The Effect Of Alternating Current On The Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, William Howard Schumaker Jun 1931

The Effect Of Alternating Current On The Rectifying Properties Of Metallic Salts In Contact With Metals, William Howard Schumaker

Bachelors’ Theses

However much may be said regarding the advantages of direct current, there is little doubt at present, that from the viewpoint of power generation and transmission, alternating current has considerable advantages over direct current. While such is the case, there is, and probably always will be, a need for direct current. According to our present development, this direct current is indispensable in wireless work, radio, and in the laboratory test shops, where it is necessary to work with very sensitive meters, which are inexpensive and easy enough to secure for direct current measurements, but which necessitates an elaborate and costly …

The Fundamental Theorem Of Algebra, John D. Fitzpatrick Jun 1931

The Fundamental Theorem Of Algebra, John D. Fitzpatrick

Bachelors’ Theses

Algebra is indeed an interesting and intriguing field of knowledge. Many people fear and dread it, and yet what do they fear? Is not algebra a logical sequence of simple facts based perhaps on a few self-evident truths? If people saw the value of algebra, they would strive more enthusiastically to understand its principles. John Locke has a fitting commentary on those who are unfamiliar with algebra.

The Spray Test In Chromium-Plated Brass, Paul Siegel May 1931

The Spray Test In Chromium-Plated Brass, Paul Siegel

Bachelors’ Theses

For a great many years, the science of chromium plating has been investigated by eminent research workers in the domain of chemistry. The problem of deposition was solved some years ago by Carveth and Curry of Cornell University. At the present time there has accumulated such a vast mass of data upon the subject that it does not lie in the power of a single individual to obtain a truly thorough and comprehensive study of the entire problem in all of its aspects.

Substitution Of Hydrofluoric Acid For Sulphuric Acid In Chromium Plating, Leonard Schulze May 1931

Substitution Of Hydrofluoric Acid For Sulphuric Acid In Chromium Plating, Leonard Schulze

Bachelors’ Theses

Chromium plating or the electrodeposition of chromium from chromic acid baths has been an accomplished fact for almost a century. However, it has not been until the last few years that considerable attributive information has been published to make the mechanism of the process sufficiently understood to permit its commercial operation.1 Most of the scientific information published on chromium plating thus far is general there being very little specific information revealed as yet. Material, as shall be referred to occasionally, may be read about its early successful applications stressing the unusual properties, advantages, interests, and activities but very little …

A Volumetric Method Of Chromium Determination With Mercurous Nitrate, Gerald W. Lawton May 1931

A Volumetric Method Of Chromium Determination With Mercurous Nitrate, Gerald W. Lawton

Bachelors’ Theses

Boncyk in his research on potentiometric titrations, made the observation that apparently mercurous nitrate could be used to titrate chromic acid solution. He used potassium iodide as an outside indicator and found that a slight excess of mercurous nitrate gave a gray precipitate with potassium iodide solution. The precipitate seemed to indicate the end point, or the neutralization of the chromic acid; a slight excess of the mercurous nitrate causing the immediate formation of a gray precipitate. Not knowing the exact normality and purity of the solutions used, he could not ascertain whether the gray was the true end point, …

Hardness And Porosity In Chromium Plating, Waldemar Wick May 1931

Hardness And Porosity In Chromium Plating, Waldemar Wick

Bachelors’ Theses

In recent years chromium plating has been subjected to much research due to its ever-increasing demand. The results of these investigations have demonstrated the valuable properties of this plate. Of its many advantageous properties, hardness is one of the outstanding ones, but its application in industry is as yet not fully realized. This being due to the fact that it is difficult to produce a plate that is uniform and does not chip. Many chemists have investigated the porosity of the chromium plate in order to produce a coating that could be used for protective purposes, but there seems to …

The Giant Beaver, Castoroides, And The Common Beaver, Castor, In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Jan 1931

The Giant Beaver, Castoroides, And The Common Beaver, Castor, In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Respecting the giant beaver, Castoroides, in Nebraska, four occurrences can be reported. Of rodents in general the dawn. was in the early Eocene, at which time there were in existence certain squirrel-like members of the order. Rodents are a persistent group, and are among the smallest, most distinctive, most numerous and widely distributed orders of terrestrial mammals. No other order boasts of so many species, the number being between nine hundred and one thousand. In spite of wide divergencies and modifications adapting them to various modes of life, such as climbing, burrowing, swimming, flying, leaping, and running, there is remarkable …

