Mass Spectrum And Correlation Functions Of Non-Abelian Quantum Magnetic Monopoles, E. C. Marino, Rudnei O. Ramos Jan 1994

Mass Spectrum And Correlation Functions Of Non-Abelian Quantum Magnetic Monopoles, E. C. Marino, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

The method of quantization of magnetic monopoles based on the order-disorder duality existing between the monopole operator and the Lagrangian fields is applied to the description of the quantum magnetic monopoles of't Hooft and Polyakov in the SO(3) Georgi-Glashow model. The commutator of the monopole operator with the magnetic charge is computed explicitly, indicating that indeed the quantum monopole carries 4πg units of magnetic charge. An explicit expression for the asymptotic behavior of the monopole correlation function is derived. From this, the mass of the quantum monopole is obtained. The tree-level result for the quantum monopole mass is shown to …

Heavy Quark Solitons: Strangeness And Symmetry Breaking, Joseph Schechter, Arshad Momen, Anand Subbaraman Jan 1994

Heavy Quark Solitons: Strangeness And Symmetry Breaking, Joseph Schechter, Arshad Momen, Anand Subbaraman

Physics - All Scholarship

We discuss the generalization of the Callan-Klebanov model to the case of heavy quark baryons. The light flavor group is considered to be SU(3) and the limit of heavy spin symmetry is taken. The presence of the Wess-Zumino-Witten term permits the neat development of a picture , at the collective level, of a light diquark bound to a ``heavy" quark with decoupled spin degree of freedom. The consequences of SU(3) symmetry breaking are discussed in detail. We point out that the SU(3) mass splittings of the heavy baryons essentially measure the ``low energy" physics once more and that the comparison …

Effective Internal Fields And Magnetization Buildup For Magnetotransport In Magnetic Multilayered Structures, Horacio E. Camblong Jan 1994

Effective Internal Fields And Magnetization Buildup For Magnetotransport In Magnetic Multilayered Structures, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

Starting with the Kubo formula for electric conductivity we derive a set of equations that define the spin diffusion that is present when current is driven through inhomogeneous magnetic media. We show the spin accumulation, or nonequilibrium magnetization, attendant to charge transport through regions of inhomogeneous magnetization is governed by the same equations found in a thermodynamic approach to magnetoelectric transport.

Theory Of Magnetotransport In Inhomogeneous Magnetic Structures, Horacio E. Camblong Jan 1994

Theory Of Magnetotransport In Inhomogeneous Magnetic Structures, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

The origin of the giant magnetoresistance of magnetic multilayers and magnetic granular solids is investigated through a unified spin‐dependent linear transport theory, in which the primary source of electrical resistivity is short‐range scattering by impurities in the different magnetic or nonmagnetic regions and at the interfaces. Our theory predicts that magnetotransport in granular solids is similar to that for currents perpendicular to the plane of the layers in multilayers in that their magnetoresistance is independent of the average distance between adjacent magnetic regions.

Dose, Robert Katz Jan 1994

Dose, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The universal use of dose as a normalizing parameter in radiobiology is based entirely on the availability of measuring instruments. It is a poor basis for predicting or understanding the relationship between an irradiation and the resulting end point. Energy deposited is not the cause of an interaction. It is a secondary effect. The interaction is best described by fluence and cross section. Energy deposited depends principally upon inelastic collision cross sections for the interaction of electrons with molecules. Especially for heavy-ion bombardments, for high-LET radiations, inelastic electron collision cross sections relate only remotely to the observed end points of …

Empirical Modeling Of The Quiet Time Nightside Magnetosphere, A. T. Y. Lui, Harlan E. Spence, D. P. Stern Jan 1994

Empirical Modeling Of The Quiet Time Nightside Magnetosphere, A. T. Y. Lui, Harlan E. Spence, D. P. Stern

Physics & Astronomy

Empirical modeling of plasma pressure and magnetic field for the quiet time nightside magnetosphere is investigated. Two models are constructed for this study. One model, referred to here as T89R, is basically the magnetic field model of Tsyganenko (1989) but is modified by the addition of an inner eastward ring current at a radial distance of ∼3 RE as suggested by observation. The other is a combination of the T89R model and the long version of the magnetic field model of Tsyganenko (1987) such that the former dominates the magnetic field in the inner magnetosphere, whereas the latter prevails in …

