Measurement Of N2+ Mobility In He Via Fourier Transform Emission Spectroscopy, Patrick D. Kee
Measurement Of N2+ Mobility In He Via Fourier Transform Emission Spectroscopy, Patrick D. Kee
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, Hong and Miller used Fourier Transform Emission (FTE) spectroscopy to determine the N2+ mobility in helium by relating the observed Doppler shift of the N2+ (B-X) transition to the measured electric field in the discharge as determined by probes. In order to establish the technique in-house, this effort duplicated that experiment and investigated the sensitivity and utility of the method. Doppler shift measurements in this experiment disagreed significantly with those reported by Hong and Miller. Attempts to reduce the data (and thus determine the mobility) using a model developed by Hong and Miller were unsuccessful. …
Feasibility Exploration Of Throughfold As A Predictor For Target Loading And Associated Error Bounds, Kris G. Rongone
Feasibility Exploration Of Throughfold As A Predictor For Target Loading And Associated Error Bounds, Kris G. Rongone
Theses and Dissertations
Various applications of the Fredholm integral equation appear m different fields of study. An application of particular interest to the Air Force arises in determination of target loading from nuclear effects simulations. Current techniques first unfold the incident spectrum then determine target loading; resulting spectrum and loading are assumed exact. This study investigates the feasibility of a new method, through-fold, for directly determining defensible error bounds on target loading. Through-fold uses a priori information to define input data and represents target response with a linear combination of instrument responses plus a remainder to derive a quadratic expression for exact target …
Generation Of A Single-Lobe, Far-Field Intensity Pattern From A Laser Diode Array Using An Optical Delay Line, Thomas A. Summers
Generation Of A Single-Lobe, Far-Field Intensity Pattern From A Laser Diode Array Using An Optical Delay Line, Thomas A. Summers
Theses and Dissertations
A simple and practical technique is demonstrated to generate a stable, single-lobe, far-field intensity pattern from a one-dimensional, antiphased, laser diode array with gain-guided elements. The two far-field lobes of the array are combined after introducing an optical delay line into the path of one of the lobes to make the lobes mutually incoherent. The incoherent superposition of intensities produces a near-diffraction-limited, single-lobe, far-field intensity pattern containing 84% of the power, exceeding any previous (known) phase control experiments. This technique compares favorably with more elaborate schemes advanced previously using integrated phase plates, etc. The method is directly applicable to one-dimensional …

Surface Core-Level Shifts And Atomic Coordination At A Stepped W(110) Surface, D. Mark Riffe, B. Kim, J. L. Erskine, N. D. Shinn
All Physics Faculty Publications
Core-level 4f7/2 photoemission spectra have been measured from a single, bifacial W crystal, which has both a flat W(110) and a vicinal, stepped W(110) [W(320)] surface. This procedure reduces uncertainties in the quantitative description of peaks in the spectra from W(320). Various analyses, including nonlinear least-squares curve fitting, show that the average surface core-level shift (SCS) for W(320) is only ∼-140 meV, compared to -310 meV for W(110) and that, at a maximum, only two of five terrace rows are isoelectronic to W(110) surface atoms. The absence of a large SCS for the step-edge atoms contradicts earlier interpretations of …

Rh(20 Å)/57Fe(tFe) multilayers with Fe thicknesses tFe of 2, 5, 10, and 15 Å prepared by alternate evaporation in UHV have been investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetometry. First- and second-order superstructure Bragg peaks (but no higher-order peaks) in small-angle XRD patterns suggest some compositional modulation. Mössbauer spectra taken at 4.2 K are characterized by a distribution P(Bhf) of hyperfine fields Bhf. Peaks observed in the P(Bhf) curves near 17 and 35 T are assigned to an fcc-RhFe interface alloy (~7–24 at. % Fe) with …
Deep Defects In Narrow-Gap Semiconductors, Weigang Li, James D. Patterson
Deep Defects In Narrow-Gap Semiconductors, Weigang Li, James D. Patterson
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications
We use a Green’s-function technique to calculate the position of deep defects in narrow-gap semiconductors. In order to predict chemical trends, we examine the effects of several different chemical elements. Substitutional (including antisite), (ideal) vacancy, and interstitial (self and foreign) deep defects are considered. The compounds considered are mercury cadmium telluride (MCT), mercury zinc telluride (MZT), and mercury zinc selenide (MZS). The effect of relaxation of neighbors is considered for the substitutional and interstitial cases. Relaxation effects can be greater for the interstitial case than for the substitutional one. For all cases we find deep defects in the energy gap …

Mössbauer Study Of Permanent-Magnet Materials: Sm2Fe17-XAlX Compounds, I.A. Al-Omari, Sitaram Jaswal, A.S. Fernando, David J. Sellmyer
David Sellmyer Publications
The Fe57 Mössbauer spectra of Sm2Fe17-xAlx, where x=0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0, have been measured at room temperature and analyzed. The ternary compounds Sm2Fe17-xAlx have the rhombohedral Th2Zn17 structure. Mössbauer measurements showed that all the compounds studied were ferromagnetic. The average hyperfine field was found to decrease with the increasing aluminum concentration, which is in qualitative agreement with magnetic measurements. The decrease in the average hyperfine field was from 224 kOe at x=0 to 174 kOe at x=4. By fitting the …
Aligned Two-Phase Magnets: Permanent Magnetism Of The Future? (Invited), Ralph Skomski
Aligned Two-Phase Magnets: Permanent Magnetism Of The Future? (Invited), Ralph Skomski
Ralph Skomski Publications
Micromagnetic calculations are used to investigate coercivity and energy products of magnets consisting of an aligned hard-magnetic skeleton phase and a soft-magnetic phase with high saturation magnetization. Compared to the present-day theoretical limit of 516 W/m3 for single-phase Nd2Fe14B, the energy product in suitable nanostructured Sm2Fe2N3/Fe65Co35 composites is predicted to be as high as 1090 kJ/m3. The influence of the skeleton’s texture and shape is discussed, and aligned nanocrystalline two-phase magnets are compared with remanence-enhanced isotropic magnets. In particular, it is shown how the nucleation-based analytical …

