Electroweak Symmetry Breaking In Low-Scale Quantum Gravity, M. Boz, A. Demi̇r, Namik Kemal Pak Jan 1999

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking In Low-Scale Quantum Gravity, M. Boz, A. Demi̇r, Namik Kemal Pak

Turkish Journal of Physics

We discuss the implications of low-scale quantum gravity on electroweak symmetry breaking by computing one-loop gravitational corrections to the Higgs potential. We conclude that these radiative corrections are quite large after summing over the graviton and dilaton Kaluza-Klein towers, and there is no possibility of electroweak symmetry breaking unless one allows for the complex vacuum expectation value for the Higgs field.

Stellar Observations Made At The Malatya Danjon Astrolabe Station, Orhan Gölbaşi, Hüseyi̇n Kiliç, Fernand Chollet

Turkish Journal of Physics

We give here the first results of astrometric stellar observations made at the Malatya Station with the modified astrolabe of Paris observatory. This campaign is conducted as part of a cooperation between Inönü University and the Paris Observatory. The astrolabe, which is strictly similar to that of Santiago de Chile, can use two reflecting prisms instead of the trnsparent prism of the Danjon Astrolabe. Consequently, it is possible to observe at the two zenith distances of 30° and 60°. The time is supplied by a GPS receiver which gives UTC with the necessary precision. As the station is a new …

Magnetisation In Two-Dimensions, Bengü Kaplan Jan 1999

Magnetisation In Two-Dimensions, Bengü Kaplan

Turkish Journal of Physics

We discuss the magnetisation deviation in two-dimensions (2d) for an iron film for which the anisotropy is much smaller and hence the magnetisation is a stronger function of temperature. The magnetisation deviation can be adequately described by an RPA (random phase approximation) approach. Our results fit the experimental data at high fields and hence can be used to estimate the value of the effective exchange interaction (J_{2d}) for monolayer (ML) films.

We search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a massive vector boson in 91 ± 7 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume the Higgs scalar H0 decays to a bb̅ pair with branching ratio β, and we consider the hadronic decays of the vector boson V (W or Z). Observations are consistent with background expectations. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on σ (pp̅→H0V) β as a function of the scalar mass (MH0) …

Density Of Zeros On The Lee-Yang Circle Obtained From Magnetization Data Of A Two-Dimensional Ising Ferromagnet, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

In order to provide experimental access to the statistical theory of Lee and Yang [Phys. Rev. 87, 410 (1952)] the density function g(θ) of zeros on the Lee-Yang circle has been determined for the first time by analyzing isothermal magnetization data m(H) of the Ising ferromagnet FeCl2 in axial magnetic fields H at temperatures 34≤T≤99 K. The validity of our approach is demonstrated by the perfect agreement of magnetic specific heat data as calculated from g(θ) and m(H) via Maxwell's relation. Moreover, the correct in-plane exchange constant of FeCl2 emerges from the …

An Ab Initio Study Of The Mono- And Difluorides Of Krypton, Gerald J. Hoffman, Laura A. Swafford '97, Robert J. Cave Dec 1998

An Ab Initio Study Of The Mono- And Difluorides Of Krypton, Gerald J. Hoffman, Laura A. Swafford '97, Robert J. Cave

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Results from ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T) level of theory are presented for krypton monofluoride (KrF), krypton monofluoride cation (KrF+), linear, ground-state krypton difluoride (KrF2), the triplet state of krypton difluoride, and the krypton–fluorine van der Waals complex (Kr–F2). These are the first calculations demonstrating that KrF is a bound molecule, in agreement with experimental observation. When corrected for basis-set superposition error, the calculated potential displays quantitative agreement with the attractive wall of the experimentally measured potential curve. Results are also presented for KrF+ and linear KrF2 which yield accurate values for their dissociation energies. The triplet state of …

Events With A Rapidity Gap Between Jets In P̅P Collisions At √S = 630 Gev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a measurement of the fraction of dijet events with a rapidity gap between jets produced by color-singlet exchange in p̅p collisions at √s =630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. In events with two jets of transverse energy ETjet > 8 GeV, pseudorapidity in the range 1.8 <|ηjet | < 3.5 and η1 η2 < 0, the color-singlet exchange fraction is found to be R=[2.7 ± 0.7(stat) ± 0.6(syst)]%. Comparisons are made with results obtained at √s =1800 GeV and with theoretical expectations.

