Apparent Hack’S Law In River Deltas, Tian Y. Dong, Lawrence Vulis, Hongbo Ma, Alejandro Tejedor, Timothy A. Goudge Apr 2026

Apparent Hack’S Law In River Deltas, Tian Y. Dong, Lawrence Vulis, Hongbo Ma, Alejandro Tejedor, Timothy A. Goudge

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

River deltas are densely populated, ecologically vital landscapes threatened by rising sea levels. Distributary channel networks disperse sediment to build deltaic land, yet the relationship between the network organization and land building remains elusive. Inspired by Hack’s law, which shows that watershed drainage area scales with channel length in tributary networks, we analyzed a global dataset of distributary networks and found a nearly identical scaling relationship between distributary channel length and nourishment area, the land-building counterpart to drainage area. Despite this apparent global scaling, we further identified two distinct local land-building patterns: uniform delta networks consistently follow Hack’s law, whereas …

Vulnerability Of Bass Populations To Our Changing Climate In The Mississippi River, Cameron Schreifels Apr 2026

Vulnerability Of Bass Populations To Our Changing Climate In The Mississippi River, Cameron Schreifels

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Climate change is altering habitats and damaging bass populations throughout the Mississippi. The main factors of climate change affecting bass are shifts in water quality and significant weather events, which have increased bass vulnerability. With rising temperatures and eutrophication changing the way these bass hunt for their prey, it has made it easier for other non-native species to encroach on their habitat, which has led to bass further encroaching on other species due to climate change.  Given their economic importance and cultural significance, better management practices are needed to find new ways to protect them and ensure they remain a …

Inhibition Of The Pi3k/Akt/Mtor Pathway In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Gretchen Gunderzik Apr 2026

Inhibition Of The Pi3k/Akt/Mtor Pathway In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Gretchen Gunderzik

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

The phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway is a cell survival pathway that is commonly unregulated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Current inhibitors of this pathway often face the challenge of inherent and developed resistance. There is the need to further develop a targeted treatment therapy focused on inhibition of this signaling pathway. This could synergistically enhance commonly used cancer therapies such as chemotherapy, which NSCLC patients often develop resistance to. Due to the complexity of the pathway, dual inhibition is an intriguing avenue of research as it helps to mitigate resistance from …

A Boron Umbrella: Enhancing The Hydrolytic Stability Of Boronic Ester Based Covalent Adaptable Networks Toward The Development Of Recyclable Thermoset Polymers, Twila Lefeber Apr 2026

A Boron Umbrella: Enhancing The Hydrolytic Stability Of Boronic Ester Based Covalent Adaptable Networks Toward The Development Of Recyclable Thermoset Polymers, Twila Lefeber

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

The accumulation of non-recyclable thermoset plastic waste demonstrates a need for high- performance materials that bridge the gap between the reprocessability of thermoplastics and the durability required for industrial materials. Previous research has produced high-strength and recyclable hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) materials using boronic ester crosslinks, but the susceptibility of the Lewis acidic boron atom makes it vulnerable to hydrolysis which limits longevity in humid or aqueous environments. The proposed research aims to target covalent adaptable networks (CANs) based on the boronic ester interaction, and their instability in water. Three structurally modified crosslinkers are proposed to incorporate into a …

Aquatic Invasive Species Control: Minnesota’S Herbicide Problem, Adam Novak Apr 2026

Aquatic Invasive Species Control: Minnesota’S Herbicide Problem, Adam Novak

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Minnesota lakes have an invasive species problem: invasives are outcompeting our native plants and causing ecological degradation. Herbicides are used in Minnesota to help alleviate the stress that invasive plants put on the ecosystem, but continued use of herbicides has its own environmental downside. An analysis of five common aquatic herbicides including, diquat, endothall, 2,4-D, fluridone, and copper-based solutions was completed to find specific ecological downsides. Sediment degradation, effects on various fish life stages, zooplankton, and other non-target organisms were analyzed. This study offers alternative managements strategies and presents a decision tree to help lake associations manage invasive plants.

