The Microvegetation Of A Small Ice-Cave In Hungary, Erzsébet Kol

International Journal of Speleology

The algal flora of a small, artificial, ice-cave located in Northern Hungary is described. In this cave 23 species of algae (see in Table 3) were found of which the Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta occurred with approximately equal number. (9 vers. 11) It was found that the primary limiting factor influencing the penetration of the algae into the cave is the low temperature and not the lack of light.

An account of the researches carried out on the algae living in the caves of Hungary is given. The results of the investigations concerning the algal flora of the Baradla, Peace, Abaliget, Pàlvòlgy, Kòlyuk caves are enumerated. Theories about the possible energy source utilized by these algae living in the complete darkness of caves such as radiation, symbiosis, chemosynthesis or auxothrophy are discussed. The question of the settling of algae into the caves is debated.

Modern biospeleology dates from May 15, 1907, with the publication of Racovitza’s “Essai sur les problèmes biospéologiques.” In this paper he posed - if he did not answer - every question raised by life in the subterranean world. He outlined a program of biospeological research, made an analysis of the conditions of existence in the subterranean domain and their influence upon cavernicoles, discussed the evolution of subterranean biota, their geographical distribution, etc. Racovitza modified Schiner’s (1854) classification, dividing cavernicoles into troglobites, troglophiles and trogloxenes, terms later adopted by a great number of biospeologists. The cavernicoles include: (1) Cambala speobia (Chamberlin), troglobitic in central and southwest Texas; (2) C. reddelli reddelli n. sp. and subsp., troglophilic in west Texas and epigean in New Mexico; (3) C. reddelli inornatus n. subsp., troglobitic in northwest Texas; and (4) Mexicambala russelli n. gen. and sp., troglobitic in southern San Luis Potosi. They are described and figured, and a key is given.

Antrolana Lira, A New Genus And Species Of Troglobitic Cirolanid Isopod From Madison Cave, Virginia, Thomas E. Bowman

Antrolana lira, a new genus and species of troglobitic cirolanid isopod, is descnibed from Madison Cave, in the Appalachian Valley of Virginia. The problem of its origin from a marine ancestor is discussed. A supplementary description is given of Cirolanides texensis, and records of its occurrence are given. A key is given to the troglobitic Cirolanidae of the Western Hemisphere, and their known distribution is shown on a map. The subgenus Speocirolana Bolivar y Pieltain is raised to genus.

Complexes of trivalent samarium, europium, terbium, and dysprosium were prepared for investigations of the luminescence properties of complexed rare earth ions. Rare earth chilates derived from benzoylacetone, dibenzoylmethane, and acetylacetone; rare earth chlorides solvated with water and deuterium oxide; and rare earth oxides dissolved in sodium metaphosphate glasses were synthesized for these studies.

The work described in this section is concerned with the kinetics of an S_N2 reaction, the isotopic exchange reaction between iodide ions and p-nitrobenzyl iodide, carried out in an aprotic solvent, acetone, in the presence of various substituted phenols and anisole. This reaction was carried out at concentration of potassium iodide low enough to insure the absence of ion pairs.

This research problem was done in connection with the fluoride balance studies on twelve children at Plymouth State Home. The retention balance studies of fluoride by children can be studied indirectly by measuring the amounts of fluoride excreted in the urine and feces after administration of the fluoride in water or in vitamins as sodium fluoride. The fluoride balance study was repeated, because in the previous study (19), there were no samples collected for a base day in which the fluoride was not given. It is well known that the replacement of two or more of the ortho hydrogen atoms in the benzene rings of biphenyl by lager atoms or groups hinders the rotation about the l.l'-carbon single bond in the biphenyl system. If the groups are so large that they are unable to pass each other upon rotation of the l,l'-bond, then the two benzene rings are forced to assume a non-planar configuration.

The Problem: This study was designed to ascertain which of two pre-catheterization cleansing procedures now in common use for the female patient is more effective in producing an area relatively free of microorganisms.

The Need: Indications of need for the study were: (1) an increasing body of literature linking catheterization with frequent urinary tract infections, many of which are "silent" but have extremely serious sequelae; (2) lack of uniformity in defining adequate pre-catheterization cleansing; and (3) absence of any recorded research to determine an adequate cleansing technique.

