivity may resonate when the free-space wavelength is large in comparison with the object dimensions if the permittivity is sufficiently high. We show that these resonances are described by the magnetoquasistatic approximation of the Maxwell's equations in which the normal component of the displacement current density field vanishes on the surface of the particle. They are associated to values of permittivities and frequencies for which source-free quasistatic magnetic fields exist, which are connected to the eigenvalues of a magnetostatic integral operator. We present the general physical properties of magnetoquasistatic resonances in dielectrics with arbitrary …

Polaritons – coupled excitations of photons and dipolar matter excitations – can propagate along anisotropic metasurfaces with either hyperbolic or elliptical dispersion. At the transition from hyperbolic to elliptical dispersion (corresponding to a topological transition), various intriguing phenomena are found, such as an enhancement of the photonic density of states, polariton canalization and hyperlensing. Here, we investigate theoretically and experimentally the topological transition, the polaritonic coupling and the strong nonlocal response in a uniaxial infrared-phononic metasurface, a grating of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoribbons. By hyperspectral infrared nanoimaging, we observe a synthetic transverse optical phonon resonance (strong collective near-field coupling …

Understanding the atomistic origin of defects in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, their impact on the electronic properties, and how to control them is critical for future electronics and optoelectronics. Here, we demonstrate the integration of thermochemical scanning probe lithography (tc-SPL) with a flow-through reactive gas cell to achieve nanoscale control of defects in monolayer MoS2. The tc-SPL produced defects can present either p- or n-type doping on demand, depending on the used gasses, allowing the realization of field effect transistors, and p-n junctions with precise sub-μm spatial control, and a rectification ratio of over 104. Advanced Science Research Center

The compression of extended, coded sequences allows for laser ranging measurements with low peak power levels. Previous realizations of this approach were restricted by additive noise of direct, incoherent detection. In this work we bring together pulse sequence coding and optical coherent detection to achieve very high sensitivity. Collected sequences with an overall energy equivalent to only 800 photons are successfully compressed. The observed sensitivity agrees with analytic predictions. Compared with incoherent detection, measurement durations are reduced by four orders of magnitude. The protocol is suitable for laser ranging over tens of kilometers, depending on atmospheric conditions.

A Molecular Dynamics Study Of Temperature Dependent Wetting In Alkane-Water Systems, Pauf Neupane

Doctoral Dissertations

“The wetting behavior of aqueous organic systems is of great importance in several environmental and industrial processes such as the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosols, crude oil recovery from an oil field, onsite cleaning of natural gas, and clean-up of oil spills. In this work, we employed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the temperature dependent wetting behavior of octane and nonane on water in planar interfaces as well as in nanodroplets using PYS alkane and SPC/E and TIP4P/2005 water models.

For planar interfaces, we found unusual wetting behavior of octane and nonane on SPC/E water, but generally not …

Iterative Optical Diffraction Tomography For Reconstruction Of Multiply-Scattering Objects, Shengli Fan Jan 2020

Iterative Optical Diffraction Tomography For Reconstruction Of Multiply-Scattering Objects, Shengli Fan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

As a label-free, non-destructive, high-resolution, and quantitative imaging technique, optical diffraction tomography (ODT) has been widely used to image biological samples and microstructures, such as cells, tissues, and optical fibers. The refractive-index (RI) distribution of an object is reconstructed from multi-view measurements of diffracted fields emerging from the object. Typical ODT setups include the object rotating configuration (ORC) and the illumination scanning configuration (ISC). One major limitation of ODT is that it is only applicable to weakly-scattering objects. In this dissertation, novel methods have been developed to overcome the reconstruction difficulty caused by multiple scattering, so as to extend ODT …

Parallelized X-Ray Tracing With Gpu Ray-Tracing Engine, Joseph Ulseth Jan 2020

Parallelized X-Ray Tracing With Gpu Ray-Tracing Engine, Joseph Ulseth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

X-ray diffraction tomography (XDT) is used to probe material composition of objects, providing improved contrast between materials compared to conventional transmission based computed tomography (CT). In this work, a small angle approximation to Bragg's Equation of diffraction is coupled with parallelized computing using Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to accelerate XDT simulations. The approximation gives rise to a simple yet useful proportionality between momentum transfer, radial distance of diffracted signal with respect to incoming beam's location, and depth of material, so that ray tracing may be parallelized. NVIDIA's OptiX ray-tracing engine, a parallelized pipeline for GPUs, is employed to perform XDT …

Nonlinear Optical Mechanisms In Semiconductors And Enhanced Nonlinearities At Epsilon-Near-Zero, Sepehr Ahmadzadeh Benis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Light does not interact with itself in linear optical materials. Such interactions occur only in non-linear optical (NLO) materials and typically require high intensity optical beams to be signifi-cant. The ever-increasing role of NLO, where intense light may change the properties of the me-dium, has created a pressing demand to invent materials for achieving more efficient light-light and light-matter interaction due to their potential capacity to augment and possibly replace cur-rent technologies with more efficient devices. There are numerous applications of NLO devices in fundamental science, technology, health, and defense such as all-optical computation and sig-nal processing, ultrashort laser technology, …

The Physical Properties Of Asteroids, Leos Pohl Jan 2020

The Physical Properties Of Asteroids, Leos Pohl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The Small Bodies of the Solar System are leftover material from the formation of planets. Compared with planetary bodies, they have undergone little transformation. Embedded in their physical properties, they provide clues to the conditions and processes that took place since the condensation of the Solar Nebula. Furthermore, asteroids are sources of raw materials that are becoming more costly to obtain from the interior of the Earth. The possibilities of extracting those materials has become a topic of significant interest. In this dissertation, I explore several properties of asteroid material: strength of asteroids, their shielding properties against high energetic particles …
