Search For A Technicolor ΩT Particle In Events With A Photon And A B-Quark Jet At Fermilab, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

If the technicolor ωT particle exists, a likely decay mode is ωT→ γπT , followed by πT → bb̅, yielding the signature γbb̅. We have searched 85 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron for events with a photon and two jets, where one of the jets must contain a secondary vertex implying the presence of a b quark. We find no excess of events above standard model expectations. We express the result as an exclusion region in the MωT -MπT …

Chiral Lagrangian Treatment Of Pi Eta Scattering, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz Oct 1999

Chiral Lagrangian Treatment Of Pi Eta Scattering, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz

Physics - All Scholarship

We study pi eta scattering in a model which starts from the tree diagrams of a non-linear chiral Lagrangian including appropriate resonances. Previously, models of this type were applied to pi pi and pi K scattering and were seen to require the existence of light scalar sigma(560) and kappa(900) mesons and to be consistent with the f0(980). The present calculation extends this to include the a0(980), thereby completing a possible nonet of light scalars, all ``seen'' in the same manner. We note that, at the initial level, the pi eta channel is considerably cleaner than the pi pi and pi …

Differential Projectile Energy Loss In Multiply Ionizing Collisions, M. Schulz, R. Moshammer, W. Schmitt, H. Kollmus, R. Mann, S. Hagmann, Ronald E. Olson, J. Ullrich

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The momentum vectors of the recoil ion and up to three electrons were measured in coincidence with the projectiles which did not change charge state for 3.6 MeV amu-1 Au53+ → Ne collisions. New techniques were applied to obtain differential energy-loss spectra for multiple-target ionization as a function of the recoil-ion charge state. A resolution unprecedented for this energy regime was achieved. The data are in good agreement with a classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculation. Our studies represent a first step for a method of modelling stopping powers on a microscopic level and are relevant for plasma applications.

State-To-State Rotational Excitation Of Co By H2 Near 1000 Cm-1 Collision Energy, Stiliana Antonova, Antonis P. Tsakotellis, Ao Lin, George C. Mcbane

Relative state-to-state rotationally inelastic cross sections for excitation of carbon monoxide by hydrogen were measured in a crossed molecular beam experiment at collision energies 795, 860, and 991 cm-1. The results are compared to predictions of a recent ab initio potential energy surface [J. Chem. Phys. 108, 3554 (1998)]. The agreement is very good. A comparison with older data on thermally averaged total depopulation cross sections [Chem. Phys. 53, 165 (1980)] indicates that the absolute magnitudes of the cross sections predicted by the surface are too high. The CO excitation is dominated by collisions that are …

Parity nonconservation (PNC) has been studied in the neutron p-wave resonances of 106Pd and 108Pd in the energy range of 20 to 2000 eV. Longitudinal asymmetries in p-wave capture cross sections are measured using longitudinally polarized neutrons incident on ∼20-g metal-powder targets at LANSCE. A CsI γ-ray detector array measures capture cross section asymmetries as a function of neutron energy which is determined by the neutron time-of-flight method. A total of 21 p-wave resonances in 106Pd and 21 p-wave resonances in 108Pd were studied. One statistically significant PNC effect was observed in106Pd, and no …

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu Oct 1999

The Microchannel Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid, Guohua Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Micro-channel flows have been computed to investigate the influence of Navier-Stokes formulation for the slip-flow boundary condition, and a micro-polar fluid model, respectively.

The results of the slip boundary condition show that the current methodology is valid for slip-flow regime (i.e., for values of Knudsen number less than approximately 0.1). Drag reduction phenomena apparent in some micro-channels can be explained by slip-flow theory. These results are in agreement with some computations and experiments.

An ad hoc micro-polar fluid model is developed to investigate the influence of micro effects, such as micro-gyration, in micro-scale flows. The foundation of the ad hoc …

Validity Of The Independent-Particle Approximation In X-Ray Photoemission: The Exception, Not The Rule, D. Hansen, Oliver Hemmers, H. Wang, Dennis W. Lindle, P. Focke, I. A. Sellin, Clemens Heske, H. S. Chakraborty, P. C. Deshmukh, S. T. Manson Oct 1999

A combined experimental and theoretical study of argon valence photoionization illustrates the discovery of the broad lack of validity of the independent-particle approximation (IPA) for x-ray photoemission. In addition to previously known breakdowns of the IPA, which are limited to high photon energies and regions very near threshold, the observed breakdown in photoionization at intermediate energies demonstrates generally that the IPA is valid only in very restricted domains. These restrictions are expected to be relevant throughout the periodic table, with consequences for a wide variety of applications.