Replica Field Theory For Deterministic Models (Ii): A Non-Random Spin Glass With Glassy Behavior, Enzo Marinari, Giorgio Parisi, Felix Ritort

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We introduce and study a model which admits a complex landscape without containing quenched disorder. Continuing our previous investigation we introduce a disordered model which allows us to reconstruct all the main features of the original phase diagram, including a low T spin glass phase and a complex dynamical behavior.

Patches In The Polar Ionosphere: Ut And Seasonal Dependence, Jan Josef Sojka, M. D. Bowline, Robert W. Schunk Jan 1994

Patches In The Polar Ionosphere: Ut And Seasonal Dependence, Jan Josef Sojka, M. D. Bowline, Robert W. Schunk

All Physics Faculty Publications

The seasonal and UT dependencies of patches in the polar ionosphere are simulated using the Utah State University time dependent ionospheric model (TDIM). Patch formation is achieved by changing the plasma convection pattern in response to temporal changes in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By component during periods of southward IMF. This mechanism redirects the plasma flow from the dayside high-density region, which is the source of the tongue of ionization (TOI) density feature, through the throat and leads to patches, rather than a continuous TOI. The model predicts that the patches are absent at winter solstice (northern hemisphere) …

Modelling Sun-Aligned Polar Cap Arcs, D. J. Crain, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, Lie Zhu Jan 1994

Modelling Sun-Aligned Polar Cap Arcs, D. J. Crain, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, Lie Zhu

All Physics Faculty Publications

We present results of a new model of the time-dependent ionospheric response to a generalized steady state Sun-aligned (SA) arc structure. The thermal and plasma structure of a “prototype” arc is compared to the general features of observed SA arcs. We find that the general features of electron density, Ne , electron temperature, Te , and ion temperature, Ti , are determined by the distribution of the particle precipitation and E × B convection associated with the SA arc. The model results are extended to predict the possible variation of Ne, Te , and …

Ionospheric Response To The Sustained High Geomagnetic Activity During The March '89 Great Storm, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, W. F. Denig Jan 1994

Ionospheric Response To The Sustained High Geomagnetic Activity During The March '89 Great Storm, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, W. F. Denig

All Physics Faculty Publications

A simulation was conducted to model the high-latitude ionospheric response to the sustained level of high geomagnetic activity for the great magnetic storm period of March 13-14, 1989. The geomagnetic and solar activity indices and the DMSP F8 and F9 satellite data for particle precipitation and high-latitude convection were used as inputs to a time-dependent ionospheric model (TDIM). The results of the TDIM were compared to both DMSP plasma density data and ground-based total electron content (TEC) measurements for the great storm period as well as with earlier storm observations. The comparisons showed that the overall structure of the high-latitude …

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo For Thin Film Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, B. Alder, F. J. Alexander Jan 1994

Direct Simulation Monte Carlo For Thin Film Bearings, Alejandro Garcia, B. Alder, F. J. Alexander

Faculty Publications

The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) scheme is used to study the gas flow under a read/write head positioned nanometers above a moving disk drive platter (the slider bearing problem). In most cases, impressive agreement is found between the particle-based simulation and numerical solutions of the continuum hydrodynamic Reynolds equation which has been corrected for slip. However, at very high platter speeds the gas is far from equilibrium, and the load capacity for the slider bearing cannot be accurately computed from the hydrodynamic pressure.

