The Occurrences Of Non-Metallic Minerals In Montana, Samuel T. Mitchell Jun 1951

The Occurrences Of Non-Metallic Minerals In Montana, Samuel T. Mitchell

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This thesis is essentially an abstract of the literature concerning occurrences in Montana of minerals with a non-metallic luster. The discussions give a general description of the occurrences of minerals as reported by the various references, but is not complete as less than 40 percent of the non-metallic minerals known to exist in Montana are discussed.

Phase Behavior Of Sodium Stearate In Anhydrous Cyclohexane, Walter Edward Reid Jr. Jun 1951

Phase Behavior Of Sodium Stearate In Anhydrous Cyclohexane, Walter Edward Reid Jr.

Master's Theses

Soap solutions, aqueous and non-aqueous, are characteristic in that they firm colloidal systems at certain concentrations, the properties of which are influenced by temperature and pressure. Application of the Gibbs phase rule to such systems makes possible the location of the various phases of a particular system and hence enables phase diagrams to be constructed. For systems of soap-hydrocarbons such as are found in fuels, beauty preparations, greases, medical preparations, etc., a phase diagram would show very readily the most satisfactory composition for the conditions desired.

Separation Of The Inorganic Cations Of Groups Ii And Ila By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Donald P. Schuelter Jun 1951

Separation Of The Inorganic Cations Of Groups Ii And Ila By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Donald P. Schuelter

Bachelors’ Theses

The field of inorganic paper chromatography is in its infancy at the present time. Numerous papers have been published describing various methods for separation and hypothesis for the mechanism of the separations. Since the number of variables involved in chromatographic separations is so large it is rather difficult to establish any concrete principles. Many phases of the separations and their effects have been investigated but only too often they yield conflicting data. Up to the present time the majority of authors have confined their studies to a particular solvent and grade of filter paper.

The Identification Of Various Halogen Compounds Through Formation Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, Kenneth E. Miller Jun 1951

The Identification Of Various Halogen Compounds Through Formation Of Quaternary Ammonium Salts, Kenneth E. Miller

Bachelors’ Theses

When, in the process of characterizing an organic compound, the compound has been definitely placed in one certain class, such as acids or alcohols, and all but a certain number of the compounds in the class have been eliminated by physical constants or functional groups, the final step is the preparation of suitable derivatives. If, however, the unknown falls into a class of compounds of such chemical nature that preparation of deriyatives is impossible, or, at the least, difficult, then the identification must depend entirely upon physical constants. This is frequency the case with alkyl halides. They must be identified …

Studies On Derivatives Of 3-Ethylphenanthrene, Eugene R. Miller Jun 1951

Studies On Derivatives Of 3-Ethylphenanthrene, Eugene R. Miller

Bachelors’ Theses

The following thesis was undertaken to study the derivatives of 3 etbyl-phenanthrene. The problem was undertaken to familiarize the author with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and the various reactions and unit processes which are involved in the synthesis or these derivatives. It is hoped that the experience gained in pursuing the objective of this thesis will provide a background which may prove valuable in future work tor an advanced degree and ultimately help to secure a position in some phase of research work dealing with biological compounds containing the phenanthrene configuration in its nucleus.

Phenol-Aldehyde-Condensation Synthesis Of A Possible Gerxioide And Fungioide, Bis(4-Fluoro-2-Hydroxyphenyl) Methane, Erwin A. Stern

Bachelors’ Theses

The successful synthesis of chlorinated and brominated dihydroxydlphenylmethanes during the last ten years and their use as germicides and fungicides coupled with the known effect of fluorine and alkyl groups upon phenol, warranted the attempted synthesis of fluorinated and alkylated dihydroxydiphenylmethanee . It is the purpose of this thesis to attempt the synthesis of fluorinated and alkylated dihydroxydiphenylmethanee for purposes of their use as germicides and fungicides.

