Landforms in the Missouri Coteau district include dead-ice moraine, end moraine, disintegration ridges, collapsed …

Self-Diffusion Of Ions In Gels, Thomas Caldwell Smith Jan 1963

Self-Diffusion Of Ions In Gels, Thomas Caldwell Smith

Master's Theses

Radioisotope tracer techniques were used to determine the self-diffusion coefficients of the ions of sodium, potassium, cesium, chloride, bromide, and iodide in 3% agar gel, and the self-diffusion coefficient of the sodium ion in gelatin-agar gels at differing pH values of the gel.

The coefficients in agar gels were found to be in agreement with the Nernst equation for the diffusion coefficients of ions in aqueous solution. 'l'he diffusion coefficients in gelatin-agar gels were found to be higher in the presence of non-active NaCl than in its absence. The value of the coefficient was lower at the isoelectric point of …

Preparation Of The Cis And Trans Isomers Of Methylcyclohexanecarboxylic Acids And Their 2-Diethylaminoethyl Esters, Paul Allen Meulman Jan 1963

Preparation Of The Cis And Trans Isomers Of Methylcyclohexanecarboxylic Acids And Their 2-Diethylaminoethyl Esters, Paul Allen Meulman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this research is to prepare the CIS and TRANS isomers of the 2, 3 and 4-methylcyclohecanecarboxylic acids and their 2-diethylaminoethyl esters.

This series of compounds is of interest because of the anti-tumor activity shown by some ethanolamine derivatives. The compounds to be prepared in this study represent modifications of these structures to determine if further investigation in this area is worthwhile. A pharmacological evaluation of these compounds will be made since many esters of amino alcohols have demonstrated pharmacological activity. The cancer chemotherapeutic and pharmacological test results are not included in this paper, but will be …

Masters Theses

"The purpose of the present study is to discuss the boundary value problems leading to equations exemplified by the four equations previously mentioned and to write a program for an I.B.M. computer in Fortran II language as a contribution to the numerical solution of an important class of linear and nonlinear differential equations"--Introduction, page 4.

An Investigation Of The Acceleration Of Neutrons, Charles Edward Byvik Jan 1963

An Investigation Of The Acceleration Of Neutrons, Charles Edward Byvik

Masters Theses

"The acceleration of neutrons via their magnetic dipole moment in an axially symmetric magnetic field is considered. Conditions for bunching are derived and expressions for the off-axis forces are developed. It was found that neutrons off axis are forced back onto the axis and that neutrons slightly depolarized remain in their initial state. A calculation of the acceleration is made using the field of a current loop and the conclusion is that under present laboratory capabilities a neutron accelerator is not feasible"--Abstract, page ii.

The Construction And Analysis Of An Amplifier For Ultrasonic Research, Jerry John Koelling Jan 1963

The Construction And Analysis Of An Amplifier For Ultrasonic Research, Jerry John Koelling

Masters Theses

“An amplifier to be used for ultrasonic pulse methods was constructed and tested. The frequency range lies between 100 cycles per second and 2 mega-cycles per second and, if tuned circuit plug-in units are used, may be increased to approximately 4 mega-cycles per second. Special demands upon the amplifier are discussed along with basic acoustic attenuation measurements in solid state physics”--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Methods For Determining Confidence Intervals For The Mean Of A Normal Distribution With Unknown Varience By Comparison Of Average Lengths, Karl Richard Kneile

Masters Theses

“The purpose of this thesis is to briefly review various properties which may be desirable for a system of confidence intervals; and to empirically determine whether the system of confidence intervals obtained from the Student’s t distribution will produce shorter average lengths than those obtained by other methods which may be used. It was concluded from the results of an empirical investigation that there was no significant difference between the average lengths of confidence intervals obtained from a family of distributions of which the Student’s t is a member"--Abstract, page ii.

The Location Of Underground Points By Means Of A Magnetic Dipole, Anthony Del Prete Jr. Jan 1963

The Location Of Underground Points By Means Of A Magnetic Dipole, Anthony Del Prete Jr.

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to design, construct, and test an electromagnet that could, from an underground location, generate a magnetic field which could be located at the surface, and that was portable enough to be carried through a cave. This could then be used to locate points in a cave relative to the surface.

