Voltage-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy In Antiferromagnetic Mgo-Capped Mnpt Films, P. H. Chang, Wuzhang Fang, T. Ozaki, Kirill Belashchenko May 2021

Voltage-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy In Antiferromagnetic Mgo-Capped Mnpt Films, P. H. Chang, Wuzhang Fang, T. Ozaki, Kirill Belashchenko

Kirill Belashchenko Publications

The magnetic anisotropy in MgO-capped MnPt films and its voltage control are studied using first-principles calculations. Sharp variation of the magnetic anisotropy with film thickness, especially in the Pt-terminated film, suggests that it may be widely tuned by adjusting the film thickness. In thick films the linear voltage control coefficient is as large as 1.5 and -0.6 pJ/Vm for Pt-terminated and Mn-terminated interfaces, respectively. The combination of a widely tunable magnetic anisotropy energy and a large voltage-control coefficient suggest that MgO-capped MnPt films can serve as a versatile platform for magnetic memory and antiferromagnonic applications.

Fuzzy Techniques, Laplace Indeterminacy Principle, And Maximum Entropy Approach Explain Lindy Effect And Help Avoid Meaningless Infinities In Physics, Julio C. Urenda, Sean R. Aguilar, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, the only information that we have about some quantity S is a lower bound T ≤ S. In such a situation, what is a reasonable estimate for S? For example, we know that a company has survived for T years, and based on this information, we want to predict for how long it will continue surviving. At first glance, this is a type of a problem to which we can apply the usual fuzzy methodology -- but unfortunately, a straightforward use of this methodology leads to a counter-intuitive infinite estimate for S. There is an empirical …

Cholesterol And Cholesterol Bilayer Domains Inhibit Binding Of Alpha-Crystallin To The Membranes Made Of The Major Phospholipids Of Eye Lens Fiber Cell Plasma Membranes, Raju Timsina, Geraline Trossi-Torres, Matthew O'Dell, Nawal K. Khadka, Laxman Mainali

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The concentration of α-crystallin decreases in the eye lens cytoplasm, with a corresponding increase in membrane-bound α-crystallin during cataract formation. The eye lens’s fiber cell plasma membrane consists of extremely high cholesterol (Chol) content, forming cholesterol bilayer domains (CBDs) within the membrane. The role of high Chol content in the lens membrane is unclear. Here, we applied the continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance spin-labeling method to probe the role of Chol and CBDs on α-crystallin binding to membranes made of four major phospholipids (PLs) of the eye lens, i.e., phosphatidylcholine (PC), sphingomyelin (SM), phosphatidylserine (PS), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). Small unilamellar vesicles …

Developing Electron Beam Lithography At Nanoscale Device Laboratory, Din Pašić May 2021

Developing Electron Beam Lithography At Nanoscale Device Laboratory, Din Pašić

Physics Capstone Projects

At the Nanoscale Device Laboratory, we can routinely create patterns with a minimum linewidth of 800 nm using photolithography. However, to create photonic devices, the pattern size must be smaller than the wavelength of visible light (400 to 800 nm). Dedicated electron beam writers can achieve a sub-10 nm linewidth, but this system is beyond our reach. In this project, we plan to use a Nanometer Pattern Generation System connected to a Quanta 650 scanning electron microscope to perform e-beam lithography. After setting up a computer to run the NPGS system, and establishing communications with the SEM, we experimented with …

A Careful Reassessment Of Globular Cluster Multiple Population Radial Distributions With Sloan Digital Sky Survey And Johnson-Cousins Broadband Photometry, Willem B. Hoogendam, Jason P. Smolinski May 2021

A Careful Reassessment Of Globular Cluster Multiple Population Radial Distributions With Sloan Digital Sky Survey And Johnson-Cousins Broadband Photometry, Willem B. Hoogendam, Jason P. Smolinski

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Inconsistencies regarding the nature of globular cluster (GC) multiple population radial distributions is a matter for concern given their role in testing or validating cluster dynamical evolution modeling. In this study, we present a reanalysis of eight GC radial distributions using publicly available ground-based ugriz and UBVRI photometry; correcting for a systematic error identified in the literature. We detail the need for including and considering not only Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) probabilities but critical K-S statistic values as well when drawing conclusions from radial distributions, as well as the impact of sample incompleteness. Revised cumulative radial distributions are presented, and the literature …

Designing Cryogenic Strain Device For 2d Materials, Jake Carter

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Churchill lab working within the Physics Department at the University of Arkansas is working to create important quantum states including weak topological insulators (TIs) through the use of symmetry engineering and topological electronic states in two-dimensional (2D) crystals of WHM materials. Experimental results of these topological states have been obstructed due to the difficulty to perform controlled in situ strain. This project strives to create a mount to utilize a piezoelectric nanopositioner within cryostats achieving an in situ strain that creates the quantum states the lab is looking to observe. This report also examines the necessary equations to determine …

The Physics Of Nanoaperture Optical Traps: Design, Fabrication And Experimentation, Chenyi Zhang May 2021

