Cobalt(Iii) Complexes With 1,2-Propanediaminediacetic Acid, Paul John Magnell

Introduction

Aminocarboxylic acid cobalt(III) complexes have been of interest to inorganic chemists since 1909 when Ley and Winkler isolated violet and rose colored geometric isomers of tris amino acid complexes of glycine and alanine.¹ More recently, considerable interest has been shown in the study of the stereochemistry and optical activity arising from configurational and vicinal interactions of these complexes. Nuclear magnetic resonance of the methylene protons on the carboxylate portion of the coordinated ligand has also been studied.

Of immediate interest to this study is the stereo-chemistry of complexes containing flexible tetradentate ligands. A tetradentate ligand may be constructed …

The Fishes Of The Nemaha Basin, Nebraska, Larry Witt

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The possible effects of proposed watershed management practices on fish resources of the Nemaha Basin were poorly understood; thus, a study was undertaken to ascertain the species of fish present and their relative abundance and distribution within the basin. Thirty-five species were collected, 34 of them from the Big Nemaha River system and 28 from the Little Nemaha River system. These data may be used as a basis for future studies of fish population changes in the Nemaha Basin and possibly as a basis for studies in other watersheds.

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

A new species of Ischyrosmilus (I. crusafonti) is reported from the Early Pleistocene Broadwater Local Fauna of Morrill County, Nebraska. Ischyrosmilus sp. is reported from the Early Pleistocene Lisco Local Fauna. Megantereon is reported from the Broadwater Local Fauna and this is the first record of the genus from North America.

Algal Growth And Decomposition: Effects On Water Quality, Phase Ii, Edward G. Foree, Ronald L. Barrow

The decomposition and associated nutrient regeneration of three unialgal cultures and one mixed culture containing an indigenous population of bacteria and microscopic animals were studied under dark, constant temperature laboratory conditions. After periods of nutrient-deficient growth ranging from O to 30 days, these cultures were inoculated with decomposer populations and subjected to anaerobic and aerobic environments for the decomposition studies. The extend of decomposition was determined from the percentage volatile suspended solids and percentage particulate COD remaining after 200 days of decomposition. The average extent of decomposition was greater for aerobic than for anaerobic conditions. However, significant portions of the …

Red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoneiceus) have been studied intensively in the United States and Canada by research biologists of the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife for more than a decade. The detailed information on popula¬tion dynamics of the species that has been acquired is now being assembled and assessed. Definite patterns in the distribution of some of the eastern and mid-western populations have become apparent (Dyer et al., 1072; Power, 1069, 1970). A very complex distribution of territorial densities occurs in the western Lake Erie Basin of the U.S. and Canada (Dyer et al., 1972), where there are significant differences …

The operation of decoy traps at The North Central Farm, Vickery, Ohio, the Ottawa-Crane Creek-McGee Marsh Area, and on the Bass Islands in Lake Erie, has permitted the banding of thousands of Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), Common Grackles (Quiscalus quiscala), Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater), and Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). The repeats and returns of these banded birds justify inferences concerning the sex and age ratios in the populations and the stability of the populations, as well as indicating the seasonal migrations and movements of the populations.

Serum calcium levels were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry during different stages of development of the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus). The effects of the reproductive cycle, growth, and soil calcium on mean serum calcium levels in this species were analyzed as were the effects of mean serum calcium levels on eggshell thickness, hatchability, and egg production.

The effectiveness of 3-chloro p-toluidine (DRC-1339) as an avicide, particular¬ly on the European starling, has been adequately demonstrated (DeCino, Cunningham, and Schafer, 1966; Schwab, 1965, 1966, and 1967). Methods of applying the com¬pound which have proved useful range from the standard baiting technique (Besser, Royall, and DeGrazio, 1967; Royall, DeCino, and Besser, 1967; West, 1968) to pos¬sible aerial application of the compound to roosting sites (Schwab, 1967). These methods, particularly the latter, inherently lead to widespread environmental exposure. As the chemical name implies, DRC-1339 is a chlorinated hydrocarbon. My own contribution to this programme has been to collect information on the feeding be¬haviour and ecology of the birds concerned, and use this to test the effectiveness of various control systems. All but two have bird problems. Most of these airports were built on submarginal land, but what was perhaps some of the best wildlife habitat in the country. So, the birds were there first. Mackay had found that prolonged ultraviolet irradiation of solutions of 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO) (1) in toluene resulted in the formation of an insoluble crystalline product 2 which accumulated above the meniscus; the formation of 2 was dependent upon the presence of dissolved oxygen and water in the solutions. The Compound 2 was not a simple degradation product of PPO (1); elemental analysis was compatible with the empirical formula C₂₂H₁₇O₅N and the thermal decomposition of 2 gave equal molar amounts of carbon monoxide, benzoic acid, and dibenzamide. The purpose of this research project was to study the αᵧ phase in Alnico 6. Other phases were studies for comparison. Also the effect of an applied magnetic field on the formation of the αᵧ phase was investigated.

Three single crystals of Alnico 6 were heat treated for one hour--one at 1250°C, one at 1000°C, and one at 800°C--and water-quenched. The microstructure of each sample was observed with the optical microscope, and X-ray diffraction patterns were taken to determine the crystal structure of the phases present.

A Quantum Mechanical Investigation Of The Heh3+ Energy Surface, Merle J. Benson

An all-electron ab-initio calculation of the energy surface for the reaction He+ H⁺₃ → HeH⁺ + H₂ was performed using a 9slp gaussian basis set for helium and a 4slp gaussian basis for hydrogen. Reaction paths calculated were of C_2V, C_S, and C_3V symmetry. The lowest energy configuration was found with the molecule in C_2V symmetry with the three hydrogen atoms in an equilateral triangle of side length 1.64 a.u. with the helium atom 3.85283 a.u. from an apex of the triangle. The Effects Of Various Treatments On Thiamin Diphosphate And Total Thiamin Levels Of Rat Tissues, Dong Hwa Park

Tissue thiamin diphosphate was assayed enzymatically utilizing purified brewer's yeast apotransketolase. With this assay ten uumoles of thiamin diphosphate could be detected. Total thiamin was fluorometrically measured. For one to three days rats were placed under conditions of stress, consisting of loud noise treatment, emotional stress, deprivation of paradoxical sleep, and swimming to exhaustion, respectively. The body weight was markedly decreased at the end of the respective experimental periods except with the loud noise treated group, compared with the corresponding controls. Following two to three such consecutive treatments, the adrenal weight also showed a significant increase. Thiamin diphosphate and total …

As part of a comprehensive study of the thermodynamics of conformational changes of n-alkyl groups in aqueous solution, the equilibrium constants, enthalpy changes, and entropy changes have been measured for the stepwise formation of bis(n-alkylamino)silver(I) complex ions at 25° in dilute aqueous solution. The attachment of the charged Ag⁺ to the end of the amine molecule is thought to cause changes in the conformation of the n-alkyl chain. The effects of these conformational changes on the formation constants, enthalpy changes, and entropy changes of the Ag⁺ complexes are discussed and compared with the effects on the formation constants, …
