We report on the measurements of the double-spin asymmetry from electron-³He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of ³He for 4-momentum transfer values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)². The measurement was done at Jefferson Lab using a polarized ³He target with its spin aligned parallel to the beam direction. This asymmetry is sensitive to a combination of spin-dependent response functions not previously measured and may highlight differences in two body forces, meson-exchange currents and final-state interactions. The results of this measurement serve as a test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with …
On The Contribution Of The Gulf Stream To High Frequency Coastal Sea Level Variability, Tal Ezer
On The Contribution Of The Gulf Stream To High Frequency Coastal Sea Level Variability, Tal Ezer
CCPO Publications
Long-term Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream (GS) variability were linked in past studies to coastal sea level (CSL) change along the U.S. East Coast - a weakening GS can lead to rise in CSL and increased coastal flooding. However, high frequency variability (HFV) in CSL is, in most cases, attributed to atmospheric weather events. This study is focused on HFV (intraseasonal variations with periods between similar to 1 week and similar to 2 months) in the GS and in CSL. First, wavelet and spectral analysis of observations of the Florida Current transport and CSL characterized the HFV in the data, …

Ecological feedbacks are fundamental features of the Earth system, affecting physical processes and chemical cycles. Our understanding of the interactions underlying these feedbacks at different spatial and temporal scales and the extent to which feedbacks affect Earth system functioning remains limited. Climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are already negatively affecting ecological processes in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. These will most likely be amplified in the coming decades under our current warming and socioeconomic pathways. The knock-on impacts on ecological feedbacks have the potential to cause rapid perturbations to the Earth system, and may significantly impact the structure and …

The challenge of protecting marine ecosystems, including biodiversity and manifold interactions in changing environments, has encouraged development of end-to-end models linking physical drivers through entire food webs to upper-level predators. Ideally such models should have temporal and spatial resolution adequate to capture important small-scale processes, while including scales large enough to encompass local food webs and movements of wide-ranging consumers. The need for component submodels to be manipulated and upgraded independently by scientists from different disciplines, and used selectively depending on questions addressed, favors modular structure allowing linkage of different submodels with varying strengths and weaknesses. As an example, this …

Several water masses circulate under the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS), the largest ice shelf in Antarctica, each causing basal melting with a specific spatio-temporal pattern. To investigate these patterns and their variability, we applied a mixing ratio analysis to simulated water masses from a new numerical ocean model of the Ross Sea. The simulation, which was run over 26 years (1993–2018) and which includes the RIS cavity, shows good agreement with seaborne and mooring observations. The total RIS basal melt rate is 90 Gt/yr on average, and is caused mostly by High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW) (68%), which enters the …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in everyday consumption, yet evidence on its longer-term implications for consumer eudaimonic well-being remains dispersed across disciplines and application contexts. This review integrates that literature to clarify the domains, theoretical explanations, and conditions through which AI shapes consumer well-being. Following PRISMA and SPAR-4-SLR procedures, we reviewed research published from January 2010 to January 2026. From 6058 records, 480 studies across psychology, business, and human-technology interaction met the inclusion criteria. The evidence is organised through psychological, social, and technological perspectives and identifies six interconnected domains: mental health, cognitive development, physical health, personal growth, autonomy and …

A Comparative Evaluation Of Data Imbalance Handling Techniques In Machine Learning Models For One-Year Mortality Prediction In Liver Cirrhosis, Sumiya Hasan Trisha
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Liver cirrhosis is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality, making one-year mortality prediction a clinically relevant problem. Using a liver cirrhosis dataset as the motivating application, this thesis evaluates five machine learning classifiers—Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost—under five class-imbalance handling strategies: Baseline learning, Random Oversampling, SMOTE-NC, ADASYN, and Cost-Sensitive Learning. Hyperparameter tuning was conducted using randomized search, and predictive performance was assessed over 200 iterations of Monte Carlo Cross-Validation using Accuracy, Precision, Recall, Fl-score, and ROC-AUC.
The results suggest that imbalance-handling strategies can materially affect predictive performance, particularly recall. Because the outcome of interest is death within …
Variance Shrinkage In Dunnett-Type Multiple Comparisons With Missing Data, Md Habibullah
Variance Shrinkage In Dunnett-Type Multiple Comparisons With Missing Data, Md Habibullah
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dunnett’s procedure is widely used for comparing multiple treatments with a control, but its application becomes challenging in the presence of missing data and multiple com- parisons. An improved Dunnett-type procedure addresses this by using multiple imputation under Rubin’s framework and constructing unified confidence intervals based on a multi- variate t distribution, allowing valid simultaneous inference while controlling the family-wise error rate (FWER). This work further extends the method by incorporating shrinkage-based variance estimation. Specifically, individual group variances are shrunk toward a common value to improve stability. This approach is particularly effective when group variances are similar or moderately different, …
Two-Stage Response-Adaptive Randomization Designs For Multi-Arm Trials With Normal Outcome, Tanjin Tamanna Happy
Two-Stage Response-Adaptive Randomization Designs For Multi-Arm Trials With Normal Outcome, Tanjin Tamanna Happy
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on improving how clinical trials compare new treatments with a standard treatment, when the response is quantitative (normally distributed). In a common two-stage design, several new treatments are first evaluated, and the best-performing one is selected if it appears better than the standard. In the second stage, this selected treatment is compared again with the standard using additional data to confirm its effectiveness. This approach is known to be efficient in terms of accuracy and sample size savings. We extend this design by introducing an adaptive method for assigning patients to treatments in the second stage. Instead …
A Stability Analysis Of The Phase-Lock Equations, Brian M. Sunguza
A Stability Analysis Of The Phase-Lock Equations, Brian M. Sunguza
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ginzburg and Landau have provided a set of equations that relate superconductivity to magnetic fields. Through a transformation process, Zhan has derived what are now called the phase-lock equations. A stability analysis of the spatially-independent phase-lock equations is the purpose of this presentation. This simplification is significant since it allowed for the analytical determination of equilibria, their stability, and the influence of a periodic forcing function. Through the use of an original code, numerical simulations are shown to corroborate the analytical results described above.
This analysis includes novel Lyapunov functions that allowed for the analytical determination of the instability region. …

