Applications Of The Negatively-Charged Silicon Vacancy Color Center In Diamond, Forrest A. Hubert
Applications Of The Negatively-Charged Silicon Vacancy Color Center In Diamond, Forrest A. Hubert
Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
The spatial resolution and fluorescence signal amplitude in stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy is limited by the photostability of available fluorophores. Here, we show that negatively-charged silicon vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond are promising fluorophores for STED microscopy, owing to their photostable, near-infrared emission and favorable photophysical properties. A home-built pulsed STED microscope was used to image shallow implanted SiV centers in bulk diamond at room temperature. We performed STED microscopy on isolated SiV centers and observed a lateral full-width-at-half-maximum spot size of 89 ± 2 nm, limited by the low available STED laser pulse energy (0.4 nJ). For a …

Framework For The Natures Of Negativity In Introductory Physics, Suzanne White Brahmia, Alexis Olsho, Trevor Smith, Andrew Boudreaux
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Mathematical reasoning skills are a desired outcome of many introductory physics courses, particularly calculus-based physics courses. Novices can struggle to understand the many roles signed numbers play in physics contexts, and recent evidence shows that unresolved struggle can carry over to subsequent physics courses. Positive and negative quantities are ubiquitous in physics, and the sign carries important and varied meanings. The mathematics education research literature documents the cognitive challenge of conceptualizing negative numbers as mathematical objects—both for experts, historically, and for novices as they learn. We contribute to the small but growing body of research in physics contexts that examines …

Physics 223 Poster: Hubble Law, Rebecca Alvarez
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
In this experiment, we analyzed the images and spectra of multiple galaxies and found the velocity and distance from Earth of each galaxy. Plotting the velocity against distance, we found a value for the Hubble constant using the slope of the trendline. This value was used to compute the age of the universe. Both the Hubble constant and the age of the universe were compared to the currently accepted values for consistency.
Quantum Computing And Quantum Algorithms, Daniel Serban
Quantum Computing And Quantum Algorithms, Daniel Serban
Senior Honors Theses
The field of quantum computing and quantum algorithms is studied from the ground up. Qubits and their quantum-mechanical properties are discussed, followed by how they are transformed by quantum gates. From there, quantum algorithms are explored as well as the use of high-level quantum programming languages to implement them. One quantum algorithm is selected to be implemented in the Qiskit quantum programming language. The validity and success of the resulting computation is proven with matrix multiplication of the qubits and quantum gates involved.
Determing The Chaotic Nature Of Periodic Orbits, Bo Johnson
Determing The Chaotic Nature Of Periodic Orbits, Bo Johnson
Physics Capstone Projects
The determination of the long-term behavior of periodic orbits is considered. Different numerical techniques, including the Lyapunov Exponent, the Smaller Alignment Index, and the Generalized Alignment Index are used. Because of the discontinuous nature of the system under consideration, these methods are found to be insufficient and a more simplistic approach is utilized. The simplistic approach determines long-term behavior up to 500 periods of an orbit. It is found that in-phase periodic modes result in the largest amount of stable modes. Future work will look at the common characteristics of the in-phase modes to better understand why they are more …
An Analysis Of The Debate Over Creation, Evolution, And The Timeline Of The Universe At An Ecumenical Christian University, Mason Pohlman
An Analysis Of The Debate Over Creation, Evolution, And The Timeline Of The Universe At An Ecumenical Christian University, Mason Pohlman
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
Throughout a significant portion of history and within modern culture, the fields of science and religion appear to be competing for the same holds in a person’s belief system. Universities are where academics and the sciences are the prevailing held truth, while in churches, the Bible reigns as supreme authority. However, in a Christian academic setting, the predominate school of thought in belief systems might turn into a little more of a melting pot. By analyzing gathered personal data (via surveys and interviews), one can begin to piece together the predominate thoughts on the apparent conflict between religion and science …
Vibration Overtone Hyperpolarizability Measured For H2, Rachel M. Ellis, David P. Shelton
Vibration Overtone Hyperpolarizability Measured For H2, Rachel M. Ellis, David P. Shelton
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
The second hyperpolarizability (γ) of the H2 molecule was measured by gas-phase electric field induced second harmonic generation at the frequencies of the one-photon resonance for the 3–0 Q(J) overtone transitions (v, J = 0, J → 3, J for J = 0, 1, 2, and 3). The magnitude of the resonant contribution to γ was measured with 2% accuracy using the previously determined non-resonant γ for calibration. Pressure broadening and frequency shift for the transitions were also measured. A theoretical expression for the resonant vibrational γ contribution in terms of transition polarizabilities is compared to the observations. The measured …

