The Goss Lemming Mouse, Synaptomys Cooperi Gossii (Goues), In Nebraska, Edson Fichter, Merle F. Hansen

In the course of studies on the cestode parasites of microtine rodents by one of the authors (Hansen), specimens of mice were sent to the United State National Museum where they were identified by Dr. David H. Johnson. Two of these microtines proved to be Synaptomys cooperi gossii (Coues). These specimens of Synaptomys (U.S.N.M. Nos. 282343 and 282344), collected at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, on September 16, 1946 (male) and November 20, 1946 (female), respectively, are the first ones to be identified from Nebraska.

The preparation of organic fluorides, until only recently, had been seriously curtailed not only because of the difficulty experienced in their synthesis, but also due to the lack of information with regard to their physical and chemical properties. With the investigation of their characteristics, their great importance was for the first time fully realized. A concerted search was made for new modes of their preparation. That this search was rewarded is shown in part by the synthesis of several aromatic fluorides as a portion of this thesis.

A summary of the literature on the nutritional value of iodine in the diet of various forms of life is given. The majority of evidence indicates that iodine is an essential element in plant and animal nutrition. It functions particularly in animal metabolism in the form of thyroxine. The occurrence of iodine in a nature has been briefly discussed. Investigations made in this regard indicate iodine to be almost universally distributed in very minute amounts. The problem of this thesis was to determine by means of a test the retention of the fundamentals of percentage as shown by beginning eighth grade pupils, who were taught percentage the previous year in the seventh grade. The fundamentals of percentage are here considered as the changing of percents to decimal fractions or common fractions, the reverse procedures, and the three types of problems arising from the relation, base times rate equals part.
