A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg
A Theorem On Semi-Continuous Functions, Henry Blumberg
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Recently G. C. Young and A. Denjoy have communicated theorems—those in Denjoy's memoir are of an especially comprehensive character—dealing, in particular, with point sets where the four derivatives of a given continuous function are identical. It is the purpose of this note to treat an analogous problem that arises when "derivative" is replaced by "saltus." However, instead of confining ourselves to "saltus," we prove a more general theorem that applies essentially to all semi-continuous functions. We preface the proof of this theorem with the following

Masters Theses
"This thesis is in the main a compilation of the views held at this institution in regard to the problems discussed as interpreted by the author. No claims for originality are made except in the manner of presentation as the material used has been obtained by conference and class room work with Professor V. H. Gottschalk and Professor G. H. Cox and also to some extent with H. A. Buehler, State Geologist. On the other hand the material is an expression of these ideas as assimilated by the author and hence may in certain cases differ radically from the views …
Nebraska Green Quartzite An Import Ant Future Industry, Erwin H. Barbour
Nebraska Green Quartzite An Import Ant Future Industry, Erwin H. Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
ln southern Harlan and Franklin counties, there occur many acres of green quartzite which must be of commercial consequence when made available. It is a neglected resource upon which important industries are sure to be based. With the development of this bed in view, the Nebraska Geological Survey has examined this area. and through this leaflet wishes to place the results before possible investors.
Nebraska Fossils Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour
Nebraska Fossils Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper must not be mistaken for a report on the fossils of Nebraska. It is merely a circular letter to correspondents describing and figuring those fossils only which occasion frequent comment. In two recent papers of the Survey consideration was given to the common minerals and rocks of Nebraska, and it seems opportune to briefly discuss our fossils in a like manner. Probably no other State can boast of such a well-preserved and varied fauna.
Nebraska Rocks Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour
Nebraska Rocks Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
This leaflet it intended to serve as an answer to correspondents who make inquiry about the rocks of Nebraska1. Unfortunately for those interested in such matters, the rocks of the State are few in number, and are deeply buried from view by sand and soil, so there are thousands of square miles in which even a pebble is a rarity. That our rocks are level and undisturbed is practically true. Still there are some surprisingly interesting folds and faults.
Nebraska Minerals Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour
Nebraska Minerals Which Excite Common Inquiry, Erwin H. Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
The Minerals, Rocks, and Fossils of Nebraska, which Excite Common Inquiry, are treated brefly in leaflets numbered 37, 37a, 37b, respectively. These are intended to serve as circular letters to correspondents. Possibly they may prove to be acceptable and helpful in a measure to teachers and others who conduct parties of school children on field excursions.

A New Longisrostral Mastodon From Cherry County, Nebraska, E. H. Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
During the season of 1914, field work in the fossil regions was pushed less vigorously than usual owing to lack of funds. N evertheless some interesting and valuable material was obtained by the N ebraska Geological Survey, notably the great mandible of a new longirostral mastodon from Cherry County, together with associated tusk and bones.
The mastodon constituting the basis of this paper was found in the exposnres bordering the Snake River in section 33, range 30 west, and township 32 north. The talus slope was strewn with fragments of the tusk and bone of a mastodon. This led the …

Studies On The Relation Of The Nonavailable Water Of The Soil To The Hygroscopic Coefficient, F. J. Always
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
These experiments were carried out in connection with and subordinate to various soil investigations, the object being to determine the relation of the final water content of the soil to the hygroscopic coefficient and to determine to what extent the moisture was removed from the different portions of the subsoil not penetrated by plant roots.
Cross-Bedding In The White River Formation Of Northwestern South Dakota, Dean E. Winchester
Cross-Bedding In The White River Formation Of Northwestern South Dakota, Dean E. Winchester
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Rocks of White River (Oligocene) age have been known for many years to constitute numerous isolated buttes and mesas in the northwest corner of South Dakota, but no detailed study of their character and structural relations had been made until 1911, when, during an examination of the lignite area of that country, the writer had occasion to study the relation of the younger rocks to those containing lignite beds.
Todd, in 1895, recognized the White River formation in the Slim Buttes and called attention to the area in the following language:
3. Miocene beds, both White River and Loup Fork, …
Cement Manufacture In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Cement Manufacture In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the history of cement manufacture in the State, to call attention to certain promising exposures of cement rock, and to report upon the first modern cement mill in Nebraska. Not that this State has been slow in recognizing cement as one of the most important modern constructional materials; or slow to recognize the need of developing its natural resources; but due rather to a combination of circumstances. For at least twenty years, many Nebraskans have had in mind the importance of establishing cement plants in this State. Furthermore encouraging inducements …