As part of an extensive multi-wavelength monitoring campaign, the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to observe the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 during the period 1994 December 31-1996 March 5. Spectra were obtained every 6È10 days. The UV continuum varied by a factor of 7 through the campaign, while the broad emission lines varied by factors of 2È5. Unlike previously monitored Seyfert 1 galaxies, in which the X-ray continuum generally varies with a larger amplitude than the UV, in 3C 390.3 the UV continuum light curve is similar in both amplitude and shape to the X-ray light curve observed …

The cross section for the photoproduction of events containing three jets with a three-jet invariant mass of M31 > 50 GeV has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The three-jet angular distributions are inconsistent with a uniform population of the available phase space but are well described by parton shower models and script O sign(α α2s) pQCD calculations. Comparisons with the parton shower model indicate a strong contribution from initial state radiation as well as a sensitivity to the effects of colour coherence. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Excitation Efficiency Of A Morphology-Dependent Resonance By A Focused Gaussian Beam, James A. Lock Dec 1998

Excitation Efficiency Of A Morphology-Dependent Resonance By A Focused Gaussian Beam, James A. Lock

Physics Faculty Publications

The excitation efficiency of a morphology-dependent resonance (MDR) by an incident beam is defined as the fraction of the beam power channeled into the MDR. The efficiency is calculated for a focused Gaussian beam of arbitrary width incident on either a spherical particle or a cylindrical fiber located at an arbitrary position in the plane of the beam waist. In each case a simple formula for the efficiency is derived by use of the localized approximation for the beam-shape coefficients in the partial-wave expansion of the beam. The physical interpretation of the efficiency formulas is also discussed. (C) 1998 Optical …

Dimuonium (the bound system of two muons, the μ+ μ--atom system) has not been observed yet. In this paper we discuss the electromagnetic production of dimuonium at RHIC and LHC in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The production of parastates is analyzed in the equivalent photon approximation. For the treatment of orthostates, we develop a three-photon formalism. We determine the production rates at RHIC and LHC with an accuracy of a few percent and discuss problems related to the observation of dimuonium.

Nonanalytic Magnetization Dependence Of The Magnon Effective Mass In Itinerant Quantum Ferromagnets, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick, Andrew J. Millis, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The spin-wave dispersion relation in both clean and disordered itinerant quantum ferromagnets is calculated. It is found that effects akin to weak-localization physics cause the frequency of the spin waves to be a nonanalytic function of the magnetization m. For low frequencies Ω, small wave vectors k, and m→0, the dispersion relation is found to be of the form Ω=const x m1-αk2, with α = (4-d)/2 (2 < d < 4) for disordered systems, and α = (3-d) (1 < d < 3) for clean ones. In d = 4 (disordered) and d = 3 (clean), Ωαm ln (1/m) k2. Experiments to test these predictions are proposed.

