Measurments Of Correlated Pair Momentum Distributions In 3he(E,E'Pp)N With Clas, Rustam Niyazov
Measurments Of Correlated Pair Momentum Distributions In 3he(E,E'Pp)N With Clas, Rustam Niyazov
Physics Theses & Dissertations
We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at 2.2 and 4.4 GeV over a wide kinematic range. The kinetic energy distribution for ’fast’ nucleons (p > 250 MeV/c) peaks where two nucleons each have 20% or less and the third or ‘leading’ nucleon carries most of the transferred energy. These fast nucleon pairs (both pp and pn) are back-to-back and carry very little momentum along q, indicating that they are spectators. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that we have measured N N correlations in 3He(e,e'pp)n by striking the third nucleon and detecting the spectator correlated pair.

We investigate the asymptotic properties of higher-order binding corrections to the one-loop self-energy of excited states in atomic hydrogen. We evaluate the historically problematic A60 coefficient for all P states with principal quantum numbers n ≤ 7 and D states with n ≤ 8 and find that a satisfactory representation of the n dependence of the coefficients requires a three-parameter fit. For the high-energy contribution to A60, we find exact formulas. The results obtained are relevant for the interpretation of high-precision laser spectroscopic measurements.

Analysis Of Ingaassb/Aigaassb Photodetectors For Applications At The 2.0 Micron Wavelengths, Phani Pendyala
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The study of an InGaAsSb-based heterojunction avalanche photo detector has been carried out for 2-μm applications. A separate absorption and multiplication structure was used because it minimizes the tunneling component of the dark current in the absorption region, and also provides single-carrier injection into the multiplication region. This is a well-known requirement for reducing the multiplication noise. The primary goal was to evaluate the potential of InGaAsSb-AlGaAsSb photo-detectors for photodetection at the two-micron wavelength.
InGaAsSb is a relatively new material, and, therefore, characterization and photodetector response analysis based on this material are not available in the literature. In this thesis …

Relativistic Laser–Plasma Interactions, Donald Umstadter
Donald Umstadter Publications
By focusing petawatt peak power laser light to intensities up to 1021 Wcm−2, highly relativistic plasmas can now be studied. The force exerted by light pulses with this extreme intensity has been used to accelerate beams of electrons and protons to energies of a million volts in distances of only microns. This acceleration gradient is a thousand times greater than in radio-frequency-based accelerators. Such novel compact laser-based radiation sources have been demonstrated to have parameters that are useful for research in medicine, physics and engineering. They might also someday be used to ignite controlled thermonuclear fusion. Ultrashort …

Inclusive event-shape variables have been measured in the current region of the Breit frame for neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using an integrated luminosity of 45.0 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The variables studied included thrust, jet broadening and invariant jet mass. The kinematic range covered was 10 < Q2 < 20480 GeV2 and 6 × 10-4 < x < 0.6, where Q2 is the virtuality of the exchanged boson and x is the Bjorken variable. The Q dependence of the shape variables has been used in conjunction with NLO perturbative calculations and the Dokshitzer-Webber non-perturbative corrections ('power corrections') to investigate the validity of this approach.

The Colorado State Sodium lidar has been upgraded to a two-beam system capable of simultaneous measurement of mesopause region temperature and winds, day and night, weather permitting. This paper reports the initial result of the first campaign, conducted in April 2002, with a total of 145 hours of observation including an 80-hour continuous data acquisition of temperature and zonal wind. The contour plots of the continuous data set show considerable coherence and activities of upward propagating waves, with a maximum day-night difference of 15.5 m/s in zonal wind at 88 km and of 10 K in temperature at 92 km. …

Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were used to characterize binary nanodroplets composed of D2O and H2O. The droplets were formed by expanding dilute mixtures of condensible vapor in a N2 carrier gas through a supersonic nozzle, while maintaining the onset of condensation at a fixed position in the nozzle. It is remarkable, given the small coherent scattering length density of light water, that even the pure H2O aerosol gave a scattering signal above background. The scattering spectra were analyzed assuming a log-normal distribution of droplets. On average, the geometric radius of the nanodroplets rg was rg=13 (±1) nm, the …

