The Measurement Of The Life-Time Of The 62P3/2 State Of Thallium, Danny Hale Sokolowski Jan 1963

The Measurement Of The Life-Time Of The 62P3/2 State Of Thallium, Danny Hale Sokolowski

Masters Theses

The measurement of the lifetime of the metastable 62P3/2 state of thallium is discussed. Time-sampling equipment techniques and instantaneous methods of display on an oscilloscope for measuring the lifetime are explained. The lifetime is measured as a function of mercury vapor pressure. The decay of the 5350 A thallium line is also measured to give an indication of the effect of the imprisonment of the 3776 A resonance line. This decay of the 5350 A line is also in a mercury atmosphere"--Abstract, page ii.

Spin Relaxation Of Optically Pumped Rubidium., Kenneth Brian Steinbruegge

Masters Theses

"This Thesis is intended to be a self-contained guide to the theory and experimental procedures of optical pumping in one of its most usual applications. A particular study is made of optical pumping of rubidium vapor and results are given stating the most efficient temperature range in which to produce large populations of optically oriented rubidium atoms. The thermal relaxation time for optically orientated rubidium for a particular system is given and the effect of trapped resonance radiation is considered in the interpretation of the experimentally obtained curves"--Abstract, p. ii

The Application Of Quantum-Mechanical Concepts To Biological Systems, Andrew A. Cochran Jan 1963

The Application Of Quantum-Mechanical Concepts To Biological Systems, Andrew A. Cochran

Masters Theses

"The relation between quantum-mechanical concepts and biological systems is explored by studying the relation of both to the concepts of heat capacity and entropy. It is shown that the most important substances in living matter have extremely low heat capacities and entropies at ordinary temperatures. A critical analysis of the two types of quantum-mechanical interactions between particles and the interactions occurring in low-entropy systems shows that the wave properties of matter are strongly predominant in the chemical elements that constitute 99 percent of living matter. It is concluded that the wave aspects of matter are strongly predominant in biological systems. …

Survey Of Job Satisfaction Among Ancillary Personnel, Helen Brown Austin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

On the assumption that there is less turnover and optimum performance among employees who receive a high level of Job satisfaction, this study was undertaken to obtain data that administration could use in evaluating Job satisfaction among ancillary personnel.

The normative-survey was the method chosen and a standardized tool, the S.R.A, Employee Inventory, developed by the Science Research Associates of the University of Chicago, was employed for collecting the data. Ninety-five per cent of the ancillary staff, in the selected hospital, participated in the study. After tallying the responses to the questionnaire items, the results were sent to the Science …

An Investigation Of Drift-Covered Environments Using The Shallow Reflection Seismic Method, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Thomas Patrick Luby Dec 1962

An Investigation Of Drift-Covered Environments Using The Shallow Reflection Seismic Method, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Thomas Patrick Luby

Masters Theses

Seismic work utilizing a six-channel analog seismograph and a hammer impact source successfully obtained coherent reflection events from horizon within the glacial overburden, from the drift-paleozoic interface, and from Paleozoic bedrock targets. Fieldwork was conducted in eight drift-covered environments where the drift thickness varied from 80 feet to greater than 500 feet. Factors that exerted a major control over the seismic response at each environment studied include the depth of the water table, the type of surface material underlying the shot point and geophone spread, and the use of single versus multiple geophones per channel. Each of these factors influenced …

Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell Nov 1962

Development Of Water Quality Criteria For Aquatic Life, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

It is now recognized that water pollution is an important problem, that it becomes more widespread and serious as population and industry expand, and that something must be done if aquatic life resource are to be saved and their productivity maintained. In the past there has been a great deal of uncertainty in approaching this situation and a general lack of understanding of the details and ramification of the overall problem. In the efforts for the abatement of pollution, only a few clearcut objectives have been established. Knowledge is lacking as to what the objectives should be. There is still …

Kinetic Investigation Of The Hydrochlorination Of Olefins In Aprotic Solvents And Sulfonation Of Idobenzene And The Selectivity Relation, Thomas Glen Davies Sep 1962

Kinetic Investigation Of The Hydrochlorination Of Olefins In Aprotic Solvents And Sulfonation Of Idobenzene And The Selectivity Relation, Thomas Glen Davies

