The exclusive photoproduction of J/ψ mesons, γp → J/ψp, has been studied in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, in the kinematic range 20 < W < 290 GeV, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy. The J/ψ mesons were reconstructed in the ninon and the electron decay channels using integrated luminosities of 38 pb-1 and 55 pb-1, respectively. The helicity structure of J/ψ production shows that the hypothesis of s-channel helicity conservation is satisfied within two standard deviations. The total cross section and the differential cross-section dσ/dt, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, are presented as a function of W, for |t| < 18 Ge2. The t distribution exhibits an exponential shape with a slope parameter increasing logarithmically with W with a value b = 4.15 ± 0.05(stat.)-0.18+0.30(syst.) GeV-2 at W = 90 GeV. The effective parameters of the Pomeron trajectory are αℙ(0) = 1.200 ± 0.009(stat.) -0.010+0.004(Syst.) and α′ℙ = 0.115 ± 0.018(stat.)-0.015+0.008(syst.) GeV-2.

The first indication of nondipole effects in the azimuthal dependence of photoelectron angular distributions emitted from fixed-in-space molecules is demonstrated in N2. Comparison of the results with angular distributions observed for randomly oriented molecules and theoretical derivations for the nondipole correction first order in photon momentum suggests that higher orders will be needed to describe distributions measured in the molecular frame.

This is a progress report on our numerical simulations of conditions in the cold cores of cooling flow condensations. The physical conditions in any non-equilibrium plasma are the result of a host of microphysical processes, many involving reactions that are research areas in themselves. We review the dominant physical processes in our previously published simulations, to clarify those issues that have caused confusion in the literature. We show that conditions in the core of an X-ray-illuminated cloud are very different from those found in molecular clouds, largely because carbon remains substantially atomic and provides powerful cooling through its far infrared …

Structural and electronic properties of co-sputtered Ni-Mg thin films with varying Ni to Mg ratio were studied by in-situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the Ni L-edge and Mg K-edge regions. Co-deposition of the metals led to increased disorder and decreased coordination around Ni and Mg compared to pure metal films. Exposure of the metallic films to hydrogen resulted in formation of hydrides and increased disorder. The presence of hydrogen as a near neighbor around Mg caused a drastic reduction in the intensities of multiple scattering resonances at higher energies. The optical switching behavior and changes in the x-ray spectra varied …

A Problematic Set Of Two-Loop Self-Energy Corrections, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Jorg Evers, Christoph H. Keitel, Krzysztof Pachucki
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate a specific set of two-loop self-energy corrections involving squared decay rates and point out that their interpretation is highly problematic. The corrections cannot be interpreted as radiative energy shifts in the usual sense. Some of the problematic corrections find a natural interpretation as radiative nonresonant corrections to the natural line shape. They cannot uniquely be associated with one and only one atomic level. While the problematic corrections are rather tiny when expressed in units of frequency (a few hertz for hydrogenic P levels) and do not affect the reliability of quantum electrodynamics at the current level of experimental …

We present the results of a search in pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV for anomalous production of events containing a photon with large transverse energy and a lepton (e or m) with large transverse energy, using 86 pb-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1994–1995 collider run at the Fermilab Tevatron. The presence of large missing transverse energy (E/T), additional photons, or additional leptons in these events is also analyzed. The results are consistent with standard model expectations, with the possible exception of photon-lepton events with large E/T , …

A numerical method is presented for finding the eigenfunctions (normal modes) and mode frequencies of azimuthally symmetric non-neutral plasmas confined in a Penning trap whose axial thickness is much smaller than their radial size. The plasma may be approximated as a charged disk in this limit; the normal modes and frequencies can be found if the surface charge density profile sigma(r) of the disk and the trap bounce frequency profile wz(r) are known. The dependence of the eigenfunctions and equilibrium plasma shapes on nonideal components of the confining Penning trap fields is discussed. The results of the calculation are compared …

Electron Correlation In Double Ionization Of Excited Helium By Fast Ion Impact, L. G. Gerchikov, S. A. Sheinerman, Michael Schulz, R. Moshammer, J. Ullrich
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The correlation function between two emitted electrons has been calculated as a function of their momentum difference for double ionization of 1s2s excited He atoms by fast ion impact. A simple quantum mechanical approach is developed to take into account the dynamics of two-electron ejection as well as the effects of electron exchange and correlated electron motion in the final state. A clear difference between the correlation functions of the excited and ground state targets is reported.