Rate Coefficient For The Reaction N + No, Jane L. Fox Jan 1994

Rate Coefficient For The Reaction N + No, Jane L. Fox

Physics Faculty Publications

Evidence has been advanced that the rate coefficient for the reaction N + NO → N2; + O has a small positive temperature dependence at the high temperatures (900-1500 K) that prevail in the terrestrial middle and upper thermosphere by Siskind and Rusch (1992), and at the low temperatures (100-200 K) of the Martian lower thermosphere by Fox (1993). Assuming that the rate coefficient recommended by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory evaluation (DeMore et al., 1992) is accurate at 300 K, we derive here the low temperature value of the activation energy for this reaction and thus the rate …

Compton Scattering Of Gamma-Rays From Electrons In Advanced Laboratory, Christine A. Byrd, Morgan T. Burks, Lawrence A. Yates, Wilfred J. Braithwaite Jan 1994

Compton Scattering Of Gamma-Rays From Electrons In Advanced Laboratory, Christine A. Byrd, Morgan T. Burks, Lawrence A. Yates, Wilfred J. Braithwaite

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A kinematically-complete 2-body final state measurement of Compton scattering of 662-keV photons is presened, where both scattered photon energy and electron recoil energy are measured versus photon scattering angle, theta gamma. Passive collimation of the photon beam is avoided; each recoiling electron triggers a photon-scattering event providing active beam collimation. Recoiling electrons have low energies at small theta gamma, impairing electron detection efficiency. Examining the recoiling-electron energy spectra in coincidence with high-resolution gammas indicates a 1"x 1"NaI detector is superior to a 1"x1" NE-102 plastic scintillator as the active scattering material, for efficient recoil-electron detection. Electron efficiencies versus theta gamma …

Low-Energy Electrons And Their Dynamical Correlation With Recoil Ions For Single Ionization Of Helium By Fast, Heavy-Ion Impact, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich, M. Unverzagt, W. Schmidt, P. Jardin, Ronald E. Olson, R. Mann, R. Dörner, V. Mergel, U. Buck, H. Schmidt-Böcking

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Helium single ionization by 3.6 me V/u Ni24+ impact was explored in a kinematically complete experiment by combining a high-resolution recoil-ion momentum spectrometer with a novel 4 low-energy electron analyzer. More than 90% of the "soft electrons" (Ee50 eV) are ejected in the forward direction in agreement with classical-trajectory Monte Carlo predictions. The electron longitudinal momentum is not balanced by the longitudinal momentum change of the projectile but mainly by the backwards recoiling He1+ ion. Energy losses of the 0.2 GeV projectiles as small as EPEP=3.4x10-7 are observable. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

A Fringe Center Detection Technique Based On A Sub-Pixel Resolution, And Its Applications Using Sinusoidal Gratings, Ming Chang, Paul P. Lin, Wen Chih Tai Jan 1994

A Fringe Center Detection Technique Based On A Sub-Pixel Resolution, And Its Applications Using Sinusoidal Gratings, Ming Chang, Paul P. Lin, Wen Chih Tai

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A common problem in optical profilometry is the accuracy in locating fringe centers. This paper presents an accurate fringe center detection technique based on sub-pixel resolution using the fringe projection method. An optimum reconstruction filter is developed which has low sensitivity to noise. In fringe center detection, computer simulation results of using one-pixel and sub-pixel resolutions are compared. The detection technique is then applied to radius measurement of cylindrical objects and surface profile measurement of diffuse objects. The experimental results thus obtained through the proposed optimum reconstruction filter show significant improvement in measurement accuracy.

We report on the results of intensive ultraviolet spectral monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783. The nucleus of NGC 3783 was observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite on a regular basis for a total of 7 months, once every 4 days for the first 172 days and once every other day for the final 50 days. Significant variability was observed in both continuum and emission-line fluxes. The light curves for the continuum fluxes exhibited two well-defined local minima or "dips," the first lasting ≤20 days and the second ≤ 4 days, with additional episodes of relatively rapid …

Microscopic Simulation Of Dilute Gases With Adjustable Transport Coefficients, Alejandro Garcia, F. Baras, M. Malek Mansour Jan 1994

Microscopic Simulation Of Dilute Gases With Adjustable Transport Coefficients, Alejandro Garcia, F. Baras, M. Malek Mansour

Faculty Publications

The Bird algorithm is a computationally efficient method for simulating dilute gas flows. However, due to the relatively large transport coefficients at low densities, high Rayleigh or Reynolds numbers are difficult to achieve by this technique. We present a modified version of the Bird algorithm in which the relaxation processes are enhanced and the transport coefficients reduced, while preserving the correct equilibrium and nonequilibrium fluid properties. The present algorithm is found to be two to three orders of magnitude faster than molecular dynamics for simulating complex hydrodynamical flows.

