Single Mode Optical Radiation Distribution And Reflectivity Calculations In Novel-Hot Electron Light Emission And Lasing In Semiconductor Heterostructures Vcsels, Ebru Şenadim Tüzemen, Yüksel Ergun

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this work, we calculate the power reflectivity in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) using a new method. In VCSELs, the stop band of the reflectivity spectrum should exhibit a dip at the lasing wavelength, which is a condition for lasing. This current approximation method gives a simple analytical expression to find the power reflectivity as a function of wavelength in the vicinity of lasing wavelength, \lambda_°. The proposed method can generally be applied to semiconductor VCSEL systems for a given lasing wavelength.

Ferromagnetism In Cr-Doped Gan: A First-Principles Calculation, G. P. Das, B. K. Rao, Puru Jena

Physics Publications

Electronic structure, energy bands, and magnetic properties of Cr-doped GaN have been calculated from first principles using a 32 atom supercell within the frame work of linearized muffin-tin orbital tight binding method and gradient-corrected density-functional theory. The coupling between Cr atoms is found to be ferromagnetic with a magnetic moment of 2.69μB at each Cr site. The magnetic moments of Ga and N sites are rather small, namely, 0.025μB and −0.025μB, respectively, yielding a total moment of 6μB per supercell. Parallel calculations done on small clusters of Cr-doped GaN also yield similar results indicating that magnetic coupling between Cr atoms …

Superionicity In Na3Po4: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Wei-Guo Yin, Jianjun Liu, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, R. W. Smith, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

Fast ionic conduction in solid Na3PO4 is studied by use of molecular dynamics simulation based on the modified Lu-Hardy approach. We obtain reasonable agreement with experiment for the structural transition and diffusion of the sodium ions. All the sodium ions are found to contribute comparably to the high ionic conductivity. The results of the simulation are discussed in terms of the relative magnitude of the two proposed transport mechanisms: percolation and paddle-wheel. It appears to us that the percolation mechanism dominates the sodium diffusion.

Extended Beg Model Of Halogenated Methanes Physisorbed On Ionic Crystals, T. E. Burns, Jr Dennison, Jason Kite

Journal Articles

The 2D dielectric phases and phase transitions of adsorbed dipolar molecules are modeled using a dilute spin-one Ising model. This model is studied in the Blume-Emery-Griffiths formalism, using a mean-field approximation, where the interaction parameters are related to system interaction energies using a unique averaging procedure. The model is applied to four halogenated methane species physisorbed on MgO(100) and NaCl(100) surfaces using previous experimental and theoretical studies to estimate the interaction energy parameters. We find that temperature- and coverage-dependent antiferroelectric to ferroelectric, coverage-dependant ferroelectric up to ferroelectric down, reentrant ferroelectric to ferroelectric, and order-disorder dipole phase transitions can occur. Phase …

Metastability Of A Gold Nanoring: Density-Functional Calculations, Q. Sun, Q. Wang, Puru Jena, R. Note, J-Z. Yu, Y. Kawazoe

Physics Publications

First-principles calculations based on gradient corrected density functional theory show that a cluster of as few as 90 gold atoms can be stabilized in a ring structure having fcc (111) motif with the binding energy/atom and interatomic distance approaching 91% and 96% of the bulk values, respectively. Although the ring structure lies 0.139eV/atom higher in energy than a polyicosahedral structure, the calculated frequencies are real. Thus under appropriate experimental conditions it may still be possible to synthesize a metastable form of gold nanoring, as found in the recent experiment.

Hydrogen Adsorption And Magnetic Behavior Of Fen And Con Clusters: Controlling The Magnetic Moment And Anisotropy One Atom At A Time, N. O. Jones, M. R. Beltran, Shiv N. Khanna, T. Baruah, M. R. Pederson

Physics Publications

Theoretical studies to investigate the effect of H absorption on the magnetic moment of small Fen and Con clusters have been carried out using gradient corrected density-functional approach. Our studies on clusters containing up to four transition metal and 2 H atoms show that the successive addition of H atoms can lead to monotonic or oscillatory change from the free cluster magnetic moment. A detailed analysis of the density of electronic states shows that the variations in the magnetic moment can be related to the location of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in the parent cluster. It is shown that …