Critical Behavior Of Disordered Quantum Magnets: The Relevance Of Rare Regions, Rajesh S. Narayanan, Thomas Vojta, Dietrich Belitz, Theodore R. Kirkpatrick

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of quenched disorder on the critical properties of itinerant quantum antiferromagnets and ferromagnets are considered. Particular attention is paid to locally ordered spatial regions that are formed in the presence of quenched disorder even when the bulk system is still in the paramagnetic phase. These rare regions or local moments are reflected in the existence of spatially inhomogeneous saddle points of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson functional. We derive an effective theory that takes into account small fluctuations around all of these saddle points. The resulting free energy functional contains a new term in addition to those obtained within the conventional …

The two-dimensional patterns in our small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments from rapidly moving aerosols are anisotropic. To test the kinematic theory of two-body scattering that describes the anisotropy, we conducted SANS experiments using a constant source of D2O aerosol with droplets moving at ~440 m/s, and varied the neutron velocity from 267 to 800 m/s. The theoretically predicted anisotropy of the laboratory scattering intensities agrees well with the experimental results. Based on an analysis of the scattering intensity in the Guinier region, we also determined the particle velocity. The results are in very good agreement with independent …

Measurement Of B0-B̅0 Flavor Oscillations Using Jet-Charge And Lepton Flavor Tagging In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Oct 1999

Measurement Of B0-B̅0 Flavor Oscillations Using Jet-Charge And Lepton Flavor Tagging In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a measurement of the mass difference Δmd for the B0 meson and the statistical power of the b flavor tagging methods used. The measurement uses 90 pb-1 of data from pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV collected with the CDF detector. An inclusive lepton trigger is used to collect a large sample of B hadron semileptonic decays. The mass difference Δmd is determined from the proper time dependence of the fraction of B hadrons that undergo flavor oscillations. The flavor at decay is inferred from the charge of the lepton from semileptonic …

Conformal Actions In Any Dimension, Andre Wehner, James Thomas Wheeler Sep 1999

Conformal Actions In Any Dimension, Andre Wehner, James Thomas Wheeler

All Physics Faculty Publications

Biconformal gauging of the conformal group gives a scale-invariant volume form, permitting a single form of the action to be invariant in any dimension. We display several 2n-dimensional scale-invariant polynomial actions and a dual action. We solve the field equations for the most general action linear in the curvatures for a minimal torsion geometry. In any dimension n > 2, the solution is foliated by equivalent n-dimensional Ricci-flat Riemannian space-times, and the full 2n-dimensional space is symplectic. Two fields defined entirely on the Riemannian submanifolds completely determine the solution: a metric eμα, and …

We present the results of UV and optical Hubble Space Telescope/Faint Object Spectrograph spectroscopy of bright, extranuclear regions of line emission in the Seyfert galaxies NGC 2110 and NGC 5929. We have obtained spectra of the brightest region of the ``nuclear jet'' of NGC 2110 (75 pc from the nucleus) and of the southwest emission-line cloud of NGC 5929 (90 pc from the nucleus), in the G130H (1090-1605 Å), G190H (1570-2310 Å), G400H (3235-4780 Å), and G570H (4570-6820 Å) configurations. The observed line ratios are compared with the predictions of the two component (matter- and ionization-bounded, MB-IB), central source …

Reconstructing The Conformal Mode In Simplicial Gravity, Simon Catterall, Emil Mottola Sep 1999

Reconstructing The Conformal Mode In Simplicial Gravity, Simon Catterall, Emil Mottola

Physics - All Scholarship

We verify that summing 2D DT geometries correctly reproduces the Polyakov action for the conformal mode, including all ghost contributions, at large volumes. The Gaussian action is reproduced even for central charges greater than one lending strong support to the hypothesis that the space of all possible dyamical triangulations approximates well the space of physically distinct metrics independent of the precise nature of the matter coupling.

Neutron resonances in 103Rh have been measured for neutron energies from 30 to 2000 eV using the time-of-flight method and the (n,γ) reaction. The rhodium resonance spectroscopy is essential for the analysis of parity violation measurements recently performed on neutron resonances in 103Rh. Neutron scattering and radiative widths were determined, and orbital angular momentum assignments made with a Bayesian analysis. The s-wave and p-wave strength functions and average level spacings were determined.

Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied in p-wave neutron resonances of 103Rh in the neutron energy range 30 to 490 eV. The helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section of rhodium was determined by capture measurements with the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. A total of 32 p-wave resonances were studied and statistically significant longitudinal asymmetries were observed for resonances at En=44.5, 110.8, 321.6, and 432.9 eV. A statistical analysis treating the PNC matrix elements as random variables yields a weak spreading widthΓw=(1.42-0.59+1.21 …

Stability Of Self-Similar Solutions For Van Der Waals Driven Thin Film Rupture, Thomas P. Witelski, Andrew J. Bernoff Sep 1999

Stability Of Self-Similar Solutions For Van Der Waals Driven Thin Film Rupture, Thomas P. Witelski, Andrew J. Bernoff

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Recent studies of pinch-off of filaments and rupture in thin films have found infinite sets of first-type similarity solutions. Of these, the dynamically stable similarity solutions produce observable rupture behavior as localized, finite-time singularities in the models of the flow. In this letter we describe a systematic technique for calculating such solutions and determining their linear stability. For the problem of axisymmetric van der Waals driven rupture (recently studied by Zhang and Lister), we identify the unique stable similarity solution for point rupture of a thin film and an alternative mode of singularity formation corresponding to annular “ring rupture.”

Our previous result on the correction of the Bethe stopping power theory for heavy target elements is amended, with the application of a more consistent version of the semirelativistic Bethe sum rule worked out recently [Phys. Rev. A 57, 4994 (1998)]. This correction is found to be significant for high-Z target atoms and relatively high-energy incident particles.

Quasicoherent Nucleation Mode In Two-Phase Nanomagnets, Ralph Skomski, J. Ping Liu, David J. Sellmyer Sep 1999

Quasicoherent Nucleation Mode In Two-Phase Nanomagnets, Ralph Skomski, J. Ping Liu, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetization processes in advanced magnetic nanostructures are investigated. For the case of spherical soft or semihard grains surrounded by a very hard matrix a bulging nucleation mode is discovered. The bulging mode exhibits the radial angular symmetry of the coherent mode, but it is incoherent due to its radial variation. The radial dependence of the bulging mode is obtained by solving a spherical Bessel equation which is subject to appropriate boundary conditions. In contrast to the coherent mode, the bulging mode yields a nucleationfield coercivity which depends on the exchange stiffness and on the size of the grain. There is …

Two New Topologically Ordered Glass Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media, Brad Jacobsen, Karl Saunders, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner Aug 1999

Two New Topologically Ordered Glass Phases Of Smectics Confined In Anisotropic Random Media, Brad Jacobsen, Karl Saunders, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner

Physics

Smectics in strained aerogel exhibit two new glassy phases. The strain both ensures the stability of these phases and determines their nature. One type of strain induces an “ XY Bragg glass,” while the other creates a novel, triaxially anisotropic “ m = 1 Bragg glass.” The latter exhibits anomalous elasticity, characterized by exponents that we calculate to high precision. We predict the phase diagram, and numerous other experimentally observable scaling laws, for the system.

We have made high-accuracy measurements of the integrated Stokes parameters for resonance fluorescence from polarized electron-impact excitation of the 4p55p[5/2] 3D3 and 4p55p [5/2] 3D2 states of Kr. We report measurements in the region within 0.6 eV of threshold, which is below the first cascade threshold. We also present theoretical calculations of these Stokes parameters using a recently developed relativistic Breit-Pauli Rmatrix code. In well LS-coupled systems, nonzero values of the integrated Stokes parameter P2 signal relativistic effects (like continuum spin-orbit coupling, i.e., Mott scattering). …

Black Holes And Five-Brane Thermodynamics, Emil Martinec, Vatche Sahakian Aug 1999

Black Holes And Five-Brane Thermodynamics, Emil Martinec, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The phase diagram for Dp-branes in M theory compactified on T4,T4/Z2,T5, and T6 is constructed. As for the lower-dimensional tori considered in our previous work [E. Martinec and V. Sahakian, Phys. Rev. D 59, 124005 (1999)], the black brane phase at high entropy connects onto matrix theory at low entropy; we thus recover all known instances of matrix theory as consequences of the Maldacena conjecture. The difficulties that arise for T6 are reviewed. We also analyze the D1-D5 system on T5; we discuss its relation to matrix models …

Dust Emission From Herbig Ae/Be Stars: Evidence For Disks And Envelopes, Anatoly Miroshnichenko, Željko Ivezić, Dejan Vinković, Moshe Elitzur

