Improved Out-Of-Plane Brdf Measurement And Modeling, Todd V. Small Sep 2021

Improved Out-Of-Plane Brdf Measurement And Modeling, Todd V. Small

Theses and Dissertations

The bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) describes the directional (spatial) nature of light’s reflectance from a material surface. When incident light of a particular wavelength strikes a material surface from a particular direction, portions of that incident light will be reflected into various directions in various amounts, depending on the material’s surface characteristics. Historically, the vast majority of BRDF measurement and modeling research has focused on reflection within the plane-of incidence (in-plane) and dealt primarily with simplified isotropic BRDFs. Remote sensing applications, such as satellite light curve analysis, typically rely on closed-form microfacet models for efficiency. There are many factors, …

Improvements To Emissive Plume And Shock Wave Diagnostics And Interpretation During Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Graphite, Timothy I. Calver

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation covers nanosecond pulsed laser ablation of graphite for 4-5.7 J/cm2 fluences with 248 nm and 532 nm lasers in 1-180 Torr helium, argon, nitrogen, air, and mixed gas. Three experiments were performed to improve the interpretation of common diagnostics used to characterize pulsed laser ablation, find simple but universal scaling relationships for comparing dynamics across different materials and ablation conditions, and provide a systematic analysis of graphite emissive plume and shock wave dynamics. A scaling of the Sedov-Taylor energy ratio was developed and validated for a range of studies despite differences in wavelength, pulse duration, fluence, and …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assemblies In Nature And Nanotechnology, Phu Khanh Tang Sep 2021

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assemblies In Nature And Nanotechnology, Phu Khanh Tang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Nature usually divides complex systems into smaller building blocks specializing in a few tasks since one entity cannot achieve everything. Therefore, self-assembly is a robust tool exploited by Nature to build hierarchical systems that accomplish unique functions. The cell membrane distinguishes itself as an example of Nature’s self-assembly, defining and protecting the cell. By mimicking Nature’s designs using synthetically designed self-assemblies, researchers with advanced nanotechnological comprehension can manipulate these synthetic self-assemblies to improve many aspects of modern medicine and materials science. Understanding the competing underlying molecular interactions in self-assembly is always of interest to the academic scientific community and industry. …

Linear And Non Linear Properties Of Two-Dimensional Exciton-Polaritons, Mandeep Khatoniar

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Technology has been accelerating at breakneck speed since the first quantum revolution, an era that ushered transistors and lasers in the late 1940s and early 1960s. Both of these technologies relied on a matured understanding of quantum theories and since their inception has propelled innovation and development in various sectors like communications, metrology, and sensing. Optical technologies were thought to be the game changers in terms of logic and computing operations, with the elevator pitch being "computing at speed of light", a fundamental speed limit imposed by this universe’s legal system (a.k.a physics). However, it was soon realized that that …

Neutron Energy Tuning Assemblies For Nuclear Weapon Environment Applications At The National Ignition Facility, Nicholas J. Quartemont Sep 2021

Neutron Energy Tuning Assemblies For Nuclear Weapon Environment Applications At The National Ignition Facility, Nicholas J. Quartemont

Theses and Dissertations

An energy tuning assembly was developed to spectrally shape the National Ignition Facility deuterium-tritium fusion neutron source to a notional thermonuclear and prompt fission neutron spectrum to fulfill neutron source capability gaps. The experimental neutron environment was characterized with activation dosimetry, neutronics and covariance models, and unfolded to determine the as-fielded neutron spectrum. The first energy tuning assembly was demonstrated to create synthetic spectrally accurate post-detonation fission products, enhancing U.S. technical nuclear forensics capabilities. ATHENA, a second-generation energy tuning assembly, was also optimized to meet similar objectives, but the new platform neutron fluence efficiency was increased by a factor of …

Robert Streubel Papers

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that exhibit classical or quantum quasiparticle behavior. A substantial amount of research has occurred in this field, both because of their unique electromagnetic properties and potential application for future nonvolatile memory storage applications, as well as fundamental questions on their topology and unique magnetic phases. Here, we investigate the fluctuation properties of a magnetic Fe/Gd skyrmion lattice, using short-pulsed x rays. We first measure spontaneous fluctuations of the skyrmion lattice phase and find an inherent, collective mode showing an underdamped oscillation with a relaxation of a couple of nanoseconds. Further observations track the response …

Topological Classical Wave Systems With Modulations, Interactions, And Higher-Order Topological States, Mengyao Li

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Topological phases in classical wave systems, such as photonic and acoustic, have been actively investigated and applied for wave guiding, lasing, and numerous other novel phenomena and device applications Topological phase transitions enable robust boundary states, and the field has been broadening recently into a vast variety of systems with temporal modulations and interactions. Floquet modulation, for example, is the modulation applied periodically in time which may break symmetries and leads to novel topological phases.