The LORAAS instrument aboard the ARGOS satellite observes line-of-sight ultraviolet limb intensities from ionosphere and thermosphere airglow. This study uses tomographically reconstructed electron density profiles (EDPs) from the nightside emissions. The ionospheric reconstruction is performed using a two-dimensional O+ 1356Å radiative recombination forward model and discrete inverse theory. The forward model assumes a Chapman layer for the vertical electron density distribution from which h m F 2, N m F 2, and topside scale height are derived for every 90 s limb scan, which is equivalent to 5° resolution in latitude. Since ARGOS is in a near Sun-synchronous orbit, these …

In this project we examined the effect of adult age on visual word recognition by using combined reaction time (RT) and accuracy methods based on the Hick–Hyman law. This was necessary because separate Brinley analyses of RT and errors resulted in contradicting results. We report the results of a lexical decision task experiment (with 96 younger adults and 97 older adults). We transformed the error data into entropy and then predicted RT by using entropy values separately for exposure duration (thought to influence peripheral processes) and word frequency (thought to influence central processes). For exposure duration, the entropy–RT functions indicate …

Lisa Time-Delay Interferometry Zero-Signal Solution: Geometrical Properties, Massimo Tinto, Shane L. Larson

All Physics Faculty Publications

Time-delay interferometry (TDI) is the data processing technique needed for generating interferometric combinations of data measured by the multiple Doppler readouts available onboard the three Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) spacecraft. Within the space of all possible interferometric combinations TDI can generate, we have derived a specific combination that has zero response to the gravitational wave signal, and called it the zero-signal solution (ZSS). This is a two-parameter family of linear combinations of the generators of the TDI space, and its response to a gravitational wave becomes null when these two parameters coincide with the values of the angles of …

Analysis Of Photoassociation Spectra For Giant Helium Dimers, J. Léonard, A. P. Mosk, M. Walhout, P. Van Der Straten

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

A theoretical analysis was performed to interpret the spectra of long-range helium dimers produced by photoassociation in an ultracold gas of metastable helium atoms. The vibrational spectra for the purely long range molecular states was also calculated using adiabatic potentials obtained from perturbation theory. The results confirmed the lifetime of the 23P atomic state. The experimental data allowed for a test of tiny vibration-induced couplings between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom.

On 30 March 2001 in the late evening an auroral display was observed over the United States of America. The Bear Lake Observatory (BLO) magnetometer in Utah measured changes of 550 nT in less than 30 min. During the same period, BLO ionosonde measurements showed deep high-frequency radio wave absorption up to 7 MHz. BLO's GPS single-frequency receiver experienced geolocation errors of 20 m for over 3 hours. These storm signatures were also accompanied by L-band scintillation effects which approached an S4 value of 0.2, which is large for midlatitudes. Although such measurements have been have been made at …

The ionosphere is a highly dynamic medium that exhibits weather disturbances at all latitudes, longitudes, and altitudes, and these disturbances can have detrimental effects on both military and civilian systems. In an effort to mitigate the adverse effects, we are developing a physics-based data assimilation model of the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere called the Global Assimilation of Ionospheric Measurements (GAIM). GAIM will use a physics-based ionosphere-plasmasphere model and a Kalman filter as a basis for assimilating a diverse set of real-time (or near real-time) measurements. Some of the data to be assimilated include in situ density measurements from satellites, ionosonde …

Mesospheric Temperature Climatology Above Utah State University, Joshua P. Herron Jan 2004

Mesospheric Temperature Climatology Above Utah State University, Joshua P. Herron

Physics

A Rayleigh-scatter lidar has been in operation at Utah State University (41.7o N, 111.8 ° W) starting in September 1993 until the present (October 2003). The return profiles from the atmosphere have been analyzed to provide temperature measurements of the middle atmosphere from 45 to 90 km. Various methods of averaging were used to construct a temperature climatology of the region based on these observations. The data analysis algorithm has been critically analyzed to find possible sources of error, and has been compared to an independently derived technique. The resulting temperatures have been compared to other mid-latitude lidars with good …

Thermal Management, Beam Control,And Packaging Designs For High Power, Te-Yuan Chung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several novel techniques for controlling, managing and utilizing high power diode lasers are described. Low pressure water spray cooling for a high heat flux system is developed and proven to be an ideal cooling method for high power diode laser arrays. In order to enable better thermal and optical performance of diode laser arrays, a new and simple optical element, the beam control prism, is invented. It provides the ability to accomplish beam shaping and beam tilting at the same time. Several low thermal resistance diode packaging designs using beam control prisms are proposed, studied and produced. Two pump cavity …

