The outline of our present paper is as follows. In §1, we collect some preliminary definitions and results. §2 inaugurates the study of F-rings and F-spaces (i.e., those spaces X for which C(X) is an F-ring).

The space of reals is not an F-space; in fact, a metric space is an F-space if and only if it is discrete. On the other hand, if X is any locally compact, σ-compact space (e.g., the reals), then βX-X is an F-space. Examples of necessary and sufficient conditions for an arbitrary completely regular space to be an F-space are:

Otosclerosis is a frequent affliction resulting in progressive hearing loss. With the advance of ear surgery during the past 25 years various procedures have been proposed for the correction of this condition. Among their number surgical mobilization of the stapes has assumed considerable importance. In this paper, which is presented as a thesis to fulfill the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, the operation will be discussed on the basis of the literature and the author's own experiences with the procedure.

One of the essential duties of the State of California Department of Civil Defense in times of nuclear weapon attack will be radiological monitoring. The workers in this field will operate from a mobile laboratory truck, equipped with radiation counters and meters, but containing only the simplest of chemical equipment. One of their main problems will be the determination of the total amount of radioactive material, especially fallout of fission products, in a water sample. As yet no method of analysis both simple and rapid enough for application to mobile operation has been developed.

The following polyhydroxyamine compounds were synthesized, purified and· analyzed:

1,2-bis[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]ethane dihydrochloride

1,3-b1s[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]propane dihydrochloride

1,3-b1s[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]-2-propanone dihydrochloride

1,2,3-tris[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino)propane tri­ hydrochloride

The latter two compounds have not been reported in the literature.

Chelates were prepared by reacting the above compounds, and 1-3bis[tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino]-2-propanol dihydrochloride ("disec") and the "disec" free base, with the ions of the first transition metals. Stability cons­tants were obtained where appreciable coordination occurred before precipitation of the metallic ion took place . "This report presents the results of detailed mapping of the geology of the northwest quarter of the Washington Quadrangle, Missouri. Extensive mapping and stratigraphic work have been done in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties to the east and in Callaway and Boone Counties to the west. These two well studied areas are separated by approximately 45 miles. This study adds geologic information to the area immediately between the above locations. Descriptions and illustrations are given for 44 ostracode species of the Decker, Rondout and Manlius limestones of the William Nearpass quarries and Dalton Nearpass farm in northwestern New Jersey, and at Austin's Glen and Trilobite Mountain in New York. One brachiopod variety is proposed. The ostracode species are distributed through 11 families and 23 genera. Thirty-two species and one variety are new, and there are eight new genera. Holotype or syntype specimens of 13 of Weller's ostracode species have been restudied and are refigured and redescribed. Stratigraphic sections are described to provide details of the ostracode occurrences, and zonal potentialities …

The Chadron and Brule formations constitute the White River Group in Nebraska and adjacent states. The Brule is divided into the Orella and Whitney members. The latter members are referred to the Medial and Late Oligocene (equivalents of the European Stampian and Aquitanian), while-the Chadron is equated with the Early Oligocene (Sannoisian). Each unit in Nebraska is subdivided into three parts (Lower, Middle, and Upper; or A, B, and C for the Chadron and Whitney, and A-B, C, and D for the Orella). Fluvial and lacustrine sediments of great thickness accumulated in the intermountain basins of the western United States during Tertiary time. The Salt Lake group in northern Utah and parts of surrounding states is a conspicuous stratigraphic unit of these basins. The "beds of light color" in Morgan Valley in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah were named the "Salt Lake group" by Hayden (1869) because of similar occurrences in Salt Lake Valley and because he reasoned that the succession could be divided into formations. Previous work carried out at Marquette University has proved that the formation of scale in sea water evaporators can be prevented if such things as dehydrated alfalfa foliage or dehydrated corn, oats, peas, and grass foliage are added to the feed sea water. It has also been proved that the maturity of the plant from which the corn foliage has been stripped varies the scale preventing ability of the foliage, and that the storing of the corn foliage increases its scale preventing ability. The plant pigments constitute a fascinating group of compounds whose constitution has only recently been partially clarified. Roughly speaking, there are two main groups of pigment: the plastids, associated with the protoplasmic structure of plants, and the anthocyanins, generally found in solution in the cell sap. The term “anthocyanin” is derived from the Greek, “antho” signifying flower and “cyan” meaning blue, and was introduced by the botanist Marquart in 1835 to designate the blue pigments of flowers. It has since been extended to include all of the pigments of this group, the anthocyanin pigments being responsible for the innumerable shades …

The present paper deals with two distinct, though related, questions, concerning the ring C(X, R) of all continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular topological space X.

The first of these, treated in §§1-7, is the study of what we call P-spaces -- those spaces X such that every prime ideal of the ring C(X, R) is a maximal ideal. The background and motivation for this problem are set forth in §1. The results consist of a number of theorems concerning prime ideals of the ring C(X, R) in general, as well as a series of characterizations of P-spaces in …

A device is described which effects a continuous separation of internally infested wheat from sound wheat, and which separates wheat into a number of fractions of different test weight. A stream of wheat, projected into still air by rapidly moving belts, is dispersed by the combined effects of air drag and gravitation into numerous fractions which are caught in a series of hoppers. Infested kernels fall short of sound grain and are thus separated. Test weight varies progressively and characteristically with distance from the point of projection.

The purpose of this investigation was to design and construct a laboratory size electrolytic cell in which to reduce alumina, using the same basic materials that are used in a commercial size cell. The cell was designed to have a capacity of approxi­mately 100 grams of metallic aluminum produced every 8 hours. The cell was constructed so it could be operated continuously.

This paper deals with a theorem of Gelfand and Kolmogoroff concerning the ring C= C(X, R) of all continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular topological space X, and the subring C* = C*(X, R) consisting of all bounded functions in C. The theorem in question yields a one-one correspondence between the maximal ideals of C and those of C*; it is stated without proof in [2]. Here we supply a proof (§2), and we apply the theorem to three problems previously considered by Hewitt in [5].