Iron Core Formation In Horse Spleen Ferritin: Magnetic Susceptibility, Ph, And Compositional Studies, S. Hilty, B. Webb, Richard B. Frankel, G. D. Watt
Physics
Horse spleen ferritin (HoSF) reconstituted with small iron cores ranging in size from 8 to 500 iron atoms was studied by magnetic susceptibility and pH measurements to determine when the added Fe3+ begins to aggregate and form antiferromagnetically coupled clusters and also to determine the hydrolytic state of the iron at low iron loading. The Evans NMR magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that at iron loadings as low as 8 Fe3+/HoSF, at least half of the added iron atoms were involved in antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and the other half were present as isolated iron atoms with S = …
Binary-Encounter-Dipole Model For Electron-Impact Ionization, Yong-Ki Kim, M. Eugene Rudd
Binary-Encounter-Dipole Model For Electron-Impact Ionization, Yong-Ki Kim, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
A theoretical model, which is free of adjustable or fitted parameters, for calculating electron impact ionization cross sections for atoms and molecules is presented. This model combines the binary-encounter theory with the dipole interaction of the Bethe theory for fast incident electrons. The ratios of the contributions from distant and close collisions and interference between the direct and exchange terms are determined by using the asymptotic behaviors predicted by the Bethe theory for ionization and for stopping cross sections. Our model prescribes procedures to calculate the singly differential cross section (energy distribution) for each subshell using the binding energy, average …
Cosmological And Wormhole Solutions In Low-Energy Effective String Theory, Mariano Cadoni, Marco Cavaglia
Cosmological And Wormhole Solutions In Low-Energy Effective String Theory, Mariano Cadoni, Marco Cavaglia
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We derive and study a class of cosmological and wormhole solutions of low-energy effective string field theory. We consider a general four-dimensional string effective action where moduli of the compactified manifold and the electromagnetic field are present. The cosmological solutions of the two-dimensional effective theory obtained by dimensional reduction of the former are discussed. In particular we demonstrate that the two-dimensional theory possesses a scale-factor duality invariance. Eucidean four-dimensional instantons describing the nucleation of the baby universes are found and the probability amplitude for the nucleation process given.
Mbe Growth Of Inxga1-Xas/Gaas/Si Heterostructure System, Jun Liu
Mbe Growth Of Inxga1-Xas/Gaas/Si Heterostructure System, Jun Liu
Theses
In this work, we grew the InxGa1-xAs/GaAs/Si (GaAs as buffer layer) by MBE technique. The surface of the buffer layer became microscopically rough as the thickness of the buffer layer increased and the growth mode of GaAs on Si underwent a change from three-dimensional to two-dimensional during the initial growth stage as indicated on the Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) screen. The Scattering Electron Microscopy (SEM) observation of the etched surface of GaAs on Si showed that the structure of the buffer layer tended to be poly-crystalline and it was possible that a predominant orientation …
Measurement Of The Hall Coefficient And Electron Mobility Using Van Der Pauw Type Hall Effect Measurements, Hong-Sheng Luo
Measurement Of The Hall Coefficient And Electron Mobility Using Van Der Pauw Type Hall Effect Measurements, Hong-Sheng Luo
Theses
Hall effect measurement in the electrical characterization of semiconductor materials is very important. We set up the Hall effect measurement system and examined the system with a standard sample. The experimental results show that this Hall measurement system worked as well as expected. We also used this system to study the GaAs/GaAs and InGaAs/GaAs which grown by MBE. Finally, we disscussed and consided some common problems of Hall measurement. Some useful formulas and plots are presented.
Particle Conjugation And The 1/N_C Corrections To G_A, Joseph Schechter, H. Weigel
Particle Conjugation And The 1/N_C Corrections To G_A, Joseph Schechter, H. Weigel
Physics - All Scholarship
We impose the requirement that the isovector axial vector current for the soliton sector of the chiral quark model transforms correctly under particle conjugation. This forces us to choose an otherwise arbitrary ordering of collective space operators in such a way that the next--to--leading 1/N_C correction to g_A vanishes.
On The Discretized Light Cone Quantization Of Electrodynamics, Alex C. Kalloniatis, David G. Robertson
On The Discretized Light Cone Quantization Of Electrodynamics, Alex C. Kalloniatis, David G. Robertson
Physics Faculty Scholarship
Discretized light-cone quantization of (3+1)-dimensional electrodynamics is discussed, with careful attention paid to the interplay between gauge choice and boundary conditions. In the zero longitudinal momentum sector of the theory a general gauge fixing is performed, and the corresponding relations that determine the zero modes of the gauge field are obtained. One particularly natural gauge choice in the zero mode sector is identified, for which the constraint relations are simplest and the fields may be taken to satisfy the usual canonical commutation relations. The constraints are solved in perturbation theory, and the Poincaré generators Pμ are constructed. The effect of …
Excited Heavy Baryons In The Bound State Picture, Joseph Schechter, Anand Subbaraman
Excited Heavy Baryons In The Bound State Picture, Joseph Schechter, Anand Subbaraman
Physics - All Scholarship
The orbitally excited heavy quark baryons are studied in the Callan Klebanov bound state model with heavy spin symmetry. First, a compact description of the large N_c, infinite heavy quark mass bound state wavefunctions and the collective quantization is given. In order to study the kinematical corrections due to finite masses we motivate an approximate Schrodinger-like equation for the bound state. The effective potential in this equation is compared with the quadratic approximation (spherical harmonic oscillator) to it. This oscillator approximation is seen to be not very accurate. It is noted that the present experimental information cannot be even qualitatively …

