Behind The Screen: A Comprehensive Framework For Digital Work Metrics And Data Integration, F. Demaria, A. Papana Dagiasis, M. Cavicchioli, T. Fabbri

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The digital transformation and the subsequent datafication of work generate rich electronic traces that can be transformed into actionable insights through modern analytics. In this context, this study proposes a data-driven framework that leverages sidClustering and unsupervised Random Forest (RF) for clustering and feature selection, constructs composite indicators via multiple aggregation strategies, and employs visual tools to enhance the interpretability of results. A key feature of the framework is the integration of two data sources: click metadata from Microsoft 365 and employee attitudes measured through a questionnaire. This integration enables the analysis of digital work behavior (DWB) in relation to …

Ai Interview Helper: A Tool For Assisting Search And Rescue Long-Profile Interviews, Dylan P. Starink Jun 2026

Ai Interview Helper: A Tool For Assisting Search And Rescue Long-Profile Interviews, Dylan P. Starink

Master's Theses

In Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, time pressure and limited interviewer experience can lead to missed opportunities when interviewing a missing person’s friends and family. This thesis presents a real-time, end-to-end system that provides context-aware follow-up question suggestions as interviews unfold. Leveraging large language models (LLMs) and agentic design patterns, the system is intended to support interviewers by helping them identify relevant follow-up questions and pursue potentially overlooked lines of inquiry.

The system was evaluated through three mock interviews with two SAR interviewer participants across two events. Given the limited sample size, the results provide early insights into the feasibility …

Equitable Decompositions: A Gateway To Spectral Theory Through Graph Automorphisms, Daniel Ford Jun 2026

Equitable Decompositions: A Gateway To Spectral Theory Through Graph Automorphisms, Daniel Ford

Master's Theses

Graphs with symmetry appear throughout mathematics and its applications, from the structure of molecules and network design to combinatorial game theory. A central question in spectral graph theory is how to compute or characterise the eigenvalues of the matrices associated with such graphs. Classical decomposition methods, such as diagonalisation or Jordan normal form, accomplish this but only once some spectral information is already known. A different approach, introduced by Barrett et al. (2015), uses the automorphisms of a graph to block-diagonalise its adjacency matrix without any prior spectral information. Because one of the resulting summands is always the quotient matrix …

Determining K Clusters In K-Means Clustering With The Crab Algorithm, Jasmine Kristine S. Cabrera Jun 2026

Determining K Clusters In K-Means Clustering With The Crab Algorithm, Jasmine Kristine S. Cabrera

Master's Theses

Unsupervised clustering often faces the challenge of determining the correct number of clusters in the absence of a true target variable. Traditional methods such as the Elbow Method and the Silhouette Score can produce ambiguous results and rely on assumptions about cluster shape or separation. To address this, we created the Clustering Rivals and Buddies (CRAB) algorithm which evaluates clusters based on stability across multiple subsamples. CRAB uses pairwise classifications to identify points that consistently group together called “Buddies” and points that remain separated called “Rivals.” Applied with K-means, CRAB accurately recovers underlying cluster structures in both spherical and non-spherical …

Thermally Induced Color Changes In Iron Oxide Containing Coatings, Tabatha Whitfield Jun 2026

Thermally Induced Color Changes In Iron Oxide Containing Coatings, Tabatha Whitfield

Master's Theses

Wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires and residential conflagrations present significant challenges for post-fire damage and fire propagation analysis. CAL FIRE observed reddening in architectural coatings during the 2025 Pacific Palisades fire with no determination of the cause. While heat-induced color change of infrastructure coatings has been studied, its potential use as a thermal exposure indicator in residential fire events remains largely unexplored. The objective of this study was to characterize the heat-induced color change of yellow iron oxide containing coatings subjected to thermal exposures, replicating residential fire conditions. The coatings were applied to commonly used building materials and exposed to direct …

(R2133) Analysis Of A Bulk Queue With Balking, Adaptive Overloading Service, Multiple Vacation, Inspection And Rework, S. Karpagam, R. Lokesh Jun 2026

