Physics, Chapter 6: Circular Motion And Gravitation, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Physics, Chapter 6: Circular Motion And Gravitation, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Our earlier discussion of the kinematics of a particle was developed principally from the point of view of being able to describe that motion easily within a rectangular coordinate system. Thus the most complex case with which we dealt was that of a projectile motion, in which the acceleration was constant and was directed along one of the coordinate axes. A more convenient framework within which to discuss rotational and circular motions is provided by a set of polar coordinates. In the present discussion we will restrict ourselves to motion in which the polar coordinate r is constant, or fixed; …

When an isolated charged conducting sphere bears a charge Q, the potential of the sphere may be computed from the results of Section 23-6 by considering that the electric intensity outside the sphere is as though the entire charge of the sphere were concentrated at its center.

One simple phenomenon of electricity was known to the ancients: that when a piece of amber was rubbed, it acquired the property of attracting small pieces of paper and other light particles. Records show that Thales of Miletus (circa sixth century B.C.) knew of this property of amber; the Greek word for amber is elektron, hence the name electricity. There was practically no further development of this subject until about the seventeenth century. Otto von Guericke (1602-1686) of Magdeburg built a large sulphur sphere, which, when rotated about an axis and rubbed with his hand, gave off electric sparks. In …
Physics, Chapter 18: Transfer Of Heat, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Physics, Chapter 18: Transfer Of Heat, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
The methods by which heat is transmitted can be classified into three distinct types known as convection, conduction, and radiation. In any actual case of heat transmission, a combination of these methods may be operating simultaneously, and the principal problem is to determine the rate at which heat flows from the source at higher temperature to the source at lower temperature.
We may distinguish between the three processes of heat transfer by considering whether a medium is required for the transfer of heat, and whether that medium is at rest or in motion. In the process of conduction, …

Physics, Chapter 17: The Phases Of Matter, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
A substance which has a definite chemical composition can exist in one or more phases, such as the vapor phase, the liquid phase, or the solid phase. When two or more such phases are in equilibrium at any given temperature and pressure, there are always surfaces of separation between the two phases.
In the solid phase a pure substance generally exhibits a well-defined crystal structure in which the atoms or molecules of the substance are arranged in a repetitive lattice. Many substances are known to exist in several different solid phases at different conditions of temperature and pressure. These …

Physics, Chapter 15: Heat And Work, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Until about 1750 the concepts of heat and temperature were not clearly distinguished. The two concepts were thought to be equivalent in the sense that bodies at equal temperatures were thought to "contain" equal amounts of heat. Joseph Black (1728-1799) was the first to make a clear distinction between heat and temperature. Black believed that heat was a form of matter, which subsequently came to be called caloric, and that the change in temperature of a body when caloric was added to it was associated with a property of the body which he called the capacity. Later investigators endowed caloric …

Physics, Chapter 41: Polarized Light, Henry Semat, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
The phenomena of interference and diffraction show that light is propagated as a wave motion, but they do not show whether light is a longitudinal wave or a transverse wave. The fact that the velocity of light is the same as the velocity of radio waves and the radiation of visible light from accelerated electrons, as in a betatron, indicates that light is an electromagnetic wave. We recall from Section 20-9 that a wave can be shown to be transverse if a device can be found which will prevent passage of the wave in one orientation and will allow the …
Permeability Study Of Algal Reef Beds Within The Bonneterre Formation, National Mine, St. Francois, Missouri, Bobbie L. Perry
Permeability Study Of Algal Reef Beds Within The Bonneterre Formation, National Mine, St. Francois, Missouri, Bobbie L. Perry
Masters Theses
"The Missouri "Lead Belt" comprises approximately 50 square miles, centering around the town of Flat River, in St. Francois County. Missouri. This district has been producing lead for more than 200 years, the total production being at least 8,000,000 tons of lead, valued at more than $1,000,000,000. For many years, the annual production of the district has been at least one-fourth of the total production in the United States.
An excellent description of the geology of this area was published recently by Ohle and Brown in 1954.
The ore consists principally of galena which is disseminated within the Bonneterre formation …

The Basement Of North Dakota, Spurgeon C. Crosby Ii.
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this report is to study the basement rocks of North Dakota. The basement rocks of North Dakota may be divided into two categories. The eastern division comprises deeply weathered material and extends from the Red River westward for approximately thirty miles. The western division essentially comprising adamellite (more than 1/3 but less than 2/3 alkali feldspar and more than 10 percent quartz), extends from a north-south line thirty miles west of the Red River to the Montana border.
A Study Of Attitudes Influencing Indonesian Seventh-Day Adventist Youth To Enter Nursing, Wilma L. Leazer
A Study Of Attitudes Influencing Indonesian Seventh-Day Adventist Youth To Enter Nursing, Wilma L. Leazer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In this study a survey was made of the attitudes of Indonesian Seventh-day Adventists toward nursing. This was done for the purpose of discovering why there is a shortage of women applicants to the Seventh-day Adventist nursing school in Bandung, Java. The study was accomplished through the use of questionnaires administered to four selected groups in two geographic areas of Indonesia, and revealed attitudes of two adult groups and two student group. One hundred and twenty-one persons responded to the questionnaires.
The survey indicated that Indonesian Seventh-day Adventists seem to be highly enthusiastic about nursing and believe it is a …

Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell
Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Waste effluents from many industries are toxic to fish and other aquatic life. The control or treatment of these wastes for safe release into receiving waters presents a problem of consider able magnitude.
Much effort has been expended by some industries to solve this problem, primarily through chemical analysis for possible toxic components and then generally by a search of the literature to find out how toxic a particular component may be. Unfortunately, this approach has not been successful, nor can it be expected to be productive of satisfactory answers.
Rhenium Catalysis I. Hydrogenation And Hydroformylation Using Rhenium Carbonyl Compounds ; Ii. Hydrogenation Using Catalysts Obtained From The Reduction Of Perrhenates With Metals In Aqueous Solution, Terry G. Selin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this work was to investigate the catalytic activity in both hydrogenation and hydroformylation reactions of rhenium preparations which have not been previously characterized. Rhenium pentacarbonyl was prepared in good yield from rhenium heptoxide and carbon monoxide. The optimum conditions for preparation were 25 hours per gram of dry rhenium heptoxide at 250° under 3000 psig. (initial) of carbon monoxide. Rhenium chloropentacarbonyl was prepared in 62% yield from potassium chlororhenite and carbon monoxide at high temperatures and pressures. The iodopentacarbonyl was prepared in 29% yield from potassium perrhenate, methyl iodide, and carbon monoxide. The preparation of rhenium hydrocarbonyl …
