Image-Derived 3d Hepatic Lobule Modeling Of Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity, Rebecca Lauren Strauss Jan 2026

Image-Derived 3d Hepatic Lobule Modeling Of Acetaminophen-Induced Hepatotoxicity, Rebecca Lauren Strauss

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

The liver’s highly structured vascular microarchitecture governs blood perfusion, metabolic zonation, and the spatial distribution of xenobiotic toxicity. Current computational models of hepatic drug metabolism often oversimplify this geometry, limiting their ability to capture realistic flow dynamics and cellular injury patterns. This study develops a multiscale computational framework to predict acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity using image-derived, three-dimensional hepatic lobule geometries. The model integrates computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with a mechanistic cellular injury module to simulate the interplay between perfusion, metabolism, and hepatocellular viability.

Realistic vascular reconstruction was achieved from histopathology liver slices, and the resulting geometry was meshed and solved using ANSYS …

Deep Learning For Eeg-Based Emotion Recognition With Temporal And Spectral Interpretability, Shruti Rameshbhai Shingala Jan 2026

Deep Learning For Eeg-Based Emotion Recognition With Temporal And Spectral Interpretability, Shruti Rameshbhai Shingala

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition has emerged as a critical component of affective computing and clinical neuroscience. Existing approaches to this problem primarily reduce the multi-dimensional EEG time series to a single averaged feature vector, thereby discarding the temporal structure of the emotional response. The present work addresses three identified gaps in the literature: the absence of temporal interpretability, the uniform use of frequency bands, and the use of single-scale temporal feature extraction. A deep learning architecture, MST-Mamba-Asym, is proposed, comprising four components: Asymmetry Attention, which encodes hemispheric asymmetry by computing signed left–right channel differences, FreqBandAttention, which learns differential weights across …

Rethinking Climate Change Education: Wyoming And New Jersey As Effective Models Of Climate Change In Education Standards, Jamie W. Miller Jan 2026

Rethinking Climate Change Education: Wyoming And New Jersey As Effective Models Of Climate Change In Education Standards, Jamie W. Miller

Pitzer Senior Theses

Education is an essential and oft-overlooked part of the conversation about climate change. As I’ll demonstrate in this thesis, education shapes how the public understands climate change and creates environmental knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and intentions. Exploring and understanding climate change education allows us to understand how people form perspectives about climate issues. This topic is extremely important, but one we often gloss over when thinking about climate solutions. I analyzed three case studies of educational standards in the United States to understand how political context, writing focuses, and benchmarks impact the efficacy of climate change standards. My research found that …

Effect Of Ionic Strength On Gelation Time And Strength Of Amps-Based Polymer Gels, Maryam Sharifi Paroushi, Xuyang Tian, Baojun Bai, Thomas P. Schuman, Yin Zhang, Mingzhen Wei Jan 2026

Effect Of Ionic Strength On Gelation Time And Strength Of Amps-Based Polymer Gels, Maryam Sharifi Paroushi, Xuyang Tian, Baojun Bai, Thomas P. Schuman, Yin Zhang, Mingzhen Wei

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polymer gel treatment has been widely applied for improving sweep efficiency and controlling excessive water and gas production. Their performance depends on gelation time and final gel strength. In most studies, brine salinity is used to describe the effect of formation water on gel behavior. However, changing salinity also changes ionic strength and ion composition at the same time. Because of this coupling, it is difficult to identify the mechanisms controlling gelation, which has led to inconsistent trends in the literature. Increasing salinity has been reported to either slow or accelerate gelation and to weaken or strengthen gels depending on …

Coupling Liquid Chromatography To Orbitrap Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry: Overcoming Isotope Effects Of Chromatography And Amount-Dependency By Peak Homogenization, Aoife Canavan, Leonhard Prechtl, Habib Al-Ghoul, Nils Kuhlbusch, Andrea M. Erhardt, Martin Elsner

Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

Electrospray ionization Orbitrap mass spectrometry (ESI-Orbitrap-MS) has recently proven to be a powerful tool for compound- and position-specific stable isotope analysis, targeting isotopologues of multiple elements (H, C, N, O, S) in polar analytes. However, studies have so far mainly focused on pure analyte solutions via direct infusion. Here, we present the online coupling of liquid chromatography (LC) to ESI-Orbitrap-MS for stable isotope analysis of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), a synthetic antimicrobial, used as a model compound. Our study explored the fidelity of isotope values with two strategies for capturing and broadening chromatographic peaks after LC. When capturing the target analyte in …

Science Education Resource Center (SERC)