A 20 foot solenoid composed of four five-foot sections was built and magnetized by a lightweight rechargeable four-cell eight volt battery. The total weight of the equipment was 30 pounds.

The magnet was calibrated by erecting it and measuring its vertical intensity with a …

A Preliminary Report On The Itasca Bison Site, Creighton T. Shay

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In the summer of 1937 excavations conducted by the University of Minnesota Anthropology Department in Itasca State Park yielded extinct bison and other animal remains along with several stone artifacts. A preliminary notice was published in Science shortly after excavation was completed (Jenks, 193 7). The bones were extracted from a marl layer underlying a peat bog near the south end of the west arm of Lake Itasca. The deposit was discovered during construction of a road bridge over Nicollet Creek adjacent to the site. Material in the following report was assembled from unpublished field notes and records on file …

Geology Of The Unconsolidated Deposits Of Lake County, Indiana, Reuben J. Vig Jan 1963

Geology Of The Unconsolidated Deposits Of Lake County, Indiana, Reuben J. Vig

Theses and Dissertations

Lake County is in the extreme northwestern corner of Indiana. The county is divided into three physiographic units: (1) Calumet lake plain, (2) Valparaiso moraine, (3) Kankakee glacioflucial plain.

The Calumet lake plain was covered by glacial Lake Chicago. Beach lines show the areal extent of the various phase of the lake’s history. The Valparaiso moraine, a broad upland, trends east-west across the county. An end moraine on the north side of this upland is correlated with the Tinley moraine in Illinois. The Kankakee glaciofluvial plain, formerly marshland, slopes gently from the Valparaiso moraine to the Kankakee River.

The bedrock …

Hydrogeology Of Reservoir Sites In The Meramec River Basin, Missouri., John H. Anderson Jan 1963

Hydrogeology Of Reservoir Sites In The Meramec River Basin, Missouri., John H. Anderson

Masters Theses

"Governmental and private agencies have proposed construction of multiple purpose dams in the Meramec River Basin for flood control, conservation, recreation and possible power development. Evaluation of the effects of reservoirs created by these dams on ground water conditions has not been published. Study of possible effects led to the thesis that prediction of changes in ground water conditions could be made.

Several limited applications of ground water geology techniques to the problem of reservoir-ground water relations were studied; no thorough previous studies were found. Apparently, complete studies have not been undertaken by even the larger agencies.

Inspection of the …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Frank D. Holland, Jr. and was approved by Wilson M. Laird and George C. Wheeler as members of the examining committee, of which Dr. Holland was Chairman.

Geologic and paleontologic evidence indicates that numerous mesotropic, temperate, water bodies were present while drift-covered bloacks of stagnant glacier ice, unplaced during Woodfordian (late Wisconsinan, Pleistocene) time, underlay the Missouri Coteau district (approximately 50 by 300 miles in extent) in central North Dakota.

Fossil mollusks, contained in sediments deposited in contact with the stagnant ice at 40 sites, are represented by 23 species …

A Paleontological Study Of The Gunflint Microfossil Assemblage, J. William Schopf Jan 1963

A Paleontological Study Of The Gunflint Microfossil Assemblage, J. William Schopf

Honors Papers

Precambrian microfossils discovered in nonferruginous charts of the lower "algal" members of the Gunflint formation of southern Ontario are of great interest in the evolutionary scheme of primitive life. The environment of deposition of the deposit, and the indigenous and biogenic nature of the microfossil assemblage are considered. A discussion of the small but diversified assemblage, including twelve micro-forms, seven of which have not previously been reported, is presented.

Pegmatites Of The Anderson Ridge Quadrangle, Fremont County, Wyoming, Hassan A. Etr

Masters Theses

“The oldest rocks in the area consist mainly of para- schists of low to medium rank and restricted higher rank sillimanite schist. The entire series has been at least double folded. The most apparent are tight north to north- east trending folds. These have been intruded in the northern part of the area by a batholithic body of granitic composition, a granitic stock, a pegmatitic granite, a granitic sill-like body and different types of pegmatite dikes and sills. The youngest intrusions are a series of northeast trending basic dikes and sills. A major easterly trending transverse fault and a series …
