Sulfhydryl-Functionalized Diarylethenes: Synthesis, Photoswitching, And Fluorescent Properties, Pramod Aryal, Jonathan Bietsch, Gowri Sankar Grandhi, Josh Choi, Guijun Wang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Sulfhydryl group (SH) plays important roles in reactions with various functional groups, especially in biologically active systems. Photoswitchable diarylethene (DAE) derivatives have demonstrated applications in many research fields. Among the many classes of diarylethene derivatives, thiol derivatives have not been extensively explored. In this study, we systematically synthesized and characterized a series of bis-thiol functionalized dithienylethene derivatives. The thiol groups in this series are attached directly to the thiophene, or through a phenyl or methylene linker. Each series incorporated both dithienyl cyclopentene and hexafluorocyclopentene bridges and total six thiol substituted diarylethenes were synthesized. Among the six sulfhydryl DAE derivatives, four …

Nonpyrogenic "Black" Nitrogen Likely Plays A Major Yet Underrecognized Role In The Global Nitrogen Cycle, João Vitor Dos Santos, Aleksandar I. Goranov, Kyle M. Lambert, Theodoro Da Rosa Salles, Susan J. Carter, Ann Pearson, Patrick G. Hatcher Jan 2026

Nonpyrogenic "Black" Nitrogen Likely Plays A Major Yet Underrecognized Role In The Global Nitrogen Cycle, João Vitor Dos Santos, Aleksandar I. Goranov, Kyle M. Lambert, Theodoro Da Rosa Salles, Susan J. Carter, Ann Pearson, Patrick G. Hatcher

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Condensed aromatic nitrogen (ConAN) is commonly found in soil and aquatic environments. ConAN is broadly viewed by the biogeochemistry community as a combustion-derived product leading to its frequent designation as pyrogenic “black” nitrogen. Here, we provide evidence that ConAN can also form through nonpyrogenic pathways. In an experiment simulating biomass oxidation, pine wood boards assembled with iron nails were exposed to 12 years of natural environmental conditions. Nitrogen concentrations increased from 0.2 to 1.2 wt % with increasing proximity to the nail. Ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry showed enrichment of nitrogen-containing compounds within the lignin and condensed aromatic domains. X-ray spectroscopic …

Land Use Influences Dissolved Organic Matter Composition In The U.S. Coastal Critical Zone Network, Aleksandar I. Goranov, Elizabeth V. Whitney, Brian R. Moyer, Katherine L. Tully, Patrick G. Hatcher, Yu-Ping Chhin

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Coastal watersheds are highly productive biogeochemical systems supporting robust coastal fisheries and contributing significantly to the marine gross primary production flux. These ecosystems are comprised of civil infrastructure, farms, forests, and marshes, and their diversity is reflected in the quantity and quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Here, we assess the role of farming in influencing DOM from surface waters of six coastal tidal creeks adjacent to forest and farm sites in the US Critical Zone Network. Molecular fingerprinting using electrospray ionization - Fourier transform - ion cyclotron resonance - mass spectrometry revealed that farm-influenced DOM was enriched in nitrogen-, …

Multidentate Surfactant-Dependent Synthesis Of Giant Iridium Superstructures, Ramjee Balasubramanian, Maeren E. Hill

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Giant superstructures of iridium, comprised of smaller spherical and slightly larger anisotropic nanoparticles, were synthesized by reducing iridium chloride in the presence of resorcinarene, a class of tetrameric macrocyclic polyphenols, with sodium borohydride in ethanol in 30 min under mild conditions. These superstructures were characterized by a range of techniques including TEM, HRTEM, EDS and other spectroscopic methods. The impact of the macrocyclic surfactant, its features and reaction conditions in dictating the formation of giant iridium superstructures was evaluated. The packing density of nanoparticles in these giant iridium superstructures could be altered qualitatively by varying the duration of the reaction, …

Pursuer Evader Surveillance Game Control Theory And Motion Planning, Zijie Mu Jan 2026

Pursuer Evader Surveillance Game Control Theory And Motion Planning, Zijie Mu

Honors Theses

This thesis studies the pursuer evader surveillance game with a triangular obstacle in the short-term. In the game, the pursuer aims to maintain surveillance of the evader as long as possible while the evader aims to break surveillance in a finite time. We classify the player strategies into ideal ones and best admissible ones. The outcome of the game is determined by line of sight. We reduce the 4D game to a 3D game with an upward motion for a small time interval to terminate the game. When the evader starts outside the threshold, we show that there exists an …

From Shock To Routine: The Evolving Impact Of Shutdown-Related Sentiment On Stock Markets, Yiran Shao Jan 2026

From Shock To Routine: The Evolving Impact Of Shutdown-Related Sentiment On Stock Markets, Yiran Shao

Honors Theses

To address gaps in existing research, this paper selects two U.S. government shutdown periods, 2018-2019 and 2025, as research samples to explore the effect of policy uncertainty on sentiment. This paper primarily analyzes the following two research questions.

