To address the electrical length differences between the coaxial cable pairs used to connect the array’s beamformers in the field to the beamformer controllers in the control room, precise …

Influence Of Thickness And Capping Materials On The Static And Dynamic Properties Of Ferrimagnetic Thin Films, Noha Alzahrani Nov 2023

Influence Of Thickness And Capping Materials On The Static And Dynamic Properties Of Ferrimagnetic Thin Films, Noha Alzahrani

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Spintronics traditionally relied on ferromagnetic materials for their strong spin properties but facedissues like large stray magnetic fields. To address these challenges, researchers turned to antiferromagnetic materials with fast spin dynamics, due to their zero net magnetic moment but the lack of a net spin moment complicated operation. In this context, ferrimagnetic materials have emerged as promising alternatives. They combine ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic traits and feature different magnetic ions in their sublattices. This dissertation explores how film thickness and capping materials affect the properties of ferrimagnetic thin films. Rare-earth transition metal ferrimagnetic amorphous alloys have garnered attention in the realm …

Wide Range Thin-Film Ceramic Metal-Alloy Thermometers With Low Magnetoresistance, Nathanael Fortune, Joyce E. Palmer-Fortune, A. Trainer, A. Bangura, N. Kondedan, A. Rydh

Physics: Faculty Publications

Many thermal measurements in high magnetic fields require thermometers that are sensitive over a wide temperature range, are low mass, have a rapid thermal response, and have a minimal, easily correctable magnetoresistance. Here we report the development of a new granular-metal oxide ceramic composite (cermet) for this purpose formed by co-sputtering of the metallic alloy nichrome Ni0.8Cr0.2 and the insulator silcon dioxide SiO2. The resulting thin films are sensitive enough to be used from room temperature down to below 100 mK in magnetic fields up to at least 35 tesla.

Efficient detection of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is extremely important for the safety of humans and for the moderation of agriculture. This calls for the design of versatile nanosensors capable of sensing toxic POPs with high sensitivity and selectivity. Inspired by this, the sensing characteristics of carbon nitride (C3N5) monolayers toward selected POPs are reported, such as Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), Methoxychlor (DMDT), Fenthion (FT), Fenitrothion (FNT), and Rennol (RL), employing density functional theory calculations. Analysis of results predicts adsorption energies of −0.93, −1.55, −1.44, −0.98, and −1.15 eV for DDT, DMDT, FT, FNT, and RM, respectively, on C3N5 monolayers. Significant …

Probing The Electroweak Phase Transition With Exotic Higgs Decays, Marcela Carena, Jonathan Kozaczuk, Zhen Liu, Tong Ou, Michael J. Ramsey-Musolf, Jessie Shelton, Yikun Wang, Ke-Pan Xie

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

An essential goal of the Higgs physics program at the LHC and beyond is to explore the nature of the Higgs potential and shed light on the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. An important class of models alter the thermal history of electroweak symmetry breaking from the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). This paper reviews the existence of a region of parameter space where a strong first-order electroweak phase transition is compatible with exotic decays of the SM-like Higgs boson. A dedicated search for exotic Higgs decays can actively explore this framework at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), while …

Extended Defects And Linear Junctions At The Surfaces Of Topological Insulators, Eklavya Thareja Nov 2023

Extended Defects And Linear Junctions At The Surfaces Of Topological Insulators, Eklavya Thareja

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Topological Insulators (TIs) have emerged as promising candidates for spintronics and quantum computing applications. Two properties that underlie these applications are the locking of spin and momentum of the surface electrons and topological protection of surface states. While the existence of gapless surface states is guaranteed by topology, as long as time-reversal symmetry is intact, other properties of the surface states are still tunable. Spin-momentum locking makes these states immune to scattering from non-magnetic point impurities. However, extended defects can scatter the states even with electrostatic potential. We show that a line defect with magnetic and electrostatic potential scattering hosts …

Uv Dynamics Of Different Ring Molecules Studied By Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, Sajib Kumar Saha

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Understanding natural light-induced phenomena requires a direct viewing of atomic motion during structural evolution, which, in turn, facilitates controlling and manipulating these light-induced processes. Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) is a structure-sensitive technique that can probe electronic and nuclear dynamics at sub-angstrom spatial and femtosecond time scales. UED has become a vital tool for studying photo-induced molecular dynamics and underlying science. Organic ring systems are prevalent in biology, materials, and pharmaceuticals. Their synthesis and transformation are fundamental in synthetic chemistry, influencing various fields. We used UV photons to photo-excite different cyclic molecules and investigated their photo-dynamics using gas phase UED. The …

Hydroxyapatite-Based Coatings On Silicon Wafers And Printed Zirconia, Antoine Chauvin

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Dental surgery needs a naturally attract implant design that can ensure both osseointegration and soft tissue integration. Hydroxyapatite (HAp), the main mineral constituent of dentine and tooth enamel, is commonly used as a coating component, notably for overlaying titanium– or ceramics–based implants. This thesis aims to investigate the behavior of a HAp-based coating, specifically designed to be compatible with a porous substrate. Coating layers are made by sol–gel dip coating by immersion of porous substrates made by additive manufacturing into solutions of HAp, having been mixed with polyethyleneimine (PEI), to improve the adhesion of HAp on the substrate. First, the …

Theses

Studying Mars offers insights into terrestrial planet evolution and informs future human expeditions. This thesis examines dust dynamics in Mars’ lower atmosphere, focusing on understanding its weather and climate. We investigate the role of Near-Surface Wind Stress (NSWS) in dust lifting, using six reanalysis datasets, respectively: MACDA, EMARS, OpenMARS, ACS–TIRVIM (ExoMars observations of the MY34 Global Dust storm), EMM1 and EMM2. Following the parameterization approach by Newman et al. (2002a), areas of agreement and discrepancy among datasets were identified. Time series analysis revealed consistent results where datasets overlap temporally. Some differences were expected and shown due to the different Global …

