Of the different micro-fossils used in this work, foraminifera have been studied most, are the best described, and hence, by far the most helpful.

During 1944-1945 the volume of lobsters landed in the spiny lobsters industry decreased to about one half of the 1943 volume and to little more than one third of the amound landed during 1941, which was the year of peak production. Since it was suggested that the cause of this might be overfishing, the University of Miami Marine Laboratory was invited to carry out an investigation in co-operation with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida State Board of Conservation.

Textural and mineralogical analyses have been made of the specimens in order to determine the textural and petrologic variation between the two facies, and whether each of the facies was deposited under similar conditions.

The collecting of vetebrate fossils from deposits of Blancan age in Kansas, Nebraska, and Texas during the past twelve years has revealed many interesting forms. Some species have been found to have wide geographic distribution. A large sciurid related to the woodchucks has been recognized from both Kansas and Nebraska and is here described as a new genus and species.

The practical application of a positive solution to this problem would be an aid to the students of charac­terization of organic compounds. It is necessary for them to make an elementary analysis in order to determine the class into which the unknown compound belongs. A nitrogen test which will give definite results will eliminate any doubt as to the presence of nitrogen.

In the case of elements which have several valences the relative stability and the means of changing from one state of oxidation to another are also important.
