Thermally Induced Color Changes In Iron Oxide Pigments Used In Architectural Coatings, Han Diep Jun 2026

Thermally Induced Color Changes In Iron Oxide Pigments Used In Architectural Coatings, Han Diep

Master's Theses

The 2025 Palisades Fire was one of the most destructive wildfires in the history of Los Angeles, destroying thousands of structures and severely impacting the communities after. This widespread destruction demonstrated an urgent need for more effective wildfire prevention strategies. Architectural coatings do not only provide aesthetics and protection against environmental conditions but can also function as a thermal indicator when a fire breaks out. This study examines the thermally induced color transformation of iron oxide pigments, commonly used in earthtone paint, to provide information relevant to CAL FIRE for improved analysis of wildland-urban interface (WUI) fire behavior and mitigation …

Sea-Ice Observation In The Arctic By The Arab Satellite 813, Simulated By The Radiative Transfer Model ‘Sciatran’, Tuqa Mohsin Al Hajri Jun 2026

Sea-Ice Observation In The Arctic By The Arab Satellite 813, Simulated By The Radiative Transfer Model ‘Sciatran’, Tuqa Mohsin Al Hajri

Theses

The purpose of this research is to explore the spectral behavior of sea ice and to understand how Arctic sea ice surfaces appear when they are observed with a hyperspectral sensor. This is crucial because sea ice changes a lot during the melt season, and different surface types can sometimes look similar to a human eye, but physically they are different. It is thus essential to identify the spectral differences between these surfaces. The main objective of this study is to examine how the spectra of white ice and melt ponds change when their physical and optical properties are varied, …

Analytical And Numerical Methods For Solving Fractional Integro-Differential Equations Using The Modified Operational Matrix Method, Nour Alzoubi Jun 2026

Analytical And Numerical Methods For Solving Fractional Integro-Differential Equations Using The Modified Operational Matrix Method, Nour Alzoubi

Theses

Fractional calculus has attracted considerable attention in recent years because of its wide applicability to model a variety of linear and nonlinear physical phenomena across different scientific disciplines. In particular, fractional diferential equation systems have proven to be effective in describing processes with memory and hereditary properties. However, the solvability and analysis of such systems strongly depend on the type of fractional operator employed, especially in the presence of nonlocal fractional derivatives with singular kernels, which remain an open and challenging area of research.

The main objective of this thesis is to develop efficient analytical and numerical techniques for solving …

Heat Transfer And Micropolar Characteristic Analysis For Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder: A Fractional Derivative Study, Khalid Al Homran Jun 2026

Heat Transfer And Micropolar Characteristic Analysis For Fluid Flow Over A Contracting Permeable Infinite-Length Cylinder: A Fractional Derivative Study, Khalid Al Homran

Theses

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of heat transfer and micropolar fluid characteristics for flow over a contracting permeable infinite-length cylinder using fractional derivative modeling. The micropolar fluid model accounts for microstructure effects that are prevalent in many practical applications, such as polymeric fluids, colloidal suspensions, and biological fluids. The inclusion of fractional derivatives allows the analysis to incorporate memory effects, which provide a more accurate depiction of the physical phenomena compared to classical integer-order models. The governing partial differential equations, representing the momentum, micropolar momentum and energy transport processes, are transformed into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations …

Malicious Quic Traffic Detection Using Malicious Quic Traffic Detection Using Malicious Quic Traffic Detection Using Malicious Quic Traffic Detection Using, Choudhary Muhammad Zia

Theses

The enhanced QUIC protocol's encryption capabilities not only encrypt the traffic payload but also encrypt the packet headers that network security tools rely on for packet inspection. This enhanced encryption capability introduces challenges for network operators in monitoring and analyzing network traffic by creating blind spots in firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and deep packet inspection devices. Earlier research has demonstrated that training machine learning classifiers on individual QUIC packets across different classifiers has failed to detect any malicious traffic due to encrypted packet headers.

