The Presence Of Rhenium In Montana Manganese Ores., Henry E. Swanson May 1937

The Presence Of Rhenium In Montana Manganese Ores., Henry E. Swanson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Rhenium properties offer many interesting possibilities, therefore any ores containing rhenium would be of considerable value. Its close relationship to manganese in the periodic table led to the belief that manganese ores would be an excellent place to search for the metal. Investigation of the literature of rhenium revealed that no ore was known to contain more than 0.001 per cent of rhenium.

The Theory Of Determinants: Some Special Forms And Applications, William Ralph Eikelberger May 1937

The Theory Of Determinants: Some Special Forms And Applications, William Ralph Eikelberger

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The theory of determinants is a relatively new branch of mathematics; it was not firmly established until a brief 200 years ago. It was not until the middle of the 18th century that Cramer, one of the independent discoverers of the fundamental idea, was fortunate enough to attract attention to the theory of determinants. Much of the literature is written on the assumption that its reader has a good background in the subject. Then other authors just give the fundamental properties of determinants without proof of their statements. These latter authors are not interested in the mathematical theory of determinants, …

The Particle Size Of Emulsions Prepared With Pure And Commercial Egg Yolk, August Carl Siefert

Bachelors’ Theses

Emulsions are undoubtedly among the most useful preparations which man can make, and their application in industry, pharmacy, and cooking is wide and varied. We are all familiar with mayonnaise in which and emulsion of olive oil is obtained with the use of egg yolk as an emulsifying agent. Egg yolk itself is one of Nature's very best emulsions, as is milk which is both a colloid and an emulsion.

This thesis is concerned in particular with the application of emulsions in the tanning industry, where oil is applied to leather in the form of an emulsion to make it …

A Study Of The Gelation Of Several Paraffins In Various Solutions, Joseph John Wocasek May 1937

A Study Of The Gelation Of Several Paraffins In Various Solutions, Joseph John Wocasek

Bachelors’ Theses

In the selection of various waxes for commercial use, it has long been the custom to depend solely upon melting-point for property determination. Thus, for example, all paraffin waxes which had a melting range between 50 and 65 degrees centigrade, were thought to have much the same properties and that any or the commercial paraffins of this range would therefore impart the same characteristics to the product in which they were to be used. But with increased use, these waxes have come under more careful observation and experimentation. Very little data has as yet been released for publication but already …

A Study Of The Equilibria Between Bentonite And The Various Replacing Agents In Alcoholic And Water Solutions, Joel E. Fletcher May 1937

A Study Of The Equilibria Between Bentonite And The Various Replacing Agents In Alcoholic And Water Solutions, Joel E. Fletcher

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Investigators in soils have long recognized the importance of the colloidal fraction of soil, and also the almost inseparable problem of replaceable bases. It is generally accepted that the replaceable base fraction of a colloid controls to a large degree the physical properties exhibited by it. Volumes of work have been written on the problem of controlling the reactions of this fraction and on studies of the properties exhibited by it when it is saturated with various cations. Each worker has proceeded in his own individual way or followed the example set by some previous worker with specific modifications.

A Comparison Between The Percent Of Maltose Sugar In The Malt Wort And The Characteristics Of The Malt, William Black

Bachelors’ Theses

Interest in this problem was brought about through working with malt in a malting laboratory. The curiosity of the author prompted research along the lines herein explained and a correlation between the amount of maltose in a malt wort and other variable factors explained in the following chapters was sought.

There has been a great deal of work done in the malting field which adapts itself readily to organic research. The chemistry of malt and malt products has arrived at a state where regular standard analysis can be applied. However, the research possibilities are practically unlimited and this work done …

Camels Of The Columbia Plateau, George F. Beck Mar 1937

Camels Of The Columbia Plateau, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

However foreign they may seem to us the camels are one of our oldest American stocks. Our Western plains once supported large herds of them, humped and humpless, large and small, giraffe-necked and normal-necked. For some 35 million years, from Oligocene to the Pliocene, the camels were confined to North America and it was not until recently, geologically speaking that we shared the race with the Old World.

The Penetration Of Light Through Snow And Ice Cover, W. C. Croxton, W. B. Thurman, Theodore Shiffer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

During several months of each year, soil and bodies of water in high latitudes are separated from the enveloping atmosphere by a layer of snow and ice of varying thickness. The effects of this insulating layer are not well understood, having received relatively a rather surprisingly small amount of attention by ecologists. It is known that snow cover influences the heat exchange between the surface of the earth and the air. Ice is thought to interfere with gas exchange between water and air and with aeration by wave action to the extent that epidemic losses of fish life occur through …