Infrared and millimeter-wave emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars has produced conflicting conclusions regarding the dust geometry in these objects. We show that the compact dimensions of the millimeter-wave-emitting regions are a decisive indication for disks. But a disk cannot explain the spectral energy distribution unless it is embedded in an extended envelope that (1) dominates the IR emission and (2) provides additional disk heating on top of the direct stellar radiation. Detailed radiative transfer calculations based on the simplest model for envelope-embedded disks successfully fit the data from UV to millimeter wavelengths and show that the disks have central holes. …

Charge Dynamics In The Half-Metallic Ferromagnet Cro2, E. J. Singley, Christopher P. Weber, D. N. Basov, A. Barry, J. M. D. Coey

Physics

Infrared spectroscopy is used to investigate the electronic structure and charge carrier relaxation in crystalline films of CrO2 which is the simplest of all half-metallic ferromagnets. Chromium dioxide is a bad metal at room temperature but it has a remarkably low residual resistivity (<5 >μΩ cm) despite the small spectral weight associated with free carrier absorption. The infrared measurements show that low residual resistivity is due to the collapse of the scattering rate at ω<2000 >cm-1. The blocking of the relaxation channels at low v and T can be attributed to the unique electronic structure of a …

Evaluation Of Raman Spectroscopy And Ruby Piezospectroscopy As Tools For Investigating The Corrosion Of Metallic Alloys, Daniel P. Renusch

Dissertations

Stainless steel system components that operate in high temperature oxidizing environments obtain protection from corrosion by means of thermally grown chromia and alumina scales. Ongoing investigations of protective scales utilize a battery of experimental and theoretical techniques. A technique which has received little attention is Raman scattering. The reason for its limited use has been long data acquisition times required to obtain suitable spectra from thin surface oxides. Because advances in detection systems, namely the multichannel CCD (charge coupled devices), have recently provided dramatic improvement in the sensitivity of Raman scattering experiments, we decided to reevaluate the technique as a …

Simple Model For Linear And Nonlinear Mixing At Unstable Fluid Interfaces In Spherical Geometry, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model was recently described for predicting linear and nonlinear mixing at an unstable planar fluid interface subjected to an arbitrary time-dependent variable acceleration history [J. D. Ramshaw, Phys. Rev. E 58, 5834 (1998)]. Here we present an analogous model for describing the mixing of two adjacent spherical fluid shells of different density resulting from an arbitrary time-dependent mean interface radius R(t). As in the planar case, the model is based on a heuristic expression for the kinetic energy of the system. This expression is based on that for the kinetic energy of a linearly perturbed interface, but with …

Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Aliphatic Alcohols. Characterization Of The Hydrophobic Substrate Recognition Site, Leila Ustynyuk, Brian Bennett, Tanya Edwards, Richard C. Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Seven aliphatic and two aromatic alcohols were tested as reporters of the substrate selectivity of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). This series of alcohols was chosen to systematically probe the effect of carbon chain length, steric bulk, and inhibitor shape on the inhibition of AAP. Initially, however, the question of whether AAP is denatured in the presence of aliphatic alcohols was addressed. On the basis of circular dichroism (CD), electronic absorption, and fluorescence spectra, the secondary structure of AAP, with and without added aliphatic alcohols, was unchanged. These data clearly indicate that AAP is not denatured in aliphatic alcohols, …

The Skyrme Model For Baryons, Joseph Schechter, H. Weigel Jul 1999

The Skyrme Model For Baryons, Joseph Schechter, H. Weigel

Physics - All Scholarship

We review the Skyrme model approach which treats baryons as solitons of an effective meson theory. We start out with a historical introduction and a concise discussion of the original two flavor Skyrme model and its interpretation. Then we develop the theme, motivated by the large N_C approximation of QCD, that the {\it effective} Lagrangian of QCD is in fact one which contains just mesons of all spins. When this Lagrangian is (at least approximately) determined from the meson sector it should then yield a zero parameter description of the baryons. We next discuss the concept of chiral symmetry and …

Mechanism For A Next-To-Lowest Lying Scalar Meson Nonet, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Amir H. Fariborz

Physics - All Scholarship

Recent work suggests the existence of a non-conventional lowest-lying scalar nonet containing the a0(980). Then the a0(1450) and also the K0*(1430) are likely candidates to belong to a conventional p-wave q \bar q nonet. However a comparison of their properties with those expected on this basis reveals a number of puzzling features. It is pointed out that these puzzles can be resolved in a natural and robust way by assuming a ``bare'' conventional p-wave scalar q \bar q nonet to mix with a lighter four quark qq \bar q \bar q scalar nonet to form new ``physical'' states. The essential …