Nematic Ordering And Microphase Segregation In A Diblock Polymer Liquid-Crystal-Polymer, R. A. Sones, Rolfe G. Petschek
Faculty Scholarship
A theory of nematic ordering and microphase segregation in an incompressible melt of AB diblock copolymers is developed for the case when the A block is a polymer composed of NA monomers and the B block is a main-chain liquid crystal polymer composed of NB freely jointed nematogens. Isotropic monomer-nematogen interactions are characterized by a Flory parameter , and anisotropic nematogen-nematogen interactions are characterized by a Maier-Saupe parameter J. Long chains (NA,NB1) in the strong segregation limit (N1, with N=NA+NB) are considered. An approximate free energy of the melt is given for the following segregation morphologies: homogeneous, lamellar, cylindrical micelles, …

Dosimetry Of High-Energy Heavy-Ion Beams Using Energy-Dependent Green's Functions, Sang Yull Chun
Physics Theses & Dissertations
A theoretical description of the transport of high-charge and high-energy (HZE) ion bombardment of biological tissue is developed. The energy-dependent Green’s functions and particle fluxes are obtained for two boundary distributions - the monoenergetic and the Gaussian. Approximate energy-dependent Green’s functions for the collision terms are obtained for computational simplicity. As an application of the energy-dependent Green’s function method, dosimetric quantities, such as dose, dose-equivalent, and average quality factor, for 600A MeV56Fe , 517A MeV 40Ar, and 625A MeV 20Ne ion beams incident on a water target are obtained and compared with the values obtained from …
Rigorous Justification Of The Localized Approximation To The Beam Shape Coefficients In Generalized Lorenz-Mie Theory .1. On-Axis Beams, James A. Lock, Gérard Gouesbet
Rigorous Justification Of The Localized Approximation To The Beam Shape Coefficients In Generalized Lorenz-Mie Theory .1. On-Axis Beams, James A. Lock, Gérard Gouesbet
Physics Faculty Publications
Generalized Lorenz-Mie theory describes electromagnetic scattering of an arbitrary light beam by a spherical particle. The computationally most expensive feature of the theory is the evaluation of the beam-shape coefficients, which give the decomposition of the incident light beam into partial waves. The so-called localized approximation to these coefficients for a focused Gaussian beam is an analytical function whose use greatly simplifies Gaussian-beam scattering calculations. A mathematical justification and physical interpretation of the localized approximation is presented for on-axis beams.

Physics Faculty Publications
Radiative recombination from the AlxGa1-xAs-GaAs heterostructure interface was investigated using photoluminescence and photoluminescence-excitation spectroscopy in modulation-doped and undoped samples. This emission is identified as H-band A, resulting from an indirect excitonlike transition in real space. The exciton is made up of a two-dimensional electron in the interface notch and a valence-band hole in the neutral region, having a binding energy of 1.8 meV. The H-band A exciton is directly excited by a free exciton making a vertical transition in real space. H-band A may be a distortion of the vertical direct free exciton in real space …

High Resolution Fourier Transform Spectroscopy Of The First Overtone Of The N-O Stretch In Nitrosyl Bromide, Todd E. Wiest
Theses and Dissertations
Infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy of the first overtone of the nitric oxide (NO) bond stretch in nitrosyl bromide (ONBr) has been performed at a resolution of 0.02cm-1 to obtain the rotational parameters of the V1 = 2 energy level. Roughly 1000 transitions have been observed for rotational levels up to J = 80 and Ka = 7. The calculation of the complete set of rotational energy levels of this asymmetric molecule requires the numerical diagonalization of four, tridiagonal matricies for each J. From a non-linear least squares fit of observed transitions with J ≤ 40 using an …
Experiment Using Infrared Spectroscopy To Study The Effect Of Soil Characteristics Upon The Rate Of Trichloroethylene Desorption, Benjamin T. Kindt
Experiment Using Infrared Spectroscopy To Study The Effect Of Soil Characteristics Upon The Rate Of Trichloroethylene Desorption, Benjamin T. Kindt
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the influence of soil characteristics on the desorption of trichloroethylene (TCE). TCE is one of the most common contaminants at Superfund sites. Unfortunately, extraction of TCE from contaminated soils has been hindered by its slow and poorly understood desorption from soil particles. The rate and progress of desorption of TCE from seven types of soil with varying particle diameters and elemental compositions was measured using optical absorption techniques. Fitting the data to the Langmuir Isotherm functional form predicted in the literature yielded parameters for the desorption rate and total amount desorption each soil type. These parameters were …

