The Impact Of Climate Change On Select Ecosystems, Mary Snow, Richard Snow Sep 2015

The Impact Of Climate Change On Select Ecosystems, Mary Snow, Richard Snow

Publications

Terrestrial and marine environments are experiencing pronounced changes. As species and their ecosystems undergo rising temperatures, varying precipitation patterns and alterations in their chemistry and phenology, there is a great deal of added stress on many organisms. Many species attempting to adapt to a rapidly changing climate are forced to migrate or to become extinct. Forest communities are changing in composition as well as migrating northward. Often, roads, cities, and other forms of development physically impede migration. Some species are not able to migrate at the pace with which their ecosystems are warming. In some forest communities, southern boundaries are …

International Journal of Speleology

Kuumbi Cave is one of a group of caves that underlie a flight of marine terraces in Pleistocene limestone in eastern Zanzibar (Indian Ocean). Drawing on the findings of geoarchaeological field survey and archaeological excavation, we discuss the formation and evolution of Kuumbi Cave and its wider littoral landscape. In the later part of the Quaternary (last ca. 250,000 years?), speleogenesis and terrace formation were driven by the interplay between glacioeustatic sea level change and crustal uplift at rates of ca. 0.10-0.20 mm/yr. Two units of backreef/reef limestone were deposited during ‘optimal’ (highest) highstands, tentatively correlated with MIS 7 and …

Properties Of Multilayered Zno/Al/Zno Transparent Film Electrodes: Models And Experiments, E. R. Rwenyagila, M. E. Samiji

Tanzania Journal of Science

ZnO/Metal/ZnO multilayers have been recognized as good candidates for transparent conductive thin films for applications in solar cells and optoelectronic devices. One of the important challenges in the experimental designs of such structures is the lack of optimum metal thickness range such as Al in ZnO/Al/ZnO multilayers. The present work overcomes this limitation by investigating how Al thickness affects the optical properties of such multilayered films. In this paper, optical simulations are used to explore the possibility of ultrathin, high transparent ZnO/Al/ZnO multilayer films. Multilayered ZnO/Al/ZnO film with mid-Al layer thicknesses between 1 and 10 nm are shown to have …

Tanzania Journal of Science

This paper reports on the synthesis of 2-formyl-6-hydroxybenzoic acid (8) and 4-methoxyisobenzofuran-1,3-dione (10) from a renewable natural material Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) achieved in five and seven steps, respectively. Anacardic acid was isolated from CNSL, dimethoxylated into (E)-methyl 2-methoxy-6-(pentadec-8-enyl)benzoate which was subsequently hydrogenated into methyl 2-methoxy-6-pentadecylbenzoate. Benzylic bromination of the methoxyester, and dehydrobromination afforded (E)-methyl 2-methoxy-6-(pentadec-1-enyl)benzoate which upon ozonolysis gave methyl 2-formyl-6-methoxybenzoate. Oxidation and dehydration of 8 formed methoxyphthalic anhydride (10). The work reported in this paper has further demonstrated the resourcefulness of cashew nut shell liquid as a renewable natural resource for synthesis of fine and industrial chemicals.