Self-efficacy is often investigated as a key attitudinal component of academic persistence and performance, and self-efficacy surveys can serve in research models as efficient and non-threatening assessment tools to augment or substitute for achievement or performance measures. The Geoscience Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale (GeoMSES) builds on prior work in measurement of self-efficacy for mathematics by focusing specifically on students’ capacity to apply mathematical skills to typical problems encountered in majors-level undergraduate geoscience courses or in professional geoscience settings. The scale was developed as part of program evaluation research for a set of learning modules designed to augment existing geoscience curricula. In …

Toward Conditions For Consensus Of Noisy Bounded-Confidence Models, Madeline Reeve Jan 2026

Toward Conditions For Consensus Of Noisy Bounded-Confidence Models, Madeline Reeve

HMC Senior Theses

Models of opinion dynamics aim to describe the spread of opinions over time in a social network. However, many canonical models are deterministic and thus may fail to capture uncertainty present in social interactions. This work investigates the effect of adding noise into bounded-confidence models, a class of opinion dynamics models where agents are more likely to be influenced by opinions close to their own. In particular, we propose a noisy modification of the Deffuant–Weisbuch bounded-confidence model. We prove that in this model all agents eventually adopt the same opinion—that is, our model converges to consensus. In doing so, we …

Artificial Intelligence Methods For Circadian Rhythm Recovery And Disease Identification From High-Dimensional Omics Data, Aram Ansary Ogholbake Jan 2026

Artificial Intelligence Methods For Circadian Rhythm Recovery And Disease Identification From High-Dimensional Omics Data, Aram Ansary Ogholbake

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

High-throughput transcriptomic and proteomic technologies have enabled opportunities for studying biological processes and disease mechanisms. However, extracting meaningful biological information from these high-dimensional datasets remains challenging due to limited sample sizes, biological heterogeneity, measurement noise, and the absence of biological annotations. In particular, many molecular datasets lack temporal information required for circadian analysis, making the study of circadian rhythms difficult. Moreover, disease diagnosis and biomarker discovery from transcriptomic data often rely on complex machine learning models whose predictions are difficult to interpret and may not generalize well across independent datasets and experimental platforms. These limitations motivate the development of artificial …

Ai For Life Sciences: From Geometric Protein Modeling To Multimodal Drug Design, Feng Jiang Jan 2026

Ai For Life Sciences: From Geometric Protein Modeling To Multimodal Drug Design, Feng Jiang

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

Predicting biomolecular interactions, from immune recognition to drug–target binding, is a central problem in the life sciences and computational drug discovery. Deep learning has advanced this area, yet three challenges persist: the topology of large, highly imbalanced interaction networks; structural noise in computationally predicted protein models; and the integration of multimodal information such as functional text and taxonomic annotations. This dissertation develops a coherent set of models spanning immune complex prediction and small-molecule drug design: graph learning that addresses network topology and severe class imbalance; a noise-tolerant method that fuses predicted structures with evolutionary sequence features; and multimodal representation learning …

How Candidates Campaign To Sway Minority Voter Bases, Katelyn Karwick Jan 2026

How Candidates Campaign To Sway Minority Voter Bases, Katelyn Karwick

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Religious groups in the United States are making large partisan switches–decades-long Democrats are questioning their support and often change their vote to another party. This phenomenon contributed to Michigan’s flip to Republican in the 2024 presidential election, as well as divided Jewish support for New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Past research has linked a positive correlation between religious participation and political mobilization, though the tactics used by campaigners to create this connection have gone under research. Looking at Donald Trump’s victory in Dearborn, Michigan in 2024 and Zohran Mamdani’s extensive New York City mayoral campaign, this study focuses …

Open Educational Resources

This open educational resource presents a practical mathematics lesson in which students turn numerical data from Wikipedia into a clear data visualization. Students select a Wikipedia page with a data table but little or no visual representation. They examine the original source, date, units, definitions, and possible data limits. They then organize the data in Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet, choose an appropriate chart, and explain what the visualization helps readers understand. A complete worked example uses the 2017 population growth rates of South American countries.

The resource package includes an instructor lesson plan, a student project guide, a Wikimedia …

Iron(Ii)/Cobalt(Ii)-Mediated Silicon And Carbon Quantum Dots For Nanozyme Activity And Fluorescence Sensing Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Glucose, Kang Qin Jan 2026

Iron(Ii)/Cobalt(Ii)-Mediated Silicon And Carbon Quantum Dots For Nanozyme Activity And Fluorescence Sensing Of Hydrogen Peroxide And Glucose, Kang Qin

Dissertations and Theses

Silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely studied as fluorescent nanomaterials for sensing applications. In this thesis, we developed two different nanomaterials, SiQDs and CQDs, and investigated their catalytic activities and applied them for the detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose. In the first project, Co2+-mediated SiQDs were synthesized through a hydrothermal method. The obtained nanoparticles showed obvious peroxidase-like activity toward the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 under acidic conditions. Moreover, a weak oxidation of TMB was also observed without H2O2, suggesting the existence of oxidase-like activity. To better understand the …

