A Management Study Of The Cache Elk Herd, Norman V. Hancock May 1955

A Management Study Of The Cache Elk Herd, Norman V. Hancock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

American elk, by virtue of their distribution, were the most cosmopolitan members of the cervid family at the time of white settlement of North America. At this early date elk were present in every major region of what is now continental United States, as well as in northern Mexico. they likewise were abundant in upper and lower Canada, though records do Lot corroborate their presence too far north on the Atlantic coast. Although generally existent throughout the western states, elk were sparsely distributed in Nevada, southern Utah, and most of Arizona and New Mexico. Paucity of elk was also noted …

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Conditions On The Absorption Of Phosphorus By Plants From Calcareous Soils, T. J. Denman May 1955

The Influence Of Soil Moisture Conditions On The Absorption Of Phosphorus By Plants From Calcareous Soils, T. J. Denman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Phosphorus is one of the major plant nutrients secured from the soil. The object of many investigations has been to discover the nature of the processes by which the soil supplies phosphorus to plants, and to determine the influence of soil factors upon these processes. Although much knowledge has been gained, these processes and the effects of soil factors upon them are still not clearly defined.

One factor which profoundly affects plant growth is the amount and relative availability of soil moisture. The results of some investigations have suggested that this factor may also have considerable influence on the absorption …

The Salt Lake Group In Cache Valley, Utah And Idaho, Robert D. Adamson May 1955

The Salt Lake Group In Cache Valley, Utah And Idaho, Robert D. Adamson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fluvial and lacustrine sediments of great thickness accumulated in the intermountain basins of the western United States during Tertiary time. The Salt Lake group in northern Utah and parts of surrounding states is a conspicuous stratigraphic unit of these basins. The "beds of light color" in Morgan Valley in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah were named the "Salt Lake group" by Hayden (1869) because of similar occurrences in Salt Lake Valley and because he reasoned that the succession could be divided into formations. Similar rocks crop out in Ogden Valley, north of Morgan Valley, and in Cache Valley, Utah …

Various Ways Of Preventing The Formation Of Scale In Sea Water Evaporators, James M. Stanek Apr 1955

Various Ways Of Preventing The Formation Of Scale In Sea Water Evaporators, James M. Stanek

Bachelors’ Theses

Previous work carried out at Marquette University has proved that the formation of scale in sea water evaporators can be prevented if such things as dehydrated alfalfa foliage or dehydrated corn, oats, peas, and grass foliage are added to the feed sea water. It has also been proved that the maturity of the plant from which the corn foliage has been stripped varies the scale preventing ability of the foliage, and that the storing of the corn foliage increases its scale preventing ability. The object of this work is to determine what effect the combination of various types of stainless …

Two Unusual Occurrences Of Microstylolites, Benjamin H. Burma, Charles M. Riley Mar 1955

Two Unusual Occurrences Of Microstylolites, Benjamin H. Burma, Charles M. Riley

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Microstylolites are here reported in both quartzite and in welded tuff. Descriptions of these unusual occurrences and accompanying photomicrographs suggest difficulties in applying the widely held theory of pressure-solution for the origin of these features.

Paleosols Of The Oligocene Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Cyril Harvey Mar 1955

Paleosols Of The Oligocene Of Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner, Cyril Harvey

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Prominent paleosol ("buried" or "fossil" soil) complexes occur at the top of the middle Orella, upper Orella, lower Whitney, and upper Whitney in the Brule formation of Nebraska; and at the top of the "Lower Oreodon," "Middle Oreodon," "Upper Oreodon," and "Leptauchenia" beds in the Brule deposits of South Dakota. These paleosols have regional distribution and appear to be of value in stratigraphic correlations. Major faunal breaks seem to coincide with important buried soil zones, thus indicating that certain paleosols actually represent unconformities. Some of the soils were developed on old land surfaces where deposition was practically at a standstill …

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn Mar 1955

Industrial Wastes, Charles E. Renn

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This paper presents a summary of experiences with a variety of cyanogenic wastes. The work has attempted to evaluate the interaction of waste bearing waters and the environment in terms of waste disposal design requirements. In this, the approach is somewhat more critical than that commonly taken by fisheries biologists, conservationists, and others who have been concerned with the "preventive" aspects of waste disposal.

The first phases of the work were designed to discover the tolerable limits of certain waste components to fresh water fish. This was undertaken in 1950; in the interval the composition of the wastes has been …

Birds Of Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, Ian Mctaggart Cowan

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Jasper Park, with an area of approximately 4 200 square miles, is the largest accessible primeval wildlife sanctuary on this continent and as such its bird lite is of the greatest interest. The meagre available records of earlier conditions indicate that noteworthy changes in the park's avifauna have taken place in the last ,0 years. There can be little doubt that other changes will take place during the years to come. For this reason, then, if tor no other, it seems desirable that as complete a record as possible of the current situation be made, for only against it can …

Some Remarks On Elementary Divisor Rings Ii, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1955

Some Remarks On Elementary Divisor Rings Ii, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A commutative ring S with identity element 1 is called an elementary divisor ring (resp. Hermite ring) if for every matrix A over S there exist nonsingular matrices P, Q such that PAQ (resp. AQ) is a diagonal matrix (resp. triangular matrix). It is clear that every elementary divisor ring is an Hermite ring, and that every Hermite ring is an F-ring (that is, a commutative ring with identity in which all finitely generated ideals are principal).

An Isomorphism Theorem For Real-Closed Fields, P. Erdös, L. Gillman, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1955

An Isomorphism Theorem For Real-Closed Fields, P. Erdös, L. Gillman, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

A classical theorem of Steinitz states that the characteristic of an algebraically closed fields, together with its absolute degree of transcendency, uniquely determine the field (up to isomorphism). It is easily seen that the word real-closed cannot be substituted for the words algebraically closed in this theorem. It is therefore natural to inquire what invariants other than the absolute transcendence degree are needed in order characterize a real-closed field.