Introducing non-Hermitian Floquet modulation enables more interesting phenomena including bandgap in imaginary part of the spectrum and gainy/lossy topological edge states with complex energy values. …

Developing Dynamical Probes Of Quantum Spin Liquids Inspired By Techniques From Spintronics, Joshua Aftergood Sep 2021

Developing Dynamical Probes Of Quantum Spin Liquids Inspired By Techniques From Spintronics, Joshua Aftergood

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We theoretically study low dimensional insulating spin systems using spin fluctuations as a probe of the spin dynamics. In some systems, low dimensionality in conjunction with other quantum fluctuation enhancing effects impedes spontaneous generation of long range magnetic ordering down to zero absolute temperature. In particular, we focus on exotic spin systems hosting mobile, fractionalized spin excitations above their ground state, and ultimately show that techniques already commonplace in spintronics can be utilized in the context of quantum magnetism to develop probes of exotic ground states.

We initially consider quantum spin chains (QSCs), and examine a system of two exchange-coupled …

Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics And Network Analysis Of The Gramicidin Water Channel And Proton Transfer Pathways To Qb In Photosynthetic Reaction Centers, Yingying Zhang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Water molecules play a key role in all biochemical processes. They help define the shape of proteins, and they are reactant or product in many reactions and are released as ligands are bound. They facilitate transfer of protons through transmembrane proton channel, pump and transporter proteins. Continuum electrostatics (CE) force fields such as used in MCCE (Multi-Conformation Continuum Electrostatics) capture electrostatic interactions in biomolecules with an implicit solvent, to give the averaged solvent water equilibrium properties. Hybrid CE methods can use explicit water molecules within the protein surrounded by implicit solvent. These hybrid methods permit the study of explicit hydrogen …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The method of determination of the molecular weight of the polystyrene, which is formed as the shell on the surfaces of submicron aluminum oxide particles is considered in the paper. This method is based on the sedimentation of submicron particles, covered by polymer molecules, in a solvent for polystyrene. It is shown that the average polystyrene molecular weight is 39500±11250 amu, when the polymer shells on the surfaces of submicron particles (Al2O3) are formed by the vapor-phase method.

Adaptive Reconstruction Of The Heterogeneous Scan Line Etm+ Correction Technique, Heba Kh. Abbas, Salema S. Salman, Rash Awad Abtan, Anwar H. Al-Saleh, Ali A. Al-Zuky

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

ETM+ is a land-imaging sensor with great and wide use in many fields, however, after May 2003, because of a technical defect in the sensor´s system scan line corrector SLC, it started giving images of earth containing black gap lines at a 22% rate. These gaps made the process of analyzing and extracting accurate information from these images difficult and complicated. Therefore, scientists have developed many techniques to remove the gap lines from all ETM+ band-images and complete the missing data. In this study, three different ETM+ time images with a 16-day interval between them were used to fill gap …

Analysis Of Container Throughput: Demand Forecast And Seaport Competitiveness Assessment, Hussain Talat Sulaimani

Dissertations

Seaports play a crucial role in the container industry, where they act as important nodes in the transport chain to facilitate international trade. In a competitive market, port capacity plays a significant role in defining its competitive position to attract demand and avoid congestion. Failing to provide suitable capacity results in the loss of market share. Therefore, port decision-makers face the challenge of maintaining and developing suitable port facilities to provide efficient services to port users. One of the aspects that decision-makers consider in the planning and development process is analyzing container demand. The analysis of container demand can be …

Approximate Solutions Of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Using B-Polynomial Bases, Muhammad I. Bhatti, Md. Habibur Rahman, Nicholas Dimakis Aug 2021

Approximate Solutions Of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Using B-Polynomial Bases, Muhammad I. Bhatti, Md. Habibur Rahman, Nicholas Dimakis

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A multivariable technique has been incorporated for guesstimating solutions of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (NPDE) using bases set of B-Polynomials (B-polys). To approximate the anticipated solution of the NPD equation, a linear product of variable coefficients ai(t) and Bi(x) B-polys has been employed. Additionally, the variable quantities in the anticipated solution are determined using the Galerkin method for minimizing errors. Before the minimization process is to take place, the NPDE is converted into an operational matrix equation which, when inverted, yields values of the undefined coefficients in the expected solution. The nonlinear terms of the NPDE are combined in the …

Investigation Of Environmental-Friendly, Membraneless Hydrogen Peroxide Fuel Cells, Bao Nguyen