Self-diffusion in single-crystal tungsten and diffusion of rhenium tracer in single-crystal tungsten have been measured over the temperature range 2660°C to 3230°C by the direct sectioning technique. The initial radioactive layer of tungsten and rhenium tracers was produced on the diffusion samples by bombardment with 9.0-MeV deutrons. It was shown that the initial radioactive layer satisfactorily approximated the boundary-condition requirements of the one-dimensional diffusion equation. The tracers observed in determining the diffusion coefficients were W¹⁸⁵, Re¹⁸³, and Re¹⁸⁴. Diffusion heating of the samples in high vacuum was accomplished by an induction-heating arrangement which included …

Freezing-point diagrams were detennined tor a number or p-dioxane systems. The system, p-dioxane:carbon tetrachloride, was found to contain a 1:2 complex with a congruent melting point of 255.71 °K. This confirmed work reported in the literature. Solid solutions in the region between 0.0000 and 0.4796 mole fraction of p-dioxane were found in the present study. The system, p-dioxane:chloroform, was found to contain a 1:2 complex with a congruent melting point of 215.65 °K. It was determined that no other complexes formed in the solid state. This information resolved contradicting reports in the literature. The system, p-dioxane:dichloromethane, was found to contain …

The Western Australian commercial crayfish, Panulinrus cy,nus George, (1962)", is caught in depths ranging from a few feet to approximately 45 fathoms. In the shallow waters large numbers of crayfish measuring, less than the legal minimum length are brought to the surface in the standard commercial crayfish pots. The law requires that these undersize crayfish be returned to the sea, but there is always the temptation to retain them for illegal sale. In addition, the undersize crayfish which are returned to the sea are often damaged by handling. The probability is that their mortality rate is higher than those which …

Although primarily a systematic study, variations in the integumental striae and chaetotaxy of the legs are discussed. The genus Octobdellodes Atyeo, 1960 is synonymized with Bdellodes Oudemans, 1937 and the sugenus Cytobdella Mihelcic, 1958 is synonymized with Cyta von Heyden, 1826. The genus Bdellodes is divided into the subgenera Bdellodes and Hoploscirus Thor, 1937 (=Thoribdella Grandjean, 1938, new synonymy). Twenty-two species are now known to occur in New Zealand and the outlying islands. These include four known species: Bdella iconica, Bdellodes (Roploscirus) lapidaria, B. The recommendations given in this article have been built up from the experience of the author in growing 200 acres of cotton in the Ord River area during the 1962-63 season for the Department of Agriculture, from findings made by Kimberley Research Station, and from discussions with the present farmers in the area.

When a new form of agriculture is introduced into a new area techniques and ideas change rapidly as farmers become acquainted with their new environment and the new crops. The recommendations will therefore require constant revision.

A third genus in the tribe Anthophorini in the vI/estern Hemisphere, genus Deltoptila, is described in this work. Previously described species included in the genus are as follows: D. melanopyrrha (Dours), D. elefas (Friese), D. fulva (Smith), D. bombyformis (Smith), D. montezumia (Smith), D. aurulentocaudata (Dours), D. agilis (Smith), D. costaricensis (Friese). New descriptions and records are given for D. montezumia, D. aurulentocaudata, D. agilis and D. costaricensis. Two new species are described: D. afimbriata and D. pexata.

"The acceleration of neutrons via their magnetic dipole moment in an axially symmetric magnetic field is considered. Conditions for bunching are derived and expressions for the off-axis forces are developed. It was found that neutrons off axis are forced back onto the axis and that neutrons slightly depolarized remain in their initial state. A calculation of the acceleration is made using the field of a current loop and the conclusion is that under present laboratory capabilities a neutron accelerator is not feasible"--Abstract, page ii.

"Diagenesis designates all modifications which a sediment undergoes during and following deposition and prior to complete lithification, metamorphism, deep burial, and orogenesis.

Probably the dolomites of the Jefferson City Formation resulted from alteration at, or below the sea floor or the depositional interface and during diagenesis. Diagenetic dolomitization or penecontemporaneous alteration presumably involves a reaction between the calcium carbonate sediments at/or below the sea floor or the depositional interface and magnesium salts in solution or suspension in the basal layer of contacting sea water, or in the initial pr connate water trapped in the sediment.