Improved W Boson Mass Measurement With The Dø Detector, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
We have measured the W boson mass using the DØ detector and a data sample of 82 pb-1 from the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This measurement uses W→eν decays, where the electron is close to a boundary of a central electromagnetic calorimeter module. Such “edge” electrons have not been used in any previous DØ analysis, and represent a 14% increase in the W boson sample size. For these electrons, new response and resolution parameters are determined, and revised backgrounds and underlying event energy flow measurements are made. When the current measurement is combined with previous DØ W boson mass …

Electron-impact differential cross-section measurements for the excitation of the 2p53s configuration of Ne are reported. The Ne cross sections are obtained using experimental differential cross sections for the electron-impact excitation of the n = 2 levels of atomic hydrogen [Khakoo et al., Phys. Rev. A 61, 012701-1 (1999)], and existing experimental helium differential cross-section measurements, as calibration standards. These calibration measurements were made using the method of gas mixtures (Ne and H followed by Ne and He), in which the gas beam profiles of the mixed gases are found to be the same within our experimental errors. We present a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay Bs→μ+μ-φ in pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV, using 91 pb-1 of data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF).We find two candidate events for this decay, which are consistent with the background estimate of one event, and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of Ɓ(Bs→μ+μ-φ),6.7x10-5 at a 95% confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of this decay.
Experimental And Theoretical Study Of An Integrated Silicon Mach-Zehnder Interferometer For Chemical Sensing Applications, Yew Fong Hor
Experimental And Theoretical Study Of An Integrated Silicon Mach-Zehnder Interferometer For Chemical Sensing Applications, Yew Fong Hor

This thesis involves the design, fabrication and characterization of an integrated optical waveguide sensor. Prior to fabrication, design parameters of the waveguide need to be determined and optimized. The waveguide parameters such as waveguide dimension and the refractive index of the core and cladding are obtained from the single-mode cutoff frequency calculated using either analytical or numerical methods. In this thesis, details of analytical calculations to determine the cutoff frequency in terms of the waveguide parameters will be presented. The method discussed here is Marcatili's approximation. The purpose is to solve the scalar wave equation derived from Maxwell's equations because …
Two-Dimensional Reflectivity Polarization Elastometry Imaging Techniques (Piet) Of Soft Tissue, Hee Chuan Lim
Two-Dimensional Reflectivity Polarization Elastometry Imaging Techniques (Piet) Of Soft Tissue, Hee Chuan Lim
Dissertations
A non-invasive polarized light reflection measurement method to measure the stretch of soft tissue, such as skin, is described. The technique utilizes changes in the reflectivity of polarized light intensity as a monitor of skin stretch. Measurements on in-vitro pigskin and invivo human skin show that the reflectivity of polarized light intensity increases linearly with stretch over a range. The changes in diffusive reflectivity properties of skin result from the alterations that take place in the roughness across the thickness of the skin layers due to stretch. Conceptually, as the roughness of a layer decreases with stretch, a smoother reflecting …

The objective of this project is the design and evaluation of manufacturing processes for transmuter fuel fabrication. The large-scale deployment of remote fabrication and refabrication processes will be required for all transmutation scenarios. Current program emphasis is on a five-year effort to determine the feasibility of transmutation as a technology to limit the need for repository storage of spent commercial fuel. The evaluation of the fabrication processes will create a decision support data base to document design, operations, and costs. Fabrication processes required for different fuel types differ in terms of equipment types, throughput, and cost. Differential cost Implications of …

Warped Geometry Of Brane Worlds, Gary Felder, Andrei Frolov, Lev Kofman
Physics: Faculty Publications
We study the dynamical equations for extra-dimensional dependence of a warp factor and a bulk scalar in 5D brane world scenarios with induced brane metric of constant curvature. These equations are similar to those for the time dependence of the scale factor and a scalar field in 4D cosmology, but with the sign of the scalar field potential reversed. Based on this analogy, we introduce novel methods for studying the warped geometry. We construct the full phase portraits of the warp factor/scalar system for several examples of the bulk potential. This allows us to view the global properties of the …
Renormalized Path Integral For The Two-Dimensional Δ-Function Interaction, Horacio E. Camblong
Renormalized Path Integral For The Two-Dimensional Δ-Function Interaction, Horacio E. Camblong
Physics and Astronomy
A path-integral approach for δ-function potentials is presented. Particular attention is paid to the two-dimensional case, which illustrates the realization of a quantum anomaly for a scale-invariant problem in quantum mechanics. Our treatment is based on an infinite summation of perturbation theory that captures the nonperturbative nature of the δ-function bound state. The well-known singular character of the two-dimensional δ-function potential is dealt with by considering the renormalized path integral resulting from a variety of schemes: dimensional, momentum-cutoff, and real-space regularization. Moreover, compatibility of the bound-state and scattering sectors is shown.