Dissertations and Theses

Human-induced climate change is one of the biggest threats to humanity in the 21st century. This is caused by the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels is the primary cause of climate change. This problem can be addressed by replacing fossil fuels with fuel sources that have clean by-products and are cost-effective. For the last few decades, hydrogen (H2) has been extensively studied as an alternative to carbon-based fossil fuels. Currently, H2 still has many shortcomings for commercial applications. The photocatalytic production of H2 still suffers from …

Spin-Orbit Dependence Of Anisotropic Current-Induced Spin Polarization, L. L. Tao, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Aug 2021

Spin-Orbit Dependence Of Anisotropic Current-Induced Spin Polarization, L. L. Tao, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Studies of the current-induced spin polarization (CISP) have been recently reinvigorated due to the discoveries of CISP in some burgeoning materials such as oxide interfaces, van der Waals, and topological quantum materials. Here, we investigate the CISP in two-dimensional systems for different types of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) using the Boltzmann transport theory. We find an anisotropic response of CISP to the current direction which strongly depends on the type of SOC. We demonstrate that the CISP is nonlinear with respect to the SOC magnitude, depends on the Fermi energy, and exhibits two different transport regimes for low or high carrier …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The novel use of ionic liquid as a solvent for biodegradable and natural organic biomaterials has increasingly sparked interest in the biomedical field. As compared to more volatile traditional solvents that rapidly degrade the protein molecular weight, the capability of polysaccharides and proteins to dissolve seamlessly in ionic liquid and form fine and tunable biomaterials after regeneration is the key interest of this study. Here, a blended system consisting of Bombyx Mori silk fibroin protein and a cellulose derivative, cellulose acetate (CA), in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAc) was regenerated and underwent characterization to understand the structure and physical …

Interplay Of Geometry And Mechanics: Disordered Spring Networks And Shape-Changing Cerebella, Mahesh Chandrasekhar Gandikota Aug 2021

Interplay Of Geometry And Mechanics: Disordered Spring Networks And Shape-Changing Cerebella, Mahesh Chandrasekhar Gandikota

Dissertations - ALL

This thesis reports work in three topics - I) isotropic strain-induced rigidity transitions in under-constrained spring networks II) uniaxial strain-induced stiffening transitions in semiflexible networks with area-conserving inclusions and III) non-linearities in the buckling without bending morphogenesis model for growing cerebella. All models are two dimensional and we employ either discrete and continuum models to study these systems. In I), motivated by the rigidity transitions in isotropically strained disordered spring networks, we study rigidity transitions in isotropically strained area-conserving random polygonal loops. We find a crossover transition in these loops. We also provide arguments towards showing convexity as a necessary condition …

Self-Organization In Models Of Cyclically Sheared Suspensions, Jikai Wang Aug 2021

Self-Organization In Models Of Cyclically Sheared Suspensions, Jikai Wang

Dissertations - ALL

This thesis presents a study of random self-organized systems using computer-simulated models inspired by cyclically-sheared non-Brownian suspensions of monodisperse spherical particles in a density-matched fluid. When driven at low Reynolds number, such systems have vanishing thermal fluctuations and only short-range interactions between individual particles. Nevertheless, they show intriguing collective behaviors at large length scales, such as a strong suppression of fluctuations in the number density. Such self-organized "hyperuniform" states can useful in industrial applications where well-controlled states can ease the processing of such materials. In Chapter 2, we propose a new way of generating hyperuniform suspensions, by incorporating slow gravity-driven sedimentation …

Multimode Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics With Superconducting Metamaterial Resonators, . Indrajeet Aug 2021

Multimode Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics With Superconducting Metamaterial Resonators, . Indrajeet

Dissertations - ALL

Superconducting devices in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) systems are one of the leading approaches for realizing scalable quantum information processors. The combination of cQED architectures with multimode resonator systems can provide a flexible platform for performing analog quantum simulations, storing quantum information, and generating complex entangled states. Metamaterial resonant structures made from arrays of superconducting lumped circuit elements can exhibit microwave mode spectra with left-handed dispersion, resulting in a high density of modes in the same frequency range where superconducting qubits are typically operated, as well as a bandgap at lower frequencies that extends down to dc. In this thesis, …

Molecular Interfaces And Heterogeneous Bubble Nucleation From Heated Surfaces At Nanoscale, Manish Gupta Aug 2021

Molecular Interfaces And Heterogeneous Bubble Nucleation From Heated Surfaces At Nanoscale, Manish Gupta

Dissertations - ALL

Heat transfer from a solid surface to fluid occurs in numerous applications, such as boilers, refrigerators, power electronics, etc., and include various underlying phenomena of thin-film evaporation, boiling, condensation, surface wetting, and droplet evaporation. Several studies show that heat transfer can be enhanced significantly by incorporating micro and nanoscale features onto surfaces. Phase change heat transfer plays an important role in dissipating energy from hot surfaces and distributing it to bulk liquid due to high latent heat of liquids. Boiling, a phase change heat transfer phenomenon, happens when the surface is heated to a temperature above the saturation temperature of …