An Analysis Of A Family Of Root Finding Methods, Arabella Fuzak Apr 2026

An Analysis Of A Family Of Root Finding Methods, Arabella Fuzak

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

This thesis analyzes the behavior of a family of iterative root-finding methods, the Hansen-Patrick Family, which has a parameter, alpha, to create methods such as Newton’s methods, Halley’s method, and Euler’s method. By varying the parameter alpha, with both real and complex values, this project examines how the parameter can change convergence, divergence, and stability for different functions. This is shown by basin maps and Mandelbrot-like sets to visualize this behavior and classify points based on whether they converge to a root, diverge to infinity, or remain bounded without converging.

Uncertainty Handling In Stock Market Prediction: A Fuzzy Markov Chain Approach, Alpa Singh Rajput, Arpan Singh Rajput Apr 2026

Uncertainty Handling In Stock Market Prediction: A Fuzzy Markov Chain Approach, Alpa Singh Rajput, Arpan Singh Rajput

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Predicting the stock market is never easy because it is influenced by many uncertain and constantly changing factors such as economic conditions, investor behaviour, and global events. Traditional models like the Crisp Markov Chain (CMC) try to predict market movements by using fixed probabilities for different states like bullish, bearish, or stagnant. However, real markets do not behave in such a strict way—they often move gradually between states, which these models fail to capture. To overcome this limitation, this study introduces a Fuzzy Markov Chain (FMC) model, where fuzzy logic is used to handle uncertainty and allow smoother transitions between …

Modeling Agentic Artificial Intelligence Uncertainty In Agriculture Based 6generation: A Hybrid Q-Rung Orthopair Fuzzy Mcdm Methodology, Zekra Sakr, Mona Mohamed Apr 2026

Modeling Agentic Artificial Intelligence Uncertainty In Agriculture Based 6generation: A Hybrid Q-Rung Orthopair Fuzzy Mcdm Methodology, Zekra Sakr, Mona Mohamed

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

In era of advanced intelligent revolutions, the collaboration between intelligent technologies became imperative. For instance, integrating 6G communications with agentic artificial intelligence considered a catalyst to shift agriculture sector into optimized and intelligence sector. This integration resulted in transitioning the sector from static automation to autonomous, agent-based ecosystems. Accordingly, the efficiency roles for artificial intelligence agents (AIAs), deploying and selecting optimal AIA is important. Yet, selection process is still difficult because agricultural criteria are multifaceted and there are inherent environmental uncertainties. To address these challenges and bolster the selection process, this paper suggests a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) that bolstered …

An Improved Logarithmic Ratio-Product Type Estimator For Mean Modeling And Estimation Under Neutrosophic Uncertainty, Anchal Yadav, Mukesh Kumar Apr 2026

An Improved Logarithmic Ratio-Product Type Estimator For Mean Modeling And Estimation Under Neutrosophic Uncertainty, Anchal Yadav, Mukesh Kumar

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

In classical statistics, population mean estimation generally assumes precise and determinate data along with known auxiliary information. However, in real-world situations where observations are imprecise or expressed in interval form, such as temperature variations or financial market data, classical approaches become less effective. To address this limitation, neutrosophic statistics provide a more flexible framework for handling uncertainty and indeterminacy. This study proposes a neutrosophic logarithmic ratio-product type estimator for estimating the finite population mean using auxiliary information. The bias and mean squared error (MSE) of the proposed estimator are derived using a first-order approximation. Furthermore, performance evaluation is carried out …

Enhanced Parametric Approach For Solving Interval-Valued Trapezoidal Neutrosophic Linear Fractional Programming Problems, Hamiden Abd El- Wahed Khalifa H.A.Khalifa, Moodi Abdulrahman Abdullah Al-Rajeh, Sultan S. Alodhaibi Apr 2026

Enhanced Parametric Approach For Solving Interval-Valued Trapezoidal Neutrosophic Linear Fractional Programming Problems, Hamiden Abd El- Wahed Khalifa H.A.Khalifa, Moodi Abdulrahman Abdullah Al-Rajeh, Sultan S. Alodhaibi