Collisional Effects In The Absorption Spectra Of The Oxygen A Band And Nitric Oxide Fundamental Band, Robert S. Pope Dec 1998

Collisional Effects In The Absorption Spectra Of The Oxygen A Band And Nitric Oxide Fundamental Band, Robert S. Pope

Theses and Dissertations

Fourier transform spectroscopy was used to measure pressure broadening coefficients in the absorption spectra of both the oxygen A band and the nitric oxide fundamental band. Oxygen spectra were recorded with O2, N2, CO, CO2, SF6 and noble gas collision partners, while nitric oxide spectra were recorded using noble gas collision partners. Pressure broadening coefficients were determined in the P and R branches for every resolved line for each of the fifteen collision pairs studied. In addition, broadening coefficients and qualitative evidence of line coupling were found for the Q branch of NO …

Double Differential Cross Section Of Helium Ionization By Proton Impact, A. L. Godunov, V. A. Schipakov, Michael Schulz

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A theoretical analysis for doubly differential cross sections of the single ionization of helium by proton impact as a function of the scattering angle and projectile energy loss is presented. We have used two different theoretical methods. The first approach involved an approximate solution of Faddeev-Merkuriev equations for the three-body Coulomb problem. The second approach employed the expansion of the transition amplitude in the Born series over the projectile-target interaction up to second order. A relation between these two methods was established for the case of fast collisions. It has been demonstrated that, for small scattering angles, the post-collision interaction …

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos Nov 1998

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study the conditions under which an overdamped regime can be attained in the dynamic evolution of a quantum field configuration. Using a real-time formulation of finite temperature field theory, we compute the effective evolution equation of a scalar field configuration, quadratically interacting with a given set of other scalar fields. We then show that, in the overdamped regime, the dissipative kernel in the field equation of motion is closely related to the shear viscosity coefficient, as computed in scalar field theory at finite temperature. The effective dynamics is equivalent to a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau description of the approach to equilibrium …

In their Comment [1] to our Letter [2], Rutherford and Grobe first disagree with our conclusion that “a tabletop Stern-Gerlach filter is feasible.” Given our estimate of the throughput for such a device, ~0.3 electrons/s, we were clearly not proposing it as an alternative to standard polarized electron sources (~1015 electrons/s). The main argument for “feasibility” is based on the relatively low currents required to establish the solenoidal magnetic field (5 A)—hence the use of the word “tabletop” in the abstract. In retrospect, a better statement would have been that “experimental demonstration of such a spin-splitting effect may be …

Development Of A Generalized Theoretical Model For The Response Of A Phase/Doppler Measurement System To Arbitrarily Oriented Fibers Illuminated By Gaussian Beams, Scott A. Schaub, James A. Lock, Amir A. Naqwi

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a generalized theoretical model for the response of the phase/Doppler (P/D) measurement system to light scattered by cylindrical fibers. This theoretical model is valid for arbitrary fiber diameters and refractive indices, for Gaussian incident beams, and it accounts for arbitrary fiber orientations, fiber positions, and effects that are due to the two-dimensional receivers. The generalized P/D computer model (GPDCM) is the extension of an earlier study by the authors, combining past P/D simulation methodology with recent developments in modeling light scattering by tilted cylindrical fibers. A FORTRAN computer program that implements the GPDCM theoretical development was written and …

One aspect of the complexity of mid- and high-harmonic generation in highintensity laser-plasma interactions is that nonlinear hydrodynamics is virtually always folded together with the nonlinear optical conversion process. We have partly dissected this issue in picosecond and subpicosecond interactions with preformed plasma gradients, imaging and spectrally resolving low- and mid-order harmonics. We describe spatial breakup of the picosecond beam in preformed plasmas, concomitant broaden~ng and breakup of the harmonic spectrum. presumably through self-phase modulation, together with data on the sensitivity of harmonics production efficiency to the gradient or extent of prefomed plasma. Lastly. we show preliminary data of regular …

