Mineral Composition In Relation To Particle Size For A Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, John Edward May Jan 1951

Mineral Composition In Relation To Particle Size For A Missouri Plastic Fire Clay, John Edward May

Masters Theses

"From the rather modest beginning of the refractory industry in Missouri prior to the Civil War, the industry has grown to challenge those of other states as the third largest producer of refractory clays and products in the United States. As Roberts (1950) points out, the development of the metallurgical and glass industries increased the demand for high grade refractory materials. A prominent factor in the development of the fire clays of Missouri was the discovery that flint clay could be mixed with the plastic or semi-plastic refractory clays to yield an excellent product. Perhaps the most important reason many …

A Stratigraphic Study Of Fusulinid Foraminifera In The Cherokee Group (Pennsylvanian) Of Western Missouri And Kansas, Ralph Orlansky Jan 1951

A Stratigraphic Study Of Fusulinid Foraminifera In The Cherokee Group (Pennsylvanian) Of Western Missouri And Kansas, Ralph Orlansky

Masters Theses

"Limestones or shaly limestones, from four stratigraphic levels in the Cherokee group (Desmoinesian series) of Missouri and Kansas, contain eight species and two varieties of fusulinid foraminifera, of which four species and two varieties are new, and one ophthalmidiid foraminiferal species (Hemigordius cf. regularis Plummer). The next to highest limestone (cap rock of the Fleming coal) is correlated with the Seahorne limestone of western Illinois, the Stonefort limestone of southern Illinois, and the Munterville limestone of Iowa. Hemigordius regularis, a limestone facies foraminifer apparently marks a correlatable interval in the Ardmore limestone. Descriptions of the fusulinids and the …

A Light Source To Be Used With A Vacuum Spectrograph, Roy George Woodle Jr. Jan 1951

A Light Source To Be Used With A Vacuum Spectrograph, Roy George Woodle Jr.

Masters Theses

"A grazing incidence vacuum grating spectrograph for use in the vacuum ultraviolet was designed and partially constructed by Mr. L. H. Chapin, as a research project for a Master’s Degree. This instrument is designed to photograph the region of the spectrum from 100 Å to 1000 Å. As Boyce pointed out in his exhaustive review, there is much important observational work to be done in this region.

The author of this paper has undertaken to develop a satisfactory source for the region from 100 Å to 1000 Å. This is part of a project to photograph the emission and absorption …

An Application Of The Atomic Distribution Function Of Liquid Mercury, Robert Lee Choate Jan 1951

An Application Of The Atomic Distribution Function Of Liquid Mercury, Robert Lee Choate

Masters Theses

"The study of liquids and the knowledge of an adequate description of liquid structure have not advanced as rapidly as it has in the case of solids and gases. In a perfect crystal, the atoms or molecules are held in equilibrium positions by strong intermolecular forces. There are vibrations about these positions, but the translational energy is negligible. The molecules of an ideal gas move independently of each other and the intermolecular potential energy may be neglected. For each of these cases it is possible to derive a partition function from which the properties of the state can be readily …

Radioactive Carbon Labeled Molecules: A Method Of Synthesis, Glen E. Benedict Jan 1951

Radioactive Carbon Labeled Molecules: A Method Of Synthesis, Glen E. Benedict

Masters Theses

"Use of isotopic carbon in determining organic reaction mechanisms is becoming more popular daily. The reasons for this trend are, the increasing availability of intermediate compounds, the increase in isotope handling knowledge, and mechanisms defined by well ordered tracer reactions are considered infallible.

The mechanism of reaction of halo-epoxides has been a point of conjecture for some time"--Introduction, page 1.

A Correlation Function For Liquid Argon, Walter Graham Jan 1951

A Correlation Function For Liquid Argon, Walter Graham

Masters Theses

"X-ray scattering patterns have given considerable information concerning atomic distributions in matter, both crystalline and amorphous. Work on the diffraction of x-rays by crystals was begun in 1912 by Friedrich, Knipping, and Laue, and much valuable information concerning the arrangement of atoms in crystals has been supplied by this method. Diffraction of x-rays by gases was studied as early as 1911, and work in this field has given information concerning the arrangement of atoms in molecules and electron distribution in atoms. Work on the diffraction of x-rays by liquids was begun by Friedrich who obtained diffraction patterns of Canada Balsam, …

Radiolaria From The Porters Creek Formation (Paleocene, Midway Group) Of Stoddard County, Missouri, Eldridge Sellers Middour Jan 1951