Electromagnetic Transitions And Beta Decays In Nuclei From The Ab Initio Symmetry-Adapted No-Core Shell Model, Grigor Sargsyan Aug 2021

Electromagnetic Transitions And Beta Decays In Nuclei From The Ab Initio Symmetry-Adapted No-Core Shell Model, Grigor Sargsyan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nuclear physics today is a diverse field, involving research that extends from the minus- cule scales of neutrons and protons to the colossal dimensions of astrophysical objects in the universe. And since the ab initio methods in nuclear physics use realistic internucleon interactions, nuclear modeling has gained predictive capabilities that enable us to probe ever more deeply into the fundamental nature of matter. One of these models – the symmetry- adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM) – is capable of reaching the medium-mass region of the chart of the nuclides, by exploiting the emergent symmetries of nuclei, and is therefore well-suited …

Wavelet Packet Power Spectrum Of The Sdss Lyman-Alpha Forest: A Tool For Large-Scale Structure Detection, Jason Pero Aug 2021

Wavelet Packet Power Spectrum Of The Sdss Lyman-Alpha Forest: A Tool For Large-Scale Structure Detection, Jason Pero

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

One of the goals of astrophysics is to obtain a full understanding how the Universe is organized on large scales and how structure evolved. In this thesis we develop a method of detecting structure on Mpc scales by measuring the one-dimensional power spectrum of the transmitted ux in the Lyman- forest. The method is based on the wavelet packet transform (WPT), which has several advantages over the Fourier transform. This includes reduced noise, resulting in less data manipulation and scrubbing in the early stages of analysis. Another advantage is localization of outliers in the data, which allows the general trend …

Long Term Variation Of Class I Methanol Masers, Nycole Wenner Aug 2021

Long Term Variation Of Class I Methanol Masers, Nycole Wenner

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Class I methanol masers in high mass star forming regions are generally found in outflows. There, shocks provide the collisional pumping that causes the population inversion necessary for maser action. Less is known about Class I methanol masers compared to Class II. A better understanding of Class I masers will allow them to be used as more effective probes of high mass star formation, about which much remains to be learned. In particular, the variability of these masers could potentially be used to investigate activity in high mass star forming regions. I present an investigation of the long-term variability of …

Re-Visiting Acoustic Sounding To Advance The Measurement Of Optical Turbulence, Steven T. Fiorino, Santasri Bose-Pillai, Kevin J. Keefer

Faculty Publications

Optical turbulence, as determined by the widely accepted practice of profiling the temperature structure constant, C2T, via the measurement of ambient atmospheric temperature gradients, can be found to differ quite significantly when characterizing such gradients via thermal-couple differential temperature sensors as compared to doing so with acoustic probes such as those commonly used in sonic anemometry. Similar inconsistencies are observed when comparing optical turbulence strength derived via C2T as compared to those through direct optical or imaging measurements of small fluctuations of the index of refraction of air (i.e., scintillation). These irregularities are especially apparent …

Dicationic Stilbazolium Salts: Structural, Thermal, Optical, And Ionic Conduction Properties, Pradip K. Bhowmik, Jung J. Koh, David King, Haesook Han, Benoît Heinrich, Bertrand Donnio, Daniel Zaton, Alfonso Martinez-Felipe

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Two series of new dicationic stilbazolium salts containing tosylate and triflimide counterions, respectively, were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. Despite of their promesogenic structures, none of these salts are mesomorphous, and instead they solely exhibit crystalline polymorphism, as deduced from differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and variable temperature X-ray measurements. These salts were also found to be highly thermally stable with decomposition temperatures occurring well above 300 °C, and up to 367 °C for the triflimide salts, as determined by thermogravimetric analysis. UV–Vis absorption and photoluminescent properties were examined in both solution and in the …

Community Detection In Complex Networks, Zhenqi Lu Aug 2021

Community Detection In Complex Networks, Zhenqi Lu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Network science plays a central role in understanding and modeling complex systems in many disciplines, including physics, sociology, biology, computer science, economics, politics, and neuroscience. By studying networks, we can gain a deep understanding of the behavior of the systems they represent. Many networks exhibit community structure, i.e., they have clusters of nodes that are locally densely interconnected. These communities manifest the hierarchical organization of the objects in systems, and detecting communities greatly facilitates the study of the organization and structure of complex systems.

Most existing community-detection methods consider low-order connection patterns, at the level of individual links. But high-order …