Doubly differential cross sections d2σ / dν ‖ dν⊥ have been obtained by mapping the 3-dimensional velocity space of ultralow- and low-energy electrons \ (1.5 meV < = Ee < = 100 eV \) emitted in singly ionizing 3.6 MeV / u Au53+ on helium collisions. A sharp \ ( ΔEFWHMe⊥< = 22 meV \) asymmetric peak centered at = 0 is observed to emerge at ultralow energies from the strongly forward shifted low-energy electron velocity distribution. The shape of this "target cusp," which is very sensitive on the details of the two-center potential, is in excellent accord with theoretical predictions. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Parity nonconservation was studied for 23 p-wave resonances in 113Cd up to En=500eV at the LANSCE pulsed neutron source using a longitudinally polarized neutron beam and the time-of-flight method. The helicity dependence of the total neutron capture cross section was measured with an enriched 113Cd target and with a target of natural cadmium. Parity violating effects were observed for several resonances in 113Cd and 111Cd. A root-mean-square value of the parity nonconserving matrix element MJ=1=2.9-0.9+1.3meV was obtained for the spin J=1 levels in the compound nucleus 114Cd. This …

Using a realistic model for line emission from the broad emission line regions of quasars, we are able to reproduce the previously observed correlations of emission-line ratios with the shape of the spectral energy distribution (SED). In agreement with previous studies, we find that the primary driving force behind the Baldwin effect (Wλ ~ Lβ, β < 0) is a global change in the SED with quasar luminosity, in that more luminous quasars must have characteristically softer ionizing continua. This is completely consistent with observations that show (1) a correlation between Luv, αox, and αuvx (2) correlations of SED shape-sensitive line ratios with αox, αuvx, and Luv; and (3) correlations between line equivalent widths and αox, αuvx …

Simple Model For Linear And Nonlinear Mixing At Unstable Fluid Interfaces With Variable Acceleration, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model is described for predicting the time evolution of the half-width h of a mixing layer between two initially separated immiscible fluids of different density subjected to an arbitrary time-dependent variable acceleration history a(t). The model is based on a heuristic expression for the kinetic energy per unit area of the mixing layer. This expression is based on that for the kinetic energy of a linearly perturbed interface, but with a dynamically renormalized wavelength which becomes proportional to h in the nonlinear regime. An equation of motion for h is then derived from Lagrange's equations. This model reproduces …

A gas-phase time-of-flight (TOF) apparatus, capable of supporting as many as six electron-TOF analyzers viewing the same interaction region, has been developed to measure energy- and angle-resolved electrons with kinetic energies up to 5 keV. Each analyzer includes a newly designed lens system that can retard electrons to about 2% of their initial kinetic energy without significant loss of transmission; the analyzers can thus achieve a resolving power (E/ΔE) greater than 104 over a wide kinetic-energy range. Such high resolving power is comparable to the photon energy resolution of state-of-the-art synchrotron–radiation beamlines in the soft …

Stability And Reconstruction For An Inverse Problem For The Heat Equation, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill Nov 1998

Stability And Reconstruction For An Inverse Problem For The Heat Equation, Kurt Bryan, Lester Caudill

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We examine the inverse problem of determining the shape of some unknown portion of the boundary of a region Ω from measurements of the Cauchy data for solutions to the heat equation on Ω. By suitably linearizing the inverse problem we obtain uniqueness and continuous dependence results. We propose an algorithm for recovering estimates of the unknown portion of the surface and use the insight gained from a detailed analysis of the inverse problem to regularize the inversion. Several computational examples are presented.

We investigate the influence of electron-electron interactions on the conductance of two-dimensional disordered spinless electrons. We present an efficient numerical method based on diagonalization in a truncated basis of Hartree-Fock states to determine with high accuracy the low-energy properties in the entire parameter space. We find that weak interactions increase the dc conductance in the strongly localized regime while they decrease the dc conductance for weak disorder. Strong interactions always decrease the conductance. We also study the localization of single-particle excitations at the Fermi energy which turns out to be only weakly influenced by the interactions.

In this paper we describe a search for four radiative decay modes of the D0 meson: D0 → φγ, D0 → ωγ, D0 → K-*γ, and D0 → ρ0γ . We obtain 90% C.L. upper limits on the branching ratios of these modes of 1.9 X 10-4, 2.4 X 10-4, 7.6 X 10-4, and 2.4 X 10-4, respectively.