First, what is the correlation between government shutdown-related sentiment during the shutdown period and daily market fluctuations? Specifically, can the sentiment index constructed from shutdown-related news effectively predict the next-day stock return during the event period?

Second, does the market have a learning effect? That is, between 2018-2019 and 2025, has the relationship between shutdown-related emotions and market outcomes weakened, shortened the …

Mathematical Model Of Graphene, Douglas M. Sanor Jan 2026

Mathematical Model Of Graphene, Douglas M. Sanor

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Graphene, a single-atom-thick layer of carbon arranged in a hexagonal lattice, exhibits exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties that make it a promising material for a wide range of engineering applications. This paper presents a mathematical framework for modeling the mechanical behavior of graphene, with a focus on atomistic-to-continuum approaches. We begin with a onedimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model that represents graphene as a discrete chain of particles interacting with both their nearest neighbors through harmonic spring potentials and an underlying substrate through van der Waals forces. Numerical simulations of this discrete model demonstrate the commensurate-toincommensurate phase transition, revealing how geometric mismatch …

Pressure Field Estimation From 2d-Piv Measurements: A Case Study Of Fish Suction-Feeding, Jensine C. Coggin, Duvall Dickerson-Evans, Erin E. Hackett, Roi Gurka Jan 2026

Pressure Field Estimation From 2d-Piv Measurements: A Case Study Of Fish Suction-Feeding, Jensine C. Coggin, Duvall Dickerson-Evans, Erin E. Hackett, Roi Gurka

Marine Science

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) flow measurements are common practice in laboratory settings in a wide variety of fields involving fluid dynamics, including biology, physics, engineering, and medicine. Dynamic fluid pressure is a notoriously difficult property to measure non-intrusively, yet its variation is a driving flow force and critical to model correctly. Techniques have been developed to estimate the pressure from velocity and velocity gradient measurements. Here, we highlight a novel application of boundary conditions when applying such pressure estimation techniques based on two-dimensional PIV data; the novel method is especially relevant to problems with complex boundary conditions. As such, it …

Investigating The Connection Between Als Through The Mutation R522s In The Rna Binding Protein, Dennia Estrella-Vargas, Lydia Uptain Jan 2026

Investigating The Connection Between Als Through The Mutation R522s In The Rna Binding Protein, Dennia Estrella-Vargas, Lydia Uptain

Mathematics

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that causes the deterioration of motor neurons , death is usually due to respiratory paralysis. The variant R522S was chosen because it is near a hot spot of pathogenic variants. It is an arginine-to-serine swap, this swap is present in pathogenic variants near the 522 position, such as R514S, R521S, R524S. Recent evidence suggests that arginine-deficiency can influence disease progression.

The Scattering Algebra Of Physical Space: Squared Massive Constructive Amplitudes, Moab Croft, Neil Christensen Jan 2026

The Scattering Algebra Of Physical Space: Squared Massive Constructive Amplitudes, Moab Croft, Neil Christensen

Faculty publications – Physics

The Algebra of Physical Space (APS) is used to explore the Constructive Standard Model (CSM) of particle physics. Namely, this paper connects the spinor formalism of the APS to massive amplitudes in the CSM. A novel equivalency between traditional CSM and APS-CSM formalisms is introduced, called the Scattering Algebra (SA), with example calculations confirming the consistency of results between both frameworks. Through this all, two significant insights are revealed: The identification of traditional CSM spin spinors with Lorentz rotors in the APS, and the connection of the CSM to various formalisms through ray spinor structure. The CSM’s results are …

Classifying Mathieu-Zhao Subspaces In Products Of Cyclic Rings, Sarah A. Huber Jan 2026

Classifying Mathieu-Zhao Subspaces In Products Of Cyclic Rings, Sarah A. Huber

Theses and Dissertations

Mathieu-Zhao subspaces are a generalization of ideals in an algebra and were introduced by Wenhua Zhao in connection to the Jacobian conjecture and its variants. These subspaces have interesting properties, and often the problem of classification is hard. In this thesis, we investigate the structure of Mathieu-Zhao subspaces of the cartesian product of integers modulo powers of a prime p, Zpr × Zps . We will give a complete classification of the subgroups, maximal subgroups, Mathieu-Zhao subspaces, and maximal Mathieu-Zhao subspaces in these rings.