In a new paper in recent issue of this journal (PSTJ), Prof. M. Pitkanen describes a solar system model inspired by spiral galaxies. While we appreciate his new approach, we find it lacks substantial discussion on the nature of vortices and chirality in galaxy. Therefore we submit a viewpoint that Gross-Pitaevskii model can be a more complete description of both solar system and also spiral galaxies, especially taking into account the nature of chirality and vortices in galaxies. In this article, we also hope to bring out some correspondence among existing models, so we discuss shortly: the topological vortice approach, …
Accurate Tracking Of Position And Dose During Vmat Based On Vmat-Ct, Xiaodong Zhao
Accurate Tracking Of Position And Dose During Vmat Based On Vmat-Ct, Xiaodong Zhao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Purpose: Local tomography reconstruction is achievable with EPID images acquired during VMAT and was named as VMAT-CT. However, it did not gain popularity due to multiple limitations and technical challenges. The goal of this study was to extend VMAT-CT concept, generate complete 3D or 4D CT images and dose, track and adapt VMAT plan based on updated images and dose.
Methods: We considered collimator angle and removed blurred areas in EPID images for VMAT-CT reconstruction to reduce artifacts and improve image quality. VMAT-CT+ images were generated by fusing VMAT-CT and planning CT using rigid or deformable registration. For 4D SBRT …

On Characterizing Quantum Processes And Detectors, Kevin Valson Jacob
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In 2009, physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Colorado, Boulder developed what could arguable be called the first rudimentary quantum computer [1]. The past decade has seen unprecedented improvements in quantum information science culminating in the demonstration of quantum supremacy --- that quantum computers can solve problems that are impractical to be solved on the best supercomputers [2]. This remarkable progress necessitates the development of techniques to characterize the quantum devices that are being developed. In my thesis, I will focus on such devices that manipulate and detect light.
In Chapter 1, I will introduce the …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Subsurface Analytics is a new technology that changes the way reservoir simulation and modeling is performed. Instead of starting with the construction of mathematical equations to model the physics of the fluid flow through porous media and then modification of the geological models in order to achieve history match, Subsurface Analytics that is a completely AI-based reservoir simulation and modeling technology takes a completely different approach. In AI-based reservoir modeling, field measurements form the foundation of the reservoir model. Using data-driven, pattern recognition technologies; the physics of the fluid flow through porous media is modeled through discovering the best, most …

Growth And Characterization Of 2d Layered Materials, Algene Fryer Ii
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
2D layered materials are becoming an important area of research due to their exceptional electrical and optical properties. Specifically, 2D layered monochalcogenides are known for their high carrier motilities, whereas layered metal halides have been shown to have noteworthy photoresponsivity. Despite the assortment of 2D layered materials, the search for reliable and scalable synthesis methods is still a challenge in this family of materials. Often a certain growth technique will compromise a desirable trait needed for further fabrication, such as the quality of the crystal or its coverage on a substrate. In this study, two growth techniques that incorporate changeable …
X-Ray Interferometry Without Analyzer For Breast Ct Application, A Simulation Study, Jingzhu Xu
X-Ray Interferometry Without Analyzer For Breast Ct Application, A Simulation Study, Jingzhu Xu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We investigated a novel analyzer-less X-ray interferometer with a spatially modulated phase-grating (MPG) which produces three types of images (attenuation image, phase image and scatter image) for Breast computed tomography (CT). The system provides the three complimentary X-ray images with the goals of limiting the dose to the object and achieving similar attenuation image sensitivity as a standard absorption-only Breast CT. The MPG system features an X-ray source, a source-grating, a single phase-grating, and a detector. No analyzer grating is necessary, compared to other geometries such as Talbot-Lau X-ray interferometry (TLXI). Thus, there is a ~2 times improvement in X-ray …

The core part of the program system COLUMBUS allows highly efficient calculations using variational multireference (MR) methods in the framework of configuration interaction with single and double excitations (MR-CISD) and averaged quadratic coupled-cluster calcu- lations (MR-AQCC), based on uncontracted sets of configurations and the graphical unitary group approach (GUGA). The availability of analytic MR-CISD and MR-AQCC energy gradients and analytic nonadiabatic couplings for MR-CISD enables exciting applications including, e.g., investigations of π-conjugated biradicaloid compounds, calculations of multitudes of excited states, development of dia- batization procedures, and furnishing the electronic structure information for on-the-fly surface nonadiabatic dynamics. With fully vari- ational …

Superconductivity In Compression-Shear Deformed Diamond, Chang Liu, Xianqi Song, Quan Li, Yanming Ma, Changfeng Chen
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
Diamond is a prototypical ultrawide band gap semiconductor, but turns into a superconductor with a critical temperature Tc≈4 K near 3% boron doping [E. A. Ekimov et al., Nature (London) 428, 542 (2004)]. Here we unveil a surprising new route to superconductivity in undoped diamond by compression-shear deformation that induces increasing metallization and lattice softening with rising strain, producing phonon mediated Tc up to 2.4–12.4 K for a wide range of Coulomb pseudopotential μ∗=0.15–0.05. This finding raises intriguing prospects of generating robust superconductivity in strained diamond crystal, showcasing a distinct and hitherto little explored approach to driving materials into superconducting …