Benzoylation Studies With A Compound Reported To Be Benzoyl Acid Sulfate And Analytical Studies On The Sample, Robert J. Peanasky Jun 1951

Benzoylation Studies With A Compound Reported To Be Benzoyl Acid Sulfate And Analytical Studies On The Sample, Robert J. Peanasky

Bachelors’ Theses

A very valuable reagent in organic characterization work is benzoyl chloride. By interacting benzoyl chloride with any one of the general classes of compounds termed phenols, alcohols, and amines, solid and very satisfactory derivatives are usually produced. However, the action of this compound occurs rather slowly and the operator, unless especially careful, suffers from the lachrimatory effects of the reagent, benzoyl chloride. A sample was submitted to my major professor, Dr. C. R. Haymaker, by Gene LaFave who claimed that it was benzoyl acid sulfate. This compound was a solid not difficult to manipulate in contradistinction to the lachrimatory liquid …

The Synthesis Of 3-Ethyl-9-Acetylphenanthrene, Elizabeth R. Bender Jun 1951

The Synthesis Of 3-Ethyl-9-Acetylphenanthrene, Elizabeth R. Bender

Bachelors’ Theses

In 1929 , there was recognized a relatively small number of naturally occurring phenanthrene compounds as compared with those known today. These compounds include several groups of substances which are as strikingly similar in structure as they are different in their actions on the animal organism. For instance, the structure of the sterols and bile acids contain the perhydrocyclopentenophenanthrene ring system. Upon later research, it was found that the sex hormones and cardiac glycosides (heart poisons secreted by toads) have a structure very similar to this system. They are all derivatives of cyclopentenophenanthrene.

A Differential Electronic Photometer And Polariscope With Negative Feedback, William Rogers Jun 1951

A Differential Electronic Photometer And Polariscope With Negative Feedback, William Rogers

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

In connection which a program of research in the physics of the atmosphere, a need has arisen for a sensitive differential photometer which would be adaptable to balloon-borne operation. This paper describes a prototype of such an instrument. The present photometer is constructed for preliminary investigations to be carried out in the laboratory, but with light weight components used in the design except for the power supply and the main structural frame. Consideration is given to these latter features to the extent that the entire equipment is designed for operation from power sources which can be directly replaced by small …

An Experimental Investigation Of A Light Weight High Voltage Power Supply, James F. Tribby Jun 1951

An Experimental Investigation Of A Light Weight High Voltage Power Supply, James F. Tribby

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This investigation is directed toward the development and design of an electronic high-voltage power supply. The method consists of obtaining a direct current of low intensity by periodically charging by means of a primary battery a group of capacitors in parallel combination and discharging them electronically in series. A stimulus to this investigation is provided by the need for a light-weight electronic current source operating at moderately high voltages which is stable and capable of maintaining a constant current of low intensity over a wide range of variation of the potential from a primary battery. In addition, a power supply …

The Chemical Characteristics Of 8.0-Day I131 Produced By The Beta Decay Of 25-Minute Te131 In Organic Liquids, Francis J. Keneshea Jr. May 1951

The Chemical Characteristics Of 8.0-Day I131 Produced By The Beta Decay Of 25-Minute Te131 In Organic Liquids, Francis J. Keneshea Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In 1934 Szilard and Chalmers found that a large fraction of the radioactive iodine produced in the thermal neutron irradiation of ethyl iodide could be extracted from the irradiated material. The procedure followed was to add a trace of carrier iodine to the irradiated liquid, extract the iodine with an aqueous solution of a reducing agent and precipitate the iodide as silver iodide. The silver iodide precipitate obtained in this manner contained a large fraction of the iodine activity (25-minute I128), at a high specific activity. Since ethyl iodide is not soluble in water and hence is not …

The Variation Problems Of Weierstrass-Bliss And Radon, Douglas M. Gragg May 1951

The Variation Problems Of Weierstrass-Bliss And Radon, Douglas M. Gragg

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Problems of the Calculus of Variations are generalizations of the familiar minimum problems treated in the differential calculus. The relationships between the ordinary minimum problems of the calculus and the generalizations dealt with in the Calculus of Variations is possibly best seen by examining the general Hilbert-Moore minimum problem, and the special examples of such problems formulated in the table below.

The Diophantine Equation, Frederic C. Barnett May 1951

The Diophantine Equation, Frederic C. Barnett

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In the first part of Chapter II of this thesis a study is made of these surfaces Fn. In the second part of Chapter II, several differential geometric properties of Fn are adduced, and again, an attack based on certain of these is shown to lead to the very theorem we seek to prove. Finally, we obtain three geometrical implications of the assumption that an integral triad exists on Fn suggesting new lines of attack on the theorem of Fermat.

Inverse Problems Of Hamel-Type., Robert G. Schrandt May 1951

Inverse Problems Of Hamel-Type., Robert G. Schrandt

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The formulation and discussion of the simplest (fixed) end point direct problem of the calculus of Variation is a necessary preliminary to attack on the inverse problems considered in Chapters II and III of this thesis. Since the plane problem is already comprehensively treated in the literature, only enough of its theory is developed here to render intelligible to the reader the inverse problems studied in the sequel.