Search For Pair Production Of Vector-Like Quarks In Cms Run 2 Data, Julie Hogan Oct 2023

Search For Pair Production Of Vector-Like Quarks In Cms Run 2 Data, Julie Hogan

Day of Scholarship

The Compact Muon Solenoid experiment (CMS) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider records proton-proton collision data in order to study the particles and forces that exist in very high energy conditions. The 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson was a triumph for the field of particle physics, but pointed toward the probably existence of unknown high-mass particles. Vector-like quarks (VLQs) are a possible type of high-mass fermions, and their decays to lighter particles create exciting detector signatures. This search utilizes deep machine learning to both identify decay products of VLQs in the detector and to separate potential signal events from …

Breakdown Of The Drift-Diffusion Model For Transverse Spin Transport In A Disordered Pt Film, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Giovanni G. Baez Flores, Wuzhang Fang, Alexey Kovalev, Mark Van Schilfgaarde, Paul M. Haney, Mark D. Stiles

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Spin-accumulation and spin-current profiles are calculated for a disordered Pt film subjected to an in-plane electric current within the nonequilibrium Green's function approach. In the bulklike region of the sample, this approach captures the intrinsic spin Hall effect found in other calculations. Near the surfaces, the results reveal qualitative differences with the results of the widely used spin-diffusion model, even when the boundary conditions are modified to try to account for them. One difference is that the effective spin-diffusion length for transverse spin transport is significantly different from its longitudinal counterpart and is instead similar to the mean-free path. This …

Understanding The Nature Of Pulsars And Characterizing Propagation Effects Using Pulsar Timing, Pratik Kumar Oct 2023

Understanding The Nature Of Pulsars And Characterizing Propagation Effects Using Pulsar Timing, Pratik Kumar

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Pulsars are highly magnetized stellar remnants, among the densest known objects, and primarily produce radio emission in the form of lighthouse beams sweeping across the line of sight as a regular train of pulses. Apart from providing tests for matter in high-density regimes, general relativity, and plasma emission; perhaps the most notable characteristic is their applicability as precise astronomical clocks to measure various effects. Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) are galactic scale detectors analogous to ground-based detectors of Gravitational Waves (GWs) like LIGO, with the aim of detecting low-frequency nano-Hz GWs from coalescing binary supermassive black holes. PTAs consist of a …

Active-Illumination Extension To The Priest And Meier Pbrdf, Mark F. Spencer, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Santasri R. Bose-Pillai, Michael A. Marciniak

Faculty Publications

This paper develops a 3D vector solution for the scattering of partially coherent laser-beam illumination from statistically rough surfaces. Such a solution enables a rigorous comparison to the well-known Priest and Meier polarimetric bidirectional reflectance distribution function (pBRDF) [Opt Eng 41(5),988 (2002).]. Overall, the comparison shows excellent agreement for the normalized spectral density and the degree of polarization. Based on this agreement, the 3D vector solution also enables an extension to the Priest and Meier pBRDF that accounts for the effects of active illumination. In particular, the 3D vector solution enables the development of a closed-form expression for the spectral …

New Quantum Genetic Algorithm Based On Constrained Quantum Optimization, Mohammed R. Almasaoodi, Abdulbasit M. A. Sabaawi, Sara El Gaily, Sándor Imre

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

In the past decades, many quantum algorithms have been developed. The main obstacle that prevents the widespread implementation of these algorithms is the small size of the available quantum computer in terms of qubits. Blind Quantum Computation (BQC) holds the promise of handling this issue by delegating computation to quantum remote devices. Here, we introduce a novel Constrained Quantum Genetic Algorithm (CQGA) that selects the optimum extreme (minimum or maximum) value of a constrained goal function (or a vast unsorted database) with very low computational complexity. Since the convergence speed to the optimal solution for the Constrained Classical Genetic Algorithm …

Gaxin2-Xo3 Surface Pyramids Interaction With Formaldehyde: Thermodynamic And Sensing Analysis, Mudar Ahmed Abdulsattar

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

GaxIn2-xO3 surface pyramids' electronic structures are investigated using density functional theory, including dispersion corrections. Application of GaxIn2-xO3 surface pyramids as a gas sensor for formaldehyde is also performed and compared with experimental findings. These findings show that the energy gap of these pyramids follows closely with the bulk values. The energy gap increases between the two limits, In2O3 and Ga2O3. Applying GaxIn2-xO3 surface pyramids as a gas sensor uses transition state theory formalism. Thermodynamic quantities such as activation Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy are needed for temperature-dependent calculations. A comparison of sensor response which is proportional to reaction rate as …

Raman Spectral Cytopathology For Cancer Diagnostic Applications, Fiona Lyng, Damian Traynor, Isha Behl, Declan O'Dea, Hugh Byrne

Books/Book Chapters

Histopathology is currently regarded as the “gold standard” patient sampling technique for cancer diagnostics. It involves extraction of a tissue sample, or biopsy, which is then sectioned and stained for evaluation by a pathologist [1]. Cytopathology, on the other hand, is the field of disease diagnosis at the cellular level [2], necessitating only the microscopic evaluation of samples of cells which can be harvested by less invasive methods such as exfoliative brushing, needle probes or from biofluids. Based on the identification of abnormalities in cellular appearance, cytopathology is currently widely used to aid in the screening of cancer, as well …