Large blooms of the diazotrophic cyanobacteria, Trichodesmium, have been re-ported along the north coast of Australia and are readily evident in remote sensing images. During a research cruise in November 1999, we sampled from Townsville to Broome, examined Trichodesmium population densities and their rates of carbon and N₂ fixation alongside microscopy-based cell counts of them and other cyanobacte-rial diazotrophs. Additionally, we also enumerated the picophytoplankton community using flow-cytometry, measured bulk chlorophyll concentrations, carbon and N₂ fixation rates, and water column hydrography, enabling comparison of diazotrophic and picophytoplankton functional groups across the system. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering analysis of physicochemical oceanographic …
Quantum Critical Behavior Of Diluted Quasi-One-Dimensional Ising Chains, Logan Sowadski, Thomas Vojta
Quantum Critical Behavior Of Diluted Quasi-One-Dimensional Ising Chains, Logan Sowadski, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
(Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) is a unique magnetic material. It features bulk 3D magnetic order at low temperatures, but its quantum critical behavior in a magnetic field is well described by the 1D transverse-field Ising universality class. This behavior is facilitated by the structural arrangement of magnetic (Formula presented.) ions in nearly isolated zig-zag chains. In this work, we investigate the effect of random site dilution on the critical properties of such a quasi-1D quantum Ising system. To this end, we introduce an anisotropic site-diluted 3D transverse-field Ising model. We find that site dilution leads to unconventional activated scaling behavior …

Differential Growth Dynamics Of Common Salt Marsh Species Spartina Alterniflora And Juncus Roemerianus Under Varied Sediment Amendments, Caitlin Hemphill, Richard P. Hale, Erik S. Yando
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Introduction
Many coastal wetlands are at high risk of degradation or loss due to sea‐level rise. Restoration techniques for maintaining coastal marshes are paramount, with thin‐layer placement (TLP) emerging as one feasible solution. Despite TLP's utilization, additional research is needed on species‐ and sediment‐specific responses.
Objectives
Our research combines greenhouse and field experimentation to test species and sediment composition responses aimed at maximizing vegetation while maintaining increased elevation.
Methods
The greenhouse experiment used two common marsh plants, Spartina alterniflora and Juncus roemarianus. Five centimeters of sediment (mud, sand, and sand/mud mix) was added, and subsequent sediment and vegetation metrics …
Investigating The Effects Of Pressure On Fe And Co Intercalated 2h-Tas2 Through First-Principle Calculations, Ronald E. Putnam Jr.
Investigating The Effects Of Pressure On Fe And Co Intercalated 2h-Tas2 Through First-Principle Calculations, Ronald E. Putnam Jr.
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Using first-principles methods, we investigate the effects of applied isotropic pressure on the electronic and magnetic properties of intercalated Fe1/3TaS2 and Co1/3TaS2. Fe1/3TaS2 has been shown to be a ferromagnet that undergoes structural and magnetic phase transitions under applied pressure. The magnetic phase transitions are observed to be linked to the structural shift, and a mixture of magnetic phase states is present between 3 GPa and 6 GPa. Co1/3TaS2 was found to be antiferromagnetic, as confirmed by experimental work. One- and two-unit-cell systems of Co1/3TaS2 are analyzed, both showing band splitting that disappears under pressure. The application of pressure forces …