To further elucidate the nature of the valence state of V ions in vanadate glasses, magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range of 5 to 300 K have been performed on a series of vanadium–strontium–borate (V2O5+SrO+B2O3) oxide glasses with V2O5 concentrations greater than 50 mol %. The magnetic susceptibility for these oxide glasses is found to consist of a temperature-independentparamagnetic contribution arising from V2O5 and a Curie–Weiss temperature-dependent contribution associated with magnetic V4+ ions being present in concentrations between 2% and 10% of the total V concentration. The negative Curie–Weiss temperatures in the range of 0 to −2.8 K indicate a …

CrO2 thin films with crystallites of a significant size permit investigation of the thin intergrain conduction between a limited numbers of crystals. Phoemission techniques reveal that the CrO2 films are covered by a 1–2-nm-thick Cr2O3 insulating barrier. The electronic band gap of the surface electrons is 3.4 eV at low temperatures, decreases sharply down to 2.8 eV at ambient. Electric transport though a few junctions in series shows a remarkable zero-bias anomaly, interpreted in terms of blockade effects. We show that the magnetoresistance is governed by low-bias blockade in these junctions. © 2002 American Institute …
Exchange-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy, Ralph Skomski
Exchange-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy, Ralph Skomski
Ralph Skomski Publications
The magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 5f transition-metal atoms (actinides) is investigated. A simple model Hamiltonian reproduces the observed huge low-temperature anisotropy of cubic actinide compounds such as US and predicts the temperature dependence of the anisotropy. The dominance of the spin–orbit and crystal–field interactions means that the magnitude of the anisotropy is limited only by interatomic exchange. One consequence is that cubic and uniaxial 4f magnets have similar magnitudes of the anisotropy and similar temperatures dependencies.

The lattice parameters and the unit cell volumes were calculated using a modified Rietveld program. The fitted intensities showed behavior related to a disordered rhombohedral structure as inferred from neutron data. It was observed that for a particular y, the unit cell volume decreased almost …

Exact Nucleation Modes In Arrays Of Magnetic Particles, Ralph Skomski
Ralph Skomski Publications
Magnetization reversal in arrays of magnetic nanoparticles with perpendicular anisotropy is investigated. Aside from domain-wall propagation effects, the reversal involves two main aspects: the nucleation behavior of individual particles and interparticle interactions. Due to magnetostatic self-interaction effects, the interparticle interaction cannot be reduced to a stray-field correction to the external field. Exact nucleation fields and explicit stray-field and self-interaction contributions are obtained for rings of equidistant dots. An exact treatment of self-interactions in various structurally inhomogeneous but rotationally symmetric wire, sphere, and thin-film nanostructures leads to renormalization of the uniaxial anisotropy. Finally, an approximate method to calculate nucleation fields is …

The Finite-Temperature Densities Of States For Half-Metallic Ferromagnets, Ralph Skomski, Peter A. Dowben

A unitary spinor transformation is used to show that the spin-down density of states (DOS) of half-metallic ferromagnets becomes nonzero at finite temperatures. In a strict sense, this thermally activated spin mixing means that half-metallic ferromagnetism is limited to zero temperature. Similar effects are created by crystal imperfections, interfaces, and surfaces. The calculations, which imply that the finite-temperature resistivity of an individual spin channel is never infinite, are used to discuss recent experimental work on half-metallic oxides and Heusler-type alloys.

We consider a toy universe containing conventional matter and an additional real scalar field, and discuss how the requirements of gauge and diffeomorphism invariance essentially single out a particular set of theories which might describe such a world at low energies. In these theories, fermion masses and g-factors, as well as the electromagnetic coupling turn to be scalar field dependent; fermion charges and the gravitational coupling might be assumed to be constant. We then proceed to study the impact of a time variation of the scalar field on measurements of atomic spectra at high redshifts. Light propagation is not affected …

We use the nonperturbative linear δ expansion method to evaluate analytically the coefficients c1 and c''2 that appear in the expansion for the transition temperature for a dilute, homogeneous, three-dimensional Bose gas given by Tc=T0(1+c1an1/3+[c′2ln(an1/3)+c''2]a2n2/3+O(a3n)), where T0 is the result for an ideal gas, a is the s-wave scattering length, and n is the number density. In a previous work the same method has been used to evaluate c1 to order δ2 with the result c1=3.06. Here, we push the calculation to the next two orders obtaining c1=2.45 at order δ3 and c1=1.48 at order δ4. Analyzing the topology …

We present exact ab initio quantum results for harmonic generation (HG) by a weakly bound electron interacting with a strong monochromatic laser field. The analytic structure of the HG amplitude resulting from the multiphoton detachment thresholds is demonstrated. Our numerical results show that the HG spectrum is sensitive primarily to the distance in energy from the thresholds, thereby opening new possibilities for control of HG.