The Physics Of Nanoaperture Optical Traps: Design, Fabrication And Experimentation, Chenyi Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Recent progress in nano optics, spurred by progress in nanofabrication, has allowed us to overcome these challenges. We use surface plasmon polaritons to break the optical diffraction limit and squeeze the photon energy into a local hot spot. The small mode volume of a plasmonic antenna or nanoaperature significantly enhances the local field and can be designed to resonate at a desired wavelength. By designing, fabricating, and testing these nanoapertures, I trap single nanoparticles with significantly reduced laser power by measuring the monochromatic transmission change of a resonant aperture. A freely diffused nanoparticle, behaving like a dipole antenna, interacts with …

Measuring The Night Sky Brightness Of Butler University, Austin Thomas Jacks

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Light pollution has had a significant impact on ground-based telescope observations in recent years. As the night sky brightness continues to increase, astronomers are looking for new ways to combat this growing problem. According to the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), “An important part of solving the problem of light pollution is to have a thorough understanding of its magnitude, and a great way to do that is to measure the brightness of the night sky” [1]. The night sky brightness of surrounding Butler University is measured using the Holcomb Observatory 0.95-meter Cassegrain telescope. Different types of filters were used …

Analysis Of Waveform Distortions Produced By Interferometer Response Functions For Future Searches Of Gravitational-Wave Signals From Core-Collapse Supernovae, Anton Gribovskiy

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Multi-messenger astronomy recently added a fundamentally new component to its wide array of observational tools: a gravitational-wave detector. A number of binary black holes mergers have already been detected by gravitational-wave interferometers and the data have been analyzed by the scientific community. Moreover, simultaneous observation of gravitational waves with electromagnetic signals led to the first observation of a binary neutron star merger. Success in gravitational-wave detection motivated the efforts to improve current detectors and initiated the design of future detectors with significantly enhanced sensitivities. The detector improvements will lead to increase of the detection range for binary star mergers and …

Design And Control Of A Peristaltic Pump To Simulate Left Atrial Pressure In A Conductive Silicone Model, Jeremy Collins May 2021

Design And Control Of A Peristaltic Pump To Simulate Left Atrial Pressure In A Conductive Silicone Model, Jeremy Collins

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

According to the CDC, atrial fibrillation is responsible for more than 454,000 hospitalizations and approximately 158,000 deaths per year. A common treatment for atrial fibrillation is catheter ablation, a process in which a long flexible tube is guided through the femoral artery and to the source of arrhythmia in the heart, where it measures the electrical potential at various locations and converts problematic heart tissue to scar tissue via ablation. This paper details the design and control of a low-cost ($400) peristaltic pump system using repetitive control to replicate blood pressure in the left atrium in a conductive silicone model …

A Fully-Automated, Deep Learning-Based Framework For Ct-Based Localization, Segmentation, Verification And Planning Of Metastatic Vertebrae, Tucker Netherton, Tucker James Netherton

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Palliative radiotherapy is an effective treatment for the palliation of symptoms caused by vertebral metastases. Visible evidence of disease is localized on medical images as part of the treatment planning process. However, complicating factors such as time pressures, anatomic variants in the spine, and similarities in adjacent vertebrae are associated with wrong level treatments of the spine. In addition, erroneous manual contouring of anatomic structures is a major failure mode in radiotherapy treatment planning.

The purpose of this study is to mitigate the challenges associated with treatment planning of the spine by automating the treatment planning process for three-dimensional conformal …

Learning The Chain Fountain In Steady State Motion, Mark Ddamulira May 2021

Learning The Chain Fountain In Steady State Motion, Mark Ddamulira

Honor’s College Freeman Research Journal

A chain of metallic balls or spheres leaps over and above the rim of a container in which it rests tracing a path like a fountain when one end of the chain is given a push towards the ground. This interesting phenomenon was discovered by Steve Mould to describe at atomic level what happens to the molecules in a self-siphoning fluid. However, to his surprise, the chain of beads did not flow over the rim of the container as the self-siphoning fluid did.

But why does this chain do this and what forces cause this fountain? Propositions for the origin …

Measurement Of The Top Quark Mass Using Leptonic Observables In Tt Events Produced In Pp Collisions At Sqrt S = 13 Tev With The Cms Experiment At The Lhc, Mark Douglas Saunders

Theses and Dissertations

A novel method is presented for the measurement of the top-quark mass using only leptonic observables in tt events produced in pp collisions at SQRT(s)= 13 TeV.Data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1, were collected with the CMS detector during LHC Run II in 2016. The measurement uses the top-quark mass dependence of multiple kinematic distributions comprised from the dilepton eμ final state of tt events. The top-quark mass dependence of each kinematic distribution is calibrated using events generated with a NLO Monte Carlo simulation, and for the first time, with a second simulation that includes the exact …

Memory Module Design For High-Temperature Applications In Sic Cmos Technology, Affan Abbasi May 2021