The Adsorption Of Orthocarborane On Cobalt, L. Bernard, A. N. Caruso, Bo Xu, Bernard Doudin, Peter A. Dowben
Peter Dowben Publications
The adsorption of closo-1,2 dicarbadodecaborane (orthocarborane) on evaporated cobalt thin films has been investigated by combined photoemission and inverse photoemission studies. The adsorption of these icosahedral molecules does not strongly perturb the electronic structure of the underlying cobalt. As was previously observed with adsorption on Cu(100), electron induced decomposition of adsorbed orthocarborane decreases the HOMO–LUMO gap. The X-ray photoemission spectra before and after orthocarborane adsorption confirm that the interface with cobalt is abrupt. These results suggest that chemical vapor deposition, via the decomposition of orthocarborane, may be an effective method for fabricating dielectric barrier layers, without utilizing oxides. This …

Gadolinium occurs, in natural abundance, as several isotopes. The possible combinations of different gadolinium isotopes dictates that even for a fixed number of atoms in the cluster, clusters of gadolinium atoms will exhibit a range of masses. This and the expected consequence of the translation energy distributions are explored as possible corrections to Stern-Gerlach cluster beam-deflection experiments. Upon closer inspection of the experimental data, we find that the translation energy plus the vibrational temperature distribution may be inhomogeneous. This could be the origin of a long tail to high deflections in the experimental deflection profiles, at low cluster temperatures, in …
Vacuum Choices And The Predictions Of Inflation, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Eugene A. Lim
Vacuum Choices And The Predictions Of Inflation, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Eugene A. Lim
Physics - All Scholarship
In the presence of a short-distance cutoff, the choice of a vacuum state in an inflating, non-de Sitter universe is unavoidably ambiguous. The ambiguity is related to the time at which initial conditions for the mode functions are specified and to the way the expansion of the universe affects those initial conditions. In this paper we study the imprint of these uncertainties on the predictions of inflation. We parametrize the most general set of possible vacuum initial conditions by two phenomenological variables. We find that the generated power spectrum receives oscillatory corrections whose amplitude is proportional to the Hubble parameter …

Multiple Jet Production At Low Transverse Energies In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.8 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
We present data on multiple production of jets with transverse energies near 20 GeV in pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV. QCD calculations in the parton-shower approximation of PYTHIA and HERWIG and the next-to-leading order approximation of JETRAD are compared to the data for one, two, three, and four jet inclusive production. Transverse energy spectra and multiple jet angular and summed transverse-energy distributions are adequately described by the shower approximation while next-to-leading order calculations describe the data poorly.
Spacecraft Charging At Geosynchronous Altitudes: Current Balance And Critical Temperature In A Non-Maxwellian Plasma, Jose T. Harris
Spacecraft Charging At Geosynchronous Altitudes: Current Balance And Critical Temperature In A Non-Maxwellian Plasma, Jose T. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Spacecraft charging threatens to disable spacecraft components and adversely impact any satellite function. Electrostatic charge, and especially discharge, can hinder the proper operation of, or destroy, spacecraft components, thereby rendering the spacecraft ineffective or inoperative. The level of charging is dependent on the particle energy (speed) distribution. Current spacecraft design and material provide limited protection against the dangers of electrostatic discharge, and active measures such as beam emission are also employed.
Role Of The Tunneling Ray In Near-Critical-Angle Scattering By A Dielectric Sphere, James A. Lock
Role Of The Tunneling Ray In Near-Critical-Angle Scattering By A Dielectric Sphere, James A. Lock

The scattering far zone for light transmitted through a sphere following p - 1 internal reflections by a family of near-grazing incident rays is subdivided into a lit region and a shadow region. The sharpness of the ray theory transition between the lit and the shadow regions is smoothed in wave theory by radiation shed by electromagnetic surface waves. It is shown that when higher-order terms in the physical optics approximation to the phase of the partial-wave scattering amplitudes are included, the transition between the lit and the shadow regions becomes a two-ray-to-zero-ray transition, called a superweak caustic in analogy …