Fourier Pseudospectral Methods For The Variable-Order Space Fractional Wave Equations, Yanzhi Zhang, Xiaofei Zhao, Shiping Zhou Jan 2026

Fourier Pseudospectral Methods For The Variable-Order Space Fractional Wave Equations, Yanzhi Zhang, Xiaofei Zhao, Shiping Zhou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose Fourier pseudospectral methods to solve the variable-order space fractional wave equation and develop an accelerated matrix-free approach for its effective implementation. In constant-order cases, fast algorithms can be designed via the fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), and the computational cost at each time step is O(Nlog⁡N) with N the total number of spatial points. In variable-order cases, however, the spatial dependence in the power s(x) leads to the failure of inverse FFTs. While the direct matrix-vector multiplication approach becomes impractical due to excessive memory requirements. Hence, we propose an accelerated matrix-free approach for effective implementation in …

Sulfur deficiency can substantially reduce pasture yield on sandy soils, particularly in wet years where the sulfate form of sulfur leaches below the root zone of pasture plants, making it unavailable.

This information applies specifically to high rainfall pastures (over 600mm average annual rainfall) in the south-west of Western Australia.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommends basing fertiliser decisions on good evidence (soil and tissue test results)

Tissue Sampling And Analysis For High Rainfall Pastures In Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Jan 2026

Tissue Sampling And Analysis For High Rainfall Pastures In Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Natural resources factsheets

Tissue testing helps identify nutrient deficiencies that impact plant health. In high rainfall areas ( > 600 mm), pastures are highly productive and have greater demand for both macro- and micronutrients. Micronutrient status is best assessed through plant tissue, as soil levels are difficult to measure accurately.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommends tissue testing to assess the effectiveness of fertiliser and soil testing programs, and diagnose emerging macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies that could cause production losses.

Operational Hallucination And Safety Drift In Ai Agents, Shasha Yu, Fiona Carroll, Barry L. Bentley Jan 2026

Operational Hallucination And Safety Drift In Ai Agents, Shasha Yu, Fiona Carroll, Barry L. Bentley

School of Professional Studies

Large language models (LLMs) serving as planners in tool-using autonomous agents introduce dynamic reliability risks in multi-turn execution. While single-turn safety mechanisms are relatively mature, extended interactions reveal structural vulnerabilities where initial alignment degrades over time. This paper empirically characterizes two observed failure modes across multiple state-of-the-art LLMs: Safety Drift, the gradual erosion of declared safety intent leading to constraint-violating actions (e.g., textual refusal followed by reconnaissance and unsafe execution), and Operational Hallucination, persistent repetitive tool calls indicative of flawed state perception (e.g., livelocks even in legitimate tasks). Through controlled multi-turn evaluation on high-stakes ethical dilemmas, malicious requests, and benign …

When Saying "No" Is Not Enough: Cognitive-Action Decoupling And The Illusion Of Safety In Llm Agents, Shasha Yu, Fiona Carroll, Barry L. Bentley Jan 2026

When Saying "No" Is Not Enough: Cognitive-Action Decoupling And The Illusion Of Safety In Llm Agents, Shasha Yu, Fiona Carroll, Barry L. Bentley

School of Professional Studies

Current safety evaluations of large language models (LLMs) predominantly rely on textual compliance, implicitly assuming that refusal-style responses correspond to safe behavior. This assumption becomes fragile when LLMs are embedded in agentic systems with the ability to execute state-changing actions. In this paper, we present an empirical critique of text-centric safety evaluation through an action-aware study of LLM agents under controlled conditions. Across multiple state-of-the-art models, we observe a recurring cognitive–action decoupling: agents generate policy-aligned refusal language while still producing unsafe tool-mediated action proposals. This produces an illusion of safety, where conversational audits indicate compliance even as operational risk persists. …

Twisted Electron Collisions Enhance The Production Of Circular Rydberg States, H. S. Parker, S. L. Sims, D. J. Lamphere, Allison L. Harris Jan 2026

Twisted Electron Collisions Enhance The Production Of Circular Rydberg States, H. S. Parker, S. L. Sims, D. J. Lamphere, Allison L. Harris

Faculty publications – Physics

Circular Rydberg states offer advantages for quantum information and quantum simulation platforms due to their long lifetimes and strong dipole–dipole interactions. Unfortunately, current techniques for the production of these states remain technically challenging. Here we investigate the ability of twisted electron collisions to produce circular Rydberg states. Twisted electrons carry quantized orbital angular momentum (OAM) that can be transferred to the electronic state of the atom, potentially providing an efficient means to generate circular Rydberg states. Using a fully quantum mechanical framework, we compute total excitation cross sections for circular Rydberg states of hydrogen, lithium, rubidium, and cesium targets using …