Bulletin No. 115 - The Movement Of Water In Irrigated Soils, J. A. Widtsoe, W. W. Mclaughlin
UAES Bulletins
This bulletin embodies a part of the data secured in the irrigation investigations of this Station. It aims to contribute something to our knowledge of the movement of water in irrigated soils . The science of irrigation can not well be built until the laws involved in the mutual relationships of waters, soils and crops are understood with fair accuracy. Much has been done by numerous investigators, during the last fifty years, to give a clearer comprehension of the movement of soil moisture; but the field experiments have dealt largely with saturated soils, and the laboratory experiments have seldom taken …

"The object of the following tests was rather to determine quantitatively the consumption of Potassium Cyanide and of Sodium Cyanide when agitated by compressed air, and when agitated by compressed air in the presence of iron pyrite and in the presence of iron filings, than to explain chemically the causes for this consumption"--Part One, page 1. "The following tests were made to study the rate of percolation of water, under certain conditions, through pure quartz. the information sought is of importance in the cyanide process. By "rate of percolation" we mean the distance traveled in a unit time, by water …

Preliminary Notes On The Carboniferous Flora Of Nebraska, Roy V. Pepperberg
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
About the middle of July, 1907, while engaged by the Nebraska City Commercial Club in examining the geology of Nebraska City and vicinity, the writer was called b the farm of Mr. C. B. James to look at a bed of what was supposed to be fire clay. This proved to be a Carboniferous deposit of stratified micaceous sandstone, interstratified with a fine compact shale, both of which are yellow in color and very fragile when wet.

Evidence Of Man In The Loess Of Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
After careful investigation the writer stands ready to announce his belief in the occurrence of human remains in the loess of this state, and for this primitive type he has proposed the name Nebraska Loess Man. Such importance attaches to the discovery as to warrant a paper devoted to the geological facts connected therewith.

Biennial Report, Erwin H. Barbour
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
The Nebraska Geological Survey as now constituted has been in operation since 1891, but it has enjoyed state aid during the past four years only. Considering the size of the commonwealth and the limited appropriations for geological work, unusual progress has been made. Since no report covering the work of the first biennium was prepared it will be included incidentally in this paper. Briefly stated the Nebraska Geological Survey during the past biennium has devoted especial attention to the industrial resources of the state, prepared ten o! twelve reports in manuscript form, published eight reports completing volumes I and II, …
Opening Of The Indian Territory, G. E. Condra
Opening Of The Indian Territory, G. E. Condra
Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications
The opening of Indian country has continued from Colonial days to the present. Usually it has resulted from force and treaty, the strong dispossessing the weak. As a result, the Red man has, in general, moved frontierward, ahead of industrial waves, remaining for a longer time only on reservations set aside for tribes. The Indian's struggle even on these reserves has been a losing one, resulting largely from war, disease, and the cupidity of whites. History shows that Indian life and Indian institutions have not prevailed against the white man's civilization and commerce. GATHERING THE TRIBES. The Indian Territory and …

Notice Of A New Miocene Rhinoceros, Diceratherium Arikarense, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
THE accompanying sketches represent the skull of a species of rhinoceros, Diceratherium arikarense, supposedly new, discovered by the geological expedition of 1905, sent from the University of Nebraska by the Hon. Charles H. Morrill to the Loup Fork beds at Agate, Nebraska, on the ranch of Mr. James Cook.
The genus Diceratherium was established by Marsh in 1875 on material from the Miocene beds near the John Day River in eastern Oregon, and two species, armatum and nanum, were recognized. A third species, advenum, was based on material from the Eocene (possibly Miocene) of Utah. Difference of horizon, …

Present Knowledge Of The Distribution Of Daimonelix, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Present Knowledge Of The Distribution Of Daimonelix, Erwin Hinckley Barbour
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Daimonelix when first discovered, in 1891, was thought to be confined to the elevated tablelands of central Sioux County, Nebraska. In the meantime its range has been extended and it is now known almost throughout the entire Arikaree formation, a tract probably about five hundred miles in diameter, situated in Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado. The more fibrous forms of Daimonelix constitute a character so constant as to justify the name Fibrous Arikaree for the upper half of the formation.