This thesis demonstrates that shifting to network flow analysis resolves this problem. Rather than analyzing individual …

Happycal: Designing Text And Image-Based Supports For Savouring Positive Work Experiences, Molly Stewart, Minghao Cai, Anthony Tang, Sam Liu, Chris Mosunic, Sowmya Somanath

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Savouring positive work experiences can promote positive affect and well-being at work, yet there is limited guidance on how digital applications can support workers to engage in savouring. We developed HappyCal, a work-focused savouring application offering two forms of savouring support: text-based, a common modality in workplace reflection tools, and images, a largely unexplored approach in work-related savouring. We conducted an exploratory qualitative study where participants (N=36) used HappyCal over five days and engaged in savouring through either a text-only modality (n=17) or text input paired with image output (n=19). We found that (1) participants in both groups reported heightened …

Towards Efficient Continual Learning: From Memory Optimization To Foundation Models, Zilin Luo

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Continual learning, also termed lifelong learning, enables machine learning models to incrementally acquire new knowledge while mitigating the degradation of previously learned information—a capability essential for adapting to dynamic, real-world data environments. This dissertation investigates the core challenges of continual learning and extends its application to enhancing training efficiency in the era of foundation models. The first part of this dissertation addresses the constraints of few-shot exemplar storage with a novel compression framework. While leveraging class activation maps to downsample non-discriminative pixels, we introduce an adaptive masking model, optimized through bilevel optimization, to store more exemplars efficiently. The second part …

Towards Auto-Evaluation For Large Language Models, Jiahao Ying Jun 2026

Towards Auto-Evaluation For Large Language Models, Jiahao Ying

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The rapid advancement of large language models (LLMs) has created an urgent need for evaluation methodologies that are timely, scalable, reliable, and informative. Conventional evaluation benchmarks, although essential for measuring model capabilities and guiding model development, are often constructed and maintained through labor-intensive human annotation. As LLMs continue to improve through increases in model scale, training data, and computational resources, static benchmarks may quickly lose discriminative power. Moreover, the growing use of large and diverse training corpora increases the risk of benchmark leakage, which can inflate evaluation results and obscure the true capabilities of models. These challenges call for a …

Phases And Dynamics Of An Impurity Immersed In One-Dimensional Quantum Droplets, Dimitrios Diplaris, Ilias A. Englezos, Friethjof Theel, Peter Schmelcher, Simeon I. Mistakidis Jun 2026

Phases And Dynamics Of An Impurity Immersed In One-Dimensional Quantum Droplets, Dimitrios Diplaris, Ilias A. Englezos, Friethjof Theel, Peter Schmelcher, Simeon I. Mistakidis

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We explore the ground-state properties of a single impurity immersed in a one-dimensional quantum droplet medium formed by a two-component Bose mixture. Relying on ab initio simulations, we demonstrate that tuning the impurity–droplet interactions allows to controllably reshape the droplets' density profiles and associated correlation patterns. For attractive impurity-medium couplings, the impurity becomes localized within the droplet, which exhibits a density hump at the vicinity of the impurity, while repulsive interactions facilitate phase separation. Comparing our many-body results with the appropriate extended Gross–Pitaevskii description, we find adequate agreement for the droplet density profiles, with the effective field approach systematically overestimating …

Hide-And-Sweep: Detecting Concealed Cameras Via Led Illumination Sweeps, Jonghyuk Yun, Jaeyoung Moon, Yunseo Park, Sean Rui Xiang Tan, Byunghyun Kim, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Jun Han

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hidden cameras have increasingly infiltrated hotel and Airbnb rooms, posing serious privacy risks. Detecting such cameras is challenging because they are visually inconspicuous and often embedded inside everyday objects. Even worse, existing handheld detectors are manual and also rely on single-angle illumination and hence suffer from high false-positive rates. We present SweepLED (pronounced "sweepled")1, a practical hidden camera detection system that operates on a commodity smartphone augmented with an unobtrusive LED-embedded case. SweepLED performs LED sweeping - a controlled sequence of multi-angle illumination - while the user simply holds the phone still by hand, enabling the camera to capture how …