Global Characterization Of Stratospheric Sulfate Aerosols By The Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (Ace), Peter Bernath, Manish Bhusal, Michael Lecours, Chris Boone
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Stratospheric sulfate aerosol (SSA) is an important part of the Earth's climate system. SSA climate impact is determined in part by particle composition, which has been measured from orbit. The weight percent of sulfuric acid in SSA has been determined from atmospheric infrared transmittance spectra recorded with the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) in limb geometry using the Sun as a light source (solar occultation). The global average SSA composition varies from about 50 to 80 percent with lowest values during the Antarctic winter. Atmospheric extinction at a wavelength of 1 μm was included in the analysis to …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
An updated Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer infrared solar spectrum has been produced from low-Earth orbit covering 1829-4440 cm-¹ (2.252-5.467 mu m). Spectroscopic constants for the v = 4 and v = 5 vibrational levels of the X²Π state of CH radical have been updated by incorporating additional vibration-rotation lines from the new solar spectrum and from an archival laboratory spectrum. New ab initio calculations of the permanent dipole moment function for the X²Π state were performed with the MOLPRO quantum chemistry package using the internally contracted multireference configuration interaction method. This dipole moment function, along with …

Bayesian optimal experimental design (BOED) seeks to maximize the expected information gain (EIG) of experiments. This requires a likelihood estimate, which in many settings is intractable. Simulation-based inference (SBI) provides powerful tools for this regime. However, existing work explicitly connecting SBI and BOED is restricted to a single contrastive EIG bound. We show that the EIG admits multiple formulations which can directly leverage modern SBI density estimators, encompassing neural posterior, likelihood, and ratio estimation. Building on this perspective, we define a novel EIG estimator using neural likelihood estimation. Further, we identify optimization as a key bottleneck of gradient based EIG …

Ideational Behavior And Occupational Identity Achievement: A Study Of Emerging Adult College Students Preceding Entry Into The Fouth Industrial Revolution Workforce, Carrington M. Faulk, Michael F. Kosloski, Philip Reed
Marketing Faculty Publications
As emerging adults transition into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) workforce, it is essential to understand the factors that predict successful occupational identity achievement, as automation will impact human occupational identity crises. This descriptive cross-sectional study employed a correlational design to determine the degree to which ideational behavior predicts occupational identity achievement prior to entry into the 4IR workforce. Using a sample of 166 emerging adult college students from a Mid-Atlantic, diverse, four-year university, data were collected using Runco's Ideational Behavior Scale (RIBS) and Melgosa's Occupational Identity Achievement subscale (OIA). Results showed that ideational behavior significantly predicted occupational identity achievement …

Problem
The overlap and lack of clear distinction among the constructs of math anxiety, math self-concept, and math self-efficacy presents issues for research and practice. The literature reveals that math anxiety is closely linked to math self-concept (Klee et al., 2022). Additionally, math self-concept and math self-efficacy often overlap and are not easily distinguishable (Kranzler & Pajares, 1997; Pajares & Miller, 1994; Pajares & Urdan, 1996). Each of these constructs has been shown to play a critical role in student math achievement (Timmerman et al., 2016). -- When constructs are not defined or measured distinctly, inconsistencies may emerge in research …
Llm-Assisted Legal Propositions Identification From Party Arguments In The U.S. Supreme Court Briefs, Heng Zheng, Alex Zhang
Llm-Assisted Legal Propositions Identification From Party Arguments In The U.S. Supreme Court Briefs, Heng Zheng, Alex Zhang
Faculty Scholarship
Merits briefs are central to U.S. litigation, serving as the primary means for parties to present arguments and persuade judges. Legal propositions in these merits briefs are the atomic units of arguments, whose relationships evolve throughout litigation and inform court decisions and precedent. Large language models (LLMs) have been applied to legal document review, but there is limited evidence on their ability to identify legal propositions in merits briefs. Given the labor-intensive nature of the task, we evaluate a human-AI collaborative approach to identifying legal propositions in the U.S. Supreme Court merits briefs, in which legal annotators review and revise …

Integrative Approaches And Data Analysis For Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Data, Teng Long
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations
The rapid growth of single-cell RNA sequencing and transcriptomic datasets has created major computational challenges in causal discovery, representation learning, and biologically faithful data generation. To address these challenges, this dissertation presents three complementary deep learning frameworks for the analysis and modeling of transcriptomic data. Together, these methods form an integrative computational toolkit for understanding complex biological systems from high-dimensional and heterogeneous gene expression data.
First, this dissertation introduces DAG-VAERL, a causal discovery framework that integrates variational autoencoders, graph neural networks, reinforcement learning, and attention mechanisms to infer directed acyclic graphs for gene regulatory network analysis. DAG-VAERL improves causal structure …