Production And Extraction Of Polarized Electrons From An Optically Pumped Helium Discharge, Raymond James Vandiver Jan 1994

Production And Extraction Of Polarized Electrons From An Optically Pumped Helium Discharge, Raymond James Vandiver

Doctoral Dissertations

"Polarized electron sources are needed to study the spin dependent processes in atomic and molecular systems. This area of physics has enjoyed much success in the past decade due to the development of polarized electron sources of high electron polarization and current. We have investigated the production and extraction of polarized electrons from an optically pumped helium discharge.

We have directly extracted electrons with polarizations between 6% and 7% at currents greater than 200 µA from a helium DC discharge where the helium 23S1 metastable atoms are optically pumped to nearly 100% polarization. These high metastable polarizations …

Superelastic And Inelastic He2++He State-Selective Electron Capture, V. D. Irby, Timothy James Gay, John T. Park, S. W. Bross, A. D. Gaus

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental studies have been made of super elastic and inelastic collision processes involved in the state-selective single-electron capture reaction He2+3+He (1 1S)3He+(n)+He+(n), where n and n are the final principal quantum-number states of the collision products. Total cross sections have been measured at projectile energies of 15, 30, and 45 keV/u, by examining the energy loss-gain of the fast He+3 product ions, for the super elastic n=n=1 channel, and for the sum of the inelastic n=2, n=1 and n=1, n=2 states. Measurements are also presented for Ne and Ar targets. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

Numerical Simulation Of Nonequilibrium Effects In An Argon Plasma Jet, C. H. Chang, John D. Ramshaw Jan 1994

Numerical Simulation Of Nonequilibrium Effects In An Argon Plasma Jet, C. H. Chang, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Departures from thermal (translational), ionization, and excitation equilibrium in an axisymmetric argon plasma jet have been studied by two?dimensional numerical simulations. Electrons, ions, and excited and ground states of neutral atoms are represented as separate chemical species in the mixture. Transitions between excited states, as well as ionization/recombination reactions due to both collisional and radiative processes, are treated as separate chemical reactions. Resonance radiation transport is represented using Holstein escape factors to simulate both the optically thin and optically thick limits. The optically thin calculation showed significant underpopulation of excited species in the upstream part of the jet core, whereas …

A Covariant Description Of The Deuteron, J. W. Van Orden Jan 1994

A Covariant Description Of The Deuteron, J. W. Van Orden

Physics Faculty Publications

An introduction to the use of Bethe-Salpeter and quasipotential equations in the description of electron scattering from the deuteron is provided. The basic formalism and many technical issues are introduced in the context of a simple scalar theory. Results for bound-state wave functions and scattering phases shifts for a variety of quasipotential prescriptions are presented and qualitative characteristics of these solutions are discussed. The elastic form factors for the bound state in this model are calculated using the spectator or Gross equation. The calculations are then extended to account for the complexities associated with nucleon spin and results are presented …

Final State Distributions For Electron Capture From Orientated Rydberg Atoms, Jee-Ching Wang, Ronald E. Olson Dec 1993

Final State Distributions For Electron Capture From Orientated Rydberg Atoms, Jee-Ching Wang, Ronald E. Olson

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Final state nim distributions are studied for electron capture from orientated circular Rydberg atoms. Strong orientation effects are found for all quantum numbers at collision speeds comparable to the electron orbital speed. Predominant population of large m states is observed when the plane of the circular orbit is nearly perpendicular to the incident direction of the projectile. The Ini distributions show structures due to quasi-Thomas scattering even at low relative collision velocities. © 1993 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Neutron Reflection Interferometry: Physical Principles Of Surface Analysis With Phase Information, Vladimir Gudkov, G. I. Opat, A. G. Klein

Faculty Publications

It is shown that the analysis of surface layers by neutron reflection interferometry is considerably enhanced by performing the reflectometry with phase information. We discuss two methods of providing such information. One method involves physically adding an extra reference layer, whose amplitude and phase are known theoretically. The other uses the Lloyd's mirror configuration, in which a directly propagating ray that interferes with the reflected ray supplies the phase information. The methods have much in common with holography.