District Cooling Systems (DCS) in the Middle East, while energy-efficient, are significant contributors to carbon emissions. This study introduces a novel framework to decarbonize DCS operations by integrating predictive machine learning, explainable AI (XAI), and renewable energy planning, all grounded in extensive real-world data. Leveraging a unique dataset from 59 residential buildings in the UAE—including energy consumption, climate variables, and building features—we developed a high-fidelity cooling load forecasting model. Following a rigorous chronological validation methodology, the Random Forest model was identified as the most robust, achieving a strong performance (R2 = 0.8256, RMSE = 11,668.31). Outdoor temperature was confirmed …

Patchfuzz: Patch Fuzzing For Javascript Engines, Junjie Wang, Zhihua Xie, Xiaofei Xie, Xiaoning Du, Xiangwei Zhang Jun 2026

Patchfuzz: Patch Fuzzing For Javascript Engines, Junjie Wang, Zhihua Xie, Xiaofei Xie, Xiaoning Du, Xiangwei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Context: Patch fuzzing is a technique aimed at identifying vulnerabilities that arise from newly patched code. While researchers have made efforts to apply patch fuzzing to testing JavaScript (JS) engines with considerable success, these efforts have been limited to using ordinary test cases or publicly available vulnerability PoCs (Proof of Concepts) as seeds, and the sustainability of these approaches is hindered by the challenges associated with automating the PoC collection. Objective: To address these limitations, we propose an end-to-end sustainable approach for JS engine patch fuzzing, named PatchFuzz. Method: It automates the collection of PoCs of a broader range of …

To Wait Or To Transfer? A Three-Level Optimization Framework For Intermodal Transfer Coordination In First Train Timetabling And Bus Bridging Services Management, Hao Li, Liujiang Kang, Norman Weik, Huijun Sun, Qingying Lai, Zhiguang Cao Jun 2026

To Wait Or To Transfer? A Three-Level Optimization Framework For Intermodal Transfer Coordination In First Train Timetabling And Bus Bridging Services Management, Hao Li, Liujiang Kang, Norman Weik, Huijun Sun, Qingying Lai, Zhiguang Cao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study addresses the integrated optimization of the first train timetabling and bus bridging service design (FTT-BBSD) for morning transfer challenges, two critical but interdependent passenger services in the public transit system. In contrast to most existing studies and conventional approaches, this study explicitly models the influence of passenger path choices and transfer mode selections on FTT-BBSD. Through a novel dual-level network representation that integrates subway and bus systems, we formulate the FTT-BBSD problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. The model simultaneously determines subway and bus timetables and bridging line deployment to minimize total travel time for all first …

A Pruning-Based Question-Answering For Interactive Video Search: A Simple Baseline, Yu Tong Cheng, Phuong Anh Nguyen, Chong-Wah Ngo Jun 2026

A Pruning-Based Question-Answering For Interactive Video Search: A Simple Baseline, Yu Tong Cheng, Phuong Anh Nguyen, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There are various factors affecting the performance of video search. An imprecise query will enlarge search space and reduce the discriminative power of ranking functions. This problem is further exacerbated by the presence of numerous visually or semantically similar videos in large datasets. Consequently, users need to painstakingly browse through many highly similar candidates to locate the search target, leading to increased cognitive load and inefficient searching. Ideally, engaging users through interactive questioning to resolve uncertainties in the search process is an effective strategy for progressively narrowing down the search space. However, despite rapid advances in deep learning, generating informative …

Rode: Linear Rectified Mixture Of Diverse Experts For Food Large Multi-Modal Models, Pengkun Jiao, Xinlan Wu, Bin Zhu, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Gang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs) have significantly advanced a variety of vision-language tasks. The scalability and availability of high-quality training data play a pivotal role in the success of LMMs. In the realm of food, while comprehensive food datasets such as Recipe1M offer an abundance of ingredient and recipe information, they often fall short of providing ample data for nutritional analysis. The Recipe1M+ dataset, despite offering a subset for nutritional evaluation, is limited in the scale and accuracy of nutrition information. To bridge this gap, we introduce Uni-Food, a unified food dataset that comprises over 100,000 images with various food labels, …

