The hydrolytic removal and subsequent reinsertion of carbon 2 of a series of 3-substituted-4-hydroxycoumarins has been accomplished. The removal of carbon 2 presents an effective synthetic route to o-hydroxyketones with complex side chains. o-Hydroxyketones when condensed with alkyl carbonates gave good yields of 4-hydroxycoumarins. When this was carried out with ethyl carbonate-carbonyl-¹⁴C a radio label was inserted in position 2. It was shown that this decarboxylation-carboxylation cycle did not involve racemization of an optically active α-carbon on a side chain in position 3. This method was used to prepare the enantiomers of Marcumar-2-¹⁴C(3-α-ethyl-benzyl-4-hydroxycoumarin). The enantiomers of …

In this Note we present the results of a calculation of the expectation values of a number of one- and two electron properties of the ground-state helium atom using two very simple correlated wavefunctions.

Rigid control has been imposed upon the Missouri River by impounding over one-half of the upper 1,500 miles and by channeling most of the remaining river within permanent, narrow banks. These controls have caused environmental changes in the lower Missouri River, as shown by this study, of adjacent unchannelized and channelized sections of river below the main stem impoundments. Impoundments have regulated flow by evening maximum and minimum discharges and improved downstream water quality by decreasing turbidity and indirectly raising the dissolved oxygen. In addition the impoundments have contributed a limnetic cladoceran, Leptodora kindti, to the drift and have …

This paper is a monographic revision of the bee subgenera Micrandrena Ashmead and Derandrena, new subgenus, of the genus Andrena in North America. Both subgenera occur in the New World and Micrandrena also occurs in the Old World. Twenty-eight species are treated, of which twelve are new: Andrena (Micrandrena) annectens, ishii, labergei, lamelliterga, lepidii, micheneri, Andrena (Derandrena) arctostaphylae, californiensis, hermosa, murietae, penutiani, viridissima. Pest birds cause serious damage to agricultural crops in most situations only when the number of individuals is very high. Often, large populations of avian pest species spend the hours of darkness congregated in roosts where they become vulnerable to certain control methods. Such is the case in California where certain pest species, particularity starlings and blackbirds, can often be found roosting in cattail-tule marshes. From these relatively concentrated populations the birds disperse to cause in some, but not all, cases of serious damage to certain agricultural crops. The total scope of chemosterilants is very wide so I will comment only on the pigeon chemosterilant developed by G.D. Searle & Co. and then briefly on the role of chemosterilants, generally, in bird control. Searle's ORNITROL (SC-12937, azacosterol) is a chemosterilant which in-hibits reproduction in the pigeon and is to be used as a means of controlling pigeon populations. It is fed as a treated whole corn bait (0.1%) for a period of ten days and inhibits reproduction for about six months. DRC-1339 was screened and developed by the Denver Research Center (U.S.D.I.) and since has been tested in various portions of the country by the Denver Center and other organizations, including the State of California. Submitted to the Department of Biology on 30 August 1968 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The section, "MYOGLOBIN REFINEMENT," describes the fitting of an idealized polypeptide chain to a set of approximate backbone coordinates for the protein, sperm whale myoglobin. This procedure refines the structure by imposing upon it known bond distances and angles, and simultaneously derives a representation of the polypeptide conformation in terms of the values of the rotation angles about its single bonds. Experimental values of the relative heights of scintillation pulses generated in NaI(T1) crystals, by heavy ions (Z>5) of energy 1-10 MeV/amu, agree well with computed relative cross sections for photon production, from a theory based on the assumption of a one-hit response to the spatially distributed dose of ionization energy, and a characteristic dose of 4x10⁷ erg/cm³ for this material Discrepancies between theory and experiment for He bombardments arise from the theoretical neglect of the nonlinear dose variation over the sensitive volume surrounding each TI atom. The genus Hemipterodectes Berla is redefined and the type species, H. squalocauda is figured. A new genus, Diproctophyllodes (type species, Proctophyllodes (Alloptes) dielytra Trouessert, 1885) is described; D. exquisita (Berla), 1959 is synomized with D. dielytra; and D. oxyrunci, new species, is described.

Biometrical study of morphology and development in a sample of 100 cranidia, 94 pygidia, 26 free cheeks, and 9 complete specimens of the trilobite Ameura sangamonensis (Meek and Worthen) from the Bonner Springs Shale (Pennsylvanian; Missouri Series) in eastern Nebraska indicates that the dominant growth pattern was isometric. Evidence supporting this conclusion consists of rectilinear size relations among eight pairs of cranidial dimensions, three pairs of pygidial dimensions, and three pairs of dimensions of the free cheeks. Qualitative changes in pygidial morphology during development include a progressive decrease in prominence of the border, increasing width of the posterior border relative …

The purpose of this investigation was to determine factors which may influence the survival time of mice infected with Trypanosoma equiperdum and the effects of T. equiperdum on mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

In order to maintain experimentally obtained standard hours of survival (88 hrs) in mice inoculated intraperitoneally with 150,000 T. equiperdum, it was found that trypanosomes removed from the donor rat should be kept at 25 C and all counts, dilutions of the organisms, and injection should be completed within 1 hour after removal from the donor host. A convenience sample of 480 Caucasians using original diagnostic cephalometric films was selected to evaluate the nasion-menton and sella-gonion distances and their relationship to the mandibular plane angle.

The anterior facial height was represented by the nasion-menton plane. The posterior facial height was represented by sella-gonion plane. The facial depth was represented by sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes. The mandibular plane angle was represented by the intersection of the sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes.