(R2133) Analysis Of A Bulk Queue With Balking, Adaptive Overloading Service, Multiple Vacation, Inspection And Rework, S. Karpagam, R. Lokesh

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We consider a queueing system that utilizes a single server to manage product flow through bulk and overload service modes, depending on queue length. Balking occurs when the queue length reaches ‘N’. After completion of service, products undergo quality inspection, with defective products sent for rework based on specific probabilities. If the product is non-defective, the server continues processing until the queue length exceeds a certain threshold; beyond this point, the server is either routed back to bulk service or directed to an overload service. Also, the server goes into a vacation mode when the queue size is below a …

Emotional Support Through Ai: Venting To Artificial Intelligence Or A Perceived Human May Offer Comparable Emotional Well-Being Benefits, Meilan Hu, Jerlyn Q. H. Ho, Claire Ng, Shermaine S. M. Wong, Andree Hartanto Jun 2026

Emotional Support Through Ai: Venting To Artificial Intelligence Or A Perceived Human May Offer Comparable Emotional Well-Being Benefits, Meilan Hu, Jerlyn Q. H. Ho, Claire Ng, Shermaine S. M. Wong, Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly being explored as sources of informal emotional support, with emerging evidence suggesting that venting to these systems can reduce negative affect. Yet, it remains unclear whether such benefits depend on the responder's perceived identity. Given that emotional relief from venting often hinges on perceived authenticity and emotional validation, this study investigates whether the emotional well-being benefits of venting differ when users believe they are interacting with an AI chatbot versus a human, even when responses are content-matched. In a pre-registered experiment ( N = 279), participants were randomly assigned to either an AI-assisted venting …

The Can Challenge: Understanding The Best Ways To Incentivise Recycling Through A Diffusion Approach, Michael Brock, Lucia M. Murgia, Stefania Sitzia, Jiwei Zheng Jun 2026

The Can Challenge: Understanding The Best Ways To Incentivise Recycling Through A Diffusion Approach, Michael Brock, Lucia M. Murgia, Stefania Sitzia, Jiwei Zheng

All Works

Understanding the best ways to incentivise recycling and improve the efficiency of waste practices is a key environmental, social, and economic management problem that needs addressing. We search for solutions to this issue by testing the effectiveness of two incentive mechanisms (a piece-rate and a lottery-based systems). We run a similar field experiment in three different locations, namely a student, residential and workplace environment, to verify the robustness of our findings and thus increase confidence in the external validity of our intervention. By interpreting recycling activity as marketable service, we employ a diffusion model to analyse the potential adoption of the …

The Implementation Of Scintillation Detectors With The Cuore/Cupid Collaboration In The Search For Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay, Reese Sandra Cormier Jun 2026

The Implementation Of Scintillation Detectors With The Cuore/Cupid Collaboration In The Search For Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay, Reese Sandra Cormier

Physics

CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is an experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Assergi, Italy, currently searching for an answer to the matter-antimatter asymmetry problem; the question: why do we exist? One proposed explanation is neutrinoless double beta decay, a theorized exotic decay that would prove that neutrinos are their own antiparticle, violating the current Standard Model for particle physics. However, current detection methods do not distinguish different types of particle interactions, resulting in alpha decays contributing to the background. Therefore, the experimental sensitivity is too limited to make confident determinations about the data. For this …

Gauss Composition And Orthogonal Modular Forms On Binary Lattices, Haochen Wu Jun 2026

Gauss Composition And Orthogonal Modular Forms On Binary Lattices, Haochen Wu

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

We revisit Gauss composition over a general base scheme, with a focus on orthogonal groups. We show that the Clifford and norm functors provide a discriminant-preserving equivalence of categories between binary quadratic modules and pseudoregular modules over quadratic algebras. This perspective synthesizes the constructions of Kneser and Wood, reconciling algebraic and geometric approaches and clarifying the role of orientations and the natural emergence of narrow class groups.