First Determination Of The Strange And Light Quark Masses From Full Lattice Qcd, James E. Hetrick, C. Aubin

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

We compute the strange quark mass ms and the average of the u and d quark masses m̂ using full lattice QCD with three dynamical quarks combined with experimental values for the pion and kaon masses. The simulations have degenerate u and d quarks with masses mu=md≡m̂ as low as ms/8, and two different values of the lattice spacing. The bare lattice quark masses obtained are converted to the $\msbar$ scheme using perturbation theory at O(alphas). Our results are: $m_s^\msbar$(2 GeV) = 76(0)(3)(7)(0) MeV, $\hat m^\msbar$(2 GeV) = 2.8(0)(1)(3)(0) MeV and ms/m̂ = 27.4(1)(4)(0)(1), where the errors are from statistics, …

Ever since the pioneering study of Spitzer, it has been widely recognized that grains play an important role in the heating and cooling of photoionized environments. This includes the diffuse interstellar medium and H II regions, planetary nebulae and photodissociation regions. A detailed code is necessary to model grains in a photoionized medium since the interactions of grains with their environment include a host of microphysical processes. In this paper we will use the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY for this purpose. A comprehensive upgrade of the grain model has been recently incorporated into CLOUDY. One of these upgrades is the …

One- And Two-Dimensional Optical Lattices On A Chip For Quantum Computing, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Gregory P. Lafyatis, Seung-Cheol Lee, Jin-Fa Lee

Physics

We propose a way to make arrays of optical frequency dipole-force microtraps for cold atoms above a dielectric substrate. Traps are nodes in the evanescent wave fields above an optical waveguide resulting from interference of different waveguide modes. The traps have features sought in developing neutral atom based architectures for quantum computing: ∼1 mW of laser power yields very tight traps 150 nm above a waveguide with trap vibrational frequencies ∼1 MHz and vibrational ground state sizes ∼10 nm. The arrays are scalable and allow addressing of individual sites for quantum logic operations.

Nearly complete angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section have been measured using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer detector and the tagged photon beam at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The data cover photon energies between 0.5 and 3.0 GeV and center-of-mass proton scattering angles 10°–160°. The data show a persistent forward-backward angle asymmetry over the explored energy range, and are well described by the nonperturbative quark gluon string model.

The three-body photodisintegration of 3He has been measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab, using tagged photons of energies between 0.35 GeV and 1.55 GeV. The large acceptance of the spectrometer allowed us for the first time to cover a wide momentum and angular range for the two outgoing protons. Three kinematic regions dominated by either two- or three-body contributions have been distinguished and analyzed. The measured cross sections have been compared with results of a theoretical model, which, in certain kinematic ranges, have been found to be in reasonable agreement with the data.

Cross sections for e+ p neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 63.2 pb -1. The double-differential cross section, d2σ/ dxdQ2, is presented for 200 GeV2 < Q2 < 30 000 GeV2 and for 0.005 < x < 0.65. The single-differential cross sections dσ/dQ2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy are presented for Q2 > 200 GeV2. The effect of Z-boson-exchange is seen in dσ/dx measured for Q2 > 10 000 GeV2. The data presented here were combined with ZEUS e+ p neutral current data taken at √s = 300 GeV and the structure function F2em was extracted. All results agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Drift-Mobility Measurements And Mobility Edges In Disordered Silicons, Eric A. Schiff Jan 2004

Drift-Mobility Measurements And Mobility Edges In Disordered Silicons, Eric A. Schiff

Physics - All Scholarship

Published electron and hole drift-mobility measurements in hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), amorphous silicon alloys (a-SiGe:H and a-SiC:H), and microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H) are analysed in terms of the exponential bandtail trapping model. A three-parameter model was employed using an exponential bandtail width E, the band mobility μ0, and the attempt-toescape frequency ν. Low-temperature measurements indicate a value around μ0 = 1 cm2 V−1 s−1 for both the conduction and valence bands over the entire range of materials. High temperature-measurements for electrons in a-Si:H suggest a larger value of 7 cm2 V−1 s−1. These properties and those of the frequency ν are …
