Stilling Coastal Sand Drifts With Marram Grass, J L. Mcmullan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

DRIFTS in dunes on the coast between Albany and Geraldton may be stabilised by planting marram grass (Ammophila arenaria).

However, it should be anticipated that much of the planted grass will die before an area is finally stabilised.

Water For Agriculture. 2. Plants For Salty Water, C V. Malcolm Jan 1962

Water For Agriculture. 2. Plants For Salty Water, C V. Malcolm

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALL natural water supplies contain dissolved salts. In wet climates these salts are usually not present in sufficient quantity to cause plant damage.

However, in Western Australia many natural water supplies contain harmful amounts of dissolved salts.

Water For Agriculture. 3. Watering Plants With Salty Water, Stanley Thomas Smith Jan 1962

Water For Agriculture. 3. Watering Plants With Salty Water, Stanley Thomas Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In Western Australia it is often necessary to use saline water for irrigation and gardening because of the lack of better water.

Two factors influence the results achieved. One is the selection of suitable plants, the other is the way in which the water is used.

Paspalum Vaginatum For Salty Seepages, C V. Malcolm Jan 1962

Paspalum Vaginatum For Salty Seepages, C V. Malcolm

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Paspalum vaginatum, aptly termed "sea shore paspalum" has over the last fifteen years shown an amazing ability to thrive in wet salty situations.

Seed of the grass is not available but it may easily be established by planting pieces.

This article reviews where and how the grass may be used.

Light Lands In Western Australia. 2. Their Nature, Distribution And Climate, George Henry Burvill Jan 1962

Light Lands In Western Australia. 2. Their Nature, Distribution And Climate, George Henry Burvill

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LIGHT land development for agriculture is a major feature in the story of agriculture in Western Australia. Sixty years ago there was less than one million acres of arable land.

The total area planted to all crops was less than 250 thousand acres and the wheat harvest was less than one million bushels.

Water For Agriculture. 4. Clearing Cloudy Or Muddy Water, R C. Gorman Jan 1962

Water For Agriculture. 4. Clearing Cloudy Or Muddy Water, R C. Gorman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Water made cloudy by finely divided clay, silt or organic matter in suspension may be cleared by simple chemical treatment.

The selection of a satisfactory treatment is often a matter of practical testing.

A Middle Miocene Rhinoceros Quarry In Morrill County, Nebraska (With Notes On Hip Disease In Diceratherium), Robert M. Stecher, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1962

A Middle Miocene Rhinoceros Quarry In Morrill County, Nebraska (With Notes On Hip Disease In Diceratherium), Robert M. Stecher, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Extensive deposits of fossil rhinoceros bones have been excavated from University of Nebraska State Museum collecting localities Mo-113, -114, -115, -116, and -118 some 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 miles north of Bridgeport, Morrill County, Nebraska. The fossils were associated with other faunal elements in the lower portion of the Marsland formation (middle Miocene) of the Hemingford group. The rhinoceros is considered to be Diceratherium niobrarensis Peterson, geologic variety. A pathologic right femur of D. niobrarensis provides evidence of hip disease in the medial Miocene rhinoceroses.

Early Records Of Some Mammals From Nebraska, J. Knox Jones Jr. Jan 1962

Early Records Of Some Mammals From Nebraska, J. Knox Jones Jr.

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Ten species of Recent mammals that formerly occurred in Nebraska have been extirpated there by European man. Surprisingly few specimens of the species concerned are preserved in museum collections. Perusal of a representative segment of the historical literature pertaining to Nebraska has revealed records of occurrence of most of the extirpated species that provide a basis for estimating the former distribution of each in the State.

On The Structure Of A Class Of Archimedean Lattice-Ordered Algebras, Melvin Henriksen, D. G. Johnson Jan 1962

On The Structure Of A Class Of Archimedean Lattice-Ordered Algebras, Melvin Henriksen, D. G. Johnson

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

By a Φ-algebra A, we mean an Archimedean lattice-ordered algebra over the real field R which has an identity element 1 that is a weak order unit. The Φ-algebras constitute the class of the title. It is shown that every ф-algebra is isomorphic to an algebra of continuous functions on a compact space X into the two-point compactification of the real line R, each of which is real-valued on an (open) everywhere dense subset of X. Under more restrictive assumptions on A, ropresentations of this sort have long been known. An (incomplete) history of them …

Frost Injury Of Wheat, S C. Chambers Jan 1962

Frost Injury Of Wheat, S C. Chambers

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Late spring frosts commonly reduce yields and affect the quality of grain in many wheat crops- especially throughout the southern, eastern and north-eastern districts.

The damage is usually localised on individual farms, but occasionally widespread damage occurs in the south of the State.

Winter Management Of Salt Land, T C. Stoneman Jan 1962

Winter Management Of Salt Land, T C. Stoneman

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WITH the emergence of crops, many farmers will again be seeing bare patches or thin stands of cereals due to salt accumulation.

Would these areas be better left out of cultivation, or should they have been planted to saltbush and bluebush?

A Matrix Formulation Of The Least-Squares Method And Its Application To Nuclear Decay Schemes, Otto Harry Otteson Jan 1962

A Matrix Formulation Of The Least-Squares Method And Its Application To Nuclear Decay Schemes, Otto Harry Otteson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many people call physics an ''exact science". This may be true depending on our definition of exact. Most dictionaries include as a definition of exact the words "strictly accurate". The average man thinks of an "exact science" as one which yields "strictly accurate'' results. Physics then is exact only to a degree.

Studies Involving Modification Of The Megregian Method Of Fluoride Determination And Application To Fluoride Balance Studies In Infants, Gene R. Wright

Masters Theses

Introduction

At the request of Dr. Frederick Margolis, M.D., and in association with The Upjohn Company, this research problem was initiated as a participation in the investigation of whether or not fluoride ingested as a constituent of the Upjohn 47-M liquid vitamin preparation is retained in an infant's body to the same extent as is fluoride ingested as the sodium salt by itself--either in solution or in tablet form. The retention patterns may be studied indirectly by measuring the amounts of fluoride excreted in the urine and in the feces during each of a series of equal time intervals after …
