Geology Of The Ragged Point Oil Field Musselshell County, Montana, David M. Amos Jun 1954

Geology Of The Ragged Point Oil Field Musselshell County, Montana, David M. Amos

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The Ragged Point oil field is located in Northwest Musselshell County, in the Lake Basin field of central Montana, and on the western border of the Great Plains region. The surface topography is that of a plain marked by erosion and moderate folding. The stratigraphy of central Montana shows periodic marine invasions from the Cordilleran trough, with normal marine limestones interbedded with sandstone sand shales. These sediments are over 12,000 feet thick, with the Cretaceous Eagle and Colorado formations exposed at the surface on the Ragged Point anticline. Undifferentiated Cambrian limestones and shales are the oldest rocks encountered in drilling.

On A Theorem Of Gelfand And Kolmogoroff Concerning Maximal Ideals In Rings Of Continuous Functions, Leonard Gillman, Melvin Henriksen, Meyer Jerison Jun 1954

On A Theorem Of Gelfand And Kolmogoroff Concerning Maximal Ideals In Rings Of Continuous Functions, Leonard Gillman, Melvin Henriksen, Meyer Jerison

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper deals with a theorem of Gelfand and Kolmogoroff concerning the ring C= C(X, R) of all continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular topological space X, and the subring C* = C*(X, R) consisting of all bounded functions in C. The theorem in question yields a one-one correspondence between the maximal ideals of C and those of C*; it is stated without proof in [2]. Here we supply a proof (§2), and we apply the theorem to three problems previously considered by Hewitt in [5].

Our first result (§3) consists of two simple constructions of the Q-space vX. …

The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale Jan 1954

The Velocity Of Ultrasonics In Liquids, Mack A. Breazeale

Masters Theses

"In acoustics the term ultrasonics is used to refer to those frequencies which are above the range of human hearing; that is, frequencies above approximately 20,000 cycles per second. Since the laws of sound which are valid for the audible range are also valid in the ultrasonic range and since the wave length of ultrasonics is much shorter than that of audible sound, ultrasonic has proved very valuable in the calculation of both the velocity and the absorption coefficient of sound in various media. This is especially notable in the case of liquids, where the velocity of sound is much …

Geology Of The South Half Of The Meramec Spring Quadrangle, Missouri, Howard Joseph Yorston Jan 1954

Geology Of The South Half Of The Meramec Spring Quadrangle, Missouri, Howard Joseph Yorston

Masters Theses

"This report is a continuation of the work initiated by Mueller in his mapping of the north half of the Meramec Spring Quadrangle. The completion of this work provides not only a geologic map of the whole quadrangle but also completes the mapping of the geology of a strip of quadrangles extending from Rolla to the Mississippi River. In addition to being a step closer to the goal of complete geologic coverage for the state, this work will be of value to those concerned with the prediction of depths of wells drilled in search for water, which in view of …

Early History Of Millard County And Its Latter-Day Saint Settlers, 1851-1912, Ladd R. Cropper

Theses and Dissertations

Millard County, Utah is located one hundred and fifty miles south of Salt Lake City in the west central part of the state. The county is bounded on the north by Juab County, on the west by Nevada, on the south by Beaver County, and on the east by Sevie, Sanpete, and Juab Counties.

There are interesting formations of extinct volcanoes. Fossils can be found and well marked evidences of an ancient lake named Bonneville.

A short account of the early explorer, Father Escalante, is given in the thesis. This tells of his travels in Millard County in the year …

Determination Of The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Harold Robert Weisbrod Jan 1954

Determination Of The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Harold Robert Weisbrod

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research is to investigate possible methods of determining the thermal conductivity of small poorly conducting samples at elevated temperatures, and, further, to assemble a suitable apparatus, followed by measurement of thermal conductivity of one or more cubic lattice samples.

Basic requirements of the apparatus are few. It is first required that the measurement of thermal conductivity be made over a considerable range temperature. It is also preferred that the basic apparatus be placed in a vacuum where undesirable heat flow by convection is eliminated and air corrodible samples are preserved.

The apparatus must use only the …

Studies In Quantitative Paleontology. Iii. An Application Of Sequential Analysis To The Comparison Of Growth Stages And Growth Series, Benjamin H. Burma

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Detailed directions for carrying out a comparison of characters of fossils by a sequential analysis are given. The method is adapted to comparison at a single growth stage and to the comparison of growth series. The method has the advantage of, in general, requiring fewer specimens than the classical methods of comparison.

On The Continuity Of The Real Roots Of An Algebraic Equation, Melvin Henriksen, John R. Isbell Jun 1953

On The Continuity Of The Real Roots Of An Algebraic Equation, Melvin Henriksen, John R. Isbell

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

It is well known that the root of an algebraic equation is a continuous multiple-valued function of its coefficients [5, p. 3]. However, it is not necessarily true that a root can be given by a continuous single-valued function. A complete solution of this problem has long been known in the case where the coefficients are themselves polynomials in a complex variable [3, chap. V]. For most purposes the concept of the Riemann surface enables one to bypass the problem. However, in the study of the ideal structure of rings of continuous functions, the general problem must be met directly. …

The Construction And Operation Of A Universal Specimen Mount With Protective Lead Shield For The Purpose Of Determining Pole Figures Using The Schulz-Decker Transmission Technique, Richard L. Fausner Jun 1953

The Construction And Operation Of A Universal Specimen Mount With Protective Lead Shield For The Purpose Of Determining Pole Figures Using The Schulz-Decker Transmission Technique, Richard L. Fausner

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

It was the purpose of this study to construct a universal mount, to construct a protective lead shield, to operate the instrument, and to provide a pole figure using the transmission method of Schulz and Decker. There are at present several lengthy x-ray methods of determining the grain orientation of metals. These methods are mainly photographic. In order to provide a rapid means of obtaining the necessary information concerning the grain orientation of a metal, a universal mount was constructed.

Production and reserve figures are listed by tables in cases where such information is available.

Geology Of The Marget Ann Mine Butte District, Montana, Winston Martin Sahinen May 1953

Geology Of The Marget Ann Mine Butte District, Montana, Winston Martin Sahinen

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

As the field work progressed it became apparent that very little was known of the mineralogical associations of the precious metal constituents of the Marget Ann ore. A mineralogical study in excess of that originally planned was then decided upon to determine the affiliations exhibited by the silver and gold. With these objectives in mind, the laboratory and field work continued.

The Indium-Mercury Constitutional Diagram, Bert E. Lake May 1953

The Indium-Mercury Constitutional Diagram, Bert E. Lake

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Whenever metals differ greatly in electropositivity, intermetallic compounds are likely to form in preference to solid solutions. 21ercury and indium show a considerable difference in electropositivity. This would indicate that intermetallic compounds may play an important role in the constitutional diagram for the mercury-indium system.

Heavy Rains Show Need For Soil Conservation Practices, G H. Burvill May 1953

Heavy Rains Show Need For Soil Conservation Practices, G H. Burvill

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Autumn 1953 will stand out in the weather records for the widespread heavy rains in the pastoral areas and wheatbelt. The rains which came from the cyclonic storms of March 22-25, totalled five to 12 inches in many pastoral areas and two to seven inches in the Northern and Eastern Wheatbelt. The steady rain soaked the land, but where the falls were heaviest, runoff to lower parts caused flooding and local inconvenience. All in all, it was a very welcome rain, especially where the previous winter had been dry. In the wheatbelt, ploughing and cultivation were soon in full swing …