Far-Ultraviolet Stellar Photometry: A Field In Orion, Edward G. Schmidt, George R. Carruthers Dec 1993

Far-Ultraviolet Stellar Photometry: A Field In Orion, Edward G. Schmidt, George R. Carruthers

Edward Schmidt Publications

Far-ultraviolet photometry for 625 objects in Orion is presented. These data were extracted from electrographic camera images obtained during sounding rocket flights in 1975 and 1982. The 1975 images were centered close to the belt of Orion while the 1982 images were centered ~9° further north. One hundred and fifty stars fell in the overlapping region and were observed with both cameras. Sixty-eight percent of the objects were tentatively identified with known stars using the SIMBAD database while another 24% are blends of objects too close together to separate with our resolution. As in previous studies, the majority of the …

A fully three-dimensional linear stability analysis shows that ascending autocatalytic reaction fronts in vertical slabs are unstable to convection for large-wavelength perturbations at all finite values of the dimensionless driving parameter S=δga3/νDC. This parameter involves a fractional density difference δ between the unreacted and reacted fluids, the acceleration of gravity g, the slab width a, the kinematic viscosity ν, and the catalyst molecular diffusivity DC. Buoyancy dominates over the competing curvature dependence of the front velocity in a band 0c of unstable dimensionless wave numbers, with qc→S/24 as S→0 and qc …

Optical Wavelet Transform For Fingerprint Identification, Robert P. Macdonald Dec 1993

Optical Wavelet Transform For Fingerprint Identification, Robert P. Macdonald

Theses and Dissertations

The Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI has recently sanctioned a wavelet fingerprint image compression algorithm developed for reducing storage requirements of digitized fingerprints. This research implements an optical wavelet transform of a fingerprint image, as the first step in an optical fingerprint identification process. Wavelet filters are created from computer generated holograms of biorthogonal wavelets, the same wavelets implemented in the FBI algorithm. Using a detour phase holographic technique, a complex binary filter mask is created with both symmetry and linear phase. The wavelet transform is implemented with continuous shift using an optical correlation between binarized fingerprints written on a …

Performance Comparison Of Shearing Interferometer And Hartmann Wave Front Sensors, Timothy L. Pennington Dec 1993

Performance Comparison Of Shearing Interferometer And Hartmann Wave Front Sensors, Timothy L. Pennington

Theses and Dissertations

The resolution of optical imaging systems is severely degraded from the diffraction limit by the random effects of the atmosphere. Techniques exist to compensate for the atmospheric turbulence, one of which is adaptive optics. A critical component in the adaptive optics system is the wavefront sensor. Presently, two types of sensors are being used-the Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensor and the Shearing Interferometer. Previous studies have compared these two sensors and found them to perform identically for a point source. However, to date, no comparison has been performed for an extended source and subaperture spacing larger than the correlation length of the …

Boron carbide thin films of several B/C ratios have been deposited on Si(111) using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition from nido-pentaborane(9) (B5H9) and methane (CH4). X-ray diffraction studies of boron carbide thin films on Si(111) exhibited characteristic microcrystalline diffraction lines. Soft x-ray emission spectroscopy was used to verify that the local electronic structure and composition of each sample corresponded to a homogeneous solid solution boron carbide phase.

Failure Mechanisms Of High Temperature Semiconductor Lasers, David H. Leicester Dec 1993

Failure Mechanisms Of High Temperature Semiconductor Lasers, David H. Leicester

Theses and Dissertations

The primary intent of this research was to determine the influence of three common degradation mechanisms, dark area defects, facet degradation, and contact degradation, on the operational lifetime of GaAs edge-emitting semiconductor lasers driven by continuous current at 100°C. Inherent to this work was the quantified characterization of the lasers during their operation. This characterization arose as the power output as a function of driving current at room temperature before and after laser exposure to 100°C ambient temperature. These power vs. current characterizations were conducted at room temperature on each laser before and after exposure to 100°C as well as …