Frozen Lvlms For Micro-Video Recommendation: A Systematic Study Of Feature Extraction And Fusion, Huatuan Sun, Yunshan Ma, Changguang Wu, Yanxin Zhang, Pengfei Wang, Xiaoyu Du

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Frozen Large Video Language Models (LVLMs) are increasingly employed in micro-video recommendation (MVR) due to their strong multimodal understanding. However, existing apporches typically deploy LVLMs as fixed black-box feature extractors without systematically comparing alternative representation strategies. To address this gap, we present the first systematic empirical study on various feature extraction paradigms and integration strategies, along with hierarchical representations from frozen LVLMs for MVR. Extensive experiments on representative LVLMs reveal that hidden states from multiple decoder layers provide richer and more effective representations for MVR. Guided by this insight, we propose the Dual Feature Fusion (DFF) Framework, a lightweight approach …

Group Conversational Agents: A Review Of Designs That Support And Shape Group Interaction, Shunyi Yeo, Tianyi Zhang, Scott Bateman, Gary Hsieh, Young-Ho Kim, Simon Tangi Perrault, Jiannan Li, Anthony Tang Jun 2026

Group Conversational Agents: A Review Of Designs That Support And Shape Group Interaction, Shunyi Yeo, Tianyi Zhang, Scott Bateman, Gary Hsieh, Young-Ho Kim, Simon Tangi Perrault, Jiannan Li, Anthony Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversational agents that participate in or mediate group interaction introduce challenges that extend beyond supporting individual users, raising new questions about how agents participate in and influence groups. To characterise this emerging design space, we present a systematic review of 53 peer-reviewed studies on group conversational agents (GCAs). We analyse how GCAs intervene in group-level processes, including participation regulation, conflict mediation, task alignment, and execution support. Using concepts from group research as an analytic lens, we organise prior GCA work around recurring group interactional challenges (orientation, conflict, alignment, and execution), and examine the roles agents are designed to play in …

Language Embeddings Meet Shallow Autoencoders, Rodrigo Alves, Vojtěch Vančura, Pavel Kordík, Antoine Ledent Jun 2026

Language Embeddings Meet Shallow Autoencoders, Rodrigo Alves, Vojtěch Vančura, Pavel Kordík, Antoine Ledent

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Shallow autoencoders are appealing recommenders due to their simplicity, scalability, and competitive retrieval quality, but they struggle in strict cold-start settings where new items have no interactions. We propose an inductive shallow autoencoder that leverages item side information (language embeddings) by fixing the decoder to item features and learning only an encoder in the same semantic space. To prevent trivial self-reconstruction without enforcing a hard zero diagonal, we introduce diagonal gating: a leave-one-item-out objective that blocks the self-copy shortcut only for the item being updated while retaining context from the rest of the user history. An alternating-style optimization trains the …

History To Future: Evolving Agent With Experience And Thought For Zero-Shot Vision-And-Language Navigation, Guangzhao Dai, Shuo Wang, Zihan Wang, Guo-Sen Xie, Yang Yang, Jinshan Pan, Qianru Sun, Xiangbo Shu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vision-and-Language Navigation in Continuous Environment (VLN-CE) requires an agent to follow language instructions to navigate the target destination. With the advancement of large language models (LLMs), recent efforts have explored adapting them for zero-shot VLN-CE, offering a promising solution in addressing the drawbacks of poor generalization in the training-based paradigm. However, existing LLM-based works primarily perform naive reasoning for decision-making and lack feedback, e.g., reviewing historical errors and predicting future potentials. Consequently, it may suffer from continuous failure for those initial error tasks. In this paper, we rethink LLM-based zero-shot VLN-CE and propose a new paradigm, named EvoNav, to improve …