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z'. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z' e+e−→μ+μ−Z′ and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z' in e+e−→e±μ∓Z′. We do not find any excess of events and set 90% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ−L …
Evaluation Of Neutron Skyshine Contributions During Injection At An Electron Synchrotron Facility Using Fluka, Andrew D. Hastings
Evaluation Of Neutron Skyshine Contributions During Injection At An Electron Synchrotron Facility Using Fluka, Andrew D. Hastings
LSU Master's Theses
The Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) is a 1.5 giga-electron volt (GeV) electron synchrotron research facility under the jurisdiction of Louisiana State University (LSU). When originally constructed in 1992, CAMD was surrounded by pasture and woodland. Over the past several years, urban development of the area has found CAMD bracketed by a shopping center, apartment complex, and business offices. These developments raised concerns amongst the CAMD radiation safety personnel regarding an increased potential for public exposure to radiation. To ensure compliance with the annual public effective dose equivalent limit of 1 milli-sievert (mSv), the radiation monitoring program was …

Monitoring And Identifying The Rhodamine 6g-Hydroxide Ion Reaction Using In-Situ, Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Ryan Lamb
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An effective method for monitoring chemical reactions is necessary to better understand their mechanisms and kinetics. Effective reaction monitoring requires a spectroscopy technique with fast data acquisition, high sensitivity, structure-to-spectrum correlation, and low solvent interference. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) provides these features, which makes it a valuable tool for monitoring reactions. To obtain the Raman enhancement, metallic nanostructures typically made of silver or gold are aggregated using a salt. The nanoparticles aggregates must then be stabilized using a surfactant to use this method in situ due to eventual nanoparticle precipitation. In this study, gold nanoparticles stabilized with sodium dodecyl sulfate …

Volcanic eruptions can cause significant socioeconomic loss, but a better understanding of the processes and dynamics influencing the evolution of volcanic plumbing systems will advance the development of eruption forecasting models that will ultimately mitigate hazards and risks associated with eruptive events. Geologic and geophysical data must be integrated in 3D, finite- element, multiphysical, numerical models to define the coupled evolution of magmatic and crustal stress regimes in volcanic environments, but in data limited regions this is not always an option. The remote nature of the Aleutian Island Arc restricts ground-based monitoring and sampling efforts, and due to sparse temporal …

Probing The Interstellar Medium Of Galaxies Using Gravitationally Lensed Sight Lines And The Relevant Atomic Physics, Frances Cashman
Theses and Dissertations
Absorption spectroscopy of gravitationally lensed quasars (GLQs) enables study of spatial variations in the interstellar and/or circumgalactic medium (ISM, CGM) of foreground galaxies. In this work I present observations of 4 GLQs, each with two images separated by 0.8-3.000, that show strong absorbers at redshifts 0.4 abs< 1.3 in their spectra, including some at the lens redshift. The H I Lyman lines were measured in five absorbers using HST-STIS, and metal lines with either the MagE spectrograph or the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These data, combined with the literature, show no strong correlation between absolute values of differences in NH I, NFe II, or [Fe/H] and sight line separations at absorber redshifts. The measured abundance gradients show a tentative anti-correlation with abundances at galaxy centers.
A study of the lens galaxy foreground to the doubly lensed quasar SBS 0909+532 reveals a large difference in H I and metal column densities between sight lines. Using archival HST-STIS and Keck HIRES spectra, log N H I 18.18 cm−2 and log N H I = 20.38±0.02 cm−2were measured, resulting …

Variational hybrid quantum-classical algorithms (VHQCAs) are near-term algorithms that leverage classical optimization to minimize a cost function, which is efficiently evaluated on a quantum computer. Recently VHQCAs have been proposed for quantum compiling, where a target unitary U is compiled into a short-depth gate sequence V. In this work, we report on a surprising form of noise resilience for these algorithms. Namely, we find one often learns the correct gate sequence V (i.e. the correct variational parameters) despite various sources of incoherent noise acting during the cost-evaluation circuit. Our main results are rigorous theorems stating that the optimal variational parameters …
Heavy Quark Expansion For Heavy-Light Light-Cone Operators, Shuai Zhao
Heavy Quark Expansion For Heavy-Light Light-Cone Operators, Shuai Zhao
Physics Faculty Publications
We generalize the celebrated heavy quark expansion to nonlocal QCD operators. By taking nonlocal heavy-light current on the light-cone as an example, we confirm that the collinear singularities are common between QCD operator and the corresponding operator in heavy quark effective theory (HQET), at the leading power of 1/M expansion. Based on a perturbative calculation in operator form at one-loop level, a factorization formula linking QCD and HQET operators is investigated and the matching coefficient is determined. The matching between QCD and HQET light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) as well as other momentum distributions of hadron can be derived as …

Measurement Of Angular Correlation Of Two Protons In Quasielastic Neutrino-Nucleus Cross-Section, Matthieu Chalifour , '20
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
We search in the MINERvA scintillator detector for multiple proton emission in quasielastic like charged current neutrino scattering. The number of such observable events in MINERvA is predicted to be far greater than currently available samples. We measure the total number of such events, and study the distribution of laboratory frame angles between the multiple protons and the muon, which is sensitive to the production mechanism for such events. We find significant disagreement of signal events between data and Monte-Carlo simulation.