As an application, we restrict to lattices and show that binary orthogonal eigenforms correspond to Hecke characters. Using theta series, we show the explicit connection between Hilbert modular forms and orthogonal modular forms …

Incipient: Contemporary Wildfire Management In The American West, Carlyn A. Mcaleer Jun 2026

Incipient: Contemporary Wildfire Management In The American West, Carlyn A. Mcaleer

Environmental Studies Senior Theses

The frequency, severity, and total area burned by wildfires has escalated dramatically alongside a similar increase in federal suppression spending. However, contemporary management remains rooted in a suppression‑centric framework that originated in the early‑20th‑century. Our current wildfire management practices are unsustainable in the face of this growing threat. Using an approach that blends historical analysis and spatial analysis, this thesis asks how current spatial patterns of burn probability (BP) overlap with existing fire-response infrastructure and population in eight states (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming) in the American West and which barriers inhibit the adoption of proactive …

Investigation Of Warfarin–Human Serum Albumin Binding By Ultrafast Affinity Extraction Using Single- And Dual-Column Affinity Microcolumn Systems, Samiul Alim Jun 2026

Investigation Of Warfarin–Human Serum Albumin Binding By Ultrafast Affinity Extraction Using Single- And Dual-Column Affinity Microcolumn Systems, Samiul Alim

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation examined the interaction of warfarin with human serum albumin (HSA) by using affinity chromatography, with particular emphasis on ultrafast affinity extraction (UAE) and affinity microcolumns. HSA affinity supports were prepared by immobilizing HSA onto diol-bonded silica via Schiff base chemistry and used to prepare affinity microcolumns for chromatographic studies under physiological-like conditions at pH 7.4 and 37.0 °C. UAE studies were performed to investigate the effects of residence time, flow rate, and column configuration on the measured apparent free fraction of warfarin and on the calculated apparent binding parameters. The results showed that the measured apparent free fraction …

Public Acceptance Of Meat-Reduction Policies Across Cultures: Comparing Singapore And Switzerland, Bianca Wassmann, Shu Tian Ng, Mark Chong, Angela K. Y. Leung, Michael Siegrist Jun 2026

Public Acceptance Of Meat-Reduction Policies Across Cultures: Comparing Singapore And Switzerland, Bianca Wassmann, Shu Tian Ng, Mark Chong, Angela K. Y. Leung, Michael Siegrist

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose – As meat-reduction policies are discussed across the globe, many are met with public resistance. Cultural values may help explain this pushback, yet their role in shaping support for food policy remains poorly understood. This study is the first to apply cultural cognition theory to food policy by examining how cultural worldviews shape the acceptance of meat-reduction interventions in Singapore and Switzerland—two economically developed countries with contrasting cultural profiles. Design/methodology/approach – In an online survey, participants (Singapore: n = 357; Switzerland: n = 495) rated their acceptance of 11 meat-reduction interventions (e.g. taxes, subsidies, labelling). We then analysed to …

Cloud Tank: Virtual Reality Performance Instrument For Embodied Audiovisual Remixing, Asya Ulger Jun 2026

Cloud Tank: Virtual Reality Performance Instrument For Embodied Audiovisual Remixing, Asya Ulger

Computer Science Senior Theses

Traditionally, live audiovisual performances are made behind a desk using a laptop and an audio controller. This setup restricts the performer’s movements and separates the artist from their work. Moreover, it narrows what counts as the performance to the output alone — the audience is preconditioned to treat the projected image and sound as the whole event, and not the artist producing it. Cloud Tank challenges this by positioning the performer’s body as the instrument, using virtual reality. As the performer, I mix spatialized audio and drive beat-aligned, reactive video layers through hand movement and hand-pose recognition. The audiovisual output …

The Security Of Llm-Generated Code, Christopher Brian Gonzalez Ayala Jun 2026

The Security Of Llm-Generated Code, Christopher Brian Gonzalez Ayala

Student Theses

The rapid adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) in software development has transformed coding practices by enabling automated code generation, completion, and optimization. Despite these advantages, concerns persist regarding the security and reliability of LLM-generated code. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of both the functional correctness and security of code produced by three prominent LLMs as of early 2026. A total of 4,800 code snippets were generated using 100 security-focused programming prompts derived from the OWASP Top 10:2025, translated across eight natural languages and two phrasing styles (literal and natural developer-oriented prompts). To assess performance, a multi-stage experimental framework …