Data-Driven Climate Damage Functions For Capital Formation: Estimating The Climate Penalty Using Maching Learning, Pramudya Wicaksono
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Traditional integrated assessment models assume parametric climate damage functions that may miss nonlinearities, heterogeneity, and dynamic effects on investment. This thesis develops a data-driven climate damage function for capital formation by estimating the predictive relationship between climate conditions and future gross fixed capital formation (% GDP) across 125 countries over 1982–2019. We construct a panel dataset by combining daily ERA5 climate reanalysis data (accessed via the Copernicus Climate Data Store API and aggregated to yearly country-level variables including temperature anomalies, extreme heat days, frost days, precipitation, and solar radiation) with economic indicators from the World Bank World Development Indicators and …

Pull-Out Performance Of Multiple Glued-In Rods In Sustainable Inorganic-Bonded Bamboo Composite Under Perpendicular-To-Grain Loading, Jing Ru Yao, Shaohua Yu, Qingxia Yue, Hanshu Zhang, Ernian Zhao
Physics and Engineering Science
As a sustainable bio-based material derived from bamboo crops, inorganic-bonded bamboo composite (InorgBam) exhibits excellent environmental sustainability, fire resistance, and long-term durability. To enable its broader adoption in structural applications, robust and efficient connection methods are essential. Glued-in rod (GiR) connections, characterized by high strength, stiffness, and superior fire performance, are especially well-suited for modern engineered bamboo and timber connections. The pull-out behavior of multiple GiRs in InorgBam material under perpendicular-to-grain loading was experimentally investigated using double-, triple-, and quadruple-rod specimens. The influence of anchorage length and spacing on failure modes and load-carrying capacity was systematically analyzed. Results demonstrate that …

A Novel Simulation Framework To Estimate Dynamic Response Of A Solar Panel Array Under Stationary Stochastic Wind Loads, Hanshu Zhang, You Jia Li, Matthew J. Dejong
Physics and Engineering Science
This paper presents a novel simulation framework for estimating the dynamic response of a full-scale ground-mounted solar panel array under stationary wind loads that are spatially correlated across the length of the solar panel array. Specifically, the framework uses mean pressure coefficient distributions along the length of a 1:10 prototype scale of the solar panel array from smooth inflow derived using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation software The Wind Engineering with Uncertainty Quantification (WE-UQ). Note that for the CFD simulation, the input wind field across the length of the solar panel array is uniform along the horizontal direction, and …
Using Provided Guided Notes In Coordinated Introductory First-Year Mathematics Courses, Jennifer L. Huber
Using Provided Guided Notes In Coordinated Introductory First-Year Mathematics Courses, Jennifer L. Huber
Mathematics Dissertations
The goal of this study is to investigate how standardized guided notes shape instructional practices and student engagement in coordinated introductory first-year college mathematics courses at a large public university. The researcher explored three multi-section introductory mathematics courses with overlapping learning objectives. Each course required students to purchase a student workbook as part of the instructional materials for the class. The instructors taught primarily from the workbook containing guided notes created by a former coordinator of the course. The researcher used a mixed-methods approach. Instructors and students participated in surveys, class observations and provided class meeting notes. Instructors shared additional …

Strong statistical voice is defined as the ability to advocate and negotiate for good and ethical statistical practices, including integrating and resolving differing scientific approaches. This skill is crucial for biostatisticians who work on biomedical research teams, as it ensures the integrity and accuracy of statistical analyses and fosters productive collaborations with non-statisticians. Despite its importance, new graduates often lack targeted training opportunities. This manuscript presents a scalable training approach through the development of online videos. Preliminary didactic materials focused on two key applications: providing written comments on manuscripts and engaging in study design discussions. To evaluate this training approach, …

Preliminary Observations From The Relativistic Electron Atmospheric Loss (Real) Satellite Mission, Evzen Selvon, Robyn Millan
Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters
The Relativistic Electron Atmospheric Loss (REAL) spacecraft (launched in July 2025) is a 3U cubesat designed to measure the precise energies (1 keV – 2MeV) and pitch angles of electrons entering the Earth’s ionosphere. The mission involves Dartmouth, BU, JHUAPL, MSU, and NASA. REAL carries three particle sensors measuring low, medium, and high energies. This work is focused on the ElectroStatic Analyzer (ESA) instrument, designed to measure lower energy electrons (1-40 keV) in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the Earth’s magnetic field. This research aims to identify notable events observed by the REAL spacecraft for future analysis.

Forecasting exchange-rate movements is a challenging task because currency prices are influenced not only by macroeconomic and financial variables but also by market sentiment reflected in financial news. This thesis examines whether financial news headlines can be used to predict the next-day directional movement of the EUR/USD exchange rate by applying finance-specific natural language processing and machine learning techniques.
The study uses a dataset of approximately 466,000 finance-related English-language news headlines collected between 2021 and 2025, aligned with daily EUR/USD closing prices. After preprocessing and temporal alignment, the data are used to construct a binary classification task in which the …