Fuchs' Problem For Quasi-Cyclic Groups, Dalen F. Elliott Jan 2026

Fuchs' Problem For Quasi-Cyclic Groups, Dalen F. Elliott

Theses and Dissertations

Fuchs’ problem asks which groups can arise as the group of units of a ring. Although the finite cyclic case has been completely classified, much less is known in the infinite setting. This thesis contributes to this problem by investigating quasi-cyclic. (Pr¨ufer) groups and their finite direct products. We show that for every odd prime p, there is no commutative ring R such that R×∼= Cp∞. This obstruction arises from characteristic restrictions and the algebraic structure of finite fields. More generally, we prove that any group in which every element has order a power of an odd prime p and …

Managing Multi-Drug Resistance: An Evolutionary Game Theory And Optimal Control Approach, Shukhrat Nasrulloev Jan 2026

Managing Multi-Drug Resistance: An Evolutionary Game Theory And Optimal Control Approach, Shukhrat Nasrulloev

Theses and Dissertations

Multi-drug resistance is an evolutionary process in which treatment eliminates sensitive cells, allowing resistant clones to dominate. This thesis investigates this process using a framework integrating population dynamics, evolutionary game theory, and optimal control theory. We develop a two-population logistic growth model describing competition between drug-sensitive and drug-resistant cells under treatment, construct dose-dependent payoff matrices and replicator dynamics to characterize evolutionary competition, and derive a critical drug level Dcrit = (rS - rR)/(dS - dR) at which resistant cells gain a fitness advantage. An optimal control problem is formulated via Pontryagin's Maximum Principle to identify schedules …

Data-Driven Partitioning In Distributed Optimization For Networked Systems, Prosper Azameti Jan 2026

Data-Driven Partitioning In Distributed Optimization For Networked Systems, Prosper Azameti

Theses and Dissertations

The convergence behavior of distributed optimal power flow (OPF) depends strongly on how the power network is partitioned into regions. Classical graph-based methods such as METIS are widely used, but they rely mainly on static topological criteria and do not explicitly incorporate operating-point-dependent information that may affect distributed optimization performance. This thesis develops a data-driven partitioning framework for distributed OPF using graph neural networks (GNNs). Each OPF scenario is represented as a graph in which buses are nodes and transmission lines are edges. Node and edge features capture both structural and operational characteristics of the network. Partition prediction is formulated …

This chapter explores key components for designing effective Human-AI Collaboration (HAC) in K–12 education, addressing the current lack of theoretical and conceptual frameworks for structuring and implementing HAC in teaching and learning. It examines four essential areas: curriculum design, student and teacher–AI interaction, learning environments, and the evolution of HAC over time. The chapter introduces the concept of HAC in K–12 contexts, highlighting how humans and AI can leverage each other's strengths through co-evolutionary processes that foster mutual learning and collaboration. It reviews current HAC practices in schools and discusses their contributions to both teaching and learning. Finally, it presents …

Decomposing Shadow Prices Under Climate-Driven Growth Scenarios: Insights From An Elk Herd Case Study, Ranjit Bawa, Drew Bennett, Wai Yan Siu, Bailey Kirkland, David Finnoff, Jacob Hochard Jan 2026

Decomposing Shadow Prices Under Climate-Driven Growth Scenarios: Insights From An Elk Herd Case Study, Ranjit Bawa, Drew Bennett, Wai Yan Siu, Bailey Kirkland, David Finnoff, Jacob Hochard

ODU Articles

Natural capital accounting provides a framework for integrating ecological processes with economic valuation, but the mechanics of shadow price formation often remain opaque to resource managers and policymakers. Using the Clarks Fork elk herd in northwestern Wyoming as a case study, we decompose the shadow price of natural capital into its ecological, economic, and institutional components. Population dynamics are estimated using a linearized Ricker model and projected forward using a logistic projection, incorporating climate-driven reductions in intrinsic growth rates. These ecological scenarios are linked to a shadow pricing formulation that explicitly accounts for marginal benefits, harvest policy responses, discounting, and …

Agricultural Productivity Under Energy Development: Insights From California, Wai Yan Siu, Sherzod B. Akhundjanov Jan 2026

Agricultural Productivity Under Energy Development: Insights From California, Wai Yan Siu, Sherzod B. Akhundjanov