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Neutrosophic sets (NSs) generalize the classical versions, by providing a flexible framework capable of representing incomplete, inconsistent, and unclassified data that frequently arises in practical decision frameworks. In this study, a linear fractional programming (LFP) problem with uncertain parameters is investigated. All coefficients in the objective function (OF) as well as the left- and right-hand sides of the constraints are represented using fully trapezoidal neutrosophic numbers (NNs). By employing a suitable score function, the proposed neutrosophic LFP model is transformed into an equivalent scalar LFP problem. Subsequently, a parametric solution procedure is established to regulate the neutrosophic optimum solution. This …

Gauss Elimination Method For Solving The System Of Neutrosophic Linear Equations, Elsayed Badr, Shokry Nada, Saeed Ali, Aya Rabie Apr 2026

Gauss Elimination Method For Solving The System Of Neutrosophic Linear Equations, Elsayed Badr, Shokry Nada, Saeed Ali, Aya Rabie

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

This paper proposes a unified computational framework for solving linear systems under trapezoidal Neutrosophic uncertainty. The system is formulated as A( I )x = b( I ), where both the coefficient matrix and the right-hand side vector incorporate an indeterminacy parameter I, expressed as A( I ) = A0 + IA1 and b( I ) = b0 + Ib1. A decomposition strategy is developed to separate the model into deterministic and indeterminacy components, yielding a solution of the form x( I ) = x0 + Ix1. The deterministic component is obtained via …

Warming Climate Amplifies Vapor Pressure Deficit Limits On Gross Primary Productivity, Shiqin Xu, Nate G. Mcdowell, Tim R. Mcvicar, Diego G. Miralles, Stephen Sitch, Pablo Sanchez-Martinez, Joshua B. Fisher, Pierre Friedlingstein, Hylke E. Beck, Matthew F. Mccabe

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Ongoing climate warming may profoundly impact terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP), a key component of the global carbon cycle. However, uncertainty in the relative roles of atmospheric water demand (vapor pressure deficit, VPD) and root-zone soil moisture (SM) limits predictions of drought impacts on GPP. Here, we show that growing-season GPP was more strongly constrained by VPD than SM globally, based on observation-constrained model estimates, satellite retrievals and Dynamic Global Vegetation Model simulations. The importance of VPD increased with higher temperatures and more severe and prolonged droughts. This pattern reflects VPD’s critical role in regulating stomatal conductance and plant hydraulic …

Redefining Certainty: Non-Euclidean Geometry And Theology Transformation Throughout The Intellectual Unrest Of The Early 1800s, Luke Bensinger Apr 2026

Redefining Certainty: Non-Euclidean Geometry And Theology Transformation Throughout The Intellectual Unrest Of The Early 1800s, Luke Bensinger

Honors Theses

To bridge the gap between mathematics and theology, it is necessary to explore their intersection and challenge the notion that these fields are incompatible. This study focuses on the 19th century, a period when non-Euclidean geometries emerged and disrupted mathematical certainty, while Protestant theologians such as Barton W. Stone and Alexander Campbell grappled with Calvinism and shifting theological perspectives. By analyzing mathematicians studying geometry, such as Gauss, Lobachevsky, and Riemann, this research examines how both disciplines balance change with enduring truths.

Analysis Of The Flavonoid Composition Of Honey Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Bryce Phillips Apr 2026

Analysis Of The Flavonoid Composition Of Honey Using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Bryce Phillips

Honors Theses

Honey is a naturally occurring substance that has a complex composition including compounds such as flavonoids, that contribute to potential health benefits. Quantitative analysis of flavonoids in honey can be challenging due to their similar structural characteristics, matrix effects, and chromatographic peak separation issues. This study aimed to establish calibration curves for five flavonoids–kaempferol, luteolin, chrysin, myricetin, and quercetin– to estimate their concentrations in five honey samples from varying geographic origins. Liquid-liquid extraction was used to isolate the flavonoids from honey. High Performance Liquid Chromatography was utilized to establish calibration curves and analyze honey samples. The calibration curves assembled demonstrated …