Phasing A Dual Optical Path System Using An Optical Fiber As A Phase Conjugate Mirror, Shawn M. Willis
Theses and Dissertations
Phase conjugation properties of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a short multimode fiber have been investigated with an eye towards its application for a multi-channel double pass master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system. In particular, properties of the SBS beam to compensate for the axial and transverse phase distortion between individual channels in a multi-channel amplifier system were studied. Two optical paths were created by covering half of the laser beam with a microscope slide, and also by spatially splitting the wavefronts with a 4 prism set-up. The Stokes beams that traversed the same optical paths as the pump beams …
Building Blocks For Time-Resolved Laser Emission In Mid-Infrared Quantum Well Lasers, Gabriel D. Mounce
Building Blocks For Time-Resolved Laser Emission In Mid-Infrared Quantum Well Lasers, Gabriel D. Mounce
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research is to improve the performance of mid-infrared semiconductor quantum-well lasers. Lasers operating in the mid-infrared are useful for many Air Force applications which include infrared (IR) countermeasures in particular. Countermeasure applications require lasers that are compact, and able to emit at high powers while operating at room temperature. Limits to power increases are seen in the transverse modal development of laser oscillation. These modes typically form in the waveguiding active region contributing to the laser output. However, competing modes outside of this region also develop when the confining structural layers have the right characteristics. These …
Effect Of Multi-Mode Vibration On Signature Estimation Using A Laser Vibration Sensor, Ngoya Pepela
Effect Of Multi-Mode Vibration On Signature Estimation Using A Laser Vibration Sensor, Ngoya Pepela
Theses and Dissertations
A laser vibration sensor (LVS) can be used to determine the vibrational spectrum of targets such as vehicles using heterodyne laser Doppler velocimetry. The vibrational spectra of exterior skin of vehicles are known to have characteristic resonances due to the physical structure driven by motor gears and other moving parts. Each particular class of vehicle has a unique vibrational spectrum. This research shows how a body vibrating in higher order modes has the opportunity to eliminate spectral content of the target's vibrational spectrum while using an LVS to perform spectrum estimation. This is due to roughly equal amounts of laser …

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) contracted for two gamma radiation detectors: mercuric iodide (HgI2) and electromechanically cooled (EMC) high purity germanium (HPGe) to support arms control inspection efforts. This project investigated whether these detectors could measure the quality and quantity of special nuclear material (SNM), particularly Pu-239 for the treaty verification mission. The project investigated two areas of detector capabilities: 1) HgI2 and HPGe detector performance necessary to characterize the quality of plutonium and the presence of shielding materials and 2) HgI2 and EMC HPGe detector performance degradation by high noise levels and EMC HPGe …
Quantum Mechanical Calculations Of Monoxides Of Silicon Carbide Molecules, John W. Roberts Jr.
Quantum Mechanical Calculations Of Monoxides Of Silicon Carbide Molecules, John W. Roberts Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Modern semiconductor devices are principally made using the element silicon. In recent years, silicon carbide (SiC), with its wide band-gap, high thermal conductivity, and radiation resistance, has shown prospects as a semiconductor material for use in high temperature and radiation environments such as jet engines and satellites. A limiting factor in the performance of many SiC semiconductor components is the presence of lattice defects formed at oxide dielectric junctions during processing. Recent theoretical work has used small quantum mechanical systems embedded in larger molecular mechanics structures to attempt to better understand SiC surfaces and bulk materials and their oxidation. This …
Disorder-Induced Rounding Of Certain Quantum Phase Transitions, Thomas Vojta
Disorder-Induced Rounding Of Certain Quantum Phase Transitions, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We study the influence of quenched disorder on quantum phase transitions in systems with overdamped dynamics. For Ising order-parameter symmetry disorder destroys the sharp phase transition by rounding because a static order parameter can develop on rare spatial regions. This leads to an exponential dependence of the order parameter on the coupling constant. At finite temperatures the static order on the rare regions is destroyed. This restores the phase transition and leads to a double exponential relation between critical temperature and coupling strength. We discuss the behavior based on Lifshitz-tail arguments and illustrate the results by simulations of a model …