A Certain Multiple-Parameter Expansion, H. P. Doole Jan 1931

A Certain Multiple-Parameter Expansion, H. P. Doole

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

C. C. Camp has shown the convergence of the expansion of an arbitrary function in terms of the solutions of the systems of equations
X1’ (λa1 - Σi=2nμi)X1 = 0,
X1’ (λai + μi)Xi = 0, (j = 2, 3, …, n),
where the ai’s are functions of x, with the boundary conditions
Xi(-π) = Xi(π), (j = 1, 2, …, n).
In this paper it is intended to use a …

Parametric Solutions Of Certain Diophantine Equations, T. A. Pierce Jan 1931

Parametric Solutions Of Certain Diophantine Equations, T. A. Pierce

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In this note parametric solutions of certain diophantine equations are given. The method of obtaining the solutions is derived from an equation involving the determinants of certain matrices. It will be recognized that the method is a generalization of the method of Euler and Lagrange which depends on forms which repeat under multiplication. The matrices used in this paper must be such that their forms are retained under matric multiplication and addition. When integer values are assigned to the parameters of our solutions we obtain integer solutions of the particular equation under consideration; however not all integer solutions are necessarily …

On The Trigonometric Expansion Of Elliptic Functions, M. A. Basoco Jan 1931

On The Trigonometric Expansion Of Elliptic Functions, M. A. Basoco

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The problem of expressing an elliptic function in terms of infinite sums of trigonometric functions has been treated by Hermite, Briot and Bouquet, A. C. Dixon and others. In the present paper we treat the same problem from the point of view of Cauchy's residue theorem in function theory, which is also Briot and Bouquet's starting point, but we differ from these authors in that the integrand we use leads to an expansion for an elliptic function which is valid in an arbitrarily wide, but finite, strip of the complex plane, and which contains certain classical results as special cases. …

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Charles J. Glass Jun 1930

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Charles J. Glass

Bachelors’ Theses

As an introduction to the phenomenon of magnetic rotation it is well to offer a brief explanation of the phenomenon of optical activity. According to the ’’wave theory” of light the rays from any ordinary light vibrate in every conceivable plane. If the light is reflected from a glass surface or passed through a Nicol prism it undergoes a change. If an attempt is made to pass the beam through a second Nicol prism is found that the optical axes of the two prisms must be parallel to one another or the beam will not penetrate the second one.

A Study Of The Striated Spark By The Method Of Instantaneous Photography, Laurence L. Cruise May 1930

A Study Of The Striated Spark By The Method Of Instantaneous Photography, Laurence L. Cruise

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

In 1867 Toepler found the existence of a pulse spreading from the region around the spark immediately after it had passed. Since the density of the air in the pulse differs from that of the surrounding gas, the pulse is optically different from the rest of the field and so can be made visible by the “Shadowgraph Method.” Topeler’s work was the first of its kind where an instantaneous view, say of the order of several millionths of a second, of the electric spark was obtained. IN 1926 Dr. Zinszer, while studying the life history of the electric spark by …

A Study Of Gel Formation In Kerosene In Contact With Sodium, Jerome M. Weller May 1930

A Study Of Gel Formation In Kerosene In Contact With Sodium, Jerome M. Weller

Bachelors’ Theses

The origin of the problem to be considered in this paper is traced to the observations of John R. Koob, Ph.D., Head of the Chemistry Department of Marquette University. It was his experience to note that the kerosene, in a bottle, containing cut sodium for the organic laboratory, had solidified to a gel, resembling Vaseline in appearance.

The Study Of The Effects Of Different Metallic Soaps On The Water Content Of Water-In-Gasoline Emulsions, Lynn D. Wilson May 1930

The Study Of The Effects Of Different Metallic Soaps On The Water Content Of Water-In-Gasoline Emulsions, Lynn D. Wilson

Bachelors’ Theses

The study of emulsions and emulsification is of very great theoretical and practical interest. From the standpoint of pure science it throws much light on the problems of surface tension, surface concentration, absorption, surface films, electrical double layers. Brownian movement, and the general theory of disperse systems and colloids. It is also of importance in biological science, e.g., the adsorption of fats and the permeability of membranes. When industrial and applied science are considered, it is remarkable how many subjects of interest and importance are dependent on a knowledge of the formation, behavior, and stability of emulsions. In this connection, …

A Comparative Study Of The Chemical Composition Of Artificially Dried Hay To Obtain An Insight As To Its Nutritive Value, Charles F. Schalbe May 1930

A Comparative Study Of The Chemical Composition Of Artificially Dried Hay To Obtain An Insight As To Its Nutritive Value, Charles F. Schalbe

Bachelors’ Theses

This work has been undertaken as a ·result of tests recently carried out at the Greene Brothers' Brook Hill Farm at Genesee Depot, Wisconsin. It was found that cows, when fed artificially dried hay, produce milk in quantities greatly in excess of that accountable from known differences in the hay. Moreover, the milk seemed to have a different flavor - similar to pasture produced milk.