ODU Articles

This paper examines how agricultural productivity patterns in Kern County, California, a leading region for both agricultural production and oil and gas development, co-vary with the spatial and temporal expansion of hydraulic fracturing and associated energy infrastructure. Using parcel- and county-level analyses, we characterize how agricultural productivity differs across proximity to energy development and across spatial scales. The results reveal spatially heterogeneous and scale-dependent patterns: parcel-level evidence indicates lower Enhanced Vegetation Index-based vegetation productivity within the 20-mile proximity zone around fracking wells, while county-level results show heterogeneous crop-specific yield changes during the post-expansion period. Together, these findings highlight the importance …

Characterizing A Low-Gradient Stream In Central Illinois As Gaining Or Losing And Observing Seasonal Changes In This Behavior, Eric Timothy Brunner Jan 2026

Characterizing A Low-Gradient Stream In Central Illinois As Gaining Or Losing And Observing Seasonal Changes In This Behavior, Eric Timothy Brunner

Theses and Dissertations

While the seasonal behaviors of low-gradient streams have been studied, the behavior of surface water and groundwater interactions within low-gradient streams in glaciated terrain is not fully understood. A third order, low-gradient glacial stream with a saturated riparian buffer in central Illinois was studied to determine the direction of flow between the surface water and groundwater. The goals of this study were to determine 1) whether the stream was gaining or losing water, and 2) whether the gaining or losing nature of the stream-aquifer system changes seasonally. At both an upgradient and downgradient location, two wells were installed: one in …

Symmetry In Latin Hypercubes, Levi Neiburger Jan 2026

Symmetry In Latin Hypercubes, Levi Neiburger

Theses and Dissertations

Let [n] = {1, ..., n}. A hypercube H of order n and dimension d is a d-dimensional array whose nᵈ cells are indexed by [n]ᵈ. A hyperplane in H is obtained by fixing one coordinate, while allowing the remaining d–1 coordinates to vary. We wish to color each cell of H from a palette of nd-1 colors such that each hyperplane is polychromatic.

Our main result is the following. Let n be sufficiently large. There exists a symmetric coloring of the d-dimensional hypercubes of order n whose all hyperplanes are polychromatic if and only if: …

Data Defines Success: Algorithm For Dataset Quality Assessment In Deep Learning For Malware Detection, Matei Ionescu Jan 2026

Data Defines Success: Algorithm For Dataset Quality Assessment In Deep Learning For Malware Detection, Matei Ionescu

Theses and Dissertations

The field of artificial intelligence is based upon the premise of constructing architectures through which to propagate training data. However, the majority of existing research literature is focused on architecture. While necessary, the attention devoted to the architecture should not so precipitously exceed that of the data. It should be noted that this disparity is not without reasonable cause. Data quality is often exceedingly difficult to verify due to particularities of the field or subfield; LLM repositories of text are distinct from image recognition pictures of dog breeds which are distinct from EEG waveforms of human brains which are distinct …

Front crawl swimming stroke phase segmentation has historically relied on video analysis, but the development of wearable sensor technology has created new opportunities for automated phase segmentation. This scoping review mapped the available evidence on wearable sensor-based stroke phase segmentation methods in front crawl swimming, following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A systematic search of SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore conducted from January to June 2026, identified 15 eligible peer-reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2024. The review revealed an emerging field of research that has converged methodologically around inertial measurement units (IMUs) and the Chollet phase segmentation framework while remaining …

Scope Of Microbial Transglutaminase For Site-Specific And Oriented Immobilization Of Native Antibodies From Various Host Species, Emily Beitello, Kwame Osei, Faith E. Breausche, Jon A. Friesen, Jeremy D. Driskell Jan 2026

Scope Of Microbial Transglutaminase For Site-Specific And Oriented Immobilization Of Native Antibodies From Various Host Species, Emily Beitello, Kwame Osei, Faith E. Breausche, Jon A. Friesen, Jeremy D. Driskell

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Modification of antibodies to chemically couple labels or immobilization reagents is essential for developing biosensors. Typically, conjugation occurs through chemical methods that leverage reactive amines and thiols on native antibodies; however, this nonspecific approach can interfere with antibody function. Microbial transglutaminase (mTG) is an enzyme that has been used for site-specific conjugation of chemical modifiers to the Fc region of native antibodies, but thus far mTG-mediated conjugation has been limited to production of antibody-drug conjugates with human IgGs. Here, we assessed the scope and versatility of mTG to target IgGs, with the goal of site-specific conjugation to facilitate oriented …

Towards Novel Porphyrinoid Architectures: Synthesis Of Porphyrin Analogues With Two Six-Membered Exocyclic Rings, Amy L. Le, Timothy D. Lash