The cross sections for inelastic photoproduction of J/ψ and ψ′ mesons have been measured in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 38.0 pb-1. The events were required to have 0.1 < z < 0.9 and 50 < W < 180 GeV, where z is the fraction of the incident photon energy carried by the J/ψ in the proton rest frame and W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy. The ψ′ to J/ψ cross-section ratio was measured in the range 0.55 < z < 0.9. The J/ψ data, for various ranges of transverse momentum, are compared to theoretical models incorporating colour-singlet and colour-octet matrix elements. Predictions of a next-to-leading-order colour-singlet model give a good description of the data, although there is a large normalisation uncertainty. The J/ψ helicity distribution for z > 0.4 is compared to leading-order QCD predictions.
Anomalous Commutator Algebra For Conformal Quantum Mechanics, Horacio E. Camblong
Anomalous Commutator Algebra For Conformal Quantum Mechanics, Horacio E. Camblong
Physics and Astronomy
The structure of the commutator algebra for conformal quantum mechanics is considered. Specifically, it is shown that the emergence of a dimensional scale by renormalization implies the existence of an anomaly or quantum-mechanical symmetry breaking, which is explicitly displayed at the level of the generators of the SO(2,1) conformal group. Correspondingly, the associated breakdown of the conservation of the dilation and special conformal charges is derived.

We report the results of a search for a W′ boson produced in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using a 106 pb-1 data sample recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We observe no significant excess of events above background for a W′ boson decaying to a top and bottom quark pair. Simultaneous target and projectile single ionization in 3.6 MeV u-1 C2++He collisions are considered, within a six-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo model. Analysis of the relative azimuthal angle between the two emitted electrons allows one to discriminate the ionization contribution produced by the two-centre dynamical electron-electron interaction from that due to nucleus-electron interactions. the present calculations agree well with cross section measurements recently performed in kinematically complete experiments.

We report on de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations observed in the mixed state of the organic superconductor β″–(BEDT-TTF)₂SF₅CH₂CF₂SO₃ (BEDT-TTF stands for bisethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene) utilizing the field-modulation technique and torque magnetometry. At low temperatures (30 mK), the dHvA signal persists down to 1.4 T well below the upper critical field Bc2≈3.6T. Contrary to most theoretical predictions and previous experimental findings, no additional damping of the dHvA-oscillation amplitude, but a reduced damping of the dHvA signal is found. This highly unusual effect might indicate a reduced quasiparticle scattering rate or an additional oscillatory contribution in the superconducting state.

Microscopic Theory Of Network Glasses, Randall W. Hall, Peter G. Wolynes
Collected Faculty Scholarship
A theory of the glass transition of network liquids is developed using self-consistent phonon and liquid state approaches. The dynamical transition and entropy crisis characteristic of random first-order transitions are mapped as a function of the degree of bonding and density. Using a scaling relation for a soft-core model to crudely translate the densities into temperatures, theory predicts that the ratio of the dynamical transition temperature to the laboratory transition temperature rises as the degree of bonding increases, while the Kauzmann temperature falls explaining why highly coordinated liquids are “strong” while van der Waals liquids without coordination are “fragile.”

Cold plasma theory is used to calculate the response of an ultracold neutral plasma to an applied rf field. The free oscillation of the system has a continuous spectrum and an associated damped quasimode. This quasimode dominates the driven response and is resonant in the tail of the density distribution. Recent experiments used the plasma response to an applied rf field to determine the plasma density in an expanding ultracold plasma. The comparison between experiment and theory indicates that this method accurately determines the expansion velocity and underestimates the initial plasma density by a factor of 3 in weakly collisional …

Hydrogenic Spin Quantum Computing In Silicon: A Digital Approach, A. J. Skinner, M. E. Davenport, B. E. Kane

We suggest an architecture for quantum computing with spin-pair encoded qubits in silicon. Electron-nuclear spin-pairs are controlled by a dc magnetic field and electrode-switched on and off hyperfine interaction. This digital processing is insensitive to tuning errors and easy to model. Electron shuttling between donors enables multiqubit logic. These hydrogenic spin qubits are transferable to nuclear spin-pairs, which have long coherence times, and electron spin-pairs, which are ideally suited for measurement and initialization. The architecture is scalable to a highly parallel operation.

Extended systems driven through strong disorder are modeled generically using coarse-grained degrees of freedom that interact elastically in the directions parallel to the driving force and that slip along at least one of the directions transverse to the motion. A realization of such a model is a collection of elastic channels with transverse viscous couplings. In the infinite range limit this model has a tricritical point separating a region where the depinning is continuous, in the universality class of elastic depinning, from a region where depinning is hysteretic. Many of the collective transport models discussed in the literature are special …