Theses and Dissertations

Kinetic investigation of the hydrochlorination of cyclohexene and cis-2-butene in n-heptane with SnCl4 as catalyst shows that the reaction is second order with respect to both olefin and catalyst. The specific rate constants at 25° , 0° and -23.8°C and the activation parameters were determined. Investigation of the Ga2Cl6 catalyzed hydrochlorination of cyclohexene and cis-2-butene in dichloromethane indicates that alkylation and polymerization compete with the hydrochlorination reaction in the presence of the solvent. The relative reaction rates and the isomer distribution for the sulfonation of iodobenzene by S35O3 have been determined in refluxing SO2 at -10°C. The reaction resulted in …

On The Velocity Of Sound In Cubic Crystals, Stuart Fleming Hayes Aug 1962

On The Velocity Of Sound In Cubic Crystals, Stuart Fleming Hayes

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The object of this inquiry is to examine the relation between plane wave sound velocities in cubic crystals and the elastic constants of such crystals. Leading directly into this an extensive treatment of the classical theory of elasticity as it pertains to the cubic system. An application of the results will be made by detailing a means for obtaining the elastic constants of plastic single-crystals from measurements of velocity made on poly crystalline specimens.

Sulfonation Of Chlorobenzene And The Selectivity Relation ; Bromine Addition To Cyclohexene In Dichloromethane ; Thorpe's Synthesis Of The Caged Acid, 4-Methyltricyclo[1.1.0.0[Superscript 2-4]] Butane-1,2,3-Tricarboxylic Acid, John A. Gurney

Theses and Dissertations

Aromatic sulfonation and some substitution reactions of chlorobenzene show deviations in the selectivity relation. A determination of chlorobenzene sulfonation provided the following rate ratio relative to benzene and partial rate factors: 1.0, [---] of 0.064 , mf 1.7 and pf 4. 2. Our work, Olah's nitration, Ferguson's bromination and Stock's chlorination define a new relation that can be express by adding an entropy term (A) to the selectivity relation. We determined the rate of bromine-cyclohexene addition in dichloro-methane at 0° to provide a basis for a systematic variation of solvents at low temperature. An unusual zero-order reaction was encountered. The …

Dissertation In Organic Chemistry. Part I, The Fate Of The Anilino Moiety In The Rearrangement Of Α-Anilonoketones. Part Ii, Partial Rate Factors For Sulfonation Of Bromebenzene With Sulfur Trioxide. Part Iii., Preliminary Survey On The Effect Of High Pressure On Ferrocene And Cycloöctatetraene, Jerold Carter Robertson

Theses and Dissertations

Part I. The rearrangement of α-anilinoketones was studied in an effort to determine the mode of movement of the nitrogen moiety. A crossover experiment was carried out with an equimolar mixture of 2-(4- bromoanilino)-1-(4-bromophenyl)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl) ethanone and 2-(4-chloroanilino)-1-(4-chlorophenyl) -2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanone with γ- picoline hydrobromide as the catalyst. The reaction product was analysed by means of a mass spectrograph. The results of the analysis indicate a crossover of the nitrogen moiety during rearrangement. This indicates that the nitrogen moiety moves in an intermolecular manner during the rearrangement. Part II. The isomer distribution from the sulfonation of bromobenzene with sulfur trioxide was determined by …

Some Problems Of Ergodic Theory And Information Theory., K. R. Parthasarathy Dr. Jul 1962

Some Problems Of Ergodic Theory And Information Theory., K. R. Parthasarathy Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The subject of ergodic theory which is the mathematical outgrowth of the gas problem in statistical machines and the subject of information theory which in the mathematical outgrowth of the problem of information transmission through communication channels have many interesting dual features. In ergodic theory we study collectively and individually the measure preserving transformations of a first measure space, where as in information theory we do the same with the set of all measured in variant under a fixed measurable transformation of a measurable space. The object of this thesis it to study some of the dual relations between the …

Some Problems Of Estimation In Sampling From Finite Populations., M. Murthy Dr. Jul 1962

Some Problems Of Estimation In Sampling From Finite Populations., M. Murthy Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis the results of the research work done by the author in the field of sample surveys are presented. Scheme problems of estimation in sampling from finite populations were taken up for reset arch. A brief summary of this thesis is given below. In chapter 1, the author has developed a generalized theory of getting unbiased estimator for a certain class of parameters in sampling from finite population. The class of parameters considered are those which can be expressed as the sum of single-valued set functions defined over a class of sets of units belonging to a finite population. …