Radiolaria From The Porters Creek Formation (Paleocene, Midway Group) Of Stoddard County, Missouri, Eldridge Sellers Middour

Masters Theses

"Fossil Radiolaria are described and figured from the Porters Creek formation (Paleocene) of Ardeola, Stoddard County Missouri. This is the first detailed treatment of fossil radiolarians from the Gulf Coast area. Thirty-one species are described and figured, all believed to be new, belonging to twenty-four genera. Fifteen families are represented, ten referable to the Legion Spumellaria, five to the Legion Nassellaria. Stratigraphic descriptions or the section at Ardeola is presented, and a discussion of laboratory techniques is included"--Abstract, page 3.

The Polarographic Determination Of Germanium, Herbert L. Bowkley Jan 1951

The Polarographic Determination Of Germanium, Herbert L. Bowkley

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation was to study the polarographic behavior of germanium in various aqueous solutions. In addition to the simple polarographic behavior of germanium some attention was given to the applications or polarography for the development of an anlytical [sic] procedure for its quantitative determination in zinc ore concentrates and spelter fume materials"--Introduction, page 1.

Geology Of The North Half Of The Meramec Spring Quadrangle, Missouri, Harold Edward Mueller Jan 1951

Geology Of The North Half Of The Meramec Spring Quadrangle, Missouri, Harold Edward Mueller

Masters Theses

"The Ozark region is visited by many persons each year, and one of its popular tourist attractions is Meramec Spring. In recent years, with the advent of better roads and swifter means of transportation, visitors are coming to this beautiful spring in increasing numbers. For those who are geologists, this work will serve as a handy guide; for those who are laymen, this work may give a better understanding of the geologic events which have made this part of the Ozarks a place of scenic beauty. Mapping of the Meramec Spring Quadrangle will complete a program of geologic mapping of …

Geology And Mineralization Of The Jefferson Mine, Hardin County, Illinois, Robert Joe Cronk

Masters Theses

"Purpose of the Investigation: The geology of the Jefferson Mine was mapped to determine the relationship of the two fluorspar veins exposed on the 260-foot level to the single vein on the 200-foot level to study the mineralogy and paragenesis of the ore, and to gain any other information that would lead to a better understanding of the fluorspar deposits"--Introduction, page 1.

Torsional Modulus Of Rupture Of Thick-Walled Magnesium Alloy Fs-1 Tubing, Delbert R. Cox Jan 1951

Torsional Modulus Of Rupture Of Thick-Walled Magnesium Alloy Fs-1 Tubing, Delbert R. Cox

Masters Theses

"Magnesium is taking a more prominent position in the structure of aircraft, and because of this, it is important that the mechanical properties of the material be understood more fully. In the high speeds of today, the tendency is toward the use of thick-walled tubing instead of the thin-walled tubing with stiffening structures. For this reason, it is of interest to note the characteristics of thick-walled tubing when subjected to torsion.

This thesis was first suggested by a circular letter on proposed thesis titles from the Commanding General, Air Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. When interest was …

Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan Jan 1951

Square Wave Modulation, Richard Henry Duncan

Masters Theses

"Modulation of a radio frequency carrier can be defined as the variation of some wave parameter such as amplitude, frequency, or phase, in accordance with intelligence to be transmitted. An unmodulated carrier is simply a continuous sine wave and contains no information other than the fact that the transmitter has been turned on. The spectrum of an unmodulated signal consists of a single frequency. Any type of modulation is characterized by the appearance of additional frequencies, known as sidebands. One of the fundamental problems in radio engineering is to reduce the number of sidebands to a minimum and still adequately …

Application Of X-Ray Technique To The Detection Of Internal Insect Infestation Of Grain, Max Milner, Milford R. Lee, Robert Katz Dec 1950

Application Of X-Ray Technique To The Detection Of Internal Insect Infestation Of Grain, Max Milner, Milford R. Lee, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

During the course of a comprehensive investigation of methods for the determination of internal insect infestation in commercial wheat, radiographic techniques have been developed at this station which provide satisfactory delineation of internal infestation. We have applied these techniques to the observation of the growth of such insects as granary weevil, Sitophilus granaries L., and rice weevil, Sitophilus oryza L., from the hatching of the egg within the kernel through larval and pupal growth to emergence as a mature insect. Although considerable detail is always lost in the reproduction of radiographs during engraving and printing, the accompanying figures (1, …

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary. All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University. Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …
