Machine Learning In Analyzing Atmospheric Gravity Waves, Anastasia Brown
Machine Learning In Analyzing Atmospheric Gravity Waves, Anastasia Brown
Student Research Symposium
The ANtarctic Gravity Wave Instrument Network (ANGWIN) is an international collaboration aimed at investigating the upper atmosphere dynamics over a continent-size region, using a network of all-sky imagers. In an effort to streamline the identification of “clean” windows in the extensive database of all sky-imager data obtained since 2012, we have developed a machine learning algorithm that sorts “clean” (marked as 0) images from “obscured” (marked as 1) images. Already, we have successfully created a LightGBM (Light Gradient-Boosting Machine) model that accurately sorts through images taken at the Davis and McMurdo research stations in Antarctica. The LightGBM model for the …
Permittivity Of Thin Film Spacecraft Materials, Cameron Eggleston
Permittivity Of Thin Film Spacecraft Materials, Cameron Eggleston
Student Research Symposium
Permittivity is the ability of a material to store electrical potential energy under the influence of an electric field. This property is commonly used to determine the best insulating materials and to find the best materials for capacitors. Where my research, the permittivity of thin film space materials, is generally relevant is the realm of spacecraft charging and arcing. The permittivity of thin film space materials affects how charge builds up in the material. While taking permittivity measurements, we noticed that thinner samples were giving smaller values than they should, so we started to look closer. We developed an empirical …

E6 Models In Light Of Precision MW Measurements, Vernon Barger, Cash Hauptmann, Peisi Huang, Wai-Yee Keung
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We propose a solution to the recent W mass measurement by embedding the Standard Model within E6 models. The presence of a new U(1) group shifts the W boson mass at the tree level and introduces a new gauge boson Z' which has been searched for at collider experiments. In this article, we identify the parameter space that explains the new W mass measurement and is consistent with current experimental Z' searches. As U(1) extensions can be accommodated in supersymmetric models, we also consider the supersymmetric scenario of E6 models, and show that a 125 GeV …
Einstein-Rosen Bridge From The Minimal Length, Jonas R. Mureika, Kimet Jusufi, Emmanuel Moulay, Ahmed Farag Ali
Einstein-Rosen Bridge From The Minimal Length, Jonas R. Mureika, Kimet Jusufi, Emmanuel Moulay, Ahmed Farag Ali
Physics Faculty Works
We use a string T-duality corrected pair of regular black holes to construct an Einstein-Rosen (ER) bridge with the wormhole throat proportional to the zero-point (Planck) length. This may be a geometric realization of quantum entanglement for particle/antiparticle pairs. We point out that for an extreme mass configuration consisting of a black hole pair, one can have an ER bridge with a horizon area that coincides with the Bekenstein minimal area bound along with a wormhole mass proportional to the Planck mass. This could be related to gravitational self-completeness with quantum mechanical mass limits. We also discuss the ER bridge …

We present the highest resolution and sensitivity ∼ 1.4 GHz continuum observations of the Eridanus supergroup obtained as a part of the Widefield Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) pre-pilot observations using the ASKAP. We detect 9461 sources at 1.37 GHz down to a flux density limit of ∼ 0.1 mJy at 6.1′′×7.9′′ resolution with a median root mean square of 0.05 mJy beam −1 . We find that the flux scale is accurate to within 5 % (compared to NVSS at 1.4 GHz). We then determine the global properties of eight Eridanus supergroup …

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will undergo major upgrades to increase the instantaneous luminosity up to 5–7.5 × 1034 cm-2s-1. This High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) will deliver a total of 3000–4000 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13–14 TeV. To cope with these challenging environmental conditions, the strip tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using modules with two closely-spaced silicon sensors to provide information to include tracking in the Level-1 trigger selection. This paper describes the performance, in a test beam experiment, of the …
The Temporal Asymmetry Of Influence Is Not Statistical, Emily Adlam
The Temporal Asymmetry Of Influence Is Not Statistical, Emily Adlam
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We argue that the temporal asymmetry of influence is not merely the result of thermodynamics: it is a consequence of the fact that modal structure of the universe must admit only processes which cannot give rise to contradictions. We appeal to the process matrix formalism developed in the field of quantum foundations to characterise processes which are compatible with local free will whilst ruling out contradictions, and argue that this gives rise to ‘consistent chaining’ requirements that explain the temporal asymmetry of influence. We compare this view to the perspectival account of causation advocated by Price and Ramsey.
Analog Cosmology And Superfluidity In Atomic Gases And Electronic Materials, Anshuman Bhardwaj
Analog Cosmology And Superfluidity In Atomic Gases And Electronic Materials, Anshuman Bhardwaj
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We present a study of analog cosmological models in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and in graphene, and superfluidity in a box-shaped traps. We start by examining the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped inside an expanding toroid that can realize an analog inflationary universe. The expanding condensate forces phonons to undergo redshift and damping due to quantum pressure, owing to the thinness of the ring. We predict that such expanding BECs can exhibit spontaneous phonon creation from the vacuum state and show how it would manifest in the atom density and density correlations and discuss connections with the inflationary theory. …
Modeling Excited State Processes In Molecular Aggregates By Constructing An Adaptive Basis For The Hierarchy Of Pure States, Leonel Varvelo
Modeling Excited State Processes In Molecular Aggregates By Constructing An Adaptive Basis For The Hierarchy Of Pure States, Leonel Varvelo
Chemistry Theses and Dissertations
Simulating excitation energy transfer (EET) in molecular materials is of crucial importance for the development of and understanding of materials such as organic photovoltaics and photosynthetic systems and further development of novel materials. The Hierarchy of Pure States (HOPS) is an exact framework for the time evolution of an open quantum system in which a hierarchy of stochastic wave functions are propagated in time. The adaptive HOPS (adHOPS) method achieves size-invariant scaling with the number of simulated molecules for sufficiently large aggregates by using an adaptive basis that moves with the excitation through the material. To demonstrate the power of …

Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons, And Neutrinos (Fsnn): Whitepaper For The 2023 Nsac Long Range Plan, William D. Williams, Et Al
Physics: Faculty Publications
Through the exploration of fundamental symmetries, and by using nuclei, neutrons, and neutrinos, nuclear physics addresses some of the most profound questions in science. Why does the universe contain so much more matter than antimatter? Are neutrinos their own antiparticles and where do their masses come from? What objects make up the dark matter that is responsible for most of the universe’s mass? Does nature contain more forces than the four we know about? Our Standard Model of nature’s particles and forces is incomplete because it does not answer these questions; new physics, from beyond the Standard Model (BSM) is …
Diffractive Imaging Of Laser Induced Molecular Reactions With Kiloelectron–Volt Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, Yanwei Xiong
Diffractive Imaging Of Laser Induced Molecular Reactions With Kiloelectron–Volt Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, Yanwei Xiong
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Capturing the structural changes during a molecular reaction with ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) requires a high spatiotemporal resolution and sufficiently high signal-to-noise to record the signals with high fidelity. In this dissertation, I have focused on the development of a tabletop gas phase keV-UED setup with a femtosecond temporal resolution. A DC electron gun was employed to generate electron pulses with a high repetition rate of 5 kHz. The space charge effect in the electron pulse was ameliorated by compressing the 90 keV electron pulse longitudinally with a time varying electric field in an RF cavity. The velocity mismatch between …
Lax Integrability And Solution Methods For The Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation With External Potentials: Exact Solutions And Applications, Laila Yahya Al Sakkaf
Lax Integrability And Solution Methods For The Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation With External Potentials: Exact Solutions And Applications, Laila Yahya Al Sakkaf
Dissertations
The investigation of a nonlinear differential equation (NLDE) integrability is the foundation for understanding and predicting the behavior of systems that are governed by that NLDE. The existence of a Lax pair (LP) representation is a reliable indicator of the indicator of the integrability of an NLDE. If an NLDE admits an LP, it is considered integrable in the LP sense, and this has important implications for the behavior and solutions of the system. The LP plays a crucial role in many powerful analytical solution methods for solving NLDEs. One such method is the Darboux transformation (DT), which allows for …
A Study Of Single Molecule Detection With Graphene Hall Bars, Kenneth Stephen Stephenson
A Study Of Single Molecule Detection With Graphene Hall Bars, Kenneth Stephen Stephenson
Theses and Dissertations
In 2007, detection of individual molecules with a solid-state gas sensor was reported for first time by Schedin et al. where they used micromechanically-cleaved graphene for their sensing material, which exhibits isotropic and homogeneous conduction [1]. However, despite the novelty and popularity of their work, it has never been repeated. Further, we found their associated calculations to be self-inconsistent by a factor of 103 . So, hoping to account for and resolve this discrepancy, we outline the plan we had to reproduce their experiment. We also justify any substantial modifications, particularly our choice to use epitaxial graphene instead. Then, we …
Muon Intensity Measurement With The Majorana Demonstrator, Franklin Michael Adams Jr.
Muon Intensity Measurement With The Majorana Demonstrator, Franklin Michael Adams Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The Majorana Demonstrator (MJD) is a shielded radiation detection system located a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota. The system aims to detect the theorized, rare process of neutrinoless double-beta decay. The Demonstrator utilizes an array of scintillating acrylic detectors to veto any signals induced by earth-penetrating cosmogenic muons and reach background levels necessary for the detection of neutrinoless double-beta decay. Utilizing the data collected by the muon veto system, an analysis has been done to determine the differential muon intensity. The complex geometry of the interlacing detector panels requires the use of Monte …

The first objective of this thesis is to perform a simulation of a new mini-LEO GNSS constellation at 1000 km and assess its performance in different scenarios. The second objective is to design a signal simulator for two signals that are propriety of the Global Navigation Satellite Augmentation Systems (GNSSaS), which are the BOC(2,2) and ATLBOC(7.5, BOC(2,2)) modulation schemes. To simulate the mini-LEO GNSS constellation, two software …
Apparatus-Dependent Corrections To The Electron G-2 Revisited, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Apparatus-Dependent Corrections To The Electron G-2 Revisited, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We revisit the derivation of the apparatus-dependent correction to the energy levels of quantum cyclotron states, as previously outlined [Boulware et al., Phys. Rev. D 32, 729 (1985)PRVDAQ0556-282110.1103/PhysRevD.32.729]. We evaluate the leading corrections to the axial, magnetron, cyclotron, and spin-projection-dependent energy levels due to the altered photon field quantization in the vicinity of a conducting wall. Our work significantly extends previous considerations. Quantum cyclotron states are used for the determination of the electron g factor in Penning traps. Our calculations show that the numerically largest apparatus-dependent corrections can be expected for the axial and magnetron frequencies, where they can be …

Ferroelectric hafnia-based thin films have attracted intense attention due to their compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology. However, the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase is thermodynamically metastable. Various efforts have been made to stabilize the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase of hafnia-based films such as controlling the growth kinetics and mechanical confinement. Here, we demonstrate a key interface engineering strategy to stabilize and enhance the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase of the Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 thin film by deliberately controlling the termination of the bottom La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layer. We find that the Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films on …

We report cross-section measurements of the final-state muon kinematics for νμ charged-current interactions in the NOvA near detector using an accumulated 8.09×1020 protons on target in the NuMI beam. We present the results as a double-differential cross section in the observed outgoing muon energy and angle, as well as single-differential cross sections in the derived neutrino energy, Eν, and square of the four-momentum transfer, Q2. We compare the results to inclusive cross-section predictions from various neutrino event generators via χ2 calculations using a covariance matrix that accounts for bin-to-bin correlations of systematic uncertainties. …

We report the results of a new global QCD analysis including deep-inelastic scattering data off 1H, 2H, 3H, and 3He targets. Nuclear corrections are treated in terms of a nuclear convolution approach with off-shell bound nucleons. The off-shell (OS) corrections responsible for the modification of the structure functions (SFs) of bound nucleons are constrained in a global fit along with the proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the higher-twist (HT) terms. We investigate the proton-neutron difference for the OS correction and discuss our predictions for the SF ratio F n 2 / F p 2 and …

This article presents a model-independent search for an additional, mostly sterile, heavy neutral lepton (HNL), that is capable of mixing with the Standard Model τ neutrino with a mixing strength of |Uτ4| 2, corresponding to the absolute square of the extended Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix element. Data from the BABAR experiment, with a total integrated luminosity of 424 fb−1, are analyzed using a kinematic approach that makes no assumptions on the model behind the origins of the HNL, its lifetime or decay modes. No significant signal is found. Upper limits on |Uτ4|2 at the 95% …

The increasing miniaturization of electronics requires a better understanding of material properties at the nanoscale. Many studies have shown that there is a ferroelectric size limit in oxides, below which the ferroelectricity will be strongly suppressed due to the depolarization field, and whether such a limit still exists in the absence of the depolarization field remains unclear. Here, by applying uniaxial strain, we obtain pure in-plane polarized ferroelectricity in ultrathin SrTiO3 membranes, providing a clean system with high tunability to explore ferroelectric size effects especially the thickness-dependent ferroelectric instability with no depolarization field. Surprisingly, the domain size, ferroelectric transition …

The Crystal Structure of Hexagonal Molybdenum Oxynitride Hydride
The following thesis is a comprehensive study of the crystalline structure of a hexagonal molybdenum oxynitride hydride through the analysis of neutron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction patterns. This material is of interest for its tunable electrical, magnetic, thermal, and catalytic properties. It was hypothesized that the wet ammonolysis of a molybdenum oxide precursor could result in a hexagonal MoN phase. The composition of the powder sample was characterized using Prompt Gamma-ray Neutron Activation Analysis, Thermogravimetric Analysis, and Combustion Analysis. Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements were conducted, as they complement each other, to …
A Mathematical Framework For Operational Fine Tunings, Lorenzo Catani, Matthew Leifer
A Mathematical Framework For Operational Fine Tunings, Lorenzo Catani, Matthew Leifer
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In the framework of ontological models, the inherently nonclassical features of quantum theory always seem to involve properties that are fine tuned, i.e. properties that hold at the operational level but break at the ontological level. Their appearance at the operational level is due to unexplained special choices of the ontological parameters, which is what we mean by a fine tuning. Famous examples of such features are contextuality and nonlocality. In this article, we develop a theory-independent mathematical framework for characterizing operational fine tunings. These are distinct from causal fine tunings – already introduced by Wood and Spekkens in [NJP,17 …