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Tripyrranes with terminal ester protective groups were prepared by reacting 7-acetoxy-4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindoles with 3,4-diethylpyrrole in refluxing acetic acid-ethanol. Dibenzyl esters were deprotected by hydrogenolysis over 10% Pd/C and the resulting dicarboxylic acids were condensed with a series of dialdehydes in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid, followed by oxidation with FeCl3 or DDQ, to give porphyrinoid products with two six-membered exocyclic rings. Reactions with a pyrrole dialdehyde gave porphyrins in 27-30% yield and good yields were also obtained using 2,5-furandicarbaldehyde and 4-hydroxy-2,6-pyridinedicarbaldehyde to prepare oxaporphyrins and oxypyriporphyrins. However, poorer results were noted for thiaporphyrins, benzocarbaporphyrins and oxybenziporphyrins due to their poor …

Amorphous Selenium Photodetectors For Liquid Noble Detectors, Michael Rooks

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Physics offers a way to connect deeply with the mysteries that surround us. Advances in detector physics, particularly in neutrino experiments and rare-event searches, have expanded our ability to probe phenomena that challenge how we describe the universe. Each discovery brings us closer to understanding the unknown, returning us to a sense of wonder that motivates exploration. My work on detector technology was inspired by a concept paper from Professor David Nygren, in which he noted the speculative possibility of integrating photon detection into a charge readout for pixelated liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) using the photoconductor amorphous selenium …

Tackling The Societal And Regulatory Challenges Of Emerging Technologies: A Case Study Of Deepfake, Jingyao Li Jan 2026

Tackling The Societal And Regulatory Challenges Of Emerging Technologies: A Case Study Of Deepfake, Jingyao Li

2026

Governing emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) poses enduring challenges for policymakers, industries, and societies. Early-stage governance is often hindered by limited understanding of technological implications, rapid innovation cycles, and resistance from powerful industry actors who favor minimal oversight. Yet, timely and effective governance is essential, as new technologies are most malleable in their formative stages. This dissertation examines how emerging technologies can be governed effectively by using deepfakes technology as a focal case. This dissertation comprises three interrelated studies.

The first paper reviews the literature on deepfakes and emerging technology governance, identifying the distinct characteristics of deepfake technology …

Do Developers Read Type Information? An Eye-Tracking Study On Typescript, Samuel W. Flint, Robert Dyer, Bonita Sharif Jan 2026

Do Developers Read Type Information? An Eye-Tracking Study On Typescript, Samuel W. Flint, Robert Dyer, Bonita Sharif

Research & Publications

Statically-annotated types have been shown to aid developers in a number of programming tasks, and this benefit holds true even when static type checking is not used. It is hypothesized that this is because developers use type annotations as in-code documentation. In this study, we aim to provide evidence that developers use type annotations as in-code documentation. Understanding this hypothesized use will help to understand how, and in what contexts, developers use type information; additionally, it may help to design better development tools and inform educational decisions. To provide this evidence, we conduct an eye tracking study with 26 undergraduate …

Neighborhood Embeddings And Scalable Learning For Optimal Transport And Unbalanced Optimal Transport, Muhammad S. Rana Jan 2026

Neighborhood Embeddings And Scalable Learning For Optimal Transport And Unbalanced Optimal Transport, Muhammad S. Rana

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Dimensionality reduction techniques are developed from the assumption that high-dimensional data often arises from low-dimensional structures embedded into the high-dimensional ambient space. Classical dimensionality reduction methods rely on the Euclidean distance, which may fail to capture the geometric structures of the datasets. This dissertation includes alternative metrics for dimensionality reduction techniques and challenges in applying these techniques.

First, we investigate the Wasserstein distance based neighbor embeddings for dimensionality reduction methods and compare the classification and clustering performance with the classical Euclidean based methods. The Wasserstein distance models the data as probability distributions and compares two distributions applying optimal transport (OT) …

Exploratory Investigation Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Natural And Restored Salt Marsh, Sophia Motta Jan 2026

Exploratory Investigation Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Natural And Restored Salt Marsh, Sophia Motta

Open Access Master's Theses

Coastal wetlands are typically considered greenhouse sinks, specifically playing an important role in the global carbon cycle (Chmura et al., 2003), but new studies have pointed to anthropogenic interference leading to the understanding that altered tidal salt marshes may also be producers of methane to the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect. Hydrologic alteration including due to sea level rise (SLR), peat subsidence, impounded water, and decreased accretion rate disruption can have negative effects on marsh biochemistry leading to potential changes in electron acceptor availability, redox gradient shifts, and microbial community structure within the environment. This research is intended to …