Big Tech As Transnational Spyware Regulator, Natalie R. Davidson Jan 2026

Big Tech As Transnational Spyware Regulator, Natalie R. Davidson

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Spyware has emerged as a potent tool for leaders to shrink dem- ocratic contestation. In response to calls for constraints on the trade in spyware, states have updated the principal multilateral agree- ment on export controls, civil society groups have employed strate- gic litigation, and the European Union has altered its regulation, in each case with the aim of limiting exports where there is a risk of human rights violations. Yet, scandals involving the Israeli company NSO, among others, have made clear that even the updated regula- tory landscape is inadequate. Many actors are currently debating the reasons for existing …

Monomeric And Dimeric Metal Complexes Of A New Tridentate Azole-Isoindoline-Urea Ligand, Ben Hudak

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

1,3-Diiminoisoindoline (DII) compounds have been found to be novel materials for both metal binding and chromophore applications. In this work, I am investigating the next synthetic step in developing pyrazole- and indazole-DII compounds. These compounds stem from the reaction of the unsubstituted imine of the pyrazole- or indazole-DII adduct with an isocyanate. These DII compounds, DII-pyrazolePhNCO, DII-pyrazolenapthylNCO, DII-indazolePhNCO, DII-indazolenapthylNCO, DII-pyrazoleptolylNCO, and DII-indazoleptolylNCO were prepared using ethanol as the solvent and heat. Metal acetates were then reacted with the ligands using DMF and heat. The acetate salts included copper (II) and nickel(II). Some distinctive hydrogen bonding interactions were observed in the …

Eigenvalue Bound Preservation: Numerical Experiments On The 2d Q-Tensor Flow, Marcel C. Deguzman Jan 2026

Eigenvalue Bound Preservation: Numerical Experiments On The 2d Q-Tensor Flow, Marcel C. Deguzman

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

We study the evolution of nematic liquid crystals in two dimensions using the Q-tensor model, a continuum framework that describes the orientational order of rod-like molecules via symmetric, traceless matrices. Focusing on the Landau-de Gennes energy and its associated gradient flow, we consider a reduced two-dimensional formulation in which the Q-tensor is fully described by two scalar functions. This reduction simplifies the system to a nonlinear, coupled PDE for the scalars, while preserving essential physical features. A key question is whether the eigenvalues of the Q-tensor remain within the physically admissible range under this flow. Building on a theoretical result …

One of the most common types of cybercriminal groups are, “Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS)" groups, who create and sell ransomware. While research is conducted into the development of ransomware, there is limited reporting on the organizational structure and habits of RaaS groups. In 2022, prominent RaaS group Conti had their chat logs leaked, with the logs ranging from 2020 to 2022. This study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of RaaS group structures by utilizing the Conti leaked logs as a case study. The study, entitled “Ransomware as Organization: A Comparative Analysis …

Lifestyle Factors' Effect On Political And Religious Behavior, Madison A. Price Jan 2026

Lifestyle Factors' Effect On Political And Religious Behavior, Madison A. Price

SPARK Symposium Presentations

There is a general understanding of an individuals’ political/religious beliefs when you analyze predictors like support of same sex marriage or views on abortion, but there is not a ton of research on how everyday lifestyle factors might affect how someone aligns themselves politically or religiously. Researchers have begun to expand the horizons of political and religious research by investigating how income, health, and politics affect religion (Francis-Tan & Tian, 2022), but there is a need to expand into more specific lifestyle factors. Which brings reason to question a few things: what lifestyle and demographic factors predict how religious someone …

A Macrocognitive Design Taxonomy For Simulation-Based Training Systems: Bridging Cognitive Theory And Human-Computer Interaction, Jessica M. Johnson Jan 2026

A Macrocognitive Design Taxonomy For Simulation-Based Training Systems: Bridging Cognitive Theory And Human-Computer Interaction, Jessica M. Johnson

Virginia Digital Maritime Center (VDMC) Faculty Publications

Simulation-based training systems are increasingly deployed to prepare learners for complex, safety-critical, and dynamic work environments. While advances in computing have enabled immersive and data-rich simulations, many systems remain optimized for procedural accuracy and surface-level task performance rather than the macrocognitive processes that underpin adaptive expertise. Macrocognition encompasses higher-order cognitive processes that are essential for performance transfer beyond controlled training conditions. When these processes are insufficiently supported, training systems risk fostering brittle strategies and negative training effects. This paper introduces a macrocognitive design taxonomy for simulation-based training systems derived from a large-scale meta-analysis examining the transfer of macrocognitive skills from …
