Investigation of the chemistry of the elements by conventional methods is generally limited to concentrations on the order of 10^-5 M or higher. The discovery of radio-activity opened new fields in chemistry among which is the obtaining of information concerning chemical behavior of elements at very low concentrations. For many years after the initial discovery of radioactivity in 1896 by Becquerel, the study of low-concentration chemistry was limited to about ten naturally occurring radioactive elements. The present study was initiated to determine the effect sorbitol has upon the enzymatic functions of thiamin; specifically, what effect sorbitol bas upon the alpha-ketoglutarate and pyruvate dehydrogenases activities of rat liver mitochondria. In addition, the effect of varying the dietary sorbitol concentration on the development of an athiaminosis was studied, particularly the effect on growth rate.

During the past quarter of a century there has been considerable investigation into the effects of fluorides on living organisms. It has been well established, as a result of these studies, that both small and elevated amounts of fluorides present in the environment may have a marked toxic effect upon gaining entry into the organism. Much of the research involving fluorides and the living organism has been confined to experimentation with animals, although considerable evidence indicates that plants are also subject to injury if fluorides are present in the atmosphere or the soil.

Early in 1952, walleye fry were stocked for the first time in Utah Lake. Subsequent plants were made in 1954, 1955 and 1956. Altogether, over two million fry have been stocked.

By January, 1958, it was felt sufficient time had elapsed for the species to establish patterns of growth, reproduction, food habits and consequent relationships to the new environment. Thus, on January 1, 1958, a Federal Aid to Fisheries project, number DJ F-4-R-5, job T, was initiated. Molybdenum may function as a catalyst in promoting and controlling some of the complex chemical reactions that go on in living systems. The lack of understanding which exists about these reactions is due to their obvious complexity and to the extremely minute quantities of molybdenum involved. Traces of molybdenum have been shown to have spectacular results on the growth of plants when added to certain soils. This metal is also required for the growth of azobacter, the nitrogen-fixing bacteria (1).

During the fall of 1959, monolayer behavior studies were made on two lakes in the southwest; Boulder Basin of Lake Mead, Nevada, and Lake Sahuaro near Phoenix, Arizona. These studies were made to evaluate the effect of geographical and climatological conditions on movement and behavior of monolayers. The Lake Sahuaro tests also were used to provide data for design and development of improved methods of application and maintenance of a film on this lake in anticipation of full scale, evaporation-reduction tests to be performed there during the summer of I960. To be more precise, an area encompassing around 20,000 square miles or about one quarter of the total state area. This is indeed a vast prairie region long noted for its fine cattle and native hay crops. It is a region of vegetative dune sandhills, sandy basins and valleys, exposed ground water, spring seep lakes and marshes. IN the year 1859, an enthusiastic sportsman in Victoria took delivery from the clipper "Lightning" of a small consignment of wild European rabbits which he joyfully released on his estate at Barwon Park, near Geelong, in order to assure himself of some rough shooting.

He was not the only rabbit importer on record—tame rabbits were brought into Australia before and after 1895 and doubtless there were other importations of the wild rabbit—but he is generally credited—or discredited—with having triggered off the rabbit plague.

A GREAT deal of publicity has been given of late to the value of bluebush (Kochia brevifolia) as a plant for some types of salt-affected land, particularly in the drier parts of the wheatbelt.

Obtaining seed supplies can be a problem, but fortunately large amounts of seed are not required since once a few bushes are established they will spread seed over the intervening areas.

Thus rates of 1 to 2 lb of seed per acre have been found quite satisfactory.

MANY farmers and city householders have weed problems around houses and sheds which can be readily overcome by treatment with appropriate herbicides.

The risk from fire through weeds and unslightly growth can easily be removed and an area free of any plant growth can be maintained with little effort for a considerable period.

In the sandhill region of Nebraska both northern pike, Esox lucius, and grass pickerel, Esox vermiculatus, are abundant in several shallow natural lakes. Both species are known to utilize the same vegetative habitat for spawning during March and April. The pike is an important game species but the smaller pickerel is of little value to fishermen although in winter is at times taken by angling through the ice.

Two classes of game farm permits were made available by the 1957 legislature to persons keeping protected species of wildlife in captivity. A pet or fancier permit authorizes the possession of fifty or less game birds or game animals where no commercial use is made of such wildlife. A commercial permit authorizes the possession of game birds and game and fur-bearing animals of regardless of number, where trade, sale, barter, or any commercial use is involved. THE establishment of the Wiluna office of the North-West Branch marked the commencement of a series of investigations into the pastures of the mulga zone.

Unlike the agricultural areas where a fund of knowledge exists on the growth habits of the pastures, the pastures of this area were completely unknown.

The preliminary investigations had to be aimed at forming an understanding of the reactions of the various plants to rain, to temperature and seasonal conditions and to grazing in an area of extremely low rainfall reliability.

The objective of this study is the preparation of a tetracycline-boron-10 derivative which is stable under biological conditions. The boron-10 should then provide a concentration of material capable of accepting thermal neutrons, thus producing localized high-energy alpha radiation. The fact that the tetracyclines are not retained by normal tissue should remove the danger of destruction of this tissue.

In this work, further evidence has been collected establishing the existence of a new ionic species in solutions of sodium tetracyanonickelate(II) and sodium cyanide. Contrary to the literature, however, this work shows that the species is [Ni(CN)₅]^-3 rather than [Ni(CN)₆]^-4.

Studies On The Biological Oxidation Of Ferrous Iron And Chalcopyrite, Loral Alvin Decker

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of the leaching streams from waste copper ore dumps as a nutrient solution for subsequent biological oxidation and solubilization of sulfide minerals. The copper in the leaching streams is precipitated by displacement with iron. As a result of this procedure the solution is high in ferrous iron concentration and has a pH of near 3.7. The bacteria in the leaching streams are capable of oxidizing ferrous iron to the ferric state and sulfide minerals to sulfates.