A Study Of Various Metallic Electrodes In Potentiometric Titrations, Louie Boncyk May 1930

A Study Of Various Metallic Electrodes In Potentiometric Titrations, Louie Boncyk

Bachelors’ Theses

The significance of ion concentrations has been the subject of many investigations during the last few years. The results obtained have demonstrated without question the unlimited possibilities existing for laboratory and industrial applications of ion concentration measurements. It has been shown in many instances biological activity, fermentation, and filtration are influenced to a large extent by variations in the H-ion concentration. In addition, the way is open for improved control and accuracy in the many neutralization problems encountered in the laboratory. The lack of suitable electrodes has greatly retarded the practical applications of H-ion measurements to plant industrial problems. The …

Casing head gasoline obtained from natural gas yields five commercial products. One of these is a mixture of amyl alcohols. As treated by the Sharples Company, West Virginia, pentane is separated and treated with chlorine. Three chlorine derivatives are produced. These are treated with caustic soda and may f'orm eight possible amyl· aloohols~1 The products of the normal pentane, only, are the subject matter of this thesis.

On Polynomial Solutions Of A Class Of Linear Differential Equations Of The Second Order, W. C. Brenke Jan 1930

On Polynomial Solutions Of A Class Of Linear Differential Equations Of The Second Order, W. C. Brenke

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Certain well known polynomials have a number of common properties. They arise as coefficients of tn in the expansion of a generating function ; they may be obtained by means of orthogonalization of a set of functions xⁿg(x) when the function ρ(x) = g2(x) and the interval are properly chosen ; they may be regarded as polynomials which become orthogonal when multiplied by a proper factor g(x) ; they satisfy a certain type of difference equation ; they satisfy a certain type of differential equation. The results …

Matrices Whose Characteristic Equations Are Cyclic, T. A. Pierce Jan 1930

Matrices Whose Characteristic Equations Are Cyclic, T. A. Pierce

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

One of Sylvester's theorems f on matrices states that if the characteristic equation
(1) | M - λI| = f(λ) = 0
of a square matrix M has the roots λ1, λ2, … , λn, then the characteristic equation
(2) | φM - ρI| = = g(ρ) = 0
of any integral function of M, namely, φM, has the roots ρi = φ (λi), i = 1, 2, … , n. In this note an isomorphism is shown to exist between …

Iron And Cobalt Salts As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Sodium Sulfite By Free Oxygen, Loren C. Bryner Jan 1930

Iron And Cobalt Salts As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Sodium Sulfite By Free Oxygen, Loren C. Bryner

Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation was carried out to show the catalytic effect of some iron and cobalt salts on the oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions by free oxygen. The rate of reaction was determined by measuring the volume of water required to replace the absorbed oxygen. A photograph and diagrammatical arrangement of the apparatus is given, (Page 14). From the preliminary experiments it was found that the rate of oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions is dependent upon concentration, and speed of the shaker.

A Measurement Of The Extent Of The Color-Sensitive Areas Of The Retina And Of The Wavelengths Of Light Stimulating The Respective Receptor Mechanisms, Charles A. Rinde Jan 1930

A Measurement Of The Extent Of The Color-Sensitive Areas Of The Retina And Of The Wavelengths Of Light Stimulating The Respective Receptor Mechanisms, Charles A. Rinde

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The interest of the writer was directed toward the phenomena of color vision in 1927 as a result of attending concurrently two courses in the University of California touching upon the subject, but treating it quite differently with results far from mutually consistent. Prof. R. S. Minor, in his course on physical optics, discussed color vision from the physicist’s standpoint, making use of the Young-Helmholtz theory; while Prof. G. M. Stratton gave the psychological treatment, based upon the Ladd-Franklin theory, as a part of his general psychology. Several of the more obviously points of conflict impressed the writer so strongly …

Studies In The Magnetic Rotation Of The Plane Of Polarized Light, Richard J. Stollenwerk, Clifford R. Haymaker

Bachelors’ Theses

Before entering upon a discussion of the historical development of the subject of magnetic rotation, it may be well to explain briefly the nature of the phenomenon under investigation. According to the wave theory of light, the rays from any ordinary light source vibrate in every conceivable plane. If now the light is reflected from a glass surface or passed through a Nicol prism, it undergoes a change. If an attempt is made to pass the beam through a second Nicol prism, it is found that the optical axes of the two prisms must be parallel to one another or …