Anisotropism In Garnets, Arthur B. Merkle May 1951

Anisotropism In Garnets, Arthur B. Merkle

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Six anisotropic garnets are studied by optical, thermal, and X-ray diffraction methods in an attempt to determine the cause of anisotropism. The garnets are all ungrandites with compositions ranging from chromian grossularite to nearly pure andradite, the composition having been estimated from indices of refraction and unit cell dimensions. In all cases the birefringence is 0.004 or less. Both positive and negative uniaxial and biaxial figures are sometimes observed. Heating of the garnets at 900°C for periods of 96 to 264 hours reduced the anisotropism in five of the six garnets studied; this observation is in agreement with previously reported …

The Kinetics Of The Exchange Between Benzyl Iodide And Iodide Ion, Paul Stillson May 1951

The Kinetics Of The Exchange Between Benzyl Iodide And Iodide Ion, Paul Stillson

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A general form of an ion-molecule replacement reaction occurring at a saturated carbon atom may be represented by

Y-+R-X⇋Y-R+X-

where Y- is a negatively charged atom or group which can replace an atom or group X in the molecule R-X and R is any organic radical which is saturated at the point of attachment of X. The mechanisms which have been postulated for the above reaction may be divided into the following two groups: (1) those which assume primary dissociation of the neutral organic reaction into ions as the rate-determining step; (2) those which postulate the formation …

Sulphidizing Of Cerussite, Emil A. Kovacevich May 1951

Sulphidizing Of Cerussite, Emil A. Kovacevich

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The oxide minerals, such as cerussite, are not as amenable to flotation as the sulphide minerals. Sulphidization is the usual means used today to increase the recovery of an oxide flotation; however, sulphidization under the most advantageous conditions does not yield very satisfactory recoveries.

Faunal Studies Of The Lower Jefferson Limestones, James L. Eymann May 1951

Faunal Studies Of The Lower Jefferson Limestones, James L. Eymann

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The exact geologic age of the Jefferson limestone in Montana has not been definitely determined, other than it is probably of upper, but possibly in part of middle Devonian age. Although not of immediate or apparent economic importance, the determination of the exact age of the Jefferson limestone may be of much value in connection with the discoveries of large quantities of oil in Devonian strata in the northern Great Plains and, in particular, with the extensive deep drilling in northeastern Montana which is anticipated during the summer of 1951.

The Groundwater Of The Area North Of Flathead Lake, Montana, Frederick M. Hilpert May 1951

Differential Thermal Analysis Of Some Carbonate Minerals, Paul L. Vandeveer May 1951

Differential Thermal Analysis Of Some Carbonate Minerals, Paul L. Vandeveer

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Thermal analysis is a relatively new method of determining the general composition of certain mineral substances. As is demonstrated by much of the literature previously written, clays and carbonates are especially adaptable to this method. The full importance of the method is not as yet realized, but it is rapidly approaching that point.

The Influence Of Copper Upon The Age Hardening Properties Of Steel, Andre Rey May 1951

The Influence Of Copper Upon The Age Hardening Properties Of Steel, Andre Rey

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The virtues of alloy steels have been widely publicized in both technical literature and everyday advertising. Nearly everyone possessing a slight knowledge of metallurgy knows the beneficial effects of chromium in the manufacture of stainless steels, or the importance of nickel, molybdenum, vanadium, and other common elements used to alloy steels.

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Cadmium is produced solely as a by-product and all cadmium of commerce is obtained from zinc ores. It is a rare occurrence when zinc deposits are found which do not contain some cadmium.

Benefication Of A Tungsten Ore, James Alexander Shaffer Jr. May 1951

Benefication Of A Tungsten Ore, James Alexander Shaffer Jr.

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Tungsten is a metal of high strategic value in the defense effort. It is used chiefly to improve creep strength in steels, although a significant percentage enters into the manufacture of cemented carbide tool bits. Therefore, in this age of mechanized warfare, quality and quantity of defense production depend greatly on tungsten.

The Gallium-Indium Constitutional Diagram, Richard E. Gaffney May 1951

The Gallium-Indium Constitutional Diagram, Richard E. Gaffney

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Because of the discrepancy as to whether there is solid solubility in the gallium-indium system, and the fact that no alloys with less than 1% indium were ever investigated; the possibility of solid solubility in either or both ends of the diagram was not overlooked. According to Hume-Rothery, two alloys with the same relative positions on the Periodic Chart should have about the same alloying habits.