Experimental studies have been made of superelastic and inelastic collision processes involved in the state-selective single-electron capture reaction 3He2++He(1 1S)→ +He+(n)+He+(n’), where n and n’ are the final principal quantum-number states of the collision products. Total cross sections have been measured at projectile energies of 15, 30, and 45 keV/u, by examining the energy loss-gain of the fast 3He+ product ions, for the superelastic n=n’=1 channel, and for the sum of the inelastic n=2, n’=1 and n=1, n’=2 states. A Three Region Analysis Of A Bounded Plasma Using Particle In Cell And Fluid Techniques, Don F. Nichols
A Three Region Analysis Of A Bounded Plasma Using Particle In Cell And Fluid Techniques, Don F. Nichols
Theses and Dissertations
A detailed collisionless sheath theory and a three-region collisional model of a bounded plasma are presented, and the suitability of the collisional model for analysis of ignited mode thermionic converters is investigated. The sheath theory extends previous analyses to regimes in which the sheath potential and electron temperatures are comparable in magnitude. In all operating regimes typical of a ignited mode thermionic converter, the predicted sheaths extend several mean-free paths. The apparent collisionality of the sheaths prompted development of a collisional, three-region model of the converter plasma. By interfacing Particle-in-Cell regions for the sheaths and fluid regions for the bulk …

Light-cone quantization of (3+1)-dimensional electrodynamics is discussed, using discretization as an infrared regulator and paying careful attention to the interplay between gauge choice and boundary conditions. The constraints are solved perturbatively and the structure of the theory is studied to lowest nontrivial order.

The total cross sections for the dissociative attachment (DA) process are reported for eight normal chloroalkanes CnH2n+1Cl for n=2–9, two secondary compounds 2-chloropropane and 2-chlorobutane, one tertiary compound t-butyl chloride, and three cyclic chloroalkanes c-CnH2n-1Cl for n=4–6, for electron energies below 4 eV. Using vertical attachment energies (VAEs) determined by electron transmission spectroscopy elsewhere and in this work, we show that the resonance widths vary linearly with VAE in this series of compounds and that the peak DA cross sections decline exponentially with increasing VAE. …

By means of photon emission spectroscopy the authors have studied state selective one-electron capture and target-ion excitation in collisions of He2+ with He. The collision energy has been varied from 1 to 75 keV amu-1. Four-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations have been performed in the energy range of 50-300 keV amu-1. In the energy range where experiment and theory overlap there is in general fair agreement, although the l-distributions within a principal quantum shell exhibit differences. At energies below 50 keV amu-1 the experiments confirm the results of atomic orbital calculations, presented in an accompanying paper by Fritsch (1994). …

We have studied numerically the dynamics of a driven elastic interface in a random medium, focusing on the thermal rounding of the depinning transition and on the behavior in the
T = 0 pinned phase. Thermal effects are quantitatively more important than expected from simple dimensional estimates. For sufficient low temperature the creep velocity at a driving force equal to the T = 0 depinning force exhibits a power-law dependence on T, in agreement with earlier theoretical and numerical predictions for CDW’s. We have also examined the dynamics in the T = 0 pinned phase resulting from slowly increasing the …

Neutron-Diffraction Study Of Γ-Fe At High Pressure, Oran Allan Pringle, Rafael Calvo, R. E. Parra
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
Face-centered-cubic iron (γ-Fe) coherently precipitated in a single crystal of Cu has been studied by neutron diffraction at high pressures up to 0.9 GPa and in the temperature range from about 5 to 110 K. It undergoes antiferromagnetic ordering at 67±2 K at ambient pressure. The ordering temperature TN monotonically decreases with increasing pressure following a relation TN(K)=67-12.8p - 11.1p2 - 6.17p3, where p is in units of GPa. The change of TN in γ-Fe is discussed in terms of the volume change caused by pressurization or by alloying.