Memory Module Design For High-Temperature Applications In Sic Cmos Technology, Affan Abbasi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The wide bandgap (WBG) characteristics of SiC play a significant and disruptive role in the power electronics industry. The same characteristics make this material a viable choice for high-temperature electronics systems. Leveraging the high-temperature capability of SiC is crucial to automotive, space exploration, aerospace, deep well drilling, and gas turbines. A significant issue with the high-temperature operation is the exponential increase in leakage current. The lower intrinsic carrier concentration of SiC (10-9 cm-3) compared to Si (1010 cm-3) leads to lower leakage over temperature. Several researchers have demonstrated analog and digital circuits designed in SiC. However, a memory module is …

Quantum Dynamical Phenomena In Non-Hermitian And Magnomechanical Systems, Saeid Vashahri Ghamsari May 2021

Quantum Dynamical Phenomena In Non-Hermitian And Magnomechanical Systems, Saeid Vashahri Ghamsari

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we have investigated quantum dynamics via three case studies. First, we studied a system of two coupled waveguides respectively carrying optical damping and optical gain in addition to squeezing elements in one or both waveguides. Such a system is expected to generate highly entangled light fields in the two waveguides. We, however, show that the degree of the created entanglement is significantly affected by the quantum noises associated with the amplification and dissipation. Because of the noise effect, one can only have nonzero entanglement for a limited time interval. Second, we generalized the first project by considering …

Conventional measurement technology is unable to extract the most amount of information possible from coherent states of light. Non-Gaussian measurements which can count individual photons can surpass the sensitivity limits of ideal conventional strategies, and approach the ultimate limits achievable given by quantum mechanics. This thesis presents investigations and demonstrations of these unconventional measurements, which utilize coherent operations and single photon counting. This thesis shows that non-Gaussian measurements can outperform conventional strategies in estimation tasks as well as a variety of communication problems. This thesis also investigates novel approaches and algorithms for building robustness to static and dynamic noise which …

Point Absorbers In Advanced Ligo, Aidan F. Brooks, Gabriele Vajente, Hiro Yamamoto, R. Abbott, C. Adams, R. Adhikari, A. Ananyeva, S. Appert, K. Arai, Karla E. Ramirez

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Small, highly absorbing points are randomly present on the surfaces of the main interferometer optics in Advanced LIGO. The resulting nanometer scale thermo-elastic deformations and substrate lenses from these micronscale absorbers significantly reduce the sensitivity of the interferometer directly though a reduction in the power-recycling gain and indirect interactions with the feedback control system. We review the expected surface deformation from point absorbers and provide a pedagogical description of the impact on power buildup in second generation gravitational wave detectors (dual-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers). This analysis predicts that the power-dependent reduction in interferometer performance will significantly degrade maximum stored power …

Two Developments For Efficient And Accurate Density Functional Theory Calculations, Zachary John Buschmann May 2021

Two Developments For Efficient And Accurate Density Functional Theory Calculations, Zachary John Buschmann

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Density functional theory (DFT) has long been the workhorse of quantum chemists and materials scientists. As the ability of modern DFT codes to address larger and more complex molecular systems has grown, so too has the computational cost, with cutting edge simulations requiring thousands of hours of wall time on the worldâ??s fastest supercomputers. For this reason, efficiency in both memory and time is critical at every step of the process. In fact, the increasing scope of physical systems that can be modeled is as much a function of computational elegance as of the physical fidelity of the simulation. The continuing …

Machine Learning Optimizes A Survey Of Dark Energy, Steven Karst Apr 2021

Machine Learning Optimizes A Survey Of Dark Energy, Steven Karst

Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T

Measuring the history of cosmic expansion via the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) scale from a three-dimensional galaxy map is a well established technique to probe the nature of dark energy. In fact, a forthcoming galaxy redshift survey, the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS), is designed mainly for this purpose. An essential optimization problem in such galaxy redshift surveys is the target selection. Namely, it is not clear how we should select our targets to maximize the number of galaxies which provide successful redshift measurement in a desired cosmic epoch, while avoiding other galaxies. Taking PFS as an example, we apply …

The purpose of this project was to study the open star cluster NGC2204 using images taken at Kitt Peak National Observatory using the WIYN 0.9m telescope. These images were analyzed photometrically with the intention of determining the reddening, metallicity, age, and distance modulus of the star cluster. Each image was analyzed using software that determined the point spread function and applied that function to determine the magnitude of each star in that image. These magnitudes were taken for each filter, UBVRI, and then combined and averaged to create a single catalog. Standard stars, taken on the same night, were used …

Single-Neutron States In 51ti Via Neutron Transfer Reaction To 50ti, Jessica Nebel-Crosson Apr 2021

Single-Neutron States In 51ti Via Neutron Transfer Reaction To 50ti, Jessica Nebel-Crosson

Physics and Astronomy Honors Papers

My project clarifies previous measurements made for the high excitation states of titanium isotopes, specifically 51Ti. We used a single-neutron transfer reaction from a deuterium source and measured the energy difference between the initial energy of the deuterium source, the transferred neutron, and the free proton. Our analysis included creating angular distribution plots of the proton momentum and the loose assignments of the single-particle state nature for each excitation state. We took these measurements via the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph at Florida State University.