“Alexa, Do Not Say That In Front Of My Boss!” A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of User And Ai Preferences For Privacy-Aware Smart Speaker Interactions Across Contexts, Lynne Warin, Emily Aurelia, Anthony Tang, Emily Aurelia, Delphine Reinhardt Jun 2026

“Alexa, Do Not Say That In Front Of My Boss!” A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of User And Ai Preferences For Privacy-Aware Smart Speaker Interactions Across Contexts, Lynne Warin, Emily Aurelia, Anthony Tang, Emily Aurelia, Delphine Reinhardt

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to their limited ability to reason about the social context in which they are used, smart speakers pose significant privacy risks by responding in ways that may violate people's implicit social boundaries. We conducted a cross-cultural vignette study (N = 944) in Germany and Singapore to investigate how situational factors—specifically social context (bystander relationships and closeness), physical context (location), and interaction context (topic and deceptive intent)—regulate user preferences for smart speaker responses. Our results demonstrate that these factors are superior predictors of response preferences than dispositional user traits (i.e., intrinsic personal traits). We identify two distinct social dynamics: a …

How Do Machine Learning Models Change?, Joel Castaño, Rafael Cabañas, Antonio Salmerón, David Lo, Silverio Martínez-Fernández

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The proliferation of Machine Learning (ML) models and their open source implementations has transformed AI research and applications. Platforms like Hugging Face (HF) enable this evolving ecosystem, yet a large-scale longitudinal study of how these models change is lacking. This study addresses this gap by analyzing over 680,000 commits from 100,000 models and 2,251 releases from 202 of these models on HF using repository mining and longitudinal methods. We apply an extended ML change taxonomy to classify commits and use Bayesian networks to model temporal patterns in commit and release activities. Our findings show that commit activities align with established …

Update: Colorado River Basin Storage Continues Slide Toward System Crash, Anne Castle, Jack Schmidt, Eric Kuhn, Kathryn Sorensen, Katherine Tara Jun 2026

Update: Colorado River Basin Storage Continues Slide Toward System Crash, Anne Castle, Jack Schmidt, Eric Kuhn, Kathryn Sorensen, Katherine Tara

The Traveling Wilburys of the Colorado River

If the Colorado River Basin (Basin) experiences another dry year, similar to Water Year 2025, it is likely that reasonably accessible storage in Lake Powell and Lake Mead would be mostly depleted, even if consumptive uses and losses are at or near historic lows. Run-of-the-river operations would shortly ensue. This would be an outcome with devastating consequences. In contrast, if next year is very wet, similar to Water Year 2023, the Basin’s largest federal reservoirs would recover somewhat, but would provide only about two years of cushion before we find ourselves again in the same position we are in today, …

Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli Jun 2026

Fractional Bernstein Polynomial Approximations For Nonlinear Timefractional Partial Differential Equations, Reem Abdul Quzli

Theses

This thesis studies the numerical approximation of nonlinear time-fractional partial differential equations using fractional Bernstein polynomials. The main model considered is the nonlinear time-fractional foam drainage equation, in which the classical time derivative is replaced by the Caputo fractional derivative. This formulation introduces memory effects into the model and allows the present drainage behavior to depend on the previous evolution of the liquid fraction.

The proposed method approximates the solution by a finite expansion of fractional Bernstein basis functions. After substituting this approximation into the governing equation, the residual is expanded in powers of t . The unknown coefficient …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Short peptides can form adaptive supramolecular assemblies, and understanding how minimal sequences organize around neurometabolites or hydrophobic cancer drugs enables the rational design of functional materials. This thesis combines molecular dynamics with experimental validation to establish design rules linking peptide sequence to emergent structure and function. Chapter 1 outlines the molecular determinants governing peptide assembly. Chapter 2 reviews computational workflows that reveal sequence-dependent conformations and supramolecular organization. Chapter 3 applies these principles to Dynamic Peptide Libraries which identify tetrapeptides that selectively interact with neurometabolites. Chapter 4 extends the same interaction-driven framework to design tryptophan-rich pentapeptides that co-assemble with kinase inhibitors …
